Armed with my Oculus Quest, I was all set for a bomb-diffusing adventure but ended up more lost than a sock in a laundry. Would it be better on the Vive? That's like asking if burnt toast tastes better with butter. The lack of movement options had me floating like a balloon lost in the supermarket. With no tutorials and controls as intuitive as a cryptic text from your ex at 3 AM.
And when you want to exit this missery? A non-existent exit menu. Because who needs a proper exit button when you are having the time of your life. Force quitting the game felt like the only way out – a metaphor for my vanishing enthusiasm for indie VR games. If this is the future of VR, I might as well dig out my flip phone to play Snake.
I've always been big into mine sweeping, but god damn this is terrible. The controls feel like they were made by Hellen Keller. Pretty nifty game still I guess. I don't understand the zombies mode either.
I have a Valve Index VR and once you get used to the controls this game is good fun. Well worth the money.
Theres no tutorial on controls in-game. There is one on steam but just for the htc vive. You cant move or flag the mines on oculus quest. Overall just a bad quality game. I'm getting a refund
Honestly, this turned out much better than I expected. It's minesweeper but in VR, what else is there to say. However, I didn't think that extra immersion would make minesweeper a much better game. Only complaint is that the controls for the Quest 2 are pretty weird. Though it's a 2016 game so it's understandable.
It game is fun. It is just Minesweeper, but in VR, it gives you the feeling that you are actually sweeping mines on the battlefield.
However, it is quite inconvenient that you are required to actually rotate your body to see the field behind you. It will be much better if the game provides a control option to rotate your viewpoint.
This game is awesome! Controls are pretty simple once you figure them out, and the effects are really cool. Graphics are pretty nice.
Overall: A great game
Doesn't seem to work well with the oculus rift. When I play I'm stuck playing the game 9 feet in the air and there's no option to set the height. I tried running the steam room setup and even the oculus one multiple times but that didn't seem to work unfortunately so I wouldn't recommend until it's fixed.
Back in the day, I kinda/sorta enjoyed minesweeper, just like most everyone else. It was free and readily available on pretty much any computer, so I played it every once in a while but never really considered it a fantastic game. Now, take the same game, toss it into VR, and here you go! It’s well done, with decent graphics (the environment is actually really nice, though you spend most of your time looking down at a flat grid) … it’s easy to understand the controls, and provides all the same challenge as before. It’s pretty startling when you hit a mine, so be prepared! The zombies mode DLC actually looks like fun, I might scoop that up down the road. Overall, this is pretty good for the price. Thumbs: UP!
If you tried to beat your best times on windows minesweeper, you'll do the same with this. Controls (on vive) were unexpected, yet very serviceable. Rather than pointing like a gun, the controls are pointed up and behind the player, as if your hands are holding tops of walking sticks. Since the vive wands are stick shaped, this adds to immersion. You don't poke with the sticks however, you just click the triggers, right for dig, left for mark. This allows you to dig or mark well beyond your reaching distance, as long as your aim is true. There's no laser pointer for aim assist, so teleport closer when you have to. I'm a big fan of smooth locomotion in other games, but I don't miss its absence here... I think it would be weird with the controller pointing way up like that.
Genius, just simple minesweeper. Get a hands on the control and start playing. With enough room space and puzzling out how the game works this game can be fun, the environment adds an extra vibe to it. However for the money I think some extra themes could be added (like good ol windows 64/7) and game modes.
The only con that comes with this game is that the mine generation is poorly designed and sometimes you will have to take a 50/50 chance to win (twice sometimes), and a few minor bugs.
Nothing wrong with this game at all, brings back memories, however I can't seem to get it to work properly with my Oculus, this is the first time I've ever had an issue where a simple resync/reset didn't do the trick. How do I go about getting a refund? I don't intend to play it with how it currently operates for me.
It's Minesweeper in VR. It's kind of hilarious how nervewracking it is. But OMG can you please fix it so "Success" is spelled correctly when you win? Seeing "Sucess" at the end of the game is super-annoying.
I don't really play regular Minesweeper that came with Windows but to play this game in 3D and feel like you are there disarming mines is really a big different!
I found myself completely addicted to the game I thought I would ever not play very much.
This is truly a gem among the VR library on Steam.
I played this on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers. I eventually got used to the gameplay, although I still don't recall how to change flags indicating whether it's a mine or a question mark. Tough call on recommending yes or no on this one. I'm going to give a very tepid recommendation because the game delivers on putting minesweeper in VR.
Normally, that would be good enough. But I'm just surprised by the mechanic the dev used to make this game. You basically teleport to the square and push trigger on the square with your ... shovel/spear/pole whatever that thing was. If you're correct it marks a number 1, 2, 3, etc. If you're incorrect, you blow up. If you know a mine is in the square, then you plant a flag (why is there a question mark flag? how does that help you? it is really not needed unless you're going AFK for a long time and forgot your train of thought or suffer from amnesia :/ .... ). Once you have discovered where all the mines are without blowing yourself up, you win. In zombie mode DLC, it seems like you really need to plant the flags as well, while you kill zombies with your shovel. Now, you do have roomscale so you can walk around, and point the shovel thing and hit trigger on the squares to reveal them.
Here's my problem with this game (besides the clunkiness of the controls and the UI), why couldn't your step be what activates the square? That way if feels like you're actually in a minefield. So walk over to the square using joystick or whatever locomotion and if you step on it and it's not the mine, a number is revealed. If you walk on it and it's the mine, then it blows up. Why wouldn't you do that? You can still mark squares as mines so that if you step on them they don't blow up. You'd have limited flags so you can't just mark every square as a mine. That's the minesweeper game I want. Just make sure to have smooth controls so your steps into the squares can be precise.
Anyways, is the game worth $3.99 as is? I don't think so. But I got it on sale for $2.39. I think this game is a $2 and change experience and it well worth that.
Rate 5.5/10 please make a step option for activating the squares dev! My score would be much higher if that were the game.
I had to pay for the vive and 4€ for the game to play this and all the kids in Africa get this for free. Life ain't fair.
It says that it's Oculus compatible but there are only instructions for the vibe controllers. I really want to like and play this game but the controls are horrible and there is no way to move around the board. There might be but I can't find instructions on how to do it for the oculus controllers which this game says it is compatible with.
Very fun to play. got it last night & my girlfriend and I played till about 1 am. She had played on windows before, but never actually knew what the numbers meant.
I really wish there was a menu to control the audio. A slider for sound effects & one for music would be great. I'd like to listen to radio or podcasts while playing. Not sure what the difference between 'arcade' mode & -blank- mode either.
Good VR experience though, really makes minesweeper fun, highly recommend
Oh man. This is one of those VR games that I see in the Steam store and immediately commit to purchasing for no reason other than to give in to my sheer inevitable fate.
Upon playing, I've discovered that this game is neither impressive nor is it underwhelming. What MineSweeper VR is - is it is what it says it is: Minesweeper, but in VR. Nothing more, nothing less. The game plays exactly as Minesweeper does, and there are no modes or unlockables. Instead, the developers have decided to stay truly classic and limit the game to nothing but the same little puzzle game with no form of spice to it other than the fact that you could change the map difficulty/size. Normally, I would commend the choice to stick to the original, however in this case it sadly feels rather uninspired.
On the plus side, the game will certainly wow you with an unexpected warzone theme. Upon entering the game, you'll be introduced to a beautiful and totally welcome battlefield, and it feels so right. If anything, the visuals of the game alone are enough to merit a recommendation. The models are much higher quality than you'd expect from a four dollar game, and everything feels refined and fresh. I loved it. It made sense, it wowed me, and it was properly executed.
One striking issue though, is a literal pain in the neck - you're looking down the entire time. This is a severe issue because it causes me neck pains and as such is hard for me to play for long amounts of times, and I'm a healthy young adult - imagine for an old geezer like you!
To reiterate, Minesweeper VR
-Beautufully maintains the feel of the original game.
-Adds a clever warzone theme that will wow the heck of you.
But...
-Is a literal pain in the neck.
-Has little variety/replayability.
The game is worth it. Perhaps not in terms of sheer value, but in terms of nifty Library adds to have, this game is priceless. If you've read this review and haven't been detered, then go ahead and toss in your four dollars. Have fun out there, but don't blow it!
Note: I haven't received this product for free but I wrote this review on my buggy phone and cannot change it back until I hit my desktop. If you're reading this, you're a select rare breed of Uranium Pepe that's 1 in 6 million. Share for good luck, ignore if you enjoy vandalizing school property.
Definitely needs polishing, but it's good and simple.
I love the controller models, they're perfect and add a nice touch of immersion.
The assets are nice and it runs exactly how minesweeper should, this was a perfect game to bring to VR.
Things I would change about this:
Despawn the debris when you start a new game, or lock the axis of the board pieces.
The debris will actually move around the board pieces when starting a new round, so the player will have to keep starting over until the debris is out of the way.
UI.
Navigating through the barebones UI is terribly confusing and could be solved with a simple point and click menu. You shouldn't have to make use of every single button to start a game.
Also, a quick restart button would be nice.
Simple hovering text over buttons whilst on a menu screen would make learning the controls 10 times easier. A player shouldn't have to take of their headset in order to re-read control schemes.
Also, check your GUI layers. Several textboxes are on a layer above the gameobjects.
