Welcome to Puzzle Island, a beautiful place where time stands still and there's nowhere you need to go. It's just you, the sand, the palm trees and of course the lovely ocean.But we wouldn't want you to get bored while you're here, so how about some puzzles to solve while the sun sets?
In each level of Puzzle Island VR you're given various objects such as crates, buckets, balls or planks. Equipped with some of the most realistic ropes you've ever seen in a game, you'll need to somehow stack those objects to touch the glowing orb. Sounds easy, right? Well it isn't always. Sometimes the wind will blow your boxes away or the force-field prevents you putting that create exactly where you need it and often the solution is more challenging than simply stacking objects.
The puzzles will require you to think like an engineer, keep cool like a martial arts grand-master, have a steady hand like a marksman and also think outside of the box like an inventor.

I'm not really sure if Puzzle Island VR is an asset flip. Some elements of this game certainly make it seem like the developer put some effort into assembling some kind of original here. On the other hand, a lot of the game assets don't seem like they were created by the developer, but they haven't credited any asset creators for supplying assets, which might be a case of plagiarism. There's no evidence, so we need to give the benefit of the doubt... regardless, asset flip or not, the quality here is indistinguishable from many asset flip/cash grab scams, and that's a problem in itself.
Puzzle Island VR is a very simple VR exclusive "puzzle" game where you're on an island with what look a lot like a bunch of uncredited stock assets (plagiarism is bad, mmkay). Use your VR controllers to move stuff around. There was a multiplayer component but the "developer" didn't know how to make it work properly, so they pulled it from the game. Which is kind of the problem with this "game" and many others like it... developers who don't know what they're doing, but they have $100 and access to Steam Direct, so there's no stopping them dumping valueless shovelware onto Steam. Valueless shovelware like "Puzzle Island VR".
The game is very simplistic, small and limited in scope and ambition. This feels more like a tech demo, proof of concept or student homework assignment rather than a fully fledged product designed for PC gamers. As such it doesn't offer any real value as a serious PC game.
This seems to have been made a VR exclusive to prevent any comparison with non-VR 3D games, a comparison that this game would fail very badly at. Developers must learn that while VR is great, if the only thing that makes the game great is the VR, then the game isn't great at all.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 4 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 100,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?
Puzzle Island VR has the far too high price of around $5 USD (I thought it was a joke at first but they seriously think this tech demo is worth $5), it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "X-Com: Enemy Unknown", "Fallout: New Vegas" or "Frostpunk". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
teleport movement is not working with og vive controllers and I cannot find a reason as to why
This is one of those games that utilise VR properly. This is the sort of game that can't exist outside of VR! It's a simple concept, but very compelling. Attach ropes to a box and pull it into place. As many VR games that rely on physicality, the fun is in the details. Where do you attach the rope? Do you attach just one or two? How do you swing the box just right to get it to fit into place? As the levels progress, the environment becomes more complex and throws obstacles at you. All in all a really fun game for short play sessions. I wish there were more VR games like this.
The game is broken. Hook mechanics just don't function and there isn't any guidance at all. Do not download!
There is just one small bare island in this game with some palm trees. The environment is actually very nice, except for how fast the water moves. However, what would have been a relaxing experience is absolutely ruined for me by the blaring loud depressing music that cannot be disabled. I requested this one simple option numerous times from the developer, but they didn't seem to care. In fact, there are absolutely no options in this game. Gameplay involves solving puzzles by moving crates, barrels, and stones around with ropes and rope handles are therefore always attached to your hands. The game appealed to me not because of the puzzle solving element, but for a nice relaxing ocean VR experience. Like I said though, this is just not possible for me without an option to turn off the music and just listen to the ocean. A much better experience in my opinion is Guided Meditation VR.
This game requires full mobility and a large play area; if your mobility is limited or you don't have over a 6x6 area to play in, then you will have problems.
Most games accommodate limited mobility (limited range of motion) and compensate for standing or sitting - this game does not. I normally stay away from any game that requires full movement (as my right arm is limited and I can't move my hand much higher than the top of my head), and in order to do many of these puzzles you have to be able to do that (and more).
You cannot shut off the music (or mute it) and there is no option menu that I can find to change anything. While I don't expect a lot for a $1.24 on sale - I guess I got what I paid for.

I really enjoyed this. There are clunky moments, and I am hopeless at throwing boxes using ropes.
Also, carefully consider whether to buy if you are short. Some of the puzzles require you to reach high places. I'm 6 foot and I was tiptoes a lot.
I'd give this 3/5 stars. I paid $1.25 on sale and got 53 minutes out of it. 90% of the puzzles are simple and finished in seconds. A handful require some throwing, which is imprecise and time consuming... borderline frustrating. Graphics and ambiance are great.
Fun and strangely compulsive. If you need some "mindfulness" to yourself ... this is probably the right prescription ... very tranquil and restful alone on the island (didn't try multiplayer) and a submarine stroll is also relaxing .. you need your wits when the wind blows ... and be aware that when you have everything you need to complete a level some (expected) functionality changes as part of the challenge of the game. Worked well no glitches, though the wiggly worm ropes took some mastering ......
Good day. Just bought and downloaded Puzzle Island on my Oculus Rift S. Game looked good and i was excited to play only to discover NOTHING works sigh.... pulling the trigger does NOT launch the rope. Teleport does not work unless i click the toggle sticks. Turn only works on the left controller not the right one. PLEASE FIX or advise. Since i cant even launch a rope no matter what i press i am unable to do a thing.. cheers
Well i love the physics and brain twisting challenge.....just a little too easy and i do crave more levels. why dont we have more levels. at this point in development seems easy to come up with more levels.

I actually bought this physics puzzler back in October of 2017 and back when it was meant for coop play. I paid $4.99 on sale from the normal $9.99 retail price. Well, now this game is out of Early Access and it's normal price is $4.99 USD and it is now meant for single player only (ignore all the old reviews). Yeah, I paid too much. This game isn't that good.
It's not that bad either though, as long as you can look past several issues. The biggest issue for me was the low frame rates. So this is a physics puzzler game. The problem is that when you try to do the physics part ... by using the rope or bringing several objects together, the frame rate takes a big drop. I went from a steady 90 fps to 45 fps whenever I tried to do the puzzles.
You're in an island environment. It looks nice, for a 2017 game (just okay for 2020). However, it's probably causing the frame rate dips with all the waves in the water, the palm trees swaying in the wind, and the bird flying up in the air. I'd rather have a vanilla background if it would mean I could do the puzzles without these frame rate dips that effect gameplay.
I found most of the puzzles to be super easy and I was able to solve most of them instantly in my mind. However, executing the solution was another matter. There were this one puzzle in particular that took me multiple attempts and many minutes before I was finally able to get a lucky throw to knock off a suspended crate that was up in the air. It was more frustrating than anything else. A few puzzles maybe took me a few seconds to solve. Those were generally satisfying to complete. In all, this game took me about 2 hours to complete. It can probably be completed in 30 minutes or less if it was a smooth & polished experience though.
You have teleportation only for locomotion. You only have snap turning. There are no settings to adjust. I did experience a few bugs. There were some collision detection issues and clipping through objects. Sometimes the physics would just go haywire and the objects would go flying. I would also teleport suddenly back to the starting area.
Rate 5/10. Do not buy if you don't like physics puzzle. Even if you love physics puzzle, I would say wait for a deep, deep sale or just completely pass unless you want to deal with all the issues the game has.
Great on Rift CV1, OK on Odyssey+, Had to Change Controller Bindings on Rift S
The thing that draws me most to VR is the ability to "visit" stunning environments. The environment in this game is sparse (a few sandbar islands with some trees, surrounded by ocean), but still manages to be one of the most attractive and immersive I have seen. The ocean wave effects, both the visuals and the buoyancy physics, are extremely well done. The puzzle props are realistic and fit nicely with the theme. The textures were detailed, even up close. I've taken numerous breaks from the puzzles, just to stare out at the waves. The Puzzle Island world looked beautiful on all three headsets. The clarity of the Rift S was particularly well-suited to showcasing the excellent graphics and water animation. I wouldn't mind an option to turn off the music, to enjoy the nature sounds.
Rift CV1 Experience
There is a series of puzzles, with each increasing in difficulty. The problem-solving aspect is only one part of the challenge. The other part is skill. You are forced to pick up items using only ropes spawned from your controllers. The rope physics are believable, but the characteristics of the ropes themselves take some getting used to. They feel more "limp" than I would expect. It doesn't make the game any less enjoyable. Teleportation is done by pressing down on the joystick. Rotation is accomplished by pushing the joystick left or right. My only complaint about the controls is that the joystick must be held in position briefly before the turn happens. I am accustomed to being able to quickly nudge the joystick to effect a snap-turn.
Odyssey+ Experience
The gameplay is roughly the same on the Odyssey+, but while the CV1 seems sluggish on snap-turns, the Odyssey+ has the opposite problem. It uses the trackpad and is hypersensitive. Even resting a finger near the trackpad will often cause a turn or sometimes a teleport. This certainly detracted from the game. I also notice that one of the menu prompts in the first tutorial puzzle appeared backwards (If I recall, I believe it was the prompt for turning).
Rift S Experience
Like the Odyssey+, the Rift S had backward prompts during the tutorial session. Both the trigger (rope) prompt and the turn prompt were mirror-writing. Despite this, teleport and turning worked fine. As I noted in the beginning of my review, the visuals were amazing on the Rift S - the best of all three headsets. Unfortunately, the ropes would not spawn on my Rift S. I pointed the controller at the prop, squeezed the trigger, and saw the green sighting line, but no rope appeared. At the suggestion of the developer, I experimented with my controller bindings through the SteamVR settings. I changed the grips to behave as triggers. Now, squeezing the trigger gives me the sighting/aiming beam and squeezing the grip deploys and attaches the ropes. Unlike the momentary delay with the CV1, the attachment occurs instantaneously making it easier to catch objects in some of the levels that have them blowing in the wind.
Extremely buggy, multiplayer is barely working, the puzzles aren't very difficult IMO, and the game hasn't been updated in about a year. It's a cool concept, but it's a very short barebones game with no support or updates happening. Just skip right over this, unless you happen upon it for free somehow.
Great game, though it would be better if the puzzles were more difficult and the physics engine were better. A lot of time is spent grappling with the physics rather than actually figuring out how to solve the puzzles.
How do we play with friends? Every time we both load it, we end up playing along. Is there a server anymore? Does multiplayer not work?
Can't recommend this game to anybody. The controls are more frustrating than fun. When most of my time is spent trying to fight the controls rather than solve the puzzle there's something wrong with the foundation of the game.
My Puzzle Island strarts up in level 20 and there is no way to enter level 1 to begin the game!

I didn't expect to play it for two hours straight but that's exactly what happened. It's set on an island which to date has the most realistic graphics I've experienced in VR. I've played 19 of 20 levels and so far it has been mostly hard puzzles. This was one of the first puzzle games I've tried on the Vive and it's now one of my favorite games. As a whole I truly recommend it!
PROS
- Graphics are very realistic and to me it's the most realistic environment I have experienced in VR.
- For the most part the puzzles are hard.
- No instructions. This is actually a good thing seeing as it made it more difficult in the beginning.
- No mic in multiplayer. I've only been able to try out online multiplayer for 15 minutes or so but I liked the fact that there was no mic. Only being able to express myself with my hands actually made it more fun. Plus, he/she didn't hear when I raged about my failings!
CONS
- Some puzzles seemed only possible for really tall people OR you'd need a high ceiling and a ladder! Edit: The developer answered and clarified that it is in fact possible to solve all puzzles no matter your own height or the height of your ceiling.
- Multiplayer doesn't seem to be an option, couldn't find an option to opt-out.
- Multiplayer latency wasn't great. Maybe a better matching system otherwise it gets quite laggy.
Improvements
- Add more puzzles! There are just 20 levels right now. I've reached level 19 and soon I'll be done.
- Possibility to skip levels. I like the fact some levels are hard but it would be nice if it was possible to skip a level if the player has tried it for maybe 30 minutes or so.
- View solutions. It would be interesting to see other possible solutions for a level once you've completed it. Either visually in-game or just text instructions.
Total playtime: For me it took somewhere around 2 hours to get to level 19. I've not played many puzzle games before so for newbies this is great!
