I can't say that I have enjoyed playing this game. It's really frustrating if you want to get all the achievements. You can forget to get perfect hands in the early game - you need to grind like crazy for really overpriced upgrades. Even then, I got way too often situations where I've just clicked through hand and couldn't get any match.
Another thing that has put me off is the upgrade system. I have gathered enough coins to buy an upgrade in the middle of the hand set (around 8th hand out of 10) . By all means don't try to purchase anything before completing the 10th hand or you will loose that progress and will have to start over.
And as the last thing a little minus. For a game called Seven Seas Solitaire I was hoping for a nice Sea Shanties music in the background, sadly there is nothing of that.
There are lot more solitaire games that are less frustrating, but of course you can give this one a try when it's on sale. :)

Overpriced game that 'features' one of the most broken joker cards in any solitaire game. You can lose all your wild cards (cannon balls in this game) or win the hand perfectly which just freezes the game and makes you replay 10 hands in the worst case. Save yourself the trouble and play all the other (better) solitaire games this developer has made.

6.5/10

Seven Seas Solitaire is fairly average Steam solitaire game - it seems to have been a stepping stone before developer Anawiki's more engaging Avalon Legends titles. It had fairly decent user reviews, and I was attracted to the pirate theme (I live near East Carolina University - go Pirates!). I can't say that the story was mind-blowing, but I never lost interest so much that I stopped reading. References are made to many pirate lore standards, such as Blackbeard, Davy Jones, and cursed crews.

The mini-games (distance cannonball shooting, attacking other ships, high card or low, digging for treasure) were all fairly silly, but were at least thematically appropriate. From time to time as you're clicking through the deck, a roulette wheel will pop up to determine a random event. These mini-games are among the possible outcomes. It might've just been superstition, but I found that the quicker I clicked to stop the roulette wheel, the more beneficial the event. After starting to do this, I received the reward three separate times that just clears all of the cards in the level. I also often had the dolphin clear a card from the board, or randomly found 300 coins in treasure.

Seven Seas unfortunately doesn't give the player any active powers, like the ability to shuffle the board or remove cards (intentionally or randomly). This perhaps makes the act of playing each stage a bit less engaging. However, there is an upgrade menu that allows you to purchase static upgrades (a higher possible score multiplier, for some cards to be removed at the beginning of each level, etc.). So many of these Solitaire card games let you buy an ability to see how many cards are left in the deck, buy additional undos each level, or buy an ability that highlights playable cards. I almost think it's a force of habit for these Solitaire game developers. These are almost always the last abilities I buy, as I don't feel that they legitimately help me finish a level or maximize the resources gained.

One thing I must praise developer Anawiki for is the excellent level design. Seven Seas is a solitaire game that delivers levels in sets of 10 (usually). You're asked to meet a goal for each set of levels, such as a certain amount of gold gained, a certain card combo (removing multiple cards from the board without flipping another over from the deck), and/or a specific number of perfects (removing all cards from a level). Almost every time that I was worried about finishing a goal, a level would pop up where I could acquire a large card combo or make up some lost ground. The mixture of tough levels and more expansive ones kept the tension high, even in a Solitaire game. I often JUST met the goals for a particular set of levels.

If you generally enjoy this type of game, I think you'll have a good time with this one. However, I might recommend Avalon Legends before I recommended this pirate adventure.

I coveted this game for a single reason: the shiny background in the Steam Marketplace. Behold the shiny background:

Pirate Cove

Unfortunately, when actually run up the old profile it is, alas, disappointing. So, let’s review the actual game.

At first I was enthusiastic about this voyage into the blue. I remembered liking Microsoft Solitaire…when I was ten…until I graduated to Freecell. And now, finding I need a reprieve from the doldrums of the empty multiplayer of the highly addictive (and highly recommended) KoiKoi, I thought it would be a worthwhile investment for a shiny new background. Plus pirates.

On the Solitary Main

Immediately I was drawn in by the brightwork: the art being vibrant and thematic and gorgeous. The menu is trim and runs handsomely even on my dilapidated system. A smooth and easy tutorial helped me get my bearings on this new version of Solitaire. And then I was presented with my very own pirate ship.

If you’re a hoarder like all good games have trained you to be, this will be the deciding factor. Once you’re on the account, you get a ship and a pirate kingdom to build and expand. Each upgrade also gives you a perk that makes liberating gold a little easier—for more upgrades—for more gold—for more upgrades. It also helps with the occasional chance and timing minigames.

You can then sail your little ship around the map, accompanied by journal entries that recount your personal odyssey, including sirens and cyclopes and old hermits—it sounds like the wrong genre but it really does include just about every pirate cliché you can fathom, along with a few infamous pirates of history that you easily best with your inherent awesomeness. It’s rather more of a Captain’s Courageous than a Captain Bligh tale, and my enthusiasm for the paragraph-long shore-leave from card-flipping was quickly dowsed by the juvenile presentation. This is unfortunate since I found it to be one of the only motivations for continuing to play.

Rules of Engagement

For you Solitaire shellbacks, you no doubt already know the ropes. But if you’re barely an able seaman, it will take barely a minute to learn. The game is a TriPeaks variation of Solitaire with a motley mess of cards placed in whatever direction they so please (not a standard deck). Claiming cards requires a bit of tacking and jibing to reach a longer run for scoring combos—this is necessary if you actually want a worthy bounty—but there’s no penalty for failure.

However, amongst the mermaids and monkeys you will be given obstacles to overcome that prevent such runs. While it might initially seem like a sea-worthy challenge, this is actually an impediment to intelligent playing. The only part of the game that requires any savvy is planning ahead for your next move—when there are options. However, when two columns are blocked off by a sandbar, and another cluster is boarded off by planks, you are left with very few options and sit there instead plinking off, one card at a time, whatever happens to turn up in your deck. There have been occasions when I had only two open columns provided, which, if you do the math, adds up to tedium. And though you can purchase upgrades to see beyond the top card in the column, the number is often obscured, and the number of cards in the pile is often obscured, so again, there is no opportunity for true strategy. Random acts of chance also remove or add half of the gold and much-coveted cannonballs (wildcards) that you have accrued. And with no way to bail out of a game when your luck runs rotten, this quickly becomes dull and frustrating for anybody desiring something of a challenge more than find-the-next-number. But, if you are ten, or if you just want to idly pass time without using your brain-pan, maybe that is enough.

Ambiance

One thing I can say is that it is a very calming game. It includes some lovely background ambience with waves and birds and creaking timbers—none of that violent pirate stuff. I turned the ambience (♫) up and the annoying systems sounds (🔈) off and was able to enjoy some very relaxing shipboard downtime (bringing along ASMR Captain Jamro for added enjoyability). However, I really missed the soothing sorting of classic Klondike Solitaire. In this version, your cards just sink into the depths of the discard pile; there’s no stash of triumph for the cards to come gleefully spilling down from.

Charting the Course

I have not been able to finish the game, but at fourteen hours I have completed fifteen stages, which I reason to be about halfway through. I have no interest in playing longer than this so I cannot tell if you if the story improves.

Recommendation

While I was initially quite impressed with the surface features of the game, with time my interest was replaced with frustration and boredom. There simply is not enough challenge to the game—which might make it attractive to, perhaps, children, along with the colorful art and easy-to-read story. But I can’t imagine it holding their attention for very long either. A young pirate enthusiast would be far more entertained and learn far more practical buccaneer basics from a game like Sid Meier’s Pirates. For those who would prefer a little more exercise for their brains and enjoy hunting for cutthroat opponents, I invite you to join me in KoiKoi Japan as an alternative. Unfortunately the only people I can recommend this game to are those diehard Solitaire collectors who merely play the game to turn off the brain.

I'm a sucker for pirate games, and I'm a sucker for solitaire games. Instabuy on sale.

What now? The graphics and animations are pretty good, there's an attempt at a detailed storyline (which unfortunately seems to be lifted from Monkey Island-- a woman called Elaine who's forced to marry a zombie pirate? Anyone?), although it kinda falls flat. Points for trying though. There's basically no soundtrack during gameplay, which would be a big turn-off but I learned to just listen to my music player instead. I'm cool with that. You can just put on the Monkey Island soundtracks if you like.

Unlike MI there's really no hope of any jokes in the game. It's that straightforward.
Difficulty-wise, the game requires you to be really, really good, or more likely, really really lucky to fulfill all of the goals. This gets boring and you may end up just cheating for extra money, in which case the game is still challenging but doable. Considering it's got hundreds of stages, you really don't want to start redoing a specific level endlessly.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience, but it adds nothing to either genre (pirates/solitaire). No reason not to play it, though.

Seven Seas Solitaire forces you to assess probabilities even more than other solitaire games. While there is randomness in it, there is an obvious bunching up of cards with the same face value. Some stages are easy to clear and others are very difficult because of the way parts of the deck remain locked until a specific card or set is cleared. One interesting game feature is a cannon that blasts a card off, enabling continued progress towards a long sequence. Choosing when to fire a canonball can make a critical difference to the outcome.

Solitaire games all stick to the same formula, but Seven Seas Solitaire seems refreshingly different, even though it is much the same as the rest.

This is a simple, fun solitaire game with a pirate/age of sail theme. Basically, the plot is that you have been wronged for the kidnapping of your beloved, and you have had to take to a life of piracy to try and find and rescue her... and maybe clear your name. The solitaire itself is fun, relaxing... and sometimes challenging.

Now, I would suggest getting this on discount... or in the bundle... Maybe both.

One of the best solitaire games I've had the pleasure of playing. The graphics are nice, there is an actual nice story to go along with the game and a matching soundtrack to get you into the mood of navigating the seven seas!

I love the added touch of the "gamble card" popping up in the deck where you press on the button to get either a random mini-game, some gold or help and also a chance of bad luck too (losing gold).

You can buy power ups and items to re-build your settlement and upgrade your ship (although I do find some of the items are quite pricey)!

Really great game for solitaire lovers and would recommend this one highly if you love card games.

On the fence with this one. I do enjoy the game but it really hates to generate odd numbered cards, so you end up sifting through almost the whole deck to get the one card you need. Also, there are way too many cards on the playing field, making everything drag on and on. I like the added bonus cards, but there seem to be more whammys than good, for me at least. Overall, still a nice solitaire game.

Seven Seas Solitaire does not use a standard deck. I think each hand may be composed of two decks combined.

The graphics are lovely and the music and sound effects are relaxing. I see others rave about the story in their reviews. I enjoy tales of piracy as much as anyone, but I found this narrative neither compelling nor memorable.

In the beginning, the game is a lot of fun. You are having runs of 50 or 75 cards in a row and achievements are flying. But, about 8 hours in, this game starts to get really frustrating. When you repeatedly have to go through half the deck trying to find a match for one of the five multiples of the same card you have blocking the board, it starts to lose its appeal. When you have just one column remaining (because that's how the mechanics of the layout worked) and it is composed of multiples of the same card stacked one on top of the other, there is no real chance of winning. In addition, the wild cards (cannon balls) are much more expensive than you can hope to earn from a potentially losing board, despite having all the power ups.

I'm not sure if these situations were just bad luck rather than poor (perhaps maliciousl?) layout design, but I guess I hit a couple of hours of bad luck (spread out over several days). I got to about 2/3 of the way through the story. At this point, when I won a hand, it didn't feel like winning. Rather it felt that I had gotten lucky (and not in the good way). While on some boards I simply had no chance at all.

I have no motivation to finish this game even on a casual basis and will cut my losses. I think I'll look for a solitaire from another developer.

Seven Seas Solitaire is a simple, sweet and really fun game to play.

The gameplay is straightforward, you pick a card higher or lower than the one in your hand and make chains to clear the deck. Easy as that. It follows the same rules as a lot of other solitaire games on steam, and as a huge plus it even has the option to redo the last hand you played so that you can try again (and again) for that perfect 3 star score!
The usual items can be bought with in-game gold to improve your gameplay and these come in the form of upgrades for your ship (The Falcon) and island- very nice idea!

There's a chance to unlock mini-games called Tides of Fortune and these can either help or hinder your progress in your current game and I found them to be a nice little addition to the solitaire aspect, one of them is very hard to aim because its moving so fast but it was still fun nonetheless!
The artwork is simple yet effective and the sound effects/music is just right for this type of game, nothing too distracting whilst you line up those big combos :)
I haven't completed the game yet but the story so far is light-hearted and flows smoothly, and I love the way it's portrayed in a journal format.

Only a quick review but this game I feel is spot on for a solitaire game and it's one I'm very glad I picked up. The £6.99 pricetag may be a little hefty I suppose, especially as I don't know how long the game is yet but if you can get this gem on sale or in a bundle then you really should buy it!

Arr! Ahoy, me mateys. A pirate themed solitaire game awaits thee!

It's the "3 Towers" type of solitaire (the kind used in Faerie Solitaire) where you have to clear the board by clicking on cards with a number either higher or lower than the current one in the discard pile. You can work up some pretty good chains by going back and forth like this: 5-6-7-6-5-4-3-2-3-2, etc. you can use a cannonball as a wild card (it shoots off one of the cards on the board) and continue your chain.

There's a story for those interested in that. Something about boy meets girl, fall in love, but girl's father doesn't want her to marry boy. Blah blah blah. I've been skipping it since stories are not my thing. But it's there for those who love stories.

Gameplay is solid, they give you enough cards in your deck to clear the board most of the time. Of course, luck is a factor and sometimes you'll have to replay a level if you want all perfects. Some cards are locked and you have to do something to unlock them, and some have to be used twice to be cleared.

Unlike other solitaire games similar to this, there are no wild cards with numbers, just cannonballs that can be used on any card, but you don't get many cannonballs. Most I've ever had at one time was four. And there are no other special powers, like in that dragon one where you have to wait for the meter to fill up and you can use their power to slash a card off the board. However you can buy upgrades like "Remove four random cards at beginning of a level" and it does it automitically. So there are upgrades you can buy to help you out but they are not ones you activate yourself. Mostly you gotta rely on your pirate wits, arrr!

The graphics are decent, pirate characters on the faces of the cards, even a monkey and a kraken! Or you can switch to just the normal number card faces if you like. There are nice touches like the journal log of your journey that tells the story, and after clearing a level the results show up on a piece of sailcloth with a spar above and ropes dangling. Stuff like that really sets the scene nicely.

Music and sounds are okay.

Can't think of anything else to say right now. I've played a lot of different solitaire games and this one ranks high for me as a favorite and one I definitely would play again in the future!

I'm enjoying this game. I love the ships/pirates/high seas theme, and so far they're doing a nice job with the story and I really like how the story is told through entries in the captain's log each chapter. I love the sound effects during play - the sound of the water and birds and the ship creaking etc. The game play is solid, the graphics are bright and colorful and fun.

UPDATE: the first 3 or so chapters or so were super easy. I'm now hitting games that I don't clear the board. It's not every single game but it is happening more frequently - this is great because it's now more challenging. Extra bonus - you can replay a game, and, if you want, keep replaying until you get a perfect score.

Not used to this Solitaire version personally and it has some extra mechanics with octopie (sp?) and cannonballs and such as well...

A solitaire game with a story is certainly not common and one where you can build a base as wel...I'm thinking; not common at all...

Graphics are nice and colourful, gameplay did take a little getting used to, it's basically to play a card higher/lower than the one shown but like I wrote you also have other different mechanics. (some cards are damaged so you have to repair them and that's done by getting to the tool...)

It's a bit hard to explain but I like it quite a bit TBH, I'll be playing more of this.
