Game is still fun but really needs a remaster for more quality of life improvements as it's really outdated. This was the first 3D game I played ever
This does work on modern systems so ignore any reviews that say it doesn't. This game would benefit massively from a remake/remaster though cause the controls are difficult to say the least. Loved this on N64 and still better than anything Disney has made.
Shadows of the Empire is a game, yes indeed. This was one of the first 3d games I'd ever played back in 98 - 2000 range. I remember vividly, seeing the hoth battle and my jaw hitting the floor only to be exceeded by rogue squadron a short time later. The levels range from excellent to close to rage quit frustration and that's due to a couple factors which are largely issues with the pc version. Oddly Dash (our protagonist - if Charlton Heston dressed up as 90's comic book han solo.) will move forward and back with the mouse as you move it. This can be frustrating as it's something you can't change in options and you'll need to be constantly aware of it as you navigate platforming sections, thankfully he'll only move gingerly forward and back unless you're using your mouse like a wii remote. I found that this can be useful occasionally for tiptoeing dash around pitfalls. Other issue which i never experienced with the n64 version is that dash will glide through the air or along the ground, like the textures become a "slip and bleed" randomly. this is infuriating on the planet gall level holy god. thankfully check points are aplenty and if you're playing on easy or medium, you'll have plenty of lives. Game play overall is fun, 3rd person strafe shooter style akin to the dark forces and Jedi knight games obviously. Feels very close tonally to empire strikes back, because events occur around empire strikes back and I like that. It adds some new and interesting characters from the comic series which came out along side the game because george lucas said "uuuuhhhhh yeah I like that" and made it canon. Overall you get a series of fun and occasionally frustrating dungeons to blast troopers in and three vehicle centred levels, five if you include the turret sections in Dash's ship the outrider, which I was obsessed with as a kid. If you're a big fan of the original trilogy and some of the early expanded universe material (the real expanded lore) lets be real here. Than you're going to have a pretty good time with this if you don't mind the omnipresent jank factor. It's still very playable. Just wish someone would do a full modded overhaul because I've got zero idea how any of that works yo. Shoot first and hug the walls ya filthy animal!
Unplayable on PC. Everything was sped up and the controls felt terrible. was a great game on N64
The gold standard of what to expect from a Star Wars adventure game: Schizophrenic
Game old. Controls janky. Graphics primitive. Music decent. Gameplay fun. Difficulty cheap at times. Game good. Me like game.
I got this game because I had it on the N64 and thought I could have some nostalgic fun. And I would have, if the game supported controller input. There is a user defined input option, but it's still limited to the keyboard. Which is fine if your used to that, but not if your a controller person. So if your a keyboard and mouse type person then give this a try, otherwise, STAY AWAY!
I was so excited when I saw this. But unfortunately I cant recommend it with how bad the controls are. I played up until the Gall Spaceport stage. Being unable to disable mouse movement is seriously annoying. So unless you are happy playing this game was pure keyboard control, certain platforming areas are very annoying. I tried with PS5 controller, but its not much better since the game only detects inputs from one joystick.
IF you could disable forward/back movement on the mouse, but allow mouse for turning this would be a near perfect experience.
WOW
This is a classic Star Wars title right here, made right before the Prequels came out and takes place between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The story of the game isn't terribly important but it adds a nice flavor, there is a book out there for those interested. You play as a man named Dash Rendar, he's like Han Solo in some ways and even has a similar ship called the Outrider
With all that out of the way, this game has a nice variety of different missions, some will have you fighting in ships, turret sections, one will have you on a speeder bike, but most will have you on foot fighting against Stormtroopers, Wampas, droids and other baddies! Every on foot mission has a boss you need to take out.
I feel there's only one bad level in the game and it's the Beggar's canyon speeder bike mission, the rest are either really fun to not bad.
If there's two missions I would have to say are the best would be the battle of Hoth, it really set the standard for future Star Wars games on how to do a good Hoth mission. My next favorite would have to be either the escape from Echo base or the Ord Mantel junkyard.
The controls are a bit slipperry on foot but it's manageable once you get into the game.
I'd highly recommend this one if you're looking to play a real piece of Star Wars history.
Can we get some gamepad controls on this game please and thank you?
Does not work in modern system. Don't buy it.
loved playing it on N64. love playing it on steam
I'am glad to play this game again.
ok n64 star wars game. very old!
One of my all time favorite Star Wars games. Wild replaying it on the Steam Deck. 10/10.
my first game when owning n64
miss the day coming home from school and playing
One of my favorite games for the N64. Brought back awesome memories and the fact that it’s way more enhanced in terms of graphics and story explanation I was way too eager to replay it again. However, the controls are terrible. Trying to use my XBox controller and it’s not as easy to setup as it should be. It got really frustrating and somewhat uncomfortable.
Lots of memories playing this game pre the prequel movies. Great book also!
I have always adored this game
The game is fun and the story is very interesting the only problem I have is that it doesn't have full controller support
This pc port is definitely interesting.. The controls and physics are not great. But the fact that you can play the game with voice acting and motion cut-scenes is pretty neat and I like having the fps at 60.
no matter what you can always rely on the good old n64 titles to keep you entertained and shadows of the empire does just that. if you arent old enough to know what its like to live the nostalgia you need to play games like this to know where todays games got there roots from.
You know all those third-person shooters you play nowadays? The ones that are all "cinematic" with seemingly obligatory vehicle sections? Yeah, you can thank this game for all that. Releasing in late 1996, this game is the blueprint for your average TPS today. Is it super smooth like all those new games? No. Is it an unplayable mess or too "old" to be good. Absolutely not. Whether you're a Star Wars fan or want to play a piece of gaming history, you cannot go wrong playing this game.
Great story, great fun bosses, and I recommend you try this game out because at least it's better than Star Wars Outlaws.
I loved this game on the N64. I know it has its quirks, but I'm willing to put up with old 3D game issues to enjoy this again. But the PC controls... made this experience just unplayable for me. What a bummer.
Awesome game, but recommend only played if you have the N64 controller mapped correctly. Very nostalgic.
