Features
Some of the game's features and mechanics include:
- Choose from a selection of different grape varieties, each with their own demands.
- Dynamic weather system reflecting the unpredictability of real world climate.
- Each complete playthrough lasts 60 in-game years, but Players can continue playing without contributing to their final score.
- Craft wine through the game's 4 winemaking processes: Crushing, Fermentation, Pressing and Ageing. Each type of grape needs to be crafted a certain way to achieve the best results, so you'll have to learn and master each one.
- Start out with a single planting tile, then expand your Estate to up to 33 tiles, using 6 different tile types. Some tiles affect the ones around it, so placement is key.
- Customize your estate with ambient items.
- CHANCE & CIRCUMSTANCE: Terroir's random event and mission system. Players can open the Mystery Box and choose between CHANCE (a random event that could either have a positive or undesirable outcome) or CIRCUMSTANCE (a mission that a Player completes for rewards, or gets penalized for failing).
- Join Wine Awards for a chance to earn bonuses to your wine's value and your Estate's renown.
- Clean, minimalist design and gorgeous low-poly 3D models.
- Original soundtrack composed and performed by Singapore's CLARQuinet ensemble.
Put on your field gloves, grab a pair of pruning shears and build your Chateau literally from the ground up. Good luck, and cheers!

I got some good play on this game for its price, but I don't know that I'll really return to it. Fun enough for tycoon game enjoyers, but the UI is rough and there are some quirks to the play that are hella inconsistent-- as other players have noted, money really seems to do its own thing and some of the optional quests/challenges just aren't rewarding enough.
Probably fun if you loveee farming sims and tycoon games and have a few extra bucks to spare.
I wish there was a "mixed" option for reviews, but in the end I just can't with a good conscience recommend this to the general public. It's especially sad seeing the reviews from 2017 declaring that the game is being worked on and the bugs will be fixed, when in 2024 it's abundantly clear this hasn't and won't happen. But, if you're like me, hardcore into any kind of managerial game, and happy to absolutely micromanage every moment of gameplay without the possibility of automation or letting up for a second without risking severe backsteps or possibly your whole save, Terroir is pretty okay.
The game is clearly built on a fantastic idea, but the execution is lacking so incredibly badly. The map works, I think the actual wine making system itself is fantastic, I love that levelling up actually takes multiple years (it keeps the game from dragging out in endgame for way too long, a common issue in managerials), and in general there are so many small things dotted out in this game that makes me think that yeah, with some more development, this could have been a titan in this niche.
But. *But.* This game is terribly balanced. There is a random weather system which affects how fast or slow your grapes mature, and there is nothing you can do to affect it. Your only option is to cut foliage - but if you cut too much, and get hit by a month of clear skies (which the game sometimes calls sunny weather, for a bit of inconsistency to confuse new players) your grapes will overmature super fast. Lategame you can get the ability to grow back foliage, but it grows it to "optimal" (which basically means "grapes will not mature anymore", not optimal) meaning that if a single second of rain hits, they will de-mature. So if you don't cut it, you risk the grapes undermaturing, and if you cut, you risk it overmaturing.
This means a lot of crops will randomly die or make bad wine. To make things worse, you have no forecast nor any way to *get* a forecast to help you plan even a little bit, and with how sensitive many of the vines are, this means you're pretty much stuck with the basic ones unless you want to micromanage every second of the growth season or savescum until you get a good year and they don't die from a fungus infestation.
There is absolutely no way to excuse this abysmal reliance on pure RNG, with no way to upgrade your setup or in any way protect yourself even in the lategame, in a game like this. In the end, you can have the worst setup in the world but make a hundred thousand dollars if the weather's good, or have a perfect vineyard ruined by the weather. If this is meant to be some kind of statement on the difficulty of making a living in modern agriculture, that should be made clear. As it is now, it just seems like bad design.
The finances make no sense - I want to point out, though, that unlike what other reviews have said, you will never go bankrupt if your money is positive. You go bankrupt if you have -10 000, so if you have 15k, but your expenses are 25k, you'll go bankrupt in the blink of an eye. The problem is that you have no way of knowing from month to month what your incomes and expenses are (there is a financial overview, but it's hilariously bad - it told me I had made a negative million dollars in a year when I'd gone up 700k) so any time you dip below 30k it's a bit of a gamble. There is no warning, there's no backup save, there's absolutely nothing - suddenly you're just booted out to a "game over" screen.
Your income also doesn't come on the turn of the month, unlike expenses, but the exact point of the month before when you made the decision to sell. So you need to remember at what stages of the month every piece of income will arrive, and keep track of how many months you can count on a certain wine selling before it runs out, and plan your sales accordingly to hopefully make sure you'll have more than whatever your expenses will be at the end of the month.
...See what I mean with the absolute micromanagement thing?
It's such a shame, because somewhere in the code there is a game I really enjoy. With a rebalance and bugfixing, I believe Terroir could be an absolute slam dunk for people like me, but I cannot with a good conscience recommend it in its current state. Not without knowing if you, the person reading this, is a hardcore management fan or not. I'm sorry, I just can't.
As a tycoon game, it starts out decently ok. The early game progression follows a sensible trajectory. But once you're in year 4-5 and try to branch out into anything but the most basic wines, you hit a wall fast. It costs 100 renown for the first upgrade to the estate, which unlocks important features, but after 5 years I'm still at like 30 renown. And it is impossible to control for too little rain, you can trim back, but can't do anything to help protect your plants from burning. It was fun for 3 hours, and then just got frustrating. Unbalanced and under cooked game.
Extremely niche response here, but as a winemaker the whole process here is garbage. I know you don't play all games for its realism, but this is so far from that for me that it's unplayable and illogical. Sorry, but no good
Fun, simple, straightforward, and the price is just right.
I wish there was some expansions.
