Warning: GameGuru Asset Flip!
Hunted: One Step Too Far - Reborn Edition Remastered is a what Valve calls a "Fake Game". The "developer" bought the GameGuru first person shooter construction kit (no coding required, it's just a GUI!) and cobbled out a map or two using stock GameGuru assets... nothing in this game can fully be called the creation of the developer, and yet they also failed to credit GameGuru or acknowlegde any of the GameGuru assets. They're trying (badly) to pass someone else's work as their own.

It's just a bunch of random GameGuru assets dropped around a really lazy, stock textured GameGuru map template. Admittedly some effort (not much) went into creating a backstory about how and why the GameGuru stock assets were dragged and dropped onto the map, but make no mistake, this is just another lazy GameGuru FPS construction kit asset flip... it has no value as real game for gamers. GameGuru is trash.

You can make the argument that GameGuru exists to just make demos and little experimental games to pass around with friends, but that's not what's happened here... the developer is seriously trying to scam people into paying money for this construction kit copy+paste asset flip. That's not okay!

As with all GameGuru asset flips, resolution and controls are locked, there's no graphics tweaks or settings. GameGuru's FPS mess is hot wet garbage, runs like a legless dog on even the best gaming rigs... so obviously this game suffers from all those defects too. Combine that with the game design quality you would expect from someone who knows nothing about game development and uses GameGuru FPS creator as a substitute for his lack of knowledge, and the terrible result is obvious... this is one of the worst games on Steam.

The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 6 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 110,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 110,000+ games on Steam?

Hunted: One Step Too Far - Reborn Edition Remastered has the almost unethical price of around $8 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.

For comparison, the $8 asking price for this game could get you games like "7 Days to Die", "Metro Exodus" or "Final Fantasy XIV Online". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

This game is a trash asset flip, the same monsters from every other steam lowcost trash development cycle, basic unity engine assets you find in every other asset flip, it's basically giving your money to scammers, this game is utter shite, not even worth half a cent.

This game has a great concept and a story that had great potential. Which makes me pretty torn about leaving a review, but I can't recommend it.

It's very buggy - the loading screen is longer than a Civilization game (and you hit the loading screen a LOT, each time between levels), many of the graphical assets are disjointed (the rain in one scene falls behind the grass), if you alt-tab out of the loading screen it crashes the game and you have to verify files to fix it or it won't work again, I had to manually adjust a config file to get the game to work at all in the beginning - to name a few.

All of these things would be occasionally frustrating but easy to overlook for me, if the game play was fun and/or interesting.

It isn't. It's a walking simulator. No puzzles. No traps. No tricks. Just... walking. At one point there is very out-of-place parkour.

There are a few enemy encounters but the logic doesn't make a whole lot of sense (sometimes you get attacked when you stray from a marked path... sometimes you don't...) and it's not a challenge or scary or a creative puzzle, just frustratingly unexpected.

Couldn't even boot it up. Don't know if it'll take a while for it to load or not, but I've had much bigger games take less time to load. Bigger games don't 'not respond' when starting a new one. Waste of time.

This game gets my enthusiastic thumbs up.. It's not the best horror game on Steam... It's not even that scary or exciting. But what this game is... Is the best damn GameGuru game I've ever played. And yes, I even enjoyed it for the most part.

The outdoor environments the developer made in this game, especially at the end and the music he made are nothing but AMAZING considering that he was working with the GameGuru engine.

Watch my entire playthrough of this game HERE: (Warning: Spoilers)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWX0xplMFTI

In the end, I give this game an 8 out of 10 and say "well done" to the developer. If you made "this" with GameGuru, I can't wait to see what you can make with better tools such as Unity or Unreal.

Highly Recommended to anyone who might believe that it's impossible to make a good game with GameGuru. Otherwise it's just recommended (not highly recommended) =)

I can't really recommend this game. First of all I had great trouble just starting a new game. When it finally worked, the first loading screen took nearly 5 minutes. The premise of the stroy felt quite weak.

The first "level" was sort of a build-up in atmosphere. Although the game had told me to save often, I didn't do it. I just didn't feel threatened, just a little mystified. Then, at beginning of the second level, the game told me with a sound that something special was close. I died, hadn't saved, and had to reload the entire game with the near infinity loading screen and start the game over (bonus: first cutscene is not skipable). When I did I was rewarded with a completely green screen. Didn't see shit. Not wanting to wait another eternity with loading and cutscene. I just quit. A 3 hour long game, I already spent one hour with zero progress.

Sure, I should have saved the game. But not even automatic chapter saves? With these immensely long loading screens it shouldn't say "save often". It should say "no autosaves at all, save progress all the time".

[Spoilers]
The time I died was just ... what happened? The game told me something interested was ahead. Last time it was a note. This time it was someone emptying a mag in my arse, killing me in 3 seconds. I have had no introduction to any enemy. Just walking in the dark for 20 minutes, reading stuff from some guy, then from the pitch black BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! totally disorientated, screen totally red due to injury and I died. There is simply nothing "game" about this. There was nothing I could see/do/figure out to avoid dying. It just isn't good enough with games that teaches you how to progress by loading a save after failure. Especially when there is no automatic save system.

Really disappointed.

Oh. My. Fucking. LORD. Someone actually made a vaguely decent GameGuru game.

The first hopeful sign: a different-looking MENU to other GameGuru games. The next hopeful sign: a different-looking LOAD SCREEN to other GameGuru games, boasting what is easily the best image I have ever witnessed in such a game (only a still image, granted; but hey, even the smallest of miracles is a good start)!

We're then confronted with a typically and worryingly long load time, almost tailor-made to dupe you into thinking your computer has crashed. We do eventually get to the beginning of the game, however: a CUTSCENE, no less, with WRITING on the screen telling the vaguest semblance of a setup to a...wait for it...

A STORY!

(Disclaimer at this point: I had been drinking - just a little, but not too much - prior to commencing this game. So it's possible I just imagined all of this.)

Before I proceed any further, some of you are probably asking: wait, what's this GameGuru thing he keeps going on about? My only response to which is a famous Monty Python quote, namely: "You lucky, lucky b*stard!" If you've never experienced the usual (unintentional) horrors of product created with the GameGuru "engine", you're a very fortunate person indeed. Suffice it to say, if you don't want to start off on the wrongest of feet, you might want to begin with this game. It's no masterpiece, but it's seriously not too bad, especially compared to its ill-birthed brethren.

What makes this GameGuru game notably better than others I've endured to date is the fact that the developer clearly put in some effort. I mean, it's not exactly the spiffiest of game engines to begin with, but this product proves that it's perhaps not such a terrible place for fledgling devs to start after all...PROVIDED YOU'RE WILLING TO PUT IN THE EFFORT.

No, "effort" does [i/]not mean a single afternoon's slapping-together of random assets, gameplay lasting barely five minutes, and a hastily cobbled-together Store page on Steam. It means actually putting some love and thought into your game design, and some care into its execution.

Now, I'll say it again: this game is far from perfect. The graphics still err on the ugly side (hey, it is GameGuru); the writing is only barely passable (I suspect we're still dealing with non-English speaking devs here); and the quality of the story and gameplay, while commendable by GameGuru standards, won't exactly be keeping the likes of Clive Barker or Red Barrels up at night. The sound, though, is actually pretty darned fine for the most part; which again shows that the devs have done their homework, and know what's most essential in a low-budget horror game. If nothing else, Hunted: One Step Too Far is a great example of squeezing the most out of extremely limited resources.

One thing I really do have to mention, though: CRASHES. Expect a lot of them, and save regularly (you can do so at any time). If game instability is one of your absolute pet peeves, you really will want to skip this one. If you're a little more tolerant of such things - as well as the aforementioned epic load screens - then I will continue to recommend this product. But again, probably only to those so horror-jaded that they can at least appreciate a decently-made horror game, as opposed to an absolute piece of sh*t or an exemplary masterwork of the genre.

If you understand how difficult it is to make an even PASSABLE horror game in the current era, you just may appreciate the love evidently put into this one. Quite the achievement, all things considered. Oh, and a quick answer to the question so many of us ask these days, when it comes to horror games: walking sim, or is there danger? Answer: yes, there's danger. I'll leave it up to you to find out when, and how. Enjoy!

Verdict: 7/10.

This game is a Memory HOG!!! I really wanted to like this game but when it takes a literal 5 minutes (yes I timed it) to load from a SSD drive with 16 GB of ram and an Ryzen 7 (16 cpu's) on win 10 with direct x 12. This is ridiculous!!! Not trying to be smart but my 1980's Commodore 64 still loads games faster than this. In my 30+ years of gameing I have NEVER found a game in my life that takes this long to load (includeing games from the 80's where you had to use four floppy disks.) If you change the load time I will change my review. Im sorry this is totally unacceptable in the year 2018 for a two year old game to be this sloppy!! At 89 cents its still not worth it.

Initally, I could not get this game to load. My former computer was a top of the line 2013 Macbook Pro. I spent a total of three hours trying unsuccessfully to load the game on that computer before giving up.

I've since upgrade to a top of the line 2019 Macbook Pro, and now the game will load, though loading screens still take a couple minutes to complete, and loading screens occur frequently throughout the game.

Pros:
-The game IS spooky
The music is creepy.
-The controls are smooth and handle well

Cons:
-Long load times even on good computers
-On half the levels, the top part of my screen was covered with artifacts from the glitchy graphics, and that made it very hard to see at times.
-Whenever I died and tried to load my last save, my screen would go totally green despite repeated attempts to load it. The only way to get past the green screen was to verify the game's files through Steam and repair the 49 files that somehow get damaged after each death.
-Statues of pooping frogs aren't really the scariest enemies
-The plot and the way the story plays out don't feel cohesive or satisfying.

This game is not for me but thats my opinion and this is why.
First I would like to thank the developer for his/her time.
1st Beware that the game takes ages to load its first level I thought it had crashed because nothing was happening but the game is loading.
2nd I start off at the begining of a path at night looking for letters and trying to avoid the monster there is no compass or arrow to guide me so I gets lost and then bored with this reason why I dont like it.
Some people will like this game works fine good price of £1.50p graphics are ok so I will give it a thumbs up getting lost in a game just bores me.

This was surprisingly well done.

I would like the dev to know I very much enjoyed this. I love games with atmosphere and this definitely had it.

There are a few things I'd personally recommend changing from my fellow developer standpoint:
-Increase movement speed by about 10% - you walk very slowly
-Increase footfall pace by about 20 points because you move slightly off track with the sound effect
-Look into the notes appearing - sometimes they just don't pop up so it kills the atmosphere and kills the story
-Make the statues pathfinding a bit better
-Add a bit more to make the environments when you're just walking for minutes at a time
-There are a few typos but that may be because the developer isn't native speaking English

I really enjoyed this and found it to be very entertaining. I did beat it in less than 2 hours but it was worth the money. I can see a lot of time was put into this and the developer cared about how the game looked. It felt like it was professionally done, even though it was so short.

I don't let engines sway my opinion on games since I personally have made some pretty impressive things with very basic tools. (I've been told that, I'm not patting myself on the back) I think this developer has done that too. It's the little things that really stood out to me like how well the environments were made, the sound effects, the cutscenes, and even down to the flash light sound effect. Most of the gameguru games are pretty bad like rpg maker games but this was very well done.

I think the gameguru community could learn a lot from the dev of this game.

8/10

Also: I've never heard of geocaching until this game. I knew about the concept but didn't know it was an actual thing. I actually want to try this in real life. I've always been an outdoorsman and a survivalist and I love things like camping, hiking, etc. This whole thing actually inspired me to look it up in my area and found that it's actually quite popular. (I live in the country so there are a lot of areas to explore) I think I'll try it, but I'd definitely go packing heat. Not blankets either. Thank god I live in a pro gun state.
I started the game and really enjoyed it at the beginning. The sound and environment were great for a small erngine (Game Guru). The developer added little touches to the outside world with pigeons along some of the rooftops, various rabbits hopping around and even a few deer here and there. Once, we got to the Asylum, everything went downhill. What started as a walking sim with pages to read becomes a running sim as stone statues try to get you along with a few undead inmates walking the halls. When I first saw the inmate, your first creature encounter, I laughed. It wasn't spooky. Just comical. The statues were gargoyles (the best creatures in the game) and a female statue. That is all you will encounter in the game. The rest of the game in the Asylum is just running while finding keys and unlocking doors while trying to read the occasional note which tries to explain some of this and at times you will not have a moment to read them because another gargoyle is slamming into you from behind trying to kill you. The explanation for why the guy who brought you here and the monsters he controls is lame. Nothing special. Near the end you will be tortured with a "climb the extremely long jumping platform puzzle" (I posted a photo) and then finally escape the Asylum. Afterwards, it will turn into a walkling simulator again with a lone statue following you every once in a while. This part of the walking sim is LONG. God awful long. As others have stated that fps drop when you are outside. I'm talking 8 fps on a Titan X folks. Add that to an already ridiculously long walking sim to get to the end and you are bored. You'll just wish it was over. They must have added this long pathway just to pad the playtime to 2+ hours. Finally, at the end the police already got the bad guy while you were busy sleeping and walking all along the countryside. His assistant, Tom (you'll find out a tiny bit about him if you read the correct lone note before entering the Asylum) is nowhere to be found or even mentioned. We do know he tries to tip off the bad guy to warn him the police are nearby and that is all. Leaving you at the very end that the statues are still out there and you may be hunted. Um....yeah....whatever. And the final tedious act we are left with is to be forced to watch the credits with no way to escape them. Great start but an overall bad game. Not worth your time. Oh, and you may encounter the occasional crash and a green screen that takes over the entire screen when you load a saved game. The developer's solution is for you to completely exit the game and restart it as this is a solution for other games using Game Guru that also have the same problem. Have fun doing that a few times! :(- [/spoiler

"Hunted: One Step Too Far" is a neat concept, with an all too familiar twist...

=====

Rather than my regular breakdown, I want to keep this simple and not give anything away, really, for those interested.

As a person who has partaken in Geocaching, and spent countless hours following clues, logging coordinates, and solving riddles to find the cache boxes, I found the concept of this game to be very intriguing. When I first played, I thought "Wow, this is really capturing the feel of going on a Geocache!" The main menu was well polished, and the opening cinematic gave a very good setup of the plot. The "tutorial-esque" area at the beginning was well done, and the atmosphere of being alone with nature, with only a primitive "guide" of sorts to show you the way to safety was a great touch.

Soon to follow those feelings, however, were feelings of disappointment as it began to devolve into cliche.
Asylums, crazed people with deranged motivations, and "take your eyes off them and they move!" mechanics...

I wasn't happy that it turned out this way.

It's a great looking game built on a fantastic concept, but it fell victim to going the "easy" route and following every other indie "horror" game out there.

=====

Do I recommend?
No, I can't.

They really botched what I feel was a great concept, with a fantastic setup, that could have been the type of game that makes a mark and holds its' own, but instead it cheaped out with run-of-the-mill tropes.

..It does make me want to go out Geocaching again though~ :)

I really hate people who put down a game because it doesn't work for them when obviously it's YOUR problem, not the developers...

This game is fantastic and is completely deserving of a better rating than "Mixed" because it has a great story behind it with much atmosphere to it with no cheap jumpscares and for a first game, it is an absolute masterpiece to the horror game category.

Do yourself a favor and play the demo before prejudging it and if you don't like it, move on. If you DO like it, do purchase it and support a very talented developer so (t)he(y) can continue improving in there craft!

This game has potential. Dont buy if you want a polished game as it is pre alpha. This game is great for pre alpha

You are a protaganist with the hobby of following co ordinates at night to find things. But the only thing you find is your self in a sticky situation.

The nature in the game night and day is beautiful for an indie game.

Pros
+ Pretty
+ Music is amazing
+ atmosphere is amazing
+ Does not scare you with jumpscares
+ Has a good mystery
+ Cheap

Cons
- Poorly optimised
- Very buggy it says "save often" as the game will crash
- The notes you find can glitch causing you to get the same note every time
- The animals have no walk animation
- Walking simulator at the end of the game
- Loading screens take too long
- When you die you have a few loading screen just to respawn
- Cannot skip the intro even if you have seen in 10 times
- Short if you skip all the needless walking at the end of the game

Should you buy?
If you dont mind a early version of the game with lots of bugs and have a computer that can handel the game. Yes

Even if I knew nothing about the game, I would praise it.

Why?

Because it nails the perfect balance between a gloomy mystery and a dark horror atmosphere. It has a lot of suspense to offer, the world is clever designed, it seems bigger than it is (and it is actually quite huge for its scope), it offers quite some gameplay (could be more, though) and a really solid stability.

Throw in some really good and nasty surprises instead of cheap jump-scares and a good sound production, and you have a convincing little Indie horror experience better than many competitors.

However, as I am the developer of Father's Island

http://store.steampowered.com/app/460940

I know the limitations of GameGuru very well - and "Hunted" is in my eyes nothing less than a shiny masterpiece of GameGuru-driven game development.

It doesn't only dodge and evade cleverly the usual limitations GG has in its current Beta state, no, it even turns some of them into an advantage while utilising all the good sides of GG perfectly.

Summary:
8/10 as an Indie Horror Experience
9/10 as a showcase for GG game development.

Sir, I am impressed and I applaud you!

I have to say this is highly impressive! The exterior levels are terrific. I enjoyed the 'ping' mechanic for getting closer to notes. The story was pretty solid but did have a few holes in it. I would have preferred an explanation for the 'guards'. At first I was sucked in with the grounding in reality, but when the guards and other pursuers entered the story it kind of broke the immersion with the introduction of a supernatural element. Maybe it would have been more effective if the player were drugged and it was part of a hallucination. The interior levels were ...ok compared to the exterior. Some of the chase levels seemed a bit rushed compared to the care of the first two and the last two levels. Yes the last two levels are without a doubt among the best looking levels I've seen come from GameGuru. I'm an avid user and literally didn't feel like I was in a GameGuru level. As grand as they were I saw a bit of a missed opportunity; it would have been the perfect spot for some closure or exposition. Instead it was just a looooooong quiet walk through some amazing scenery. I really want to ask did you base the levels on actual locations? The little touches, like two folding chairs in a particularly nice scene really did it justice. It's a great buy and a great representation for GameGuru as a whole.

The cutscene audio is a bit low & it seems the newer versions of GameGuru have some bugs in them which can cause a Green Screen glitch which forces a reload & this game appears to be required to be installed to the C: drive to load, but when it does; it is a really polished experience.

The cutscenes are quite grainy low quality video (which might just be a thing with GameGuru) but the content is generic but fitting.

The sound design has been well thought out & really does give you a tense Amnesia feel in the 'spooky hospital' section which I've done in at least 6 other GameGuru titles & this is the first time it felt in any way scary.

The environments are well constructed, the assets used are (in the vast majority) consistent, it still has the usual issues with plants clipping through rocks, some trees are half in the ground & half the roots floating in the air & some of the maps are just a little too big, but this is probably the best environments I've come across in the now more than 20 GameGuru games I've played.
The spooky hospital even had nice 'wind ruffling the curtain' effects which I don't think I've seen in this engine before & there was a steam venting effect whose sound I didn't immediately wince at because it was set too loud like every I've time it happens in most horror games on Steam.

The flashlight also doesn't suck bad & that is a first; and while the monsters still don't animate, the fact that they do the Weeping Angels thing & have the stock asset statues & gargoyles chase after you was was a really pleasant surprise; it probably isn't the most difficult thing to implement but it sure beats the shambling, groaning zombie models that all the other GameGuru Horror titles pass off as scary.

I've never really come away from a GameGuru title with such a feeling of competence.
These people are doing good things with an engine that I always worry when I see it go on sale on Steam because I've seen what comes out a few months later when that happens, I speedran Elves Adventure, I know of what I speak; so when I get a chance to praise a title made in GameGuru, I'm going to take it.
