Fun, but short. It should be noted that on some controllers, grabbing is counter-intuitive and only works if the trigger does not click, otherwise it instantly crushes anything that's to be held. It would be much better if other locomotion methods were added, since teleportation is very restrictive in this game.

In any case, I was hungry, so I ate the entire city!

I really want to give this game a positive review. As a concept it's a fantastic idea, but this game has poor execution. Here is a breakdown of the Pros and Cons:

          Pros:
The concept - You're a Kaiju, you're big, and you get to smash building, cars, and people.
Scoring - High score creates some re-playability.
Art - I enjoy the design of the worlds.

          Cons:
Limited world scale - The world is fairly small and limited to a simple objective each level.
Few challenges - There is very little in the way of diverse objectives.
The music - When I play a game as a Kaiju, I expect the music to be epic, like a Toho production, reflective of the scale of my character and the events occurring, instead we get a looped rendition of "Mary had a little Lamb" that gets grating very quickly.
Interactivity - Yes, you can smash buildings, people, and objects in the world, but I constantly found myself wanting to throw things, however I could never seem to pick anything up. I noticed this right at the very beginning and it became immediately frustrating, especially when I was being attacked by planes. Also, equally important, I was constantly hunched over attempting to smash buildings. I found it was *much* easier to sit on the floor rather than stand playing this. Not comfortable for more than a few minutes.
Controls - I would like to be able to alter the controls from teleport to walking with control stick. As a Kaiju it's way more interesting to stomp through a city. Teleporting takes me out of the experience.

Overall, I'm sad this isn't better. I love the idea and would love to engage in some epic Kaiju battles, but I don't see myself returning to King Kaiju.

Fun premise but severely lacking content. You can beat all four levels in around 30 minutes and they offer zero replay value. There's few fun interactions in game, eating people, crushing buildings, throwing trees, but overall most things just explode when you touch them. The controls for breathing fire or shooting lasers was difficult to activate and felt like I was missing some sort of recharge bar or other mechanic. I can't recommend this game and judging by its "full release" I don't think it will improve.

The other negative reviews all say the same thing, and I pretty much agree. The levels aren't interesting, they don't feel like a real, cohesive world but like the same 3 models plopped over a small section of a canvas. The scale is accurate, but this doesn't work in its favor. Picture yourself bending down to pick up an action figure that a kid left on the middle of the living room floor. Now do it 50 times. That's the first level. I wanted so badly to be able to move, even if it was in big, lumbering kaiju steps, but you're stuck with the teleport and its really weird, long load times. Which could also, just maybe, be okay, but the items are placed so far apart that you can't beat up a block of houses. You have to teleport to one, wait for the"teleport load," touch it, watch it instantly crumble in a second, rinse, repeat. It's like when you're forced to watch a 15 second ad before a 5 second YouTube video--just a waste.

It's definitely not a game, just a toy. But it's not even a fun toy.

You play as a Kaiju "Godzilla" and destroy a bunch of towns, each have a certain objective to complete it, like

Game is very simplistic you move by teleporting, you destroy by hitting, you eat by putting things close to your mouth.

Performance is very good, as all games with basic, low polygon cartoon graphics like this should have. It also has this "helicopter view" so others can see your havok as if a news copter was reporting it... pretty cool when showing it off in a party.

Game is family friendly, my kid loves this game, and i have to say i also enjoy the random sensless destruction lol.

Pretty fun game, but its also really simple with simple mechanics, so not "deep", but fun.

This is a fun VR demo, but not much more. It's entertaining to get to move around giant hands and destroy buildings and swat planes out of the sky for about 20 minutes, but after that, there's not enough to the game to be entertaining. You can't die, and doing damage (the goal of every 'level') becomes repetitive.

It's cool, pick it up for a buck maybe? But I'm not gonna recommend it as a game.

It's the most fun I've had in VR. The gameplay is simple, but fun. You are a giant monster and must cause mayhem in the city. Smash buildings, eat people, throw cars and helicopters. It's a short game with only four missions, but for the price, it's worth it. I rather enjoyed picking people up and throwing them at planes and helicopters. Hopefully they add more missions and maps, but for now, I just keep replaying what's there. It's a wonderfully chaotic game.

Very simple but fun, who doesn't want to be a giant monster rampaging through a city? Don't expect a ton out of this, just enjoy it for it's simplicity and have fun. It really does need 360 degree, I only have the two Oculus rift sensors, and I can get by, but I can really tell that if I had full 360 degree support that it would make a big difference as movement is a bit more difficult.

          Played On: HTC Vive

Fire Hose Games have both published and developed a small handful of successful games over the last five years. King Kaiju, one of their latest endeavors, sees the company broadening their catalogue with a second virtual reality release. As one might expect from the title, King Kaiju is a Godzilla simulator; you romp around a small town, destroy buildings, annihilate planes, kill and eat people, and breathe fire all over the place.

There are a total of three levels, and each of them have their own objectives; kill 40 people, destroy 155 buildings, and cause $315,000 worth of property damage. The maps aren't very diverse, and in all honesty they all looked the same to me. The gameplay feels excruciatingly sluggish due to the slow fade out/in when using the teleport locomotion, and in some areas where the objects are spaced further apart it feels like it takes absolutely forever to destroy buildings. Catching and eating people is fun, as well as breathing fire all over the city; two things that the game doesn't exactly tell you how to accomplish.

King Kaiju could benefit from a small opening tutorial. Until I delved into the forums I had no idea how to breathe fire (hold the two grip buttons), and I'm still not entirely sure how I'm supposed to grab the news chopper or the scoreboard helicopter. You can also apparently crush items by picking them up and pressing the grip buttons, another feature that I didn't know existed until I was out of VR. There's also a problem here with performance, and during the last level the game went completely blue and forced me to restart from Steam HomeVR. Enabling SSAO in the options screen also puts the game at abysmal framerates, and makes the screen-door effect 100x more noticable.

I came to King Kaiju after playing VRobot, and I must say I was quite disappointed at the lack of content, tutorial, and slow-in-comparison gameplay. The pricetags between these titles are significant, however, and the fact that King Kaiju is only $5.49 CAD makes it much more palatable for the majority of gamers. It's not a bad game, but it's only 15-30 minutes of mediocre fun at best; you could probably tack on an additional half-hour if you're an achievement hunter. I wish there was a neutral option, but due to the performance issues I'll have to go with a downvote on this one.

Rating: 2.5/5.0 - It's not awful, but it's not great.

This game can be a ton of fun, but I can't recommend it in the current state for a few reasons:

-Your monster is too large. While it is cool to be towering over the city, I would find it more rewarding to smash a building that is as big as me, not just up to my knees.

-The loading screen is in instant source of motion sickness, there is text spinning in circles around you.

-The ice cream trucks are too loud. I know this seems silly, but every person I've put in this game made a statement about how obnoxious it was. It really does punish you for wanting to take you time and play around if you have to keep listening to loud and shrill versions of "Mary had a little lamb", and "Ride of the valkyries". Just let us turn this off.

So if the devs disable icecream trucks (Or allow use to disable them), and rescale your monster (Or allow you to choose your monsters scale) I would instantly suggest this game, but I find those points really devaluing the experience.

Also, I will be very excited to play this when a foot tracking solution is implemented .

Okay... I'm going to be upfront. This game was a silly bit of fun, though I'm not sure it's worth £4. I got it in a bundle with a few other games for about £5 and at that price point, it's fan-goddamn-tastic.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqK5wS1a-AY

The destruction, the freedom, the ability to pick up and throw/smash/eat anything you want is great. I took a great amount of pride in realising you could smash the helicopter containing your scoreboard out of the sky. There just isn't all that much to the game. You teleport, you pick up, you throw, you punch, you breath fire. That's about it. Okay, there's a hidden kitty mode that gives you laser eyes and cat sounds but that's the only real appreciable difference.

Throughout you'll be listening to the same ice-cream truck song and getting shot in the face by these annoying gnats of planes, you'll hear the same teleport sound each time and you'll be tasked with assignments like "Smash 250 buildings."On that front, there's really not a whole hell of a lot to do. The 4 levels are all just various sizes of city with the last offering buildings the same as you to flat out run through (provided your playspace is big enough, there's no artificial locomotion here) but they're still most indistinguisable.

However... that doesn't mean, by ANY stretch of the imagination that this is not something I'd reccomend. I whole-heartedly do. While it may not have much "game" to it, what it does have is one of the best stress relief setups in all of VR gaming. There's something massively cathartic about throwing a police car into a helicopter, watching them both fall out of the sky in to a building which then topples over and crushes a crowd of pedestrians, the survivors of whom you then fry up with your TOTALLY-NOT-A-RIP-OFF-OF-ATOMIC-BREATH™.

THAT'S where the fun lies in this game. After a hard day you'll REALLY enjoy just dropping yourself off in a city, bending it over, and making it your bitch. :D

This is a cool concept that's been hampered by some poor design decisions. It ought to have been awesome to stomp through and destroy a town, but instead you end up painfully bent over waving your hands frantically at nothing. The look of the game is nice and the feel of smashing things is satisfying but it's hard to enjoy.

-You ought to be able to play this game standing, but instead the structures are at knee-height. It calls attention to the fact you wish you had feet rather than gracefully designing around it. I ended up sitting on the floor.
-You get punished for teleporting with an annoying fade to black, so you don't want to do it, but you constantly have to.
-You can kind of pick things up and throw them, but they don't do any damage to other structures. You want to be able to smash a house with an ice cream truck, but you can't.
-The objectives of the level float oddly out of your line of sight, so you aren't really aware that you're supposed to be doing something besides smashing as much as possible (why would you want to do anything else anyway?)
-The screaming humans become disturbing after a while.

The game is cheap and has some interesting things about it but I'm still waiting for a good godzilla experience.

There's very little there, got bored very quickly. And even if it was more enjoyable the one gimmic of the game is greatly haltered by the fact that the physics are extremely wonky, taking away the one place satisfaction could potentially be found in this game.

Also hasn't been updated in many months so it doesn't seem like any of its issues are going to be addressed. Save your money.

It's not entirely a game. You play an unbeatable monster. However, it's fun and really immersive. There's something about attacking a city while tiny airplanes dive in at you that makes you forget about everything else. This game ends up being more threatening to my walls and furniture than any other because you kind of get lost in the rampant destruction.

I wish the game had been more forward about how to use the breath weapon. You grab both triggers on the Vive to breathe fire (or shoot lasers if you picked the giant cat). Also, I don't know that this game will pull me in forever, but for what I've paid for it, I got tons of enjoyment.

I'd love to recommend this, and I've thought hard about if I should review it at all. But at the end of the day it just isn't a game and the fact this is the 1.0 version out of early access seems to imply the dev is happy with it as it is which really isn't right. There is potential but its woefully light on content and gameplay right now.

The premise is fantastic, play a huge godzilla like monster (well the head and hands of one anyway) and rampage around a city area smashing up buildings. But sadly that's where the gameplay stops, you just smash buildings for essentially no reason. There is a target level of destruction at which point you unlock the next of the available 5 levels. But beyond that nothing happens, nothing challenges you, you simply cannot fail. Even the planes that show up form level 2 onward to strafe you with machine gun fire don't actually do anything as you can't die, or even be hurt.

As it stands its okay fun the first time through which will take 10-15 mins. After that there's almost nothing to bring you back. Early hopes of the game opening up and more depth and challenge being introduced give way to a realisation that it really isn't a game at all. Instead it's basically a toy lego town to play in. Maybe good for very young kids but for most this is going to be too shallow of an experience to hold your attention.

Sadly its another seriously underdeveloped and shallow VR experience, something which is really letting down the incredible potential of VR at the moment and possibly one of the reasons why I'm being more harsh than I might otherwise be. But VR devs need to step up to the plate and make more compelling and engaging content or this amazing tech won't last.

Anyway with a lot of work it could become amazing but it seems the dev is happy with it so that is unlikely. I hope I'm wrong about that. In the end I would of refunded, only it crashed on exit apparently and steam kept running the clock. So I'm stuck with it. No biggie as at least its quite cheap and I can hope that the dev might return to the project and add some game to this interesting idea.

If you'd ever wondered what it would be like to be Godzilla then wonder no longer. This game is a fun little stress reliever where you can just go around and destroy whatever you like. The only con about this game is that it gets repetitive after a few minutes. It would've been nice if there was some sort of armed force fighting back against you. Maybe that would've made the game more fun. Would like to see that in future patches.

This has a lot of potential.

Right now it's _very_ early access, however depending upon what the developer adds, this could be a modern (VR!) take on Rampage which to me is an immensely satisfying thought.
I'm very keen to see where this goes, and I'll be right here on the ride.
