Like all of Forgwares' games, Crimes and Punishments is very janky and a bit buggy.
If you don't mind some eurojank then this is a genuinely very good game. I'd say it's the best of the Frogwares Sherlock games.
(UPDATE) It seems to have started working again and i have been able to get past the area that it crashed and closed on me, the game does update every now and then for bugs so for now i will say try it yourself but like people say not all games are 100% on every console, i will still recommend this game
Good adventure game with a clever mix of puzzles and interesting cases.
You know it's a bad game when they give you the option to skip their janky ahh puzzles
Solid point and click mystery game but is a little hand-holdy at times. Can be played first or third person view, you control Holmes and look for clickables (clues), do mini-games and deduce theories based of the clues. The game is split into six self-contained cases of varying length. The second case was I think the weakest and I think the first and fourth ones are based of cannon Holmes stories. Overall cases were pretty solid.
The mini-games were of various quality. You need to do a number of them for an achievement but luckily you can skip every mini-game and there's enough that you can skip the most annoying ones (which is good because the arm wrestling and bridge crossing games completely sucked). Had a few minor graphical glitches here and there and the game crashed a couple of times randomly.
The most interesting element I think is that each case has multiple possible conclusions (murderer/weapon) you can deduce and the case will end even if you pick the 'wrong' conclusion as the solution. Some of the cases' evidence can be a bit circumstantial so can come down to gut instinct a bit. The game gives you to opportunity to verify you had the 'right' conclusion and lets you go back if you want through and usually the true culprit is more obvious than others based on total clues; on my blind playthrough I solved 5 of the 6 cases correctly and the last case I at least had right murderer. After completing playthrough, did speedrun of each case to get rest of achievements.
Great Game
very good game and interesting storyline and indepth cases.
I like the game. It looks good. It's a good solution to carry out the investigations like this. The difficulty level of the graphical puzzles is appropriate. I feel entertained and certainly not frustrated.
I really enjoyed this game, despite the bug I will mention below.
Crimes & Punishments is a deduction game, wrapped in the frame of an adventure. You play as Holmes, and occasionally the droopiest basset hound ever, across six cases. You investigate crime scenes, interrogate witnesses and suspects, and make deductions based on your findings. At the end of each case, you make conclusions and an accusation of the responsible party, and a moral choice about their fate.
The investigation and conversation parts of the game are solid. Where I really enjoyed the game was the theme/setting, and the deductions. The game puts you into some quite nice Victorian settings, and really makes the world and the characters enjoyable to interact with and in. One slight drawback is that the quicktime events to challenge a suspect during interrogation or case resolution can appear out of nowhere, and I missed some because I took my hand off the keyboard.
The Deduction and conclusions were a highlight for me. By linking clues you get by investigating, you unlock a network of node ideas that have either one or two possible options. By selection between those options, you shape which conclusions you can arrive at. This felt great, because the game would allow me to interpret evidence several different ways, and not tell you which is correct until after the case. The evidence is also constructed to be allow multiple interpretations, and the player must really stop and think to figure out the most likely answer.
Unfortunately, I and many other players have a similar bug. While in the deductions web, if you click on a multi choice node, there's a chance the game crashes. This was a real mood killer. It happens to me about every 25 minutes or so? I didn't find any fixes online, but I did not search too hard. Even with this issue, I still enjoy the game enough to keep going. However, I totally understand if this is a deal breaker for other people.
I give this a qualified recommendation, because the bug might ruin an otherwise good experience.
This is a solid detective game that puts you in the shoes of the iconic sleuth. It’s not perfect, but it delivers a satisfying mix of investigation, deduction, and storytelling that fans of crime-solving games will appreciate. Here’s my take after finishing the game:
The Good
- Immersive Cases: The six standalone cases are varied and intriguing. From gruesome murders to industrial sabotage, there’s enough diversity to keep you engaged. Each case feels like a mini Sherlock story.
- Deduction System: The “deduction board” lets you piece together clues and form conclusions. You can even accuse the wrong suspect, which adds replayability and a sense of moral ambiguity.
- Atmosphere: Victorian London is beautifully recreated. The environments feel authentic, and the small details—like foggy streets and period-appropriate interiors—immerse you in the setting.
- Choice Matters: It’s refreshing that the game lets you choose how to resolve cases, affecting both the outcome and your perception of Sherlock’s morality.
The Not-So-Good
- Clunky Mechanics: Movement can feel awkward, and some of the mini-games are more frustrating than fun. Thankfully, you can skip them if they’re not your thing.
- Predictable Pacing: After a few cases, the gameplay loop becomes a bit predictable: gather clues, interview witnesses, solve a puzzle, and make deductions. While still engaging, it lacks surprises in structure.
If you enjoy methodical gameplay and piecing together clues at your own pace, this is worth picking up—especially if it’s on sale. It’s not action-packed or groundbreaking, but it delivers a faithful Sherlock Holmes experience.
Just be prepared for some rough edges and slower pacing. It’s more about using your brain than brawn, which is exactly what a Sherlock game should be.
Recommended for detective fans, not adrenaline junkies.
it's alright. not the best.
A solid game, but neither a thumbs down nor a full on thumbs up.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments has a lot of interesting gameplay elements, and cool story plots within the cases. The game also lays the groundwork for the sequel, with the brilliant deduction minigame where you thread evidence together, which is the final form of what we saw them try with Sherlock Homes vs. Jack The Ripper.
Unfortunately, the game suffers from dumbing down in several areas, which was likely to make it more console friendly, and is littered with several crashes. Outside of technical issues, while the cases format gives the game a fresh feel compared to earlier titles, there's no overarching plot, making it feel too "freak-of-the-week" for my tastes (the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter, fixes this).
If you can look past all of that, it's seriously a solid title that lays the foundation for the sequel in many ways, which improves upon practically every aspect in this game.
Crashes often during the mind aspect, not sure why. Anyway! The game is fun and entertaining, but lacks a spark of something... exciting? Perhaps? I don't feel challenged when stuck, mostly frustrated. And the endings seem almost random at who the murderer ends up being. I bought the rest of the games so I am curious how they will build from this going forward, but at the same time don't recommend this game.
I love the travel scenes and this game did do some things brilliantly.
Quite a good game, especially if you are into the detective genre and are a fan of Sherlock Holmes.
It's by no means perfect. Graphics are a bit dated and unpolished at times but seeing the age of the game, I don't see any reason to complain too much.
Gameplay wise, the game is pretty simple. Collect clues. Make deductions and then arrest whoever you think did it. It's all quite entertaining, albeit sometimes the flow is hindered with those annoying lock puzzles and the constant driving back and forth to different places. I appreciate the attention to detail, being in the carriage as Sherlock reads his book but some of the cases do overuse the traveling gimmick.
In the end, I enjoyed the game and it kept me busy for about 17 hours so definitely good value. I will say that I wasn't a huge fan of being able to change the outcome after you accuse someone nor the handholding as you combine deductions, but I guess that would make the game too hard for some.
7.5/10
This Sherlock Holmes game stays very true to the original material and character, in all his campy glory, across 6 great cases. Particular highlights are Riddle on the Track and Blood Bath. Some of the puzzles are a little janky but can easily be skipped. the mechanic of putting together deductions to form conclusions was fun. Using Toby the bloodhound in multiple cases was sweet. And do always love the various Sherlock antics he gets up to between cases. Enjoyed the voice acting here too. Had a fun time streaming this one to friends.
this game is fun play wise for me, but ive been noting some subtle racism in the dialogue. particularly in the second story. the game itself is linear and pretty easy to walk through. but i cannot recommend based on weird problematic dialogue choices
Very fun if you enjoy deductive, thought provoking, and problem solving games. Some issues related to thinking about how 1-2 of the cases should have played out, but it's fine. 8.5/10 would recommend.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is the first Sherlock game I played and is part of the reason I’ve become a Sherlock fan, to now I’m even reading the books.
As I understand, this game was the first in the series that moved more towards the player making connections and deductions to solve the cases. There are still some puzzle like the older games, but that’s not necessarily the main gameplay. You play through 6 independent cases as Sherlock Holmes and get to experience his methods (like his impressive knowledge of tobaccos) and drama, plus some goofiness from seeing his disguise table. Each case can take around 2 hours to explore and solve.
There are 25 achievements, which are relatively straightforward and were fun to get. A few of them are missable but it’s not bad.
YOU GET TO PLAY AS TOBY. Really good game, I would and have recommended it before.
Product refunded because of constant crashing at beginning of game. I wish I was able to play it (sigh)
A-mazing
Finally got yo grips with how it works but frankly the mini games are tedious and not interesting enough to be worthwhile. There are various parts where you must question people but if you miss out what seems an an unrelated question, you miss a clue. I can't be bothered to play it any more.
Thám Tử Lừng Danh Với Những Vụ Án Hấp Dẫn
I hate and love it when Dr. Watson always blocking my way
Watson :)
Is a good game, but a play once game.
Be sure to not look for any hints online. Otherwise it will be short.
Frogwares always builds Sherlock's criminal cases very smoothly and this game is no exception. I enjoyed solving every case.
Good game, but crashes in during deduction happen all the time and that is annoying and reason, why it is "No" for recommendation
I have loved every single Sherlock Holmes game, right back to the first one. Obviously the graphics improve as each one is brought out, but the mixture of characters, plots, and puzzles is spot on. If you don't want to just run around killing stuff, this is the one for you.
A lot of fun!
I like that whilst there is only really one 'correct' answer for each case, you get to choose whatever conclusion you think is the answer. Similarly, I like that you get to choose the outcome of each case too (condemn or absolve). There are numerous different routes you can follow on each case that could lead you to different conclusions.
It made me appreciate The Great Mouse Detective more :^)
I enjoyed playing each case. I only disliked the frequency of certain minigames, but they can be skipped. Overall 8/10
An adequate game, there are a lot of loading screens, as you change location often, which is a bit annoying. The cases haven't gripped me, maybe i'll come back to it, but i'd rather play a good game than an average one
To be honest, I went in blind. I had no prior experience with games from this company, but I must say; this one is pretty fire.
Things that I see as positive:
- very pretty graphics
- interesting cases
- the snippets of Sherlock's personal life in between cases
- The way the dialogs are written, it just does something for me
- Minigames
- I think the length of the game is satisfactory, just enough to make a good gameplay and leave you with that curiosity for more
As for things that kind of irritated me:
- It is true that a lot of things are handed over to the player on a silver plate. What's worse, it's usually things that are kind of intuitive, that you could get satisfaction from completing on your own.
- On the contrary, when You don't get hints for something, it's mostly for things that, yeah, are pretty non-intuitive.
All in all, it's definitely a game I'd recommend for future players. It's got the drama and the mystery, and it can make you reflect on your own morality. I'll absolutely try out another one of the Frogwares games on Sherlock, so far, they haven't disappointed.
good game.
Worthy of a purchase when on sale. A series of short mysteries that you need to solve, very digestible and can each one can be done comfortably in around 2 hours. Don't worry though, there is more than enough mystery to go around. I really enjoy it.
Not without its problems however, game crashed on me multiple times. Not sure what the cause is but i had to add a new variable in my hardware to fix it.
I was given the Sherlock Holmes experience.
Finally! A game where I can play as Butterscotch Crumblebottom
Sherlock Jones
Captivating! I could hardly put down my Steam Deck.
One of the best detective game I have played.
The game really shows its age and the fact that it was developed for consoles. So it should be much, much cheaper.
There is really not much gameplay in this game; It's all just running around the map several times until you've finally found every clue, for which you sometimes have to go into a completely superfluous special mode. You'll have times where you just run around again and again until you find just the right pixel to look at. Even worse, you'll check different locations separated by loading screens. If you're not pixel hunting, you're just told exactly what to do. It's just not fun.
The graphics really hold up, the voice acting is distractingly stale and doesn't allow you to get immersed at all. If it wasn't 10 years old, I'd think it was AI voice acted.
For better detective games, check out the Golden Idol, Return of the Obra Dinn, Chants of Senaar, The Operator, , Between Horizons, maybe Duck Detective. Also check out Firewatch and Inscryption, which are not classical detective games, but defiinitely scratched that itch for me.
Rather enjoyed the game, gabbed it during a sale and have sunk 7h into it and have thoroughly enjoyed it although my own stupidity has gotten in the way a couple times
Really enjoyed this, have nothing bad to say about it
Sherlock my a_s_s
Despite being a 10 year old game, this has held up pretty well. The story and cases are pretty solid; there's only one case that felt a bit lacklustre (5). The minigames can be slightly tedious at times, but they're all skippable. It is definitely replayable as well.
There are a few cons, one being that the puzzles are a little too easy to figure out, but I can understand why that is.
The other is the constant fast-travelling. The game isn't open-world, so you have to constantly fast travel to places, which can be annoying. As an example, in case 6, you get the objective to visit a pawnshop. You go there, examine a few things, then you're told to visit the crime scene again. 2 minutes later, you're told to go back to the pawnshop to get the items you examined.
The Sherlock series in general is super underrated, but this is a great game that I really enjoyed. I recommend this not only to Sherlock fans but also to anyone interested in a fun detective game :)
They could have done so much to make this game click, but, unfortunatelly, it is released unfinished, simplified, illogical. Rather a torture than fun. From the famous character only the name is left.
I loved this game
The deductions, using clues, and different moral endings are fun!
Very nice if you enjoy a good atmosphere and the small details.
Probably not for people who want quick action. Id say its a nice and slow game but that might also just be because I enjoy and check out every detail and take my time.
