Really good. More of a puzzle game than a hidden object game it had a good plot with a more mature story line which is nice since most of these casual games are teen oriented. My one complaint is that the production values were pretty sparse with only occasional music or SFX. This reduced the spooky atmosphere but didn't ruin the game. Recommended!
Chill fun game. didn't actually take me 10hrs. I fell asleep and came back to it the next morning. Music was pretty solid and graphics, for a point and click, were delightful.
This is not a new game. I have played it about 5 times, (as i also own it over on Bigfsh) I really love it though ; great story ,great humour, really a fun adventure with tons of puzzles, game. The puzzles are not difficult; the answers are basically in clues scattered about(in true adventure game fashion). It's really important to play its successor; The Turning Thorn for a more complete story.
Need a third game. RN. ASAP.
This is such a fun & challenging game. The puzzles are amazing and the story is so nice. Totally recommend.
I was hoping for some traditional "hidden object" scenes, though the game's focus was largely on puzzles. Still, I enjoyed it overall...nice creepy artwork!
Wow! This was such an awesome adventure! I got hooked from the very beginning!
PROS:
- Intriguing story. You being held inside a interrogation cell and asked about what happened;
- The ending will blow your mind if you're not familiar with the series;
- Unique puzzles that vary in difficulty and mechanics;
- The journal is in fact a smartphone where the protagonist writes down her thoughts;
- Apart from the Hint button, you also get a photo camera where the game snaps important clues;
- Auto-saved progress;
CONS:
- No trading cards;
- No Steam achievements;
- No extra episode;
- No bonus content;
- No collectibles.
The story is about a young woman named Kiera Vale who has just inherited an asylum. Her biological family, the Wystwicks [sic], are said to have been renowned doctors that have gone mad at some point in their lives. Would Kiera be the next victim of this apparent curse? Play it. You won't be disappointed.
I've played a lot of HO games, and this one had much more challenging puzzles than most games I've come across. I actually find the cheesy story intriguing too!
the puzzles were fairly easy, but you neeeded the hint frequently. The game lacks real substance and is over quickly. At the end, you are left wondering what happens next. however..there is a sequel ,so let me play and I will get back to you all .
reasonable difficulty level puzzles & an interesting story
Very good game. The puzzles were challenging, and I was able to figure out most of them by myself. I only skipped two puzzles. The story line is simple but good, with an unexpected twist at the end.
It's old game but I really enjoy It. Lot of challenging puzzles, many of them really original. Story is average with a clifhanger at the end, so it's better buy package with second part. Game is slowly building spooky atmosfere. Graphics is nothing speacial, but for this kind of game It's enough.
If you really like soling puzzles this game is made for you.
My rating: 7.2/10
Originally released in 2010, Nightmare adventure series is an adventure puzzle game. The story about Kiera Vale, a young woman who wants to discover her ancestor's history after receiving a letter from Alton Quinn, she decided to search for her birth parents, which lead her to Blackwater Asylum.

The artwork is very nice, giving you an eerie atmosphere along with the soundtracks, unfortunately, the game doesn't have animated cutscenes or voice-overs, it relies on images and block of texts to tell the story. The good thing that the game is puzzle heavy. If you are looking for some original puzzles to solve this game will please you.

The journal is nice, it keeps track of the story and events. You also have a camera which you took photos of anything that looks off, those photos serve as hints to solve some puzzles. There is no map which means there will be a lot of backtracking. Thankfully the game is divided into multiple areas with five or six places to search in, once you are done from a section you'll be traveling to somewhere else and won't be able to go back to the previous area.

Pros:
+Interesting story.
+Good but dated artwork.
+Variety of puzzles and riddles.
+Good journal.
+Taking photos to help with puzzles.
Cons:
-No map.
-No voice-overs.
-No animated cutscenes.
-Soundtracks sometimes stop and you play with nothing playing in the background.
-No steam achievements.
I've played this game when it first released, playing it again on steam is fun. I do recommend it to people who enjoys puzzles and don't mind the dated graphics.

Nightmare Adventures 1: The Witch's Prison (Adventure-lite)
December, 2018 review update
TL; DR - Just skip to the final paragraph ;)
Options include Full-screen and Custom Cursor, plus separate sliders for Music, SFX and Brightness. One difficulty, and no achievements.
I first played this game in January of 2012, and absolutely adored it. There are elements of the game that did not hold up well - such as the graphics - but it's still a very good adventure-lite, so read on!
Cutscenes are short and to the point. To get the full story - including the prequel to the game's intro - you'll need read the blurbs in your journal (PDA) often. There are no spoilers in there, and no hints for puzzles, so read with no worries! You will find journal entries periodically, which will also expand on the story.
There is a refillable HINT button (does not discharge with directional hints), and puzzles can be SKIPPED. There are no instructions for the puzzles, but using a hint will help... Just be careful with it, as sometimes it will give away part of the solution, ie. "I think the first line should read..." Whenever these came up, I wondered how our character could possibly know that info. *shrugs* I am not the most observant person in the world, so I may have just missed something.
Any time you come across something of interest (that will help you solve puzzles), you will automatically take a picture of it, and it will be stored in the PHOTOS. When you solve the puzzle the the photo(s) are linked to, they'll magically disappear, leaving only helpful pictures behind.
Gameplay is point-and-click exploration, experimentation and puzzle-solving. The puzzles themselves range from not-so-bad to this-is-going-to-take-a-while!! If you'd like the game to be a bit (OK a LOT) more difficult, try taking notes and not using looking at your camera! Some of the puzzles are real doozies!
There is NO MAP, but you only have access to a small number of locations at a time, so there's not a lot of backtracking.
I REALLY appreciate that the devs took the time to explain WHY things we try won't work. THANK YOU, Ghost Ship! I cannot tell you how irritating it is to be told that I can't do something when logically it should work just fine! "I can't quite get it with my fingernails," is enough of an explanation to keep me satisfied.
Something else that I appreciate is that almost every item you click on has more than one response, and the second click usually had me giggling... There's even a Monty Python reference in there! We have one hidden object scene in the game as a parody, too. Very cute. *snicker*
Perhaps the most impressive thing about this game is that it was made by a small studio, with a two-person team. :o A quote by Tim of Ghost Ship Studios: "We are a tiny team, and not really fully grounded in the world of casual games as yet." A game of this length and quality from such a small team? AWESOME!
In closing, this is a high-quality game for its time, and although the graphics are dated, the gameplay, story and puzzles are very good, and still enjoyable today! Recommended both to the casual-gaming crowd and point-and-click lovers~!
This game is the first part of the Nightmare Adventures series... at least that has made it to Steam. Kiera Vale receives a letter that claims she is the new owner of a rundown abandoned asylum. What she finds there is the makings of a mystery...
Gameplay is decent, HO scenes are challenging, minigames are fun, and the plot is... adequate. As it seems to be built in a slightly older vein, there aren't as many bells and whistles as normal in these types of games.
Still would recommend, though the bundle might be preferable.
I had this on a game wishlist from an old computer. Picked it up on sale. THERE ARE NO HIDDEN OBJECTS IN THIS, it's more like a point-and-click adventure game with the Hidden Object-style look/interface. I play these for the "light mental gymnastics" and a certain mix of spookinses and campiness.
The initial mystery is intriguing. But the latter half is, I think, SEVERELY underclued (I clicked the "hint" button and thought...Now how the heck did she know this was supposed to be that? And never found the part that would have led me to thinking her same thoughts).
A relaxing way to pass a few nights, but doesn't make me jump for the sequel.
This game was a short, fullfilling, semi horror point and click game, and I did like it very much.
I loved the main character "Kiera Vale" in this one. Not really polite, have a different personality that I liked much better than in some other point and click games. The main character wasn't so stuck up. and I found her comments amuzing through the game. She said what she ment, and didn't try to hide it.
I've been playing alot of point and click games lately, and even if they have been pretty fun to play, they have also started to bore me a bit, because they have used the same type of maincharacter/protagonist and the puzzles and achievements are the same.
This one was...different! I realised from the start...no achievements...and it relaxed me at once. Through the game it also made me feel more comfortable using the hint button when I was stuck, normally something I would never do if there was achievements involved.
The only real thing to point out in this game was the resolution. Obviously you get used to it, but I wouldn't mind if I could have played it in fullscreen, widescreen.
I played this game years ago when it came out on another site but liked it enough to buy it again here.
I enjoy the snarky protagonist and the different storyline. There are some cool puzzles that I hadn't seen before. I've played a lot of these type of games and a lot of the puzzles get reused over and over, but there were some surprises here.
The graphics and artwork are a little dated but fit the theme and storyline. I loved the design of the witch.
I recommend waiting for a sale because the asking price is a little steep for the time it takes to play, especially if you're familiar with this genre of games.
