Awesome little game to just unwind with.
Art style is perfection
Banging soundtrack
Easy enough to jump into, difficult enough to master
Will this be your main game? Nah. Will it be great for quick romps? Absolutely
Pleasant graphics and, a nice sound.
Ideal for the fans of Rally. It's also excellent for those who want to spend not a lot of time and just chill, this is a game for.
As the SteamDeck user:
Everything is working fine, I'd say that Deck was created for such games to play with (especially offline mode, which means you really can play it whenever and wherever you want).
However, I must say that controls are hard. It is a whole new skill, particularly when you turn in manual transmission. And you need to learn them, but when you make it, it is just a joy to play.
I'm an avid sim racer with both track and rally but sometimes after a long day, I'd like to race but just don't have the energy to focus. All of you wheel jockies know exactly what I mean.
*enter art of rally
With great physics and car feel that is intuitive in nature, art of rally captures the essence of car handling on a gamepad perfectly, similar to the benchmark feel of the Forza Horizon series. With the quirky context of the alternate universe of Gr.B dominance, this indie title exemplifies the type of developers that deserve our hard earned money in an age of the death of AAA developers. On those select days of low energy but a need for speed, I can now rally & chill with pure enjoyment. Highly recommend for any racing fan!
A great little arcade rally game with stunning visuals and great soundtrack. Don't expect rally sim-level handling, but it's still really fun to drive. My only complaints (which are minor) is that 1) there's no first-person view and 2) one achievement requires completing 1000 stages.
Absolute legendary game on the Steamdeck. Simple, fast, fun, great visuals and excellent soundtrack. 100% recommend.
3시간쯤 하니까 게임 끊겨서 재접하니 괜찮아짐
굉장히 차분한 게임인데 배경음악이 요란함
배경보면서 힐링 하려고 해봤는데
게임 끊겨서 힐링 안됨
Great vibes and aesthetics, the ramp up in speed teaches you the best way to drive with time as well!
I just wish there was workshop support or something to keep the game going besides the small studio making new maps (WHICH ARE GREAT) I just think more people = more content and longer life
This is such a good synthwave album! It also comes with this nifty rally game to play while you listen.
Super relaxing, fun game to play on the couch. Beautiful art style. Good music!
Performance is really bad (on 3080). I like the game, but this is unacceptable. High refresh rate doesn't work, locking to 60 'works', but also constantly dips to 30FPS, distractingly bad pop in.
I really wanted to like this game but I just can't.
It has a bunch of small quality of life issues that'd be annoying in themselves but the main thing that kills it for me is the physics and driving dynamics.
Let's start with the smaller ones:
- If you go off course, you get a 5 sec. penalty and put back on the track. This is useful if you fly off into the forest and can't really come back, but is supremely annoying when I misjudge a corner and take it a bit too widely. I could absolutely make it, it's not cutting the corner, but the game still penalizes trying to be quick and making a slight mistake. (in a rally game :D )
- Trees go see-through if they get between the camera and the car. Sounds good, except it's not the whole tree, just a circle that let's you see the car. Unfortunately that's not particularly useful, because chances are you still can't see which way the road goes so you will likely either crash or lose time for slowing down. Trees are also prone to simply obstruct your view ahead.
- Buildings or terrain won't go see-through at all, so sharp corners where the road curves behind a house or a cliff, you can only hope that it goes like you either remember (if you have run that track before) or how you guess it does.
- Most roadside objects are non-destructible, meaning that on some maps, misjudging a turn even the slightest (looking at you Germany with those "tombstones" right next to the road's edge) you will at worst damage and get hung up on the obstacle, needing to reverse, loosing a lot of time for a tiny mistake or at best, damage but spin around so you mostly just lose speed. Also, the map in non-deformable which is probably a little too high of an expectation to be fair, but no snow-banks, mud, loose dirt etc, if the terrain looks bumpy it will make you car bounce like a ball.
- Complete lack of a navigator. Why? This is literally one of the most important staples of rally. Not to mention that it'd at least partially solve some of the issues above.
- No steering angle indicator, so I always have to guess which ways the tires are pointing and why the car is not actually travelling in the direction I'd like it to.
And now on to the driving:
First of all, with the default settings I almost refunded the game right away. It feels terrible. I gave it one more shot by turning everything down (not every assist can be turned off) and putting the transmission into manual with a clutch.
It improved the experience drastically but even like this it's leagues behind most arcade racers I've played.
- The front wheels recenter just as slow if not slower then turning. Or at least that's how it feels. This makes correcting small mistakes will almost always result in a much bigger mistake as you are trying to correct for an input you didn't give nor can cancel. This might have something to do with the limited slip diff logic too, as clutching in can somewhat improve on this, but even then it feels wrong and you will likely be fishtailing all over the place.
- It seems to me that if you slide out in too sharp of an angel you will loose essentially a 100% of your grip, which means that neither braking nor downshifting and getting on the gas will save you. This is (in my experience) not how physics work and once again the game feels like it's trying to punish me for trying to go as hard as I can and making a mistake which again is not exactly unheard-of in rally racing.
- Physics are just inconsistent. Breaking stops the car unreasonably fast, while sliding will loose you almost no momentum. Landing a jump slightly off-kilter can throw you car into a spin even if you landed with the clutch in. Low power cars will under-steer at low and over steer at high speed. Why? How? Some 4 wheel drive cars have pretty intuitive driving while others feel like they were untested on some surfaces. (also why no RWD in Group S?)
- Similar cars will drive drastically different. You mean to tell me, that an NA 3 rotor rotary makes less torque than a turbo inline 4? I know that rotaries are less torque-y, cause I happen to own one IRL, but not to this extent. Especially not when they make north of 600 horsepower. Meanwhile the aforementioned turbo i4s will have torque from down low, which, ok, this is an alternate timeline, maybe they have variable-geometry turbos or something, but then why not give the rotary variable length intake then to increase the torque.
Am I over-analyzing a simple little rally game?
I absolutely am.
Can you overcome it's issues, find a car you mesh with relatively well and learn how to drive it?
Sure.
But even if you get over the handling which really is quite an ask in a racing game, there is the myriad of QOL issues that coupled with the driving almost create a negative feedback loop.
The game is pretty, it has the vibes and seems to have been crafted with love full of amusing little easter-eggs, but man it's infuriating to play.
To say that this game is a sim would be incorrect. What it does, however, is boil down the rally driving experience to exactly what makes it, "it". The driving mechanics and physics FEEL real. As a person lucky enough to own a car that wouldn't be out of place in this game, and some fun places to drive it, this game captures the spirit of driving perfectly without any of the fat.
An absolute masterpiece. Ever since getting a steering wheel over a decade ago, you couldnt convince me to play racing games on controller again. But this game, not only made me consider it. It has me absolutely hooked, and my wheel collecting dust this past week. Well worth every penny. 10/10
1. Best 3-finger action I've ever had :D. The flow is amazing.
I instantly fell in love with it and bought it for me and 3 of my friends/family members. :)
2. Cheers to the team at funselektor for providing us with such a beautiful, and although simplistic for some, very intricate rendition of what driving a rally car must feel like, at least "vibration-wise" :D. All accompanied by glorious music and aesthetically pleasing visuals!
3. PLEASE GIVE US MULTIPLAYER !!!
This "arcade-ish" rally game really begs for a true multiplayer experience.
So far it has been fun and im going to finish this with my steamdeck. (played both pc and SD)
1) Performance could be better on SD
2) One of the most annoying things is when a rally game decides to "reset +5 seconds" for you. Definitely an option to consider FunSelektor! Let me actually select the fun.
A UI QoL would be to give an option the game thinks the player might want to reset but not a forced system. Feels bad when you hit a corner slighlty big but will be back shortly after. Kicks the fun out of the perfectionist.
Lastly, the "Yaaay" Kids sound effect is a bit much for me after winning stages (;
cool game all together!
iz fun, cute art style, cool gam, chill but funny at times, pls play
Surprisingly vibrant in the sense that the controls need some getting used to especially because each car handles in a different way, meaning a lot of time is spent on getting accustomed to the cars themselves. Once you do, it's a lot of fun! Graphics might look a bit odd at first, but its in line with the overall vibe of the game that is not trying to be too serious about itself. Definitely a good and fun way to spend your time if you want a break from the more realistic stuff. There's still plenty of realism in the sense of handling and the way cars feel, but overall its less of a grind and definitely a fun experience all around. Good value for money!
Very fun game, the simple retro-style low-poly graphics with popping colours remind me of older mobile games in a sense. But it's also very difficult and hard to get the hang of. It's a beautiful, stylistically-unique game with great driving. Music's pretty dang good too!
After a few hours I can confidently say that Art of Rally is one of the best racers I have played in years.
I’ve logged quite a few hours in the Dirt series and many other more realism focused rally games, and while I thoroughly enjoy the technicality and intensity of those titles, I am playing them for the challenge. Art of Rally on the other hand is pure fun.
At first I was a bit frustrated to not have an in car view as it’s how I typically play, but after a few minutes and finally stringing a few corners together, childhood memories of Mario Kart and the old Sega Rally series brought it all back and I’ve loved every minute since.
it's a great pick-up-and-play game that's both casual & challenging. As a rally fan, they have every car you could really want (personal favorites: Lancia 037, Lancia Delta, Renault 5 Turbo, Cozzie). The driving dynamics are surprisingly good. Different terrain & weather conditions affect your traction. AWD vs RWD, naturally aspirated vs turbo charged, you can actually feel the difference car-to-car if you're playing attention. As someone with limited time, this really scratches the itch I have for rally racing sims without the time commitment and practice games like DIRT RALLY & WRC require.
retro arcade game with the fewest and least complicated controls i have ever played. Extreme learning curve and incredible accuracy to each vehicle and stage/rally. just wish i had more time in my day to play it.
A lovely Simcade title about drifting around corners and reliving the various eras of rally racing. It has a good-natured, sardonic sense of humor and a brilliant sense of style which pair perfectly with a satisfying and varied driving system. Cars feel varied and range from turbocharged refrigerators which resist oversteer to hyperactive chihuahuas on steroids, as likely to net you a stage win as it is to achieve lift and helicopter over the nearest hill. That is a compliment.
This game manages to fill a niche of intense, engaging moment to moment racing surrounded by relaxing ambiance and a non-demanding progression system, highlighting the vibe of the rally racing scene over the decades. It rewards skill and technical knowledge, but provides variable difficulty to accommodate any skill level. For the price, I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a racing game between NFS and Forza in depth
I love the art style, I love the music, but the car handling is just plain frustrating for me. I tried playing with the assists all the way off, all the way on, and everything in between. I have hundreds of hours in all types of racing games and I love them, but this is not one I recommend. In a game about rally racing you are actively punished for drifting. There is zero control when you drift, even driving a slight curve is challenging, but not in a good way. Just feels clumsy. Based on the videos and screenshots of the game you would think it was an arcadey drifting game, but unfortunately has handling more akin to something like cruising USA... except instead of just bouncing off the walls, if you go off the track thats a restart for you buddy.
This game has very good art direction. I love it. Besides that it's an amazing racing game. It's not very realistic, but it doesn't have to be. You have a few options to choose from when playing games. You have free roam, campaign and practice. The game has a wide selection of maps and locations (Japan, Australia, Norway, Finland, ...) as well as a wide selection of cars ranging from group 2 and all the way to the fantastic group a. The game is really enjoyable and I return to it every few months. It's a very good game. The only bad thing I can really say about the game is that it's incredibly badly optimised for some reason.
Impossible to play with a controller, and the game does not accept steering wheel as input.
There is an authenticity to this driving game that is best illustrated by the fact that I drive far better with all the assists turned off, on a desert road, while listening to The Doors*.
A game that rewards engaging with... that... part of yourself...
*The Doors music not included in-game.
I think Art of Rally may be one of the most unobtrusive yet deeply rewarding racing games out there.
In the beginning, you appreciate the style, in the middle you appreciate the nuance and detail, and in the end you appreciate the entirety.
If you're not feeling it, I encourage you to try tweaking some settings (there are more 'drive' settings in the advanced controls panel), and practice in free roam with your favorite group, because if nothing else the game is a vibe.
Deceptively challenging driving physics for its simplistic packaging. Clearly made by true fans of rally racing.
The art style is beautiful, the driving is hard but rewarding to master, the track selection is great and even the open world maps collectibles are fun to gather. Great game and an enjoyable challenge to 100%
Great fun, with a very appealing visual style, in nice small packages, perfect for killing time.
difficult but fun once you understand mechanics
stunning game, the game play is challenging to get a handle on but genuinely satisfying to learn. the art style in-game does not disappoint and there are these lovely bits of humour sprinkled throughout the game which gives it a great personality. 9/10: don't pass it up if you find it on sale
I'll start off by saying that I really like this game. It is made with such love and care, the graphics are lovely, the UI is simple and easy to navigate and the game-design is excellent. I love the little bobble crowd that runs in front of you and despite the simplistic graphics, the locations are detailed and believable.
However, the game does have some areas that could use work.
The controls aren't TERRIBLE, but they certainly are strange. This game is not even close to being a sim and appeals to a relaxed enjoyment of rally, but the controls make it very difficult to relax and enjoy the game. The grip is inconsistent and the handling just feels off. It would be great to have some control over the inputs.
The camera angle also just doesn't do it for me. I get that it provides a nice wide view of the environment and the road ahead, but I long for a closer, lower view.
I also don't know if it's just me, but rally is all about being able to ride the line between clean precision and flat out madness, and this is made possible by the pace notes for each stage. Somehow, this just doesn't feel like rally without them.
Apart from these minor quibbles, this is a really enjoyable game and I look forward to putting in plenty more hours into it.
Good game but controls are horrible, can play that much. Verry unpredictable car with a controler... I play beamNG without any problem with the same controler.
Maybe I should try keyboard or wheel setup but it not the way I want to play this game.
I've just spent 1 hour randomly spinning and twinking again and again configs to get a good feelings. Wheels just don't turn at all or randomly turning sharp in straight line. The best that I can do is without any assist but it needs a lot of anticipation (because wheels turn slowly) and it is not fun...
Maybe one day I will find good config for this game and enjoy it
amazing game
good looks
nice sounding cars
crowd to crash into
satisfying driving experience as a result of difficulty
nice variety of cars with fun descriptions
crowd to crash into
This game is an absolute Gem, especially when you grab at the sale price of $10 USD.
The art style is very vibrant and moody depending on the scenes and works well all across the maps that are in the game.
Handling between the different cars is very present as well. Some seem like you absolutely need the sensitivity maxed out for your gamepad (at least I did) to drive properly but the physics on everything is a very good simcade. It's so close while still being easy enough on a console controller.
The only thing I found that isn't at least somewhat modeled is car pitch manipulation in-flight with the throttle and brake. That's about the only thing missing that I would say should be added.
Master difficulty is very tough. I'm really pushing the boundaries to get stage wins but just erroring slightly on a cautious side typically hangs me in for -10s wins in a four stage rally.
Damage model is a bit too forgiving. Max damage severity is still not very severe as I can plow into a guard rail engine first and only have a click or two of radiator damage.
I love playing rally games when I have my rig all set up but those days are coming few and far between now. This game scratches that itch for me and I can take it on my laptop and pad anywhere I travel to get it.
I truly wish I bought this game sooner and that's my only gripe. Well done to the devs! This is the first game in a long time that I feel like I robbed you getting such a great title for a steal of a price. I'll have to check out the other games when I get the chance.
great graphics, runs well on mac. fun game to pass time, just remember to tweak the settings to your personalization. the auto countersteer is pretty high
I hit the thumbs up because it is a fun little time waster but as of late the leadboards, weekly, daily events don't show up anymore so the replay value is gone. Still fun to go through the career mode but if your looking for replay value unless they fix this pass on it.
IT HAS AN APE. Took me 8 hours of grinding to get the piaggio ape (called little monkey ingame). it hadles like a pos but its pretty fun to drive. Game has some other nice cars like a КАМАЗ, lada samara, logging truck and a ton of vans. very fun
Fun art style and responsive driving controls. Also love the setting the game takes place during the rise of group B rally racing. Banger of a soundtrack as well. Great game to just sit down and vibe while tearing down back country roads.
tl;dr
Good looking
Good campaign/gameplay
Bad performance
Bad driving
Even though I like it, had to give a negative review for this game because of the stuttering, there was a looootttt of stuttering!
The fix is: Enable low latency mode in your graphics card driver. Quite counterintuitive because the low latency mode usually causes bad framepacing/stuttering, but in this case it was the opposite. Definitely a bug.
There should also be deadzone and linearity options for the analog stick. My car kept steering left even on a new hall effect joystick. It also was very sensitive. Solved it by tuning via steam input,
I bought this game at a discount; it would have been worth full price. It proves graphics do not have to be detailed to be pretty, and that gameplay does not require official licensing. The main campaign is well-tuned for both length and progression. The postgame has another 1,000 records to chase if you are so inclined. AAA games struggle to have that much replay value. Best game I bought this year.
Basically the opposite of what you would expect out of an arcade rally experience, rather than being inside the car, you're far above it. Rather than eurodance and intense duels it's meditative solo racing. You get better at about the same pace as the cars get faster so by the end you can drive cars that felt uncontrollable at the start. If you liked their previous game, Absolute Drift, you will very likely like this one, it has a very similar vibe.
This is a lovely rally game. It is not a hardcore realistic rally experience. It is a cozzy, enjoyable, more casual rally experience. I have played realistic rally games like Dirt rally, and although I liked it, I found the experience pretty difficult and exhausting. Here the driving is enjoyable. You can adjust the difficulty to keep you in line, but also leave yourself time to take in the scenery.
Looking up some negative reviews, I believe some people do not appreciate this game because not being realistic enough like other rally games. I think it's good that this game is not too realistic, because it allows him to be a low level entry for all the people who want to try rally games for the first time.
I probably don't have a chance with her, but i have a chance at getting pretty good at this game👍
This is possibly one of the best rally games iv ever played. the art style is beautiful. The cars drive amazingly and I 100% recomend this game.
Pretty fun arcade game with all the assists turned on. Horrible rally game with all the assists turned off
If real world rally cars behaved the way they do in this game (with assists turned off), rally would have been outlawed the second it was invented. People keep talking about the physics, which are decent enough for an arcade game, but if you play with every assist at 0%, the control scheme and some (most?) car behavior is harebrained - there is no way for you to just steer. Your only options are to understeer or oversteer and then correct, which more often than not will lead you into the bushes and a penalty
As a proper rally game, I cannot recommend this. If you do end up spending money on it, do yourself a favor and treat it like an arcade game and turn on all the assists. It's actually fun to play if you do that
Beautiful and a pretty fun historical rally sim(arcade)
Great gameplay and smooth top view vehicle game.
Beautiful graphic. Extensive game mode. Very addictive. Highly recommended to all racing fans, especially rally lover.
