hell! you made a thing. congrats
This feels like a Galaga open world game, it's basic and fun but not much more
Star Boss is a 2D top down hybrid of a twin-stick shooter and Asteroids/SpaceWar!, where you control a spaceship and instead of fighting waves of samey enemies, you fight consecutively more difficult bosses, with different attacks and abilities. You can also update your ship and weapons... so there's a little depth in an otherwise completely shallow premise, but this is unfortunately not balanced out by quality technical implementation.
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The very poor quality of this game puts it squarely on-par with ancient 1990's Flash/Java games, and given it's 2023 (and this was released not so far back in 2017), gamers and the industry expect and deserve better than this kind of low effort shovelware.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
Star Boss has the farcical price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam.
game
starbys!!
Taking out the trash is more fun than this game.

Bad. Controls are awful. The amount of energy that you have is laughable, leaving you with a weapon that doesn't actually do anything. The premise is that you're a little ship taking on big ships, but the big ships tend to be just as maneuverable. Completely fails at being fun by any measure.
RECOMMENDATION: Not that bad...
I have seen and played many games of this genre, not saying this is the best one. But this game is not that bad at all.
Every ship you need to destroy is a challenge, you earn credits to buy better ships and give them better systems. You die too often and you start all over again, especially when your ship is destroyed. This game is pretty hardcore. Buying a second ship is basically a second life or try.
I only wished that the controls were a little bit better, but it's playable.
