A very fun game that deserves to be more widely known.

This is quite a challenging who-done-it, with some clever twists in the tale. If you enjoy games that do the detective genre well, I highly recommend this title.

One tip: Choose your handling of each witness carefully. The right approach will unlock their tongues when the wrong start to a conversation can handicap your future progress.

I for one would love to play another 'Dr Doyle' title :)

This is a pretty enjoyable short-ish game. It's chief virtue comes through how it more or less challenges the player to solve the mystery. It plays like a point and click adventure game, but your inventory consists not of wacky items but rather of conversation/investigation topics. Each of these topics can be used on people or objects in any given location. You have to think about how the elements of the crime relate to one another and, therefore, who needs to be asked about what. And then by the end, it's up to you to be certain whodunnit. It's genuinely pretty compelling. And it's really quite rare in digital medium. The only other GOOD games I can think of that attempt something like this are Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments and Shinrai

I also enjoyed the soundtrack, which added a good bit of atmosphere to the proceedings and helped me to look past some of the art/mechanical gameplay- which felt just a tad short of the professionalism you might expect from wadjeteye or daedalic.

If I have a criticism, it's that the mystery itself is just a tad simple and owes more to Sherlock Holmes (the investigator's name is Doyle) than it does to Agatha Christie. This means that less than halfway through, I was fairly certain whodunnit (the number of suspects is not large) and played on only to confirm my suspicions and fish out motivations. If PnC creatives another in the Doyle line, I would hope they go just a bit bigger. But regardless, I enjoyed this quite a bit and devoured it in a single sitting.

Don't bother. The game is unplayable, it has a bug and suddentdly you can't keep playing. Restarted/reloaded many times to have the same think happening again and again.

Appearances can be decieving. For all its rough edges this is an unexpectedly deep point-and-click adventure game, designed in the older style. That is, if you can't connect the clues together in your own mind then chances are you'll be stuck.

This approach by the developers is both a blessing and a curse. When playing Dr. Doyle one realizes how streamlined other adventure games have become: hotspots and inventory are overly specific in their intent; without even having to think the player often knows that to do. Not so with Dr. Doyle. Hotspots are deliberately vague in their meaning, and they don't reveal useful information...unless the player can deduce the correct topic to use with it. Topics are what the game uses in place of inventory, and the difficulty comes from the fact that they're initially abstract. Exhausting every available topic onto every available hotspot doesn't always work, because topics must be cultivated and informed over time, and often in a certain order of deductive reasoning. In fact, the player can even cultivate misinformed topics, unknowingly leading to incorrect conclusions!

The game's strength is that it forces the player to intuit the clues themselves, in a usually logical pattern, and this often leads to a genuine sense of discovery and satisfaction.

This results in a surprisingly deep point-and-click experience, at least when compared to any of its contemporaries. This also means a lot of frustration for the player, because it's slightly more idiot proof and random proof than what some of us have come to expect from the genre. There are also no walkthroughs available online (this isn't a very well known game).

As for the story, it's a very dry English mystery. Old fashioned to the core. It's not my genre of storytelling, but the game does a surprisingly good job of telling it. I've completed a playthrough, yet I still haven't completed the full story, thus I don't even know the real ending. I assume there are multiple endings? After a certain point in the game I unknowingly started to cultivate the wrong conclusions, which led to an ending in which I may have accused the wrong person.

It's presentation is very barebones, perhaps even crude. Main annoyances are the character's walk speed, and a kind of "Simlish" dubbing to all the voices. But I got over these flaws pretty early into the game.

All in all, this is a solid point-and-click that takes a riskier choice in its design, one that results in more frustration but more immersion.

I really enjoyed this game! If you like lots of story and making deductions based on clues, I think you will like this one too. Clues and important info show up as inventory items. To move forward in your investgations, you need to like them together and to the right objects and characters. Very clever and interesting. It took me 6.5 hours to do my playthrough but I screwed one part up and so am going back to fix it and the solve everything correctly. I thought it was well the price and I had a lot of fun playing detective.

2 things I needed to do to play this properly:

* I had to set my Display in the Control Panel to 100% to keep dialogue and text from being cut off. Devs are working on a fix but it is crucial to make your setting work or you won't get the info you need from the dialogue and descriptions. Easy to do.

* No voiceovers so Devs decided to do a kind of Charlie Brown adult sort of talking noise when characters talked. This drove me CRAZY as there is a ton of dialogue. So, I turned the sound down in options and kept the music (which is very good) on and kept playing irritation free. I recommend doing this so you can just enjoy the story.
