Different aspects of the game
- Explore: You need to find the good keys to open the doors, find a way through the mansion and survive an alternate version, much more dark ;
- Fight: Shadows are lurking everywhere, and more powerful enemies will also try to stop you ;
- Solve riddles: logic or memory riddles need to be solved to progress through the game and the story, or can unlock some bonus items.
Of Shadows and Light
Light is an important element in the game. The mansion is shrouded in darkness and you can only count on the Teddy Bear accompanying you. It casts a light that dissipates shadows and allows you to progress.
However, Shadows are attracted by the bear's Light and try to absorb it. Thus, you need to fight these enemies before the bear's power is destroyed!
The boy possesses a resistance to madness (Mind) and a strength to fight the Shadows (Will). These characteristics can be improved by finding hidden items or missing pieces of the teddy bear.
Your Star is a Adventure-Exploration game with some RPG and Horror aspects, developped with Game Maker for Windows systems. It is based on hand-made drawings on paper, giving it a unique visual and atmosphere.

I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
Your Star is somewhat of a cult classic among horror enthusiasts. It is kind of like a weird mixture of Silent Hill and Witch's House (plays like RPG-maker but it has 2 worlds). This game has some serious technical issues and very cryptic puzzles. You definitely have to enjoy a campy experience to tolerate its flaws. Nevertheless, Your Star is a relatively unique for a horror adventure. I have played a crap load of RPG-Maker horror, but this game is weirder than all of them. Now there is a free version of this game on the internet, which is actually available from the developer. However, the Steam version has more polish, new puzzles and improved effects. If you having second thoughts, you can always use the free version as a "demo", to see if you want to buy the Steam alternative. Unlike most of the games in this genre, Your Star is completely hand drawn, which is always better than assets if you ask me.
The gameplay includes combat, resource management, and lots of puzzles. I had to use pencil and paper for some of the riddles that require math, so don't expect it to be straight forward. About 60% of the game is logical and the other 40% is convoluted, to say the least. There is a neat alternate world mechanic where things are different (sort of like Silent Hill or Fran Bow). You will also find different kinds of power-ups, some of which hidden in secrets and side-quest. When you kill enough enemies you will even level up your attributes and get items. Perhaps my favorite thing about Your Star is a psychological aspect of the game design. Your character has 3 resources which are mind, light, and will (basically health, ammo and armor aura). I think Mind is the one that drains overtime as in your character is going insane (even if you just stay still). The game sort of implies that crazy events have the effect on the character and it also impacts gameplay. Your Star has a very unsettling atmosphere, as a horror game should. I experienced loneliness and sadness playing this game, with some relief toward the end. It is very easy to get lost in the mood.
Your star has a mature story that was well paced and explained toward the end . There are side quests, secrets, and even several endings. I am a little skeptical that someone would make the effort to beat this game several times, just because it is so hard. It took me 8 hours to beat the game without a guide, but do to glitches it was closer to 14 . So with several endings, I would say game has about 15 to 20 hours worth of content .
Pros:
+ a lot of content (8 hours+multiple endings and NG+)
+ alternate world mechanic (Silent Hill style)
+ very campy and spooky narrative
+ hand drawn environment
+ many challenging puzzles
+ a lot of different gameplay mechanic
+ psychological events have impact on the character
Cons:
- very glitchy
- some music does not complement the game
- can be very hard due to cryptic logic
Final Thoughts 7/10
Your Star is not for everyone. It is very unique horror game, but you have to forgive its many problems. I personally value creativity more than just a generic game with good quality. Playing this game is almost a masochistic experience, a few can truly appreciate it, or have the patience to get through it. You can always try the free version instead (Steam version is better though).

I'm only just starting out, but so far, this game is amazing. The combat isn't too impressive, but that's not the point. The atmosphere, the mystery, the puzzles... that's what pulls you in and keeps you wanting to play. There are points where guidance is limited, and saving is disallowed in some places (and costs resources when you can save), so you should fully expect to have to repeat some sections.
I will be playing this game almost nonstop until I've beaten it.
Strongly recommended to anyone who likes dark, gritty mysteries (fans of Amnesia will most likely really enjoy this).

Update:
As much as I liked the game at first, the more I played the more the issues were made apparent. I think what initially drew me in was the mystery-oriented game in the vein of a classic SNES concept with a feel of Amnesia. But the deeper I got, the more difficult it was to proceed. I realized I was forcing myself to like the game in the last bit of play, because I really wanted it to be something I could love. The guidance is more limited than I thought, to the point where some of the puzzles are trial and error rather than something that can be clued together and figured out. Besides all that, what I think finally did it in was when I realized I had to cut my lights out to be able to see the screen, and even then I had to strain to make out some details. That made me pull back and objectively look at what I'd been playing more critically.
The game is a still a beautiful concept, but the design of the puzzles needs work, a brightness/gama option for players to customize their experience would be a huge help, and more interaction with the player outside of major story events. I wish you the best of luck, Natahem.
