open world adventure/puzzle game with city building elements. relies too much on grinding and doesn't have enough going on in the world to be substantive. get on HEAVY sale if you're interested.
It's not a bad game. I like the way you get to both design a small village but also get to explore the world. I love that you can't fail. However progression in this game is very rigid, by a number of factors, by the ressource you need to progress, exploration itself, how you unlock new buildings and how you expand your settlements border. It's not the things the game asks you to do as much as it just feels very resticted playing through it,
5/10
The good:
The puzzles are great and the best part of the game. I had to turn easy mode on for several of the timed ones which didn't detract from the mechanics or fun of solving them.
The hidden areas in the game you find wandering around are great to solve.
The story is great and I loved the in game lore.
I loved the NPCs, their lore, their quests, and names matching vocation.
The Archives were hands down my favorite level and so much fun while slightly creepy and surreal to play through.
You find plenty of teleport scrolls to get around and special items to finish fetch quests solving ruin puzzles.
I got the game on sale.
The bad:
The Halfling's wand kept leading me to already opened chests.
Every time I reloaded the game, when I picked up a spice, quartz, black powder, potion, or other special item you had to read the description cut scene screen.
The in game map doesn't feature enough landmarks or location of quest givers.
You can only put one personal map marker on the map at a time.
I kept getting soft locked on trees, walls, and logs. I commonly had to reload getting the Dwarf stuck between walls and trees or trees and cliffs or trees and everything else.
The locations of areas you need to progress to are vague and Wat stops giving you location hints after The Archives.
The map markers aren't precise. Finding Friendship stones or puzzles hidden behind trees or at the edges of map regions was often difficult.
I had to have 3 cats following me to spot missing sprites and it took way too long to find all 160.
The way to progress isn't often clear and I had to run along boundaries to find gates with switches or buttons not obviously connected to opening a new area.
It takes forever to grind for resources and often I would be maxed out when entering Trials having failed to figure out a missing building combo I needed so the loot was worthless.
It took me a while to figure out you could talk to town citizens who give you the blueprints for the animal shelter expansion.
What I wish would be improved:
Having the Halfling wand detect sprites. The wand kept leading me to old opened chests too.
Prior to cutscenes you can still interact with objects resulting in a hard lock when defeating the Archives as I mistakenly believed the last teleport was the exit and ended up with Gloria stuck outside the Archives and my other two characters in the level with no ability to pull up menus or tab out of the game.
The citizens or mayor could offer you tips on what buildings to combine to get blueprints.
Resources should be visible on the map with a pet at least as I spent a significant portion of my play through grinding to get enough resources to build my town.
The ability to move placed structures in town without having to destroy and rebuild them. My town has no rhyme or reason and looks super ugly.
More contrast on harvest-able resources. I missed several switch hiding leaf piles or would take a swing at a rock only to discover it couldn't me mined.
The beacon for my Town was hard to see and not useful at all.
I kept running out of explosives trying to blow up rock features mistakenly believing free standing ones might have caves in them.
Sprint ability for all characters or better speed boosting pets. I hated running around with the Dwarf mining resources even with two jackalopes, a white rabbit, and a couple direwolfs.
The ability to make warehouses into a vault to hold even more resources.
Getting stuck in terrain features.
