These untamed dragons had bullied around and caused massive damage to the land since their birth. To end this chaos, the descendants of Five Elder Tribes joined together and released a powerful imprison spell. Finally, the dragons were defeated and kept under the Fallen Dragons Temple.
Those stories of nine dragons slowly faded from people's memory after several decades. Yet in the dungeon beneath the Fallen Dragons Temple, a new legend just begun...
Game Features
is a Roguelike game based on ancient Chinese story. In the game you will experience:
----More than 180 different items, which will have even more combinations.
----Randomly generated maps, every battle is a new challenge.
----Various sons of the Dragon, none of them is the same, and none of them is like the Dragon you have ever known.
Origins
After we finished our last game, we`re considering how to make something special on Chinese Culture.
In other games and comics, such as Kongfu and the Four famous novels are already very common to see. But there is still a lot to be discovered.
Finally, we choose “Artifact” as our theme, and make our story based on “Nine sons of the Dragons”.
So, here comes Tale of Fallen Dragons, a different Chinese style game.
Hope you`ll enjoy it.

Tale of Fallen Dragons is a poorly-translated action roguelite dungeon crawler with procedurally-generated floors which has been abandoned by the developer. They seem to have disappeared in Q1 of 2018 after shipping a massive update which completely overhauled the game from its original idea, leaving it in an almost-finished state (85% according to their Early Access text). Overall, I do not recommend the game to non-Chinese speakers due to it being an unfinished, below average game and because it frankly doesn't stand up to the more iconic games in the genre such as The Binding of Isaac Rebirth and Enter the Gungeon which both set a high bar for the genre. If you're a Chinese speaker then you will be able to get a lot more out of the lore (and know what items do with more clarity) but I still wouldn't recommend the game due to the aforementioned reasons.

Most of the achievements are simple to get and will be acquired as you play the game but the ones related to defeating a boss without taking damage are skill-based and will require you to learn their patterns and become somewhat decent at the game. Moreover, there are a few achievements which are based around collecting specific passive items and the drop rates of some appear to be much lower than others. For example, I had 73/74 achievements after 18 hours and it took me another 3.5 hours just to get the last passive item (and achievement) that I was missing. Furthermore, I have never even seen four of the 214 total items in the game after 21.4 hours of gameplay.

Gameplay
The gameplay is standard for the genre but what drags it down is its unengaging and boring gameplay loop: your character can only wield one weapon at a time and there's no way to modify them (other than improving your Damage, Critical, Range, Attack Speed, and Projectile Speed stats to make them stronger). That being said, each weapon does have two firing modes: a slower and longer-ranged mode, and a faster and shorter-ranged mode which typically does more damage; however, you'll often end up sticking to the one with higher damage output which partially negates the point of having different modes in the first place. Additionally, the passive items that you get mostly provide statistical improvements and very few change how you approach the game or alter the gameplay in any noticeable way. Even worse, those which do change the gameplay often do so in a negative manner and are flat-out detrimental to you, or their benefits are equally outweighed by their penalties. All of this comes together to make the gameplay loop become boring quite quickly due to the small amount of variance that you experience between runs.
The dungeon uses procedurally-generated floors but the generation process is very simple and predictable: for example, you always start in the bottom-left corner of the floor, there are a limited number of room layouts which you will see all of after a few runs, and there will always be one shop, treasure, and boss room. Additionally, these three rooms (in addition to the rarer challenge room) will be the only dead-ends while every other room will always have two or more exits. The enemy variety is also lacking and each set of two floors uses one set of enemies who don't really provide you with engaging combat. Your sprite and the enemies' sprites are also quite large in comparison to the size of the room so there will often be environmental hazards (such as explosive barrels or spikes) and enemies which end up generated right beside you when you enter a room which can lead to unfair damage.
Due to the poor translation, it is difficult to determine what some items do and some were even mistranslated: for example, a number of items refer to your "Attack Speed" but actually affect your Movement Speed. Your base statistics also aren't explained and it isn't obvious what some of them do, and the meta progression system is quite flat and uninspired as it is only used to increase your base stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Movement Speed, Critical, and Luck). There is also no tutorial for any aspect of the game, leading you to have to figure out many things by trial-and-error which isn't helped by the poor translation or the complete lack of non-Chinese documentation (a good chunk of which is outdated anyways due to the massive update that was released in Q1 of 2018 which completely changed the game).
Graphics
The graphics look quite nice and the sprites are very well animated but one thing which I dislike is that the character sprites are reminiscent of something you'd find on a mobile game and I'm not a fan of that kind of look. One negative is that the death animation of some enemies is slow and might lead you to think they're still alive, when they're actually not, which could make you waste shots in more frantic moments (at least until you become accustomed to the animations).
Sound
The music is your generic atmospheric dungeon-delving background music which serves well as background noise but isn't anything special to listen to. I somehow listened to this music for 13 hours without getting tired of it but switched to my own music anyways to make the experience more enjoyable. I rarely comment on sound effects in my reviews but this one highly annoyed me: one of the weapons' sound effects make it sound like it's firing twice as often as you actually shoot the projectiles. I'm not sure if they reduced the weapon's Firing Speed and forgot to change the sound effect but it sounds so broken that I found myself avoiding that weapon altogether.
Story
The story is given to you via optional conversations with other characters that you can engage in at the start of a floor. It seems to be very simple but the poor translation of the dialogue doesn't help in conveying the full scope of the story. That being said, the game is rife with actual Chinese lore: you can look up every monster and boss in the "Anecdotes" menu and view the historical artifact or mythical creature that they're based on. There's even a sub-section for the game world's lore which depicts the birth of the world, as well as the dragons that act as the bosses in the game, using cave drawings. Overall, it's very cool but is unfortunately mired by the poor translation.
Conclusion
The game is based on a cool concept and definitely has potential but that will probably never be realized since the developer disappeared and the game has been abandoned. It isn't very accessible to non-Chinese speakers and, due to its unfinished state, there are far better and more polished games in the genre.
As a result, I don't recommend this game unless you're a Chinese speaker or are passionate about the culture. Even then, only get this game when it goes on sale for 75% off at 2.50 USD[/ur]. Otherwise, stick to The Binding of Isaac Rebirth which regularly goes on sale for or Enter the Gungeon which regularly goes on sale for 50-60% off at 7.50 to 6.00 USD.
Abandoned game, however existing content is still worth picking up on sale if you're into Chinese culture.
Nope.
Overall score 6.5/10
This game owns a excellent originality and the monster designs are very innovative.
However, The hand feeling is biased; The proportion of luck in the game is obviously too large (compared with other Roguelike games ) ; The music is somewhat rigid; The playing methods are stiff.
The WORST is that the production team abandoned it! Don't think about fixing any problems, and the game won't be further optimized and updated. (a little regret)
The game itself is neat but the promised online co-op is only a lame firefight mode while u have a discannect after 20 seconds when ur not the host. Very disappointing and kinda sad :(. Would enjoy playing the game with normal co-op tho.
It's a chinese themed Isaac/Gungeon type game. Fairly rough, as it should be, but poorly translated. Functional, but a bit tricky to figure some things out.
Worth the price, in my opinion.
I bought Tale of Fallen Dragons before they had done the English translation. I have only played 80+ minutes so far but am enjoying it and can see myself playing it lots more. Devs are doing a good job with updates too. So, yeah, definitely recommended.
