MAGICALxSPIRAL is a short platformer with JRPG elements that attempts to capture the nostalgia of the first PlayStation era. While it showcases solid voice acting, artistic direction, character design, and a captivating soundtrack, it falls short in several areas, ultimately making it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend.
The game follows a unique concept, requiring players to complete it four times to fully experience the story. Each run offers slight variations in cutscenes, levels, and available spells, adding some replayability. The stages consist of ascending spiral towers, and players collect coins to purchase items, learn new spells, or increase stats. However, this promising idea is hindered by various drawbacks.
One of the major issues lies in the enemy AI, which is incredibly lackluster. The level design would have been enjoyable if not for the terrible enemy AI that detracts from the overall experience. It becomes frustrating to navigate through the stages when enemies pose little challenge or act illogically. Boss battles are very bad too.
Furthermore, the brevity of the game combined with an inefficient spell-learning system leaves much to be desired. With only ten levels and five bosses per run, MAGICALxSPIRAL feels disappointingly short. In the span of four playthroughs, I managed to learn just two out of approximately thirty available spells. The overwhelming number of spells coupled with the limited gameplay time makes it useless and nearly impossible to experience them all. To learn new spells, players must accumulate a significant amount of coins, resulting in tedious farming and replaying of stages.
Although the graphics pay homage to the first PlayStation era, invoking a sense of nostalgia, they may not resonate with all players. The retro aesthetic has its charm, but it might not appeal to those seeking more modern visuals.
In conclusion, while MAGICALxSPIRAL showcases strong elements such as voice acting, artistic direction, character design, and music, it is marred by subpar enemy AI, brevity, and an impractical spell-learning system. The game's potential falls short of its ambitions, making it difficult to wholeheartedly recommend. If you are a fan of nostalgic aesthetics and don't mind the shortcomings, you might find some enjoyment in MAGICALxSPIRAL, but for most players, it's best to approach this title with caution.

Game was kinda ok. Nothing to good nothign too bad. But is good as a Doujin Game. 70/100!

I had a feeling i wouldnt like this because of the vertical tower aspect making me sick. After a short while it does start to give me a headache. Aside from that though, its basically 4 or 5 levels in all. And you have to do 2 playthroughs with 2 characters, so 4 total playthroughs. The enemies are brain dead and the bosses on the higher levels are way more spongy and either sit there for a few seconds or go bat shit crazy.
If I had to describe Magical x Spiral in a single word, it would have to be "Charming."
You start off playing as Medianne Phirti, a sweet girl who yearns to be a part of a magical world. Even if it's a childish goal, it's her heart's wish all the same.
In pursuit of that dream, she finds: the Tower, an ancient proving ground to determine who is worthy to enter the magical land of Celestria; and Salamander, an adorable magical being who teaches her the beginnings of magic.
Together, they face the Tower's trials, add other magical beings to the party, and gradually discover the truth behind why Celestria separated from the mundane world so long ago...
Charming.
The characters are lovable and the story is classic.
Fully voiced in Japanese, and decently translated into English. Nearly every input you make will have a corresponding response from your character.
It's gameplay is rather straightforward. Climb the 2.5D spiraling tower. Fight or avoid the enemies in your way. I especially like to find ways to chain spells to rocket around the tower super fast. (Your character's face on the HUD will change expressions based on what your doing or what they're saying. It's a very simple detail, but it's just too cute.)
The animations are a little wonky, but honestly that just makes it even more charming to me.
This game didn't screw with my brain, yank the rug out from under me with groundbreaking twists in the narrative, or depress me with a nihilistic world of living death.

I absolutely recommend this game.
MAGICAL×SPIRAL is an enjoyable, but very short, 2D platformer.
You have to climb a magic tower in order to reach the magic land Celestria, avoiding traps and defeating enemies along the way.
You have some fairly basic (but fun) abilities at your disposal, such as shooting fire (or water), creating earth shields, dashing and flying(!). The abilities and your character can be upgraded by spending coins which you earn by defeating enemies or opening chests.
My main complaint is that the game is really short. It consists of 5 stages and bosses, which can be beaten in less than 30 minutes. The game does have a "true" (=hard) difficulty which can be unlocked by beating the game twice, once with each of the two available characters, however the game is still short as the true route only adds a level or two and an additional boss.
Still, I enjoyed the game while it lasted.
Recommended if you just want some 2D spiraling fun for a couple of hours.
Hate to be that guy after being excited for this game, but I do not recommend this
First off its very short for the price. The first playthrough was an hour and a half for me. You have the option to play again as someone else but I didn't
Secondly the AI is awful. Enemies will just stare you in the face they don't react to to and will keep running their cycle. You have to chase down bosses and when they are done attacking will just stand there for a good 5 seconds. There was no challenge or fun in fighting so to me it loses any replay value
A small thing I would like to see fixed is the lack of animations when you shoot a long distance spell, they just fire out of your body standing perfectly still and it looks silly
Also I don't know if it's a bug but when you fire spells your synch with your spirit goes up whether you're hitting anything or not so you can just charge the synch on all spirits easily before a boss.
I feel like this game had potential but really fell short
