Firstly, for proper experience, play the games "in order". They are not directly related plotwise, but I don't think the overall experience works quite well if you play A STRANGER COMES CALLING second.
Now, given the title you wouldn't be entirely wrong in believing this to be a one joke experience, as indeed much of the experience boils down to just that: Steve has severe social anxiety and simple situations become needlessly complicated because of this. The first game in particular is a pseudo-RPG in how your objective is to try to find a way to calm Steve down enough for an eventual "stat check". Obviously along the way you enjoy all the ways in which you can fail, but this is how the gameplay loop is justified. There's a minor "wholesome game" undertone to how some of the mini-scenarios are played out, but this one's still at its core a comedy.
Then comes DON'T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN, and things change. While there's still some Henry Stickam-esque "see all the funny ways in which you can fail" aspect, this time the plot is actually fully linear and more in line with a visual novel. And then... I won't spoil it (any more than the intrinsic "well, there's a twist" spoiler), but the whole thing becomes more than just a simple silly comedy. I am not sure if this change will be entirely welcome by everyone playing, but in my experience it did manage to elevate the experience.
This quirky little FMV narrative game has no right to be as awesome and engaging as it is.
Play with friends if you can. We're still talking about it the day after.

Really liked the game and pretty funny too. Hard to say something without spoiling it.

Mir gefällt das Spiel sehr und war ziemlich lustig auch. Schwer etwas zu sagen ohne das Gameplay zu Spoilern.
This is the niche indie art house film of computer games. It's low budget, creative, weird, self-aware, awkward, heartfelt and if you've ever gone out of your way to find and support games (and developers) for no other reason than to thumb your nose at the AAA publishing houses and reward people who just want to build their own bizarre passion projects then add this one to the list, especially if it's on sale. If it was a film, it would only get screened at a couple of really small independent cinemas that only those in the know are even aware of because the Normals won't get it. :D
i bought it for 99 cents and had to return it. it really should be free. i like fmv's and creativity. so for even making it i give gratitude. the scenes are in black and white and are not a bad capture, but i could not see my self playing more than 5 mins of it than getting bored.
i do like the steve guy and his dog shirt + using the gameboy as a phone.
but i can not recommend the purchase
The best game I've ever had the honor of playing. Cannot recommend enough. I cry everytime.
It is not really a game; it is an interactive short story. Full-motion video, sadness, and humor. Explores anxiety disorder - I am not a doctor. It is just not for me - I want to play and solve puzzles.
Very enjoyable, I was smiling and laughing the whole time in both games!
I especially liked that (potential spoilers for the game) [spoiler]feeling of creating fun with all the ordinary objects around you in the second game, it kind of brought back a similar feeling from my early childhood. [\spoiler]
While I appreciate what the creator is trying to do here, it's not my cup of tea. There's not a lot of nuance or depth. It just drives the point home with the force of a semi truck.
And for something so short, the way to succeed can still be confusing. I never really connected to the protagonist though, so when I failed it felt like it didn't matter.
There are a couple legitimately funny moments, but I don't think it's worth going through everything else just to experience them.
This was an interesting concept - it's like an interactive silent film. I don't think I'd quite call this a game, so if that's what you're looking for you might want to look somewhere else. With that out of the way, however, I found it had memorable moments and made me laugh out loud at least once, so that's pretty good. I definitely found the commentary on anxiety relatable and would recommend this game to anyone looking for that kind of subject matter.
This is the funnest and funniest game I have played in such a long time I can't believe how hard I laughed playing this it was awesome seriously you guys have to do another FMV with this dude
Creative, charming, and introspective. They say you can't judge a person before walking a mile in their shoes, and The Awkward Steve Duology puts you in Steve's shoes, forcing you to confront the world from his perspective.
Bought game on sale on a splurge. Played game. Never related so much to a game as much as game. Enjoyed game.
In all seriousness though, The Awkward Steve Duology gives a comical, yet simplistic, realistic, dumbed down version of what anxiety feels like to people who literally cannot comprehend what the heck it's like to live with anxiety every day in a short span of time. I have anxiety and this FMV object d'art gave me good laughs.
If you're just planning on playing the two "games" within this d'art, it'll take you like 15-30 minutes at max each. If, for some reason, you're looking to get acheivements like me, it'll take you a lot less than the time I have logged in if you just power through all the options.
10/10 across all boards. I demand more games from Oh, a Rock! Studios right now.
I'm so glad I stumbled across this game. It's simple and short, but genuinely entertaining. The Awkward Steve Duology is actually two short games, where you play as Steve, who suffers from Social Anxiety.
The games are FMV games, that is Full Motion Video, or to put it more plainly, actual real life video clips. You're given options like OPEN THE DOOR or HIDE UNDER THE TABLE and then you pick one and a short video plays. So, pretty basic. I think what makes this game stand out is the quality of the writing. It's funny, and also relatable. The first adventure is about a stranger knocking on your door, and trying to reduce your anxiety enough to actually answer it. The second is about your housemate hosting a party and being too nervous to leave the bathroom.
So, would I recommend? Yes. I don't think you even necessarily have to be into weird little indie games to give this one a shot. But it'd help. In any case, I give this 3.5/5 stars.
The first part was goofy and fun, while also touching on the issue of severe anxiety, but portrayed in a that ca make you laugh.
The second part was goofy and fun, while also sucker punching you in the face and making you cry.
It definitely isn't a game for everyone, but if you like nonsensical humor and/or having your emotions do a 180, this game might be for you.
One of the best impulse buys in a while.
The concept of The Awkward Steve Duology is so ridiculously simple, I was actually shocked by how little there is to it. This two-part FMV adventure game is an absurd little look in the life of someone who seems cripplingly awkward. The player follows the titular Awkward Steve as he is thrust into two anxiety-triggering situations: answering the door and being stuck in a bathroom during a party.
The first segment is pretty hilarious, and trust me, I wanted to get in the damn box (spoilers). The second one continues the humour and general oddness, but with a far more satisfying story. If you don't feel something by the end of it, you're a heartless bastard.
Just kidding.
But no, seriously. This is great. I loved this way more than I should have. I related to it all too well, and I can't relate to anything. I applaud thee, Paul Franzen.
clap clap clap
I enjoyed this little one man project, a lovable main character who strangely enough I connected with. Not to mention I laughed out loud at many points during the short journey the game took me on. Not often a game can do that to me.
The Awkward Steve Duology is a series about introversion taken to its logical extreme. It's often really funny, though a lot of it also hits pretty close to home (at least for me). I mean, who hasn't locked themselves in their room and pretended not to be there while your roomate throws a party? Right? ...right?? T_T
If you like weird, funny FMV choose-your-own-adventure games, or if you're an introvert, you'll probably enjoy this.
It isn’t easy to explain “THE AWKWARD STEVE DUOLOGY”. But I will bravely state that it manages to pull off a deceptively-unique experience that shines a spotlight on the thought-process of an awkward person with anxiety.
This game captures the humor and turmoil of a seemingly mundane task as an anxious person might see it.
The humorous distractions peppered throughout the experience mirrors the real-world mental exercises overthinkers go through to avoid that which brings them fear, no matter how ridiculous. It blurs the lines between creativity, humor, and fear, which is something every awkward person can relate to.
The artistic license used in “Steve’s” interactions with everyday items helps to reinforce how silly the overarching fear may actually be. At the end of the day, I don’t believe this truth is lost on Steve.
The final product is an experience that may hit too close to home for some.
10 out of 10 “hand” soaps
Incredible touches of humanity, humor, and even some wicked good camera angles. It hits close to home in a delightfully surrealistic, yet still incredibly genuine, way. We are all Steve.
