I absolutely adore this game!
The whole design is incredible, the visuals and soundtrack create such an impressive atmosphere. I also love the gameplay since the puzzles and monster confrontations are fun and clever yet not frustrating, in my opinion. I'm additionally quite content with the pacing as I didn't perceive it to be rushed despite its rather short length, the only thing that makes me sad is the fact that I can't enjoy the game for longer lol.
Moreover I enjoyed how the first two chapters are fully horror and terrifying, meanwhile the second half is mainly sad and upsetting story-wise, yet still manages to keep up with the disturbing atmosphere. In my opinion the narrative is quite well done, which made me very invested in the story. I really enjoyed the way how several dark topics got combined into one tragedy and also how impactful the presentation of everything is. I initially didn't expect myself to end up so hyped and emotional while playing this lol.
Short point and click story game with dark visuals and a dark overall theme, an interesting story that makes you think a little.
One of my personal favorites. I played this, got destroyed and intrigued at the same time. As for the former, you gotta experience it yourself, but the intrigue part is related to the authentic feeling of Taiwanese school life and Tao. What happens in this game could have as well happened in real life, apart from the mystical events, but how can I know for sure, right?
This is a story of one person's sin and punishment. Would you forgive? Buy and find out!
This game is awesome! Even being a point & click it's a game with an interesting story and it can captivate besides being simple in various aspects. I sugest to only search for tips in cases like the piano puzzle (you have to play some notes in a piano and I simply can't do it).
i like this one. it took a bit of time to understand but its really a tragic story. im not very smart.
A Great, underrated horror game
Very nice art style and interesting little story.
AHHHHHH HELP ME
That's what real story telling is about
Loved the riddles in the game
Gee that was a sad story
Small Taiwanese team ! I hope they'll make other games
Signed : a foreigner who lives in Taiwan
Really interesting game to walk through, can be completed fairly quick. Some nice history lessons and engaging story
Worth the price to experience it all
Art. That's pretty much what I can say. It's a small, puzzle focused game, with little-to-none enemies. But it's the story that grasps you.
Detention is a game I played wayyyyy back in high school, and at the time was one of my favorites. Replaying in adulthood, it still is super impressive. it is the first game from Red Candle Games, who went on to make the 3D first person horror Devotion, as well as the Metroidvania Nine Sols. It demonstrates their knack for telling emotional deep stories, while having the best puzzles of any of their games and some striking collage-like visuals.
It would be nearly a 10/10 game for me if not for a couple issues. The pacing is pretty inconsistent- the last chapter being the worst offender. It became a slow paced walking simulator with only 2 puzzles… really tainting the overall experience for me. It also has pretty cryptic storytelling- using flashbacks, poetic language, notes and lore bits. I just really had trouble following the story, which otherwise seemed interesting.
I think that their storytelling style is both impressive but flawed. It gets over detailed in almost all the games, which muddies the heart of the story for me. And it can really drag the gameplay out, which is something I have thought in every game they’ve made.
But still, visually it’s top notch and super reminiscent of the recent Harvester developer games. There is some really fantastic puzzles as well. Chapters 1-3 are pretty great, just wish it had stuck the landing.
nice point & click horror game. interesting story. you can buy both detention & red candles devotion - (unavailable on steam) drm free on https://shop.redcandlegames.com/
Incredible! A must play for horror fans.
Very sad
Yes. Just yes.
Love it.
I was very astonished by this game as I first played years ago ( just the demo) and since them wanted to play it again. To be honest you need to be in a mood to understand it's stlye and vibe, but with that totslly say: This is one of my fav games of all time
It is amazing! Super entertaining and fun to play.
Man this game be crazy. It is a good game though so I would recommend that you try. While playing the game, you could also research about the "White Terror" which is a historical event based in Taiwan which the game makes many references to.
This game is really bad.... i say that because the item puzzles dont make any sense. If you liked the box of orange juice puzzle in silent hill 2 then this is the game for you
I honestly donno what to say :/ . All I can say is I had goosebumps throughout the whole playthrough.
A fantastic game, that blends Taiwanese culture with stunning art and storytelling to bring Taiwan's history to life.
It's a great indie game with a story far richer than I expected. A small scope of features creates a sublime narrative.
top tier game that covers a significant historical event
Amazing artworks and story! Well worth the time and money.
Detention is an incredibly bleak, very pretty, and horrifying game. I really like it!
This game gets a dragon rating of 0/10, for no dragons.
Great game - the story-telling and atmosphere are great.
However, the element of horror slowly falls off throughout the story, and monsters/enemies can only be encountered in certain limited areas.
Expected more Asian mythical beings but really enjoyed the game anyway.
im simply at a loss for words, after playing such a beautiful work of art as this.
Very complete and "light"! It has quite more personality than I expected, definitely recommended if you are looking for a short puzzle-terror game x)
The things we break for our own desires.
Detention is a beautifully written narrative that extends beyond the political aspects of the game. Like the one other game I played from this company, the story is rich in history, character development, and unique visual artistry. While the game is horror in nature, and there were definitely some tense moments, I like that the game did not seem to focus on making it scary; the content and the story does that on its own.
Highly recommended.
fantastic game, i'm going to be depressed thinking about it for months. really can't give it a higher recommendation than that.
When human passions collide with the horrors of historical events, a single tragedy can turn into an avalanche, ready to consume everything in its path.
This poignant narrative truly left a lasting impression on me and lingered in my mind for quite some time, refusing to let me rest.
This game is so much more to meet on eyes,
the history and how also being a Chinese mixed;
I remember the political stories my parents told me so this hits deep.
Amazing story lines, puzzles are superb.
Each story was revealed through notes and past in puzzles.
The visuals is stunning, I'd love to see more games like this!
Also lastly, the audio was so important part of the game.
I'm so impressed by the entire production and devs.
Well done, it felt like watching a long film.
It's like a 2D Silent Hill that centers around a decrepit high school. While I enjoyed the journey the game takes the player on, the story I found to be largely convoluted and nonsensical and it dragged the overall experience down a bit for me. There's no combat, but you hide from enemies by covering your mouth as you pass by them. The puzzles are fairly simplistic, but they are still fun to solve. After chapter 2 the game gets a lot more obscure and I had trouble keeping up with what was going on. I think a simpler story would've made the ending more impactful.
The graphics are nice, at times looking like a painting or a storybook. Sometimes the animations look a little janky because they do that "make a 2D image look like it's moving by stretching the pieces" thing that I always think looks bad in games. The sound design is probably the best thing about it, as the music in general is just beautiful and there are some nice multidimensional sounds like the audio fading out when you pass by an enemy and being replaced by an eerie high pitched noise. The game can be 100% completed in one play through (Saving just before the ending to get the second ending) and while there's not much reason to replay it was still a very interesting experience. Even though it's a foreign game the American translation is fine and it's easy to understand all of the dialogue.
Short and simple but a very nice horror game. It has that nice balance of symbolism and normal story telling that you are able to fully understand the story without needing a video essay explaining - like for example Signalis did for me.
It's scary, it's subtle, it's sad. Pleasantly done simple 2d visuals mixed with satisfying puzzles. If you enjoy horror games, you should play this one.
one of the "finish in one sitting" games, enjoyed it quite a lot!
thanks, i hate it
Good game, but can be better.
one of the best indie horror games i have ever played. amazing horror, amazing story, amazing lore, cool mechanics. everything you could ever ask for, 10/10
Sad little story.
Amazing game, however i wouldn't paint it as a masterpiece some of the reviewers are suggesting it to be.
Story is easy to guess, game is easy to play, some of the puzzles were hard for me to guess but taking a look at others who played it, it could be a me thing.
Soundtrack is banger, art style is really good, gameplay is fairly simple. I'd say this is a Life is Strange meets Silent Hill, with a plot twist that lets you down.
Lyricism in this game is insane. Translations are very well made, and the emotions they were able to convey are eminent beyond comparison & simply unmatchable. If this was only a book, i would still buy it for the same price.
Spoilers ahead:
I wanted this to have a cosmic horror side, so, so bad. Sure, there are cool red rivers, eyes looking at you, but it didn't go over the "Hey its the imagination of the trauma for the soul" type of topic. I would love to see asian myth, some history for the school, background for the ghosts... It's still a very good game for what it offers for 2-4 hours gameplay and especially at a discounted price, i still would love to see another forbidden siren.
Detention is a neat little atmospheric/psychological/survival horror that turns into a walking simulator in the final act.
It's original. It hits right at home. Some say art is supposed to comfort the disturbed and this game did just that. I abso-fucking-lutely love the setting; the made it an integral part of the story and the game. Not for everybody, but I absolutely recommend it if something about it caught your eye, or if you are into grim and horror-driven point-and-click games.
Cant really get into this one. If i'm being as honest as possible it's not really that intriguing or scary at the start and that alone made me not want to continue playing this game. Judging by the reviews most would disagree with me but i just cant see myself putting more time into this.
Story rich, and very intriguing. The game was recommended to me by a friend from taiwan since we touched the topic of this martial law, the game does not have many specifics but it's still very clear what's going on, so between that and the storytelling style it's way too easy to get immersed in it.
The game flows nicely although a bit slowly. Interesting ways to use the perspective, making the feeling they want to convey that much clearer; and despite i got lost many times traversing a simple path (lol) it's not frustrating thanks to the environment.
Admittedly i don't read many books, so take this with a grain of salt; but i like the story from a narrative perspective.
Following the story of this school from the perspective of one student in the context of taiwan during the martial law, it's clear this is headed a very dark way and the whole game gives that dark and... claustrophobic vibe?
Disturbing Cycle of Guilt . Portrayal of historical/political events . short & very well written monologue/story line is intense .
yes
what an agonizing 3 hours this has been... it is so wonderfully written that it made me shed some big burly man tears. the scenery and atmosphere is incredible, and i thought i'd be thrown off by the 2D aspect but I actually thought it was super fitting + made it so much better than it would've been any other way! i'm not sure if it's 100% historically accurate, but i really appreciated the historical and cultural factors too. such a devastating game, and is def worth the experience.
After playing this and Devotion, Red Candle games have effectively become one of my favorite studios out there. This game is excellent for anybody who likes games as a narrative medium. The mechanics are simple, but they work well in service of the story, which is the main element.
There is something that I would like to address though. I've seen comments online accusing the game of romanticizing certain improper relationship. When you play this game, please keep in mind that you are playing from a certain character's perspective, which does not mean that the game advocates for such perspective. In the context of the story, I think it is pretty clear that this specific relationship ended up bringing a lot of misery to every single person involved. The game is simply trying to make us understand that character worldview, but that doesn't mean that the devs agree with it.
Just keep that in mind and enjoy the game.
Story is good and quick, would recommend
