Seems to be abandoned at this points. No news or updates in over a year.
Looks gorgeous with some fantastic music and game world to explore but the movement controls, user interface are incredibly clumsy making moving/manipulating things very frustrating to use killing any sense of natural movement and immersion.
This ones full of potential. The bits that are developed look promising, but the bugs got the better of me. 5+ hours in and can't progress due to bugs. Real shame as the bits that are done so far look great. However I will revise my rating when there's a bit more meat on the bones and some of those game breaking bugs are ironed out.
This game is currently Early Access. As such there are a lot of bugs and a few dead end quests that I have discovered. Having said that, considering this is a solo core developer project, this is off to a good start. Arakion reminds me a lot of Grimrock. Some of the controls are the same but the User Interface is vastly different. It took me a few hours to get used to it.
I got about 7 hours in before I ran into what I think is the end of what has been developed so far. So, for now at least, I will set the game aside and come back in a few months after an update and continue my review.
Minigames, check. Puzzles, in full force. Crafting and hunger too. An immersive adventure of intoxicating fantasy elements with the respect and adoration of blobbers from gaming lore. Turnbased or real time grid movement and combat, this one man DEV has made quite a peculiar yet familiar little gem.
While not complete, Arakion Book One is still playable and one can see the ambition and ideas behind all that is unfinished. But what is good about what is there STILL does not convey a project with direction, because it is difficult to estimate a serious connotation of execution from my perspective. Just hopping on the wagon now, I have seen earlier builds and read previous reviews and they don't appear to be congruent to what is the latest build now, which is all fine and alright, it being early access, but it is a trying time to determine what is under construction and what is permanent even with the cryptic content of certain puzzles or mechanics.
It is a wonderful little world, so far, and many brilliant views of sentimental RPG qualities from yesteryear. The game is grid based although could very well improve by "freeing" the movement similar to Bards Tale IV has done, simply put, I am not quite sure how much the DEV is standing firmly on the current environment, as it's points of interest are sometimes not entirely centered to the players viewpoint ie. they fall between the center of 2 grids.
It happens enough to notice.
Due to the independent nature, the game is missing so much more of the finesse that usually punctuates the menus and text of similar games detailing such wondrous looking worlds. A contrivance to me personally, as the game deserves that added touch and I know and hope that the DEV has it within to make that special atmospheric flair that would embellish significantly, not looking for Disney quality but merely bells and whistles along the lines of on screen notifications, item descriptions, battle log, menu sounds, ease of access etc. Yes I want to see this game come to fruition and this would most likely come near the end of development.
It is very cool and sophisticated , this pays homage to my favorite genre. This is one to watch and worth it as is now but know that it is a work in progress that could only improve and surprise!
Seems an interesting combination of game types and has a different and pleasant graphics style. Needs a real tutorial and some indication of objects that can be manipulated. Right now I found fighting the interface and the errors in the current tutorial too frustrating to have fun. Probably will be a good game with a little more work.
This game is not ready for early access. The controls for combat work only intermittently and the interface is poorly designed. There is no way to view what items are equipped or tell which things can be harvested and which cannot. Creatures appear to be able to attack diagonally or melee attack from a distance. In short very few of the basic game functions work as they should.
A diamond in the rough with a beta feel
(I have mainly played development builds of Arakion so my time played does not reflect my actual time played)
Short Form
Likes? The foundation is great, the world feels alive, there is a good amount of content and there is a lot coming down the pipeline. I think this game will be amazing when finished.
Dislikes? No turn based. This is my gripe, and it's a biggie. I want that Might and Magic feel that was promised. However, the developers have promised turn-based in August and there is a video on Discord showing it off so it's clearly working.
What to like?
There is a lot to like about Arakion. Party based blobber? Check. New stuff like crafting and world building? Check. Smooth controls and gameplay? Check. It's all wrapped up in a pretty bow. I'm excited for future updates, especially the turn based mechanics coming soon!
Honestly, there really is a lot of depth in Arakion. There is crafting, alchemy, town building, traits, unique races, unique world and more. Clearly, this was a craft of love but there is a lot of work left to be done and that will certainly turn off some potential players.
What to dislike?
No turn based and combat. For me these are intertwined, I dislike the combat because I want turn based. As stated above Discord shows turn based working so it should be in playable soon. Also, there are areas in the world that feel incomplete, however this may be more due to it being Early Access than anything so I don't think you should shave points for that.
Final first impression?
Get this game on sale if you like the genre. Hold off on playing it while you wrap up everything else in your catalog then dive in once it's further along or out of early access. The reality is this game probably has another year of development left so there is no rush. It's a diamond in the rough with a beta feel.
Arakion is still in early access, but it has real potential.
While the concepts of every gridder are respected and pleasing for the fans of the genre, it is in its uniqueness that Arakion wins; there is so much more here than in the average grid based RPG, that it is hard to summarize it all in a review.
The world is stunningly beautiful, there is love in every detail, trees and floating islands and puzzles; the characters are aesthetically appealing, with well thought backgrounds and different birthplaces for every different race; world-building and crafting are fun and a very nice introduction in the genre; even the ideas behind the NPC are new and refreshing.
There is still work to do, but “refreshing” is the right word to define Arakion: it is a breath of fresh air in the modern video game industry.
This is even more astonishing if you consider that this is a one-man team product!
Thumbs up for this little gem.
Dive in and become “Venturers”!
I'm unable to play the game on linux due to a party creation bug relating to race selection not working/being recognized. I recognise that it's early access but I payed for this game and cannot play it at all and it's been this way a long time. So until this changes I can't recommend the game for linux users. I'll update my review if/when this changes.
Developer is very helpful working on the issues and will hopefully be able to resolve them.
Interesting but awkward battle system.
Honestly I'm really enjoying the game, its difficult on legend/ironman mode. Loving the crafting, but the stamina in combat kinda irritates me, feels like I spend more time dancing so I dont get beaten to death, while i'm waiting for my stamina to regen. Then I lose out on the bonus xp for moving, at least im guessing thats what the multiplier bar is when you are in combat. The game is amazing in so many ways, but when I keep falling through the ground and either dying or getting stuck, then having to use Mr.Maker, and sac 30% of my shards. it's pissing me off. If you can get by falling and losing shards at random, or having the permanent debuff that you called upon Mr.Maker. Then buy this, you won't regret it. If not, wait till its out of early access.
EDIT: I initially recommended this due to reason mentioned bellow as I thought it had great potential if developed well. However after almost 4 years it is still in early access, with very little improvmnents and just with more buggy and not fully engaging content that by the time this game is fully finished will be completely out of date to the constantly evolving gaming standards.
Buy on sale if you are fan of a genre or don't buy at all.
Closest thing i could find to "Legend of Grimrock". If you liked that you're gonna love this game too.
Still needs some time to develop, but once it's finished it should be great.
First of all, let me start by saying that I'm a fan of grid-based dungeon crawlers, and I buy/play all of them when they're released. So it's going to be hard for me not to recommend this game :)
Arakion is in a weird spot. It has tons of potential for a long, epic adventure. The EA is a quarter of the full game and there's already more in that than in entire full games in the same genre. During my dozen of hours of adventuring, I've been to a dozen non-linear open-world areas ( centered around a hub in which you have some basic base-building and crafting elements ) and half a dozen dungeons. The dungeons look and feel nice, with some good dynamic lighting and shadowing effects, tons of traps, pitholes, pressure plates and the usual. The environment can be used against enemies. The puzzles have a deja-vu feeling, especially if you've played other games in the genre, but there's a good balance of basic and challenging puzzles, combined with a couple "boss" fights in locked areas.
The open-world "exterior" areas however do not work as well for me. They're all set on small little maze-like islands connected by wood bridges, but they all feel the same and the lack of a coherent layout works against them. The lack of variety in monsters does not help, but the developer is working on adding more monsters in upcoming patches. Overall I found the exterior areas to be boring, but the dungeons make up for them. I also like the non-linear nature of the game ( except in the "tutorial" areas, in the first 2 hours of the game, which are completely linear ). It's a great feeling to explore various islands, enter some dungeons, leave them for later while doing other areas in a different ordre. Blocking on a puzzle ? Bored by an island ? Go in another area, until you can back for more later !
There's very little "classic" loot in that game, besides some crafting reagents, potions and shards. Actual gear and equipment for your party of 3 characters ( plus some NPCs that can join you, but they only act as an icon and some stats bonuses for your team ) is improved through crafting. You first need to get access to the forge - until then you'll be walking almost naked - and find "recipes" for crafting, by observing areas or items in the game world with a virtual digital camera. This is a great and refreshing concept in the genre, but I find the lack of normal loot less appealing. Dungeons kind of feel empty to me, so you can forget about the excitement of finding a pile of treasures and items at the end of a hard dungeon. I would have preferred a combination of the old "hand-crafted loot" and this new crafting system, for the best of both worlds.
Combat so far has been pretty basic. The developer is still working on improving this side of the game, to avoid two-steps dancing as in Grimrock. Due to the lack of loot and limited access to crafting, and lack of diversity of abilities in character progression, the combat currently does not offer much tactical depth or interest. You'll be smashing attack buttons as fast as possible until cooldowns are over, all while moving around trying to dodge enemy attacks. I haven't seen any magic in this game so far, and I don't know enough about the game/lore to know if there even is magic available in the first place.
The EA is in a pretty good state, stability and bugs wise. It's not perfect, but it's definitely playable; I haven't had any crashes or framerate issues ( maybe some slight slowdowns in some busy areas ). Some text descriptions are missing or not clear, but can easily be fixes at a later stage.
In summary: the game isn't perfect and there are some design aspects of it which I did not enjoy (yet); however the game has been growing on me ( the first 4 hours are easily the weak part ) and I'm excited at all the new content that will be available in the rest of the game at release. If it's anything like the EA, the game will have a massive amounts of content at release ( many times more than other games in the genre ) and if the developer can keep areas non linear and address the boring first few hours, I think it will be appealing to a lot of players.
The game is a nice first person dungeon crawler that went old school, unfortunatly it seems like it is a little early for the game, there really wasn't glitches, the movent for that type of game was very slow and it just felt like the game dragged on. After about 15 minutes I was already bored and still didn't really know what was going on in the game. The sceneray is nice and the soundtrack was calming but felt like everything sounded the same. Combat was horibble and the crafting seemed boring as well. The game probably just isn't my cup of tea but I would definitly wait until it goes on a big sale before you purchase this game. The game was bland and boring 4/10
Still beginning stages in some places, but the amount of content already here is amazing. The crafting system is something I've never seen in a game before, and it's incredibly fun to discover new things to make. Combat is challenging but not impossible and being able to tell if something is close to dead is great. The leveling system is really great, reminds me of Path of Exile a little bit. Really excited to see how this grows.
