I don't get it. A cute indie game... that demands super-meat-boy tier reflexes. Recommended for very intense gamers that only have one hand.
Koloro is a rather pleasant dream.
DISCLAIMER: THIS REVIEW DOES NOT EVALUATE COOPERATIVE MODE.
Story
There's not a lot to go on here. Players take control of a young girl named Kora who seems to be stuck in some sort of dream or nightmare. Together with an imaginary friend, she sets off to find her sister who seems to be missing. Dialogue throughout the journey is sparse and the grammar isn't always what it should be, but there may be a deeper story regarding her sister. Overall the story seems wide open for interpretation and the game could function more or less identically without it, which is fine.
Gameplay
Koloro is a 2D puzzle-platformer spanning dozens upon dozens of levels but with a twist. Kora takes the form of a square for some reason, and has zero control of her on momentum. Every time you start a level, she will begin continually sliding either to the left or to the right and gravity will always be pulling her downwards. The only control the player has in the entire game is the ability to jump. That's it. Your entire input to this game is a single button. And it works brilliantly. The only way to swap between sliding left or right is to jump into and then off of an opposing wall. This turns Koloro into a lengthy adventure relying entirely on good jump timing, grasping the behavior of how she jumps, and learning to implement the many mechanics the game throws at you. From spike traps and gravity switches to water submersion and buttons that rearrange the entire level, Koloro takes a single form of input from the player and turns it into miles of excellent gameplay. Some levels serve as fast paced tests of reflex and jump accuracy while others focus on laid back environment puzzles to be solved. Many more maps mix the two and completing just about any stage once you're acquainted with the mechanics is highly satisfying. Rarely is there a sense of trial and error as almost every stage can be studied ahead of time before you begin playing. If you're looking for some extra challenge, every level has an associated target time to work on beating and completing the game on Normal mode unlocks Hard mode; featuring the entire campaign again but with even more brutally placed obstacles and timings to struggle through. The time trials really should be a UI element that is featured during gameplay though, rather than having to seek it in the level select. Collision can feel a bit questionable at times but never so harsh that you'll be more than a couple pixels from a hazard if you die.
Easily the biggest mistake the entire game makes are the boss fights. They almost tanked this review merely by being mandatory but are so few in number that if you can look past having to deal with them; the rest of the game is very much worth them. Unlike every other stage in the game, they are antithetical how Koloro functions. Where every other stage can be observed ahead of time and has patterns and rhythms that remain consistent no matter what, boss fights are completely random. You'll never know where or even how they're going to attack next until they're about to do it and because you have no genuine control of your character, you may be in a position where it's already too late to even react to the incoming attack. There's no sense of satisfaction when a boss is defeated. There's only a wash of relief that you can go back to playing the actually fun part of the video game again.
Presentation
Koloro is a very simple visual package and to be frank the game often teeters between incredibly stylish minimalism and a drawing some kid got to put up on their refrigerator; usually the former though. There's a pleasant use of color used in most levels of the game and even a surprising amount of complexity to a particular boss design, but ultimately the game's visuals are the most important thing they need to be: clean and easily readable. Sound design is likewise very minimal with simple sound cues signifying everything from jumps to button presses. The game's soundtrack is a very ambient sort bordering somewhere between genuine music and comfortable noise to fill out the soundscape. Either way, it's kind on the ears
Stunning dark and vivid platformer even better in co-op.
You move, you jump, you change direction and you jump some more.
But also die, mostly.
If you like hard platformers, you should like this. I liked it and still do.
Wildly underrated and not known enough.
Also good music!
Ever thought of driving a car at high speed with no brakes at all while trying to solve a map puzzle with road blocks? Well, this game is precisely that... and sometimes "blindfolded"...
For game control, this is a platforming game with a "sliding" movement and we can't change direction unless we hit a wall, the only single button we could use to control the whole gameplay is spacebar/mouse button for jumping. The rest of the movements are out of our control...
And, the game require precise timing, only giving a few seconds of rooms between each action point... there's no HP bar in this game, it's instant death on a single mistake. And death means you have to restart the whole stage again.
In short, this game is testing patience and EQ to its maximum... It's no kidding that only 4% players finished the game, and only 6% made it halfway... The game shows its merciless from the very start of the game. There are quite a lot of stages, all perfectly built for tormentation and every chapter and branches in the routes has their own element of play and solving method, you get about 5 stages for each solving mechanism, so this game is not repetitive at all like some boring platformer, it's in fact very fun... and the gameplay usually felt longer than it is meant to be, mainly because of the death and retry. The stages are not long, in fact, they are small, not even side scrolling, just one page of map right there on the screen, one can finish a stage in around a few seconds to a few minutes longest, but those seconds felt like millennia due to the high focus requirement... and well... plus the stage repeats when failing... it's definitely longer than we expect...
This is by far, not a "Learn by Death" type of game, because most of the time, you can see and understand the solution of the stages before you start running, but still, death is almost unavoidable depending on your skill. This is a "Improve by deaths" type of game, you simply die die die and hope for a better chance next time. No, the controls and timings are perfectly coded and very responsive, just that there's very few "thinking time" once you get the momentum moving.
I've played a lot of platforming games that are famous for their difficultly, but this one, it's hardcore from the beginning to end. You think normal mode is insanely hard? Then wait till you see the hard mode this game provides that further narrow down your breathing room, you have to stay so focused that you might forget to breath...
The puzzles are not the most difficult types out there, most of the them are about "orders" as of which comes first and followed up by which next, but being required to solve them with precise timing and sometimes "blindfolded" is challenging nevertheless.
This game even have multiplayer... but it has the same difficulty as the single player, and all stages are built and designed for 2 players to go as insanely good as the single player version. One single mistake from either of the player and both have to restart the stage. So both players need to be perfect. But since it's just one button push to control the characters.. Some crazy player can even challenge to play and control both chars at the same time? The ending seems a bit different for the multiplayer mode.
The graphic is the simple artistic form we normally get on mobile games. Simple yet beautiful. But not something wall-paper worthy beautiful. Just eye pleasing beauty.
As for the story, normally for this kind of art focused game, the story are vague and swallow, which is normal. Mainly because there's no story writer among the three talented guys who made this game. But there are branches in this game which isn't related to the story. So there's still things for the completionist to do, like explore previous stages again to find hidden secrets or take the branches to see what's there. Each routes provide different challenges, so it's totally worth taking the detour to experience everything.
The music is the electronic trance genre, my favorite. So it's pretty calming all the way through the game and yet keeping up the hyped tension. If it wasn't for the nice music, I might have gave up long ago...
If you don't like platforming and yet like Trance music, well... I'll suggest getting the soundtrack. It's really good.
So... now come the part to ask myself the question, is the game fun? For me, yes, it's challenging and fun even when I am mostly crying and swearing while playing... But still, it's fun. Yet I can't say that will be the same for everyone, the achievement % of a game normally tells you how many people actually completed it. Normally we get like 26%~15% completion rate for some high difficulty games... this game has only 4% so the difficulty is not a joke. Yet it's not impossible to complete, since I've reached the ending myself. There are no glitches, no game breaking bugs or whatsoever, very responsive control... It's completely functional and win-able designed by a developer who's a perfectionist himself. It just require patience and skill from the players.
Those who like challenge, and love high difficulty platformer games, this will sure be a good investment for you. This game will put your reflex skill, puzzle solving ability, memory, and of course, both IQ and EQ to a maximum test.
Those who can't stand timing challenges or puzzle solving or bad at memorizing the layout of a map, should just grab the soundtrack to enjoy the great music and forget about the game. But if you wish to become good at these genre and train your mind, do give this game a try!
great game. only wish there were checkpoints in the levels so you didn't have to play the whole thing perfectly to progress! Then again it makes a good challenge!
takes literally 1000 iq to play this hehe
Indie Geometry Dash with calm soothing soundtrack which tempers any rage down which you might feel after dying for the tenth time in the same level. Way more calm though, considering that each level is rather short (didn't play through the whole game yet). Feels more like a game for the smartphone than the PC considering that the only controls that you have is the jump button. The visuals make the whole game way more atmospheric though.
Recommended if you like similar games, preferably get it on sale.
Rating
6/10 (B-tier)
A simple yet neat game with some issues holding it back a bit. It's also not unique enough to make me give it a higher score.
Details
Music and sound design
I'm not sure how I feel about the electronic parts of the soundtrack but they're not common and don't feel too out of place. Otherwise it fits the game's atmosphere perfectly. The sounds are good.
Visuals
I like the art style and the way the game looks in general but I'm not a fan of the character animations in cutscenes. It feels kind of clunky.
Controls
You only have one button so it's as simple as it gets.
Story
Starts off very abruptly and then you get almost no story until you reach the final boss. And even then there isn't much that's happening. This is definitely not a selling point of the game.
Gameplay
One of the most important things I want to mention is that this game feels very slow. It's more a puzzle game rather than a platformer. Of course that's not necessarily a bad thing but if you're looking for a fast-paced platformer, this is not for you. It's very calm and slow (except for the bosses) and it's very atmospheric. The boss fights are more hectic which is why I enjoy them a bit more personally.
I've only seen a couple bugs so far. The game feels quite polished overall.
The only thing you can do with the character is to jump (you can't even control the height of the jump, at least not by much as far as I can tell) and you can only change the direction you're going in by jumping off a wall. This helps the game in the sense of being a puzzle game but it makes the platforming less fun. When I play a platformer I want a lot of control over my character. Again, another reason why Koloro should be seen more as a puzzle game.
The gimmicks of the levels are interesting and easy to understand.
Koloro is a pretty long game. It has a lot of content, even a good chunk just for co-op mode. There are heaps of achievements to collect too.
The normal mode is relatively easy for most of it. Towards the end it becomes a little harder and the bosses are also challenging. The time challenges are pretty fun and partially also a bit more difficult.
The hard mode seems good mostly, it increases the difficulty appropriately. Although it does feel a bit less creative because it's just a harder version of normal mode. And I don't like the hardmode boss fights because they weren't changed in any interesting ways. For example, the first boss just takes longer to kill and the second boss has no checkpoints.
I have one other minor issue with the gameplay: Some enemy hitboxes feel too big. But this issue doesn't come up very often, only in a few levels.
Overall Koloro is a well-made and creative game.
If you're looking for an interesting puzzle game with nice visuals and a lot of stuff to do, try this one.
Very nice game with a wonderful atmosphere. Gameplay is simple to learn but challenging and interesting.
Recommended!
