The Rusty Lake Crew always dishes out loads of macabre fun. Absolutely love it.

Simple gameplay controls but a compelling storyline and complex clues (not impossible to figure out but challenging enough to be interesting).

This game is an integral part of the Rusty Lake franchise, if you like any of the other games you're sure to like this one too. I've played the games a little out of order but I was very impressed with the overarching story of the family. Plus the foreshadowing for the other games in the series is next level. This is probably my favorite so far, tied with Samsara room.

“Roots” is one of the games in the Rusty Lake series, a 2D point&click adventure expanding on the legend about the mysterious lake. This particular game follows the history of the Vanderboom family that is fatefully intertwined with the lake, and the pursuit for the elixir of life that is supposed to grant immortality to its imbiber. Game is split into smaller episodes arranged in a “family tree”, which focus on individual members of the family and important milestones, and your task will be to solve puzzles in each episode to push the story forward. Technically the game looks a lot like its “Rusty Lake Hotel” predecessor, with simple colored drawings and subtle, yet suggestive music. It’s also available at a good price and it’s an integral part of Rusty Lake franchise, so if you have played and liked any of the others, be sure to get this game too.

The game consists of little stages with limited options on what to do, making it easy to know what you're supposed to do next, while still remaining challenging on some parts. It goes deeper into the story of the characters of Rusty Lake, so if anyone likes the lore - it's the perfect game for it. As always, the art style is great, it really comes off as a painting.

This is my favorite Rusty Lake game and the one you should play first if you haven't explored the Rusty Lake universe before.

It introduces you to the Rusty Lake universe and its unique style, everything from the puzzle mechanics to the eerie atmosphere, in an organic way. I love how they create immersion through subtle visual and audio elements, with so little text. Most things are simply implied.

They’ve done a great job with the puzzles. There are easy, medium, and really hard ones, but the pacing is perfect, so you won’t feel stuck for long. There will always be puzzles you can solve relatively quickly in between, and the variety keeps things interesting.

Roots is a game made up of many smaller games, each one a distinct puzzle, yet all woven together into the overarching story. The tree unfolds into different levels, some big, some small, but everything is connected to the lore. Rusty Lake was probably my introduction to horror, and although some puzzles are a bit gross... the design itself isn’t gory. It’s very simple, so it’s not too unsettling. What makes it eerie is the immersion and the realization of what you sometimes have to do, rather than anything overly graphic. But in the end, it’s just a game. :P

I have all the Rusty Lake games on all platforms. :D I wish they made more games in the Roots style!

This builds very nicely on Rusty Lake Hotel so I will focus primarily on where it differs.
Pros: more variety to locations and puzzles. Better paced. More emotionally engaging storyline. The drag mechanic makes for more interesting and interactive puzzles. Helps explain Rusty Lake Hotel. Cons: there are times where you won't know exactly what happens when you click the mouse on a thing and sometimes it'll do something you didn't expect slowing down your progress.

Honestly, the best Rusty Lake game I've played so far! The puzzles are just hard enough to keep you engaged, and the story is good. Definitely a big like from me :)

Great game, probably the best in the series. Great mysterious story feeling lynchian in more ways than one. Beautiful design, makes you feel clever when you finally figure out a puzzle you've been stuck on for a while.
Also, more replayable than I'd thought, there is so many small details than I forgot the solution to a lot of these while playing it back.

This sequel was definitely a step up from the previous one. Tougher puzzles (in a good way), and a nice tale of tragedy. Worth playing.

Great puzzle game, haven't found a match for any of the Rusty Lake franchise yet. I recommend playing the games in order, this way the story will make more sense.

Great Rusty Lake game, spanning multiple smaller screens and timelines. It still has vague, dark and mysterious story but it's easier to follow than other entries of this franchise.

A much more streamlined and intuitive experience compared to Cube Escape and Rusty Lake: Hotel! I would say the puzzles here are easier to understand but still as satisfying to complete. The only tricky ones I would say are the ones towards the end, trying to get all the family secrets and trying to understand the recipes for the elixir. Takes a lot of trial and error if you're not using any guides at all. Overall, pleasant and fulfilling experience!

This does NOT make a good stand-alone puzzle game. This game DOES however serve as the most important installment in the Rusty Lake series.
If you're just looking for a quick one-and-done point and click puzzle game, there are much better options. However for those willing to invest a few dozen hours following lore, cross-referencing notes, and experiencing the entire Rusty Lake series this game, and the others in the franchise, are absolute gems.

The puzzles were a bit easy in my opinion, but the story was quite engaging ((I HATE ALBERT, HE WAS SCARY AF))

My most favourite puzzles were the emblems finding parts. It was so fun jumping around memories trying to figure out where it was hidden. I really love that.

My least favourite one would be the alchemy at the very end of the game. It was just the part that required good memory and fu*k-around-and-find-out way of thinking. And I am not quite good with it, I had to look it up for some recipes ;-;

Overall, very good experience and very enjoying. S-tier for me comparing with other games in the series.
