fun! good multiplayer for 1-2 friends
Simple to pick up, but very difficult. Addictive and fun, even if the difficulty spike is rough.
Great mechanics and replayability.
For The King is a fun game to pick up with your friends. The charming graphics and numerous build-customizations provide a satisfying gameplay experience during all of your runs to guarantee for a decent replayability.
The game especially emphasizes difficult encounters and an environment of time pressure which motivates the player(s) to plan every move with caution and is therefore most of the time not a cozy and relaxing game but a challenging and serious one.
However the game still allows you to plan your own steps to achieve your goals which is usually increasing level to advance in the story.
From my experience the game heavily relies on it's consumable items especially in later stages which brings me to the only thing I have to criticize about the game. There is only one way of healing yourself or your allies spite massive need of healing in the game. My friends and I found ourselves way too often spending over 80% of our income on that one item to progress in the game which is unfortunately not really optional til the game is designed so that the enemies will usually shred you into pieces in higher encounters.
This review only reflects one of the many gamemodes in this game but spite this critique I have to say that the game is definitely worth playing if you have some friends who enjoy the fantasy setting and want to try out something new without spending a lot of money or sacrificing a lot of diskspace while also being entertained for a decent amount of time for its price.
damn fun and really worth the price ( bought at 80% discount ) I find it a bit buggy like the game froze sometimes.
me and a friend beat this stupid game after 54 hours...
on the easiest difficulty
This is a good game. It's fun to play by yourself or when chilling out with friends. I've spent many an evening relaxing with this game and trying to get to the next fight... and next dungeon... and next boss...
The game has a handful of different adventure types, so there's some variety. Most of them are longer adventures with quests, but there's also an endless dungeon mode and a multiplayer PvP (gold rush is short but it's a blast with friends!).
And it's pretty replayable. Expect plenty of failure on your first several (or more) playthroughs, but it's pretty awesome when you finally beat an adventure. I found the adventures reasonably fun to replay even after beating it the first time. The story stays the same between plays, but your actions and random chance do make things play out differently.
A few minor complaints about the game. These weren't that bad but might be worth noting:
1) Steam remote play is kinda buggy. I have experienced an issue when playing with a friend who was using controller remotely. They couldn't pick up books of lore, which really messed up the flow of gameplay (bc the game would get stuck and we'd have to reload it to make a different player receive the book). Sometimes the game just bugs out.
2) Status effects are sometimes buggy. This problem is rare but weird. On one playthrough, Fergus the Mad ocurred but the effect never kicked in until after I reloaded the game. On another occasion, my character got cursed out of nowhere despite being immune to curses. That was infuriating.
its a good turnbased game fun to play with friends if you want a chill game :;D
For The Emperor! Oh wait wrong game... eh still really fun though.
So much fun to play with your buds. We beat up a wizard and stole his jammies. We killed a witch and stole her wig.
The game is pretty fun, but god my luck is shit in it. i never find any good weapons for me, but somehow my friends always get the best weapons! so i'd say if your luck is shit, do not play it.
Played a couple dozen hours after getting it for free in that other store. Liked it so much that I actually bought it and all the DLC and FTK II over here. Definitely worth it if you have people to play with. It's fun playing solo too, but it's exponentially more fun to yell, argue and occasionally fist fight with the other two morons that decided to play with you.
It's a good little game. The encounters can go from "casual" fun to a frustrating "you're all dead". I have only 9 hours in it but I really enjoy it. If you want in depth coverage of the game play, you're in the wrong review.
It's like D&D, but you can seemingly only roll 1 and 20 and the DM stands behind you with a gun to your head and says "hurry up or I kill all of you".
I dunno, I hoped for something different.
If you enjoy hard-as-balls combat, micromanaging your healing items for the final encounter AND being nearly 100% relying on luck, this game might be more fun for you.
95% per slot, 3 slot, fail all
51% per slot, 5 slot, hit all perfectly
im ending myself
This is overall a fun game that's well executed, but decisions by the developers ruin the fun for me.
I really enjoyed this game to start, but it constantly kicks you in the nuts. Get a great weapon? It'll break on a critical botch. Fight a master thief? He'll steal all your character's gold and even if you kill him, you can't get it back. Get hit with an acid attack? It'll randomly destroy a piece of gear every other tick or so.
If you've got a high tolerance for losing, maybe this won't be a deal breaker for you, but it was for me. This game warns you up front that your party will die, but I *wasn't* dying. I was doing great, I was just constantly losing my loot, which totally killed the fun for me. Games are supposed to be fun, so for that reason alone, I cannot recommend it.
Also the interface randomly stopped letting me access my inventory during combat, which meant I couldn't use my panaxes to cure the acid that was destroying my loot. Not sure if that was a bug or a game mechanic, but it was the final straw. If you're a loss tolerant player, this is still a good game, but if the idea of doing a quest for a sweet purple sword only to critically botch and have it get destroyed ON THE VERY FIRST USE (happened to me), then save your blood pressure and skip this game.
This game will kick you in the jewels over and over again under the guise of being "hard." Recommended if you don't get enough of the random cruelty of life and would like more via a game.
A pity because the game has good bones. As difficulty climbed though, it became more of a misery grinder than something fun.
If you want to see a hard game that's actually good at being hard, go play The Last Spell instead.
good time little hard to find others for long term but def worth
really struggled with the game first time trying; it was just me and my bf aand it was very hard to manage support/damage balance as a group of only two- we either went full damage and suffered on healing/buffing and died as a result; or either one of us would take up full support role and we'd still die due to insufficient party damage.
it seems the sweet spot is to have a three people group; we had a friend join up recently and we're currently on our third map. been really fun. idk how it goes on hard mode but we're slowly getting there. game has its ass moments sometimes; you get f load of gold at the final objective- the campaign ends :D can't spend it or have it accumulate in some sort of other type of currency too...wow you're trolling your players!! how unique of you XD
How do you make blacksmith so miserably bad. I have to wait for the enemies to act 3 times in a row and my teammate die before I can fucking do anything this game is dogshit dont waste your time
Still very buggy in 2024, frequent crashes and connectivity issues.
Devs also need to learn there is a difference between "challenging" and "bullshit." A fun challenge is when things don't go your way and you can strategize your way out of it. However in this game, you can very frequently run into situations where enemies who are lower level than you can easily permanently stunlock you. Think you can use focus to stunlock them instead? Nope, you don't have any focus because enemies keep draining it. There simply aren't enough resources in this game to make skill more of a factor than luck. Increase player agency please.
Fun game with good challenge
this game's master mode is hard asf
This game has been so much fun to play with my girlfriend!
Super fun and well worth the money, although I just got it for $4 on Steam winter sale, I am sure it would be worth the $20, but $4 is an absolute STEAL.
Tons of replay-ability, and now that I understand that it is a game about doing different campaigns, and that dying is just a part of the game. The lore store is a neat way to reward players for completing missions and quests too!
It’s 10 hours of happiness. The content is easy to understand and play, with an exciting and fun storyline. The information is minimal, making it easy to follow. The pros are excellent, while the con is that players might get so hooked on the game they forget to eat. In conclusion, eat a lot and enjoy the game as much as possible. Rating: 10/10.
This is my first time playing a "DND-like" game, and I can say it is not that hard to understand the mechanics. I finished my first play-through, ofc with a loss :D, but I definitely will try another run, because the "Lore Store" feature gives me more things to try and unlock. Basically, this is a Rogue-like combined with DND-like type of game, it is pretty fun for someone who wants to play DND but is kinda afraid because of how complex DND can be, this is a good starter I think.
TLDR: Great Games and Very Fun.
Congratulations to For the King for inventing the woeful low-art "Glass" aesthetic of indie games that have little to no story to immerse you into their textureless, solid color polygons game worlds - about a good 3 years before they became common.
This is one of the better games that I have played in awhile! A fun refreshing game to break up the monotony of comp sweaty games!! Would recommend.
Killed a wizard as a minstrel who played the gun
10/10 would reset lock again
A very fun and fresh take on Roguelikes, with short campaigns, fair and challenging gameplay along with couch co-op. A turn-based RPG hidden gem!
9/10
Honestly, just a great game to play with friends. A solid RPG with plenty of random elements to keep things interesting. Can't recommend enough.
its like dungeons and dragons but for people who cannot afford the $30 starter pack and have no friends that know how to play
I think this game is really good and I've never played Dnd but this feels like a more toned down version of Dnd.
GOATED GAME
its Simple But fun
Yes get it Great amount of fun for the Price
Very good game like a pokemon rpg but better than they would make it with fun classes
This game is like a dumbed-down version of Dungeons & Dragons, which I love, because Dungeons & Dragons is way too complicated for me! The gameplay is addictive and you'll find yourself saying, "just one more turn..." I really enjoy it! Get used to dying a lot, though.
Windowed version is very sloppy. Game play is not great in certain dungeons. I wouldnt buy this if I knew the bugs it has
Viscerally unfun game that fundamentally confuses the concept of difficulty with being unpleasant. I'm not sure who the target audience is that would enjoy this, I couldn't picture such an individual. In addition to the abysmal gameplay that I don't want to get into. The game has criminally poor explanations for its mechanics and bad UI.
Best case the game is funny to gift your friends to have them experience it and hopefully get a laugh out of it before uninstalling. The bad and the ugly is found here, go somewhere else for the good.
It feels like a dnd style game (with save scumming!) and there's stuff to unlock to add to the next playthrough. Pretty fun game overall, I really like it
Really fun game that captures the feeling of pen and paper RPGs, board games, and couch-co-op in one! Also, much tougher than it looks! Perfect for a group of gamers with differing tastes, quirky art, and a charming world / atmosphere
I enjoy the story and how easy it is to get into.
Played on console alot and just got it for PC and love it to death
Good game, please don't rage and post a negative review after your first TPK, you're meant to try, your meant to lose and your meant to try again, use new strategies and new teams, and its sales are normally a good price
Spent almost 6 hours in one run just to die in the end. Would run it back again.
Almost returned this game soon after I bought it, but I am so glad I didn't! It is not hard to learn most of the rules, and you get over that it only has "iron man mode." The stories are whimsical, the animations funny, character management is complex but fun, and it involves a lot of careful strategy and luck - I found myself really getting addicted!
very fun game in co-op. also, I hate the leprechaun.
its cool to play with friends. also very rng reliant, but i am in a position where i cannot complain about rng, so i guess its fine
Love this game, need to beat it.
Solid 11/10, great game
This game is based on a single unifying design principle. A middle finger to the player. Want to explore? Too bad. If you try to move around the map, you'll be ambushed or even better be tricked into thinking you found something that might help you, only to find it's rigged to actually put you even further behind.
if you try to separate from your team at all, you will be punished as encounters are proximity based. So if you try to fan out and use your time wisely, by taking another characters turn to find another point of interest, you will be isolated and killed.
There is perma death and you can't save as the save button is tied to the exit button. So essentially, you are dealt a bad hand from the start and if one tiny thing goes wrong, you have to start all over again from the beginning.
Want to spend your money on new gear? doesn't matter, because the relentless clock ensures that you have to keep pushing forward and as a result the power curve continues to shift until those items become irrelevant. Which happens very quickly.
want to level up your character to give yourself an advantage? Too bad. All leveling means is that your enemies are stronger and resources now cost more.
There is no progression. Leveling doesn't give you any new skills. There is no true character identity, there are no true RPG elements. Leveling just means a number goes up next to your character portrait and your enemies scale up.
Want to play smart resource management so you can save your team in a tough spot? Too bad, the enemies have abilities that will steal all the resources you've been so desperately trying to hold onto and those cheat abilities never miss.
Want to strategize by making your tankiest character take the hits so you can survive an encounter? Too bad, the enemies just do constant AOE damage and those never miss either.
But all YOUR abilities will miss unless you use the focus you need to survive. Want to save your focus for those critical moments? Too bad, every encounter is set up to force you to use your focus just to ensure you don't start out the encounter at a severe disadvantage, and if by some miracle you do save your focus then the enemy can just steal that too.
(one of my characters had full focus in an encounter and with one ability the enemy took ALL of it!)
This cheap game design is most obvious in dungeons, where you have to make it all the way through without a reset of health or focus, so you are at a constant disadvantage and it's almost inevitable that this ever increasing disadvantage will finally build to a point where there is no way to win. The only thing you can do is cross your fingers and hope for lucky rolls.
And the save system is a slap in the face. It's obviously rigged, but they get away with it by hiding behind the label of "rogue like" and they frame it early on by saying, don't expect to beat this your first time. Which makes the player think: ok, this will be difficult, but fair and beatable with enough experience and skill.
Except gotcha, it's not difficult in a rewarding sense. Just blatantly designed in every single facet to put you, and keep you, in a state of severe disadvantage.
And the only way to overcome that is to sink more time into it until finally you get lucky. But even those who are fast to catch onto this trick will probably play past the refund period before they realize it's rigged. It's such dishonest and predatory design. It's like a mobile game disguised as a legitimate steam game.
This design exploits player psychology by keeping you in a constant state of barely surviving. Every single action you take is punished and there is no way you as a player have agency to shift the balance of the odds completely stacked against you. It's all based on random chance. The only thing that can bring you closer to victory is sheer hours spent.
You aren't rewarded for strategy or skill. You are a victim of circumstance. It's like a slot machine. Designed specifically to exploit your hope that the next roll will get you somewhere. But instead of taking your money, it steals precious hours of your life that you'll never get back.
And when you step back and think about all the time you've spent, you realize that you were never really having fun. You were just in a constant state of agitation and desperation the entire time. The thing that keeps you going is the primal need to survive. And what's even more insidious, is that by the time most people realize that they have been exploited, they justify it as "fun" because of the sunk cost fallacy.
Dark pattern based game design. Hidden behind cutsie graphics and deceptively "casual" style of play. Most people don't even realize it or if they do, they convince themselves that it was worth it. The reviews reflect this. Don't fall for it.
It's the game equivalent of walking into a crooked casino and getting cleaned out. Then on your way out the door, they gaslight you into thinking you had a good time.
The game doesn't cost much, so wasting money isn't really a problem, but please don't waste your time.
It's fun :)
THE KRAKEN IS COMING NOOOOOOOO, BUY ALL THE INK YOU'LL REGRET IT IMMENSELY IF YOU DON'T
I like this game except for the ticking timer. Maybe its the game mode I played, maybe its editable in the settings (but the settings said it would disable some achieves), but yeah I loved the combat, the gearing, the hex map... but I learned I couldn't play the way I like to play these kinds of games - grind around the map getting way too overpowered then dealing with the quests later... I failed once the stages reached level 4 after a few hours of playtime.
I will keep playing a little longer. I got 2 currency pieces after my first game that I believe is used on the rogue like style of getting more powerful, so MAYBE the game becomes what I like eventually after you lose a couple of times.
