run-of-the-mill 5-hour big fish hidden object adventure, developed by eipix, released in 2012, clearly before the invention of widescreen. entries in the final cut series are standalone and I don't like hogs to begin with, so I only play the ones with cheesy fmv. not many of them altogether, not even every game in this series, and sadly not all of them are on steam, but if you like one, you'll like the rest.
the usual trimmings: various difficulties, basic settings, hidden object scenes, map (without fast travel), diary, hints, puzzle skip for the way too many rotary puzzles, strategy guide, collectibles, cut content restored, soundtrack, concept art, making of, etc. the game saves constantly and when you quit, what's missing besides fast travel is an inventory lock button to make it stay on-screen all the time. and since I have no patience for hidden object crap, I always find it annoying when the game doesn't let me quickly click all over the place to get it over with faster, like here.
For me this is a solid nostalgia play, and the game play, atmosphere and story still more or less live up to what I can recall, I can't wait to play the other ones that follow in the series...
P.S. My only critique would be; why the hell didn't they just keep the character interactions live action when it goes to dialogue?? The character animation is clunky and it would have looked fine having the full segments live action. I mean the Myst series did it and it's up there as one of the most successful...
The game's story asks you to suspend disbelief in a big way. You are in a house with a woman threatening your life, but you don't consider calling the police or just leaving? The villain doesn't tell you not to and she needs you more than you need her so calling the cops would end the problem immediately. Its not as though you're trapped there and though she threatens your brother, she needs to keep him alive to make you do what she wants so again, not really much danger. Same thing in the bonus chapter. The villain sets a trap for you and tells you that you're locked in, but then you run into another character from the game who just wandered in after some birds. Kind of takes the wind out of the danger sails. If he can get in, that means you can get out. And if you can get out, then why go on with this charade of a game? You don't need to stay there and the villain is in jail already so is no danger to you or your family.
This game got really dumb toward the end when the brother and the villain/maid took center stage. They used FMV for the cinematics and for some of the game itself and boy were the actors Bargain Basement quality! The villain was dressed as a maid, then changed into regular clothes. Then suddenly for some unknown reason, she changed into stripper clothes (I'm not even exaggerating). She wore silver lingerie with a thong, thigh high stockings, and gloves that went up her arms. She kept swaying around and cocking her head while staring at the camera as though she was trying to appear insane. Instead, she seemed like she stopped at Big Fish on her way to a Walking Dead audition. Just terrible. Horrendously bad. Why did they make her dress in lingerie? Was she supposed to be the Victoria's Secret killer? This was meant to be the 1940s! No woman would dress that way in public! Even hookers wore trench coats for God's sake!
And the actress was the same chick that voiced Nancy Drew in Secrets Can Kill (and maybe other Drew games. I never made it through the first one so I have no idea). She has a terrible Canadianish accent and sounds like somebody's mom scolding them for not cleaning up their room. It was very hard to imagine this voice as a psychopathic killer when she's the same woman who told us all about how she was going to go undercover and try to discover who killed the local jock at the high school. Nancy DrewVoice isn't good as the high school detective and she's not good as the Sexy Lingerie Killer. In this game, she kept saying awkward lines like "you better go and find those parts! I'm losing my patience." The objective was to find components to a camera, but she kept telling people to "look for parts." Just weird dialogue.
Then there was the brother. For some reason he seemed to be half Asian though neither his mother nor father nor sisters were anything but Caucasian. He had the look of a 1960s Marxist intellectual with a black suit, tiny glasses, and longish too dark hair. His acting was atrocious (which I think is fair to say since they used FMV instead of straight animation so it's easy to notice). His voice cadence had two speeds: shrill and panicked. Amateur Hour.
Finally there's the only other guy in the game: the gardener/bird watcher. He is clearly not an actor. I think he may have been a guy who worked at the local Game Stop and won some sort of award that let him be in a real live video game. He seems to have only been chosen for his ability to whistle incessantly and not much else. He is noticably uncomfortable around the camera. At one point, he glances at the camera and then tries not laugh for about 30 seconds. Haven't these guys ever heard of a take 2?! A high school drama club could do better than this!
The gameplay wasn't horrible, though there were quite a few of those inexplicable only in adventure game scenarios. Y'know, like you'll have a pair of scissors, but will refuse to cut the stem from a flower because you can only use hedge clippers. Or will drop something in between the couch cushions but can only use a magnet to retrieve it. Stupid things like that.
Some of the puzzles and mini games had long drawn out instructions that didn't make sense. There were far too many steps that were unclear and confusing at times. Part of the problem is they wrote instructions in first person and tried to be lamely encouraging. So instead of telling you "pick up this item and pull this lever," it would say, "here we go sister (yes it actually said that) I'll pick up the plugs in the left corner and then I'll try to find the right knob to turn." Why couldn't they just say, "pick up the plugs and turn the knobs?" Why did they need to do this Rah Rah routine as though the character is speaking to us in her mind? It was impossible to figure out what to do half the time! It felt like the developers were afraid to just make simple puzzles and kept adding more and more steps.
Puzzles were either way too easy (1-2 clicks and you're done) or far too long and drawn out. Even the strategy guide wasn't well written. Screenshots were loaded with colored lines and arrows with letters and numbers everywhere and directions like, "place the capacitor in the slot and pull the levers." Nowhere in the puzzle did it mention a capacitor so they used different language from the actual game in the strategy guide! This whole thing was very convoluted and similar to the NY Mysteries games, felt like it dragged on and on.
Good HOG game, puzzles are thinkers but not hard.

The first Final Cut has a kooky plot and padded gameplay, but it is also a fun and charming hidden object game with plenty of playtime for its age.
Long version:
Exploring a giant mansion is always a good way to create an atmospheric adventure, and Final Cut: Death on the Silver Screen knows that. This time, the building belongs to an erstwhile filmmaker and inventor, while we play as his daughter, who has to uncover the family secrets to save her kidnapped brother.
The secrets are plenty, and they contain twists that would put South American soap operas to shame. Even better, the game uses live actors, and their performance and voice acting bring a charming amateurish vibe to the already hammy script.
As zany the writing is, the gameplay is a stark opposite. The conventional puzzles are remarkable, but everything else is drab. The hidden object scenes are monochrome and unintuitive, and the backtracking is downright painful at times, as the mansion is gigantic and we lack any map feature. On the plus side, the game can easily last at least 4 hours.

Game Visuals
I want to mention that the visuals in the game are nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game's option menu.
Game Audio
I want to mention that audio for the game is well done. Even though the audio is somewhat simplistic and repetitive. The audio can be adjusted in the game's option menu as well.
Gameplay
There are two different difficulty game modes to choose from: Regular and Expert.
The notebook keeps track of progression in the game. Such as story events and clues.
There is an interactive map in the game. It allows the player to fast travel between each location quickly without having the need to constantly backtrack. It also indicates that there are a variety of tasks that can be completed at various locations within the game. The interactive map is automatically given at the start of the game.
There is no padlock feature that is available to lock the inventory panel in place. The inventory panel does slide up when it is being moused over.
There are some interactive items in the game. Some of the interactive items may require extra components before they can interact with. All interactive items are marked with a symbol in one of the corners.
The hidden object scenes consist of the following: Find "x" amount and Traditional word lists. Some of these hidden object scenes may require little or no interaction. Most of the hidden object scenes can be replayed in the game's extra feature section.
The puzzles are fairly easy to solve without having the need to skip any of them. Some of the puzzles can be replayed in the game's extra feature section as well.
There are two sets of collectibles in the game: Photographs and Playing Cards. They are scattered throughout the game for the player to find.
There are forty different achievements that can be unlocked from playing the game. Each of these achievements does come with some requirements that need to be completed before they can be unlocked. These achievements are in-game only.
Since this is a collector's edition game, there is a bonus chapter, but it can be accessed only after the main story is completed.
Miscellaneous
There are extra features in the game: Bonus Hidden Object Scenes; Bonus Puzzles; Wallpapers; Soundtracks; Concept Art; Game Trailers; Game's Strategy Guide. Most of these extra features can be accessed only after the entire game is completed.
Final thoughts: I have found the game enjoyable to a certain extent. The replay value for the game is low. I would recommend this game, but not at the game's full price value.
