I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
The idea of a full action game with just one mechanic (movement) is too interesting to pass up. With a clean presentation and single-screen levels that can be cleared in seconds, Ellipsis reminds me of some of my favorite levels in Super Mario 3D World, Bangai-O Spirits, and Super Meat Boy. Furthermore, levels often feature phase transformations, dynamic enemies, and other gimmicks that increase the depth and variety of gameplay. One world has vision-limiting fog. One world has stealth guards that sound an alarm if they spot you, increasing the challenge. One world even has the Superhot gimmick "time only moves when you do." These ideas are great and worthy of praise.
What should not be praised is raw difficulty design. Getting 4 stars on a level is fine—touch the blue bubbles and the exit portal without getting hit and you're good. But getting 5 stars requires speedrunning. Mouse movement speed is virtually uncapped, this speed is required, and some enemies are also too fast. Excessive speed can break down the already-simple gameplay into a repetitive exercise of memorization and raw execution instead of a more varied test of skill. Also, the difficulty of getting 5 stars is not consistent. Sometimes I'd 5-star a level after a hundred attempts, and sometimes I'd do several in a row on my first try.
One weird thing is that your goal is not actually to touch the blue bubbles—it's to collect the dots inside them. If you move into a bubble quickly without driving directly over the dots, they're sent flying across the screen. This is like jumping for coins in Mario but knocking them into a pit because you jumped at the wrong speed or angle. It's a needlessly nuanced interaction that tends to either not matter or just cause frustration.
A couple levels have spaces that look just large enough to squeeze through, but aren't. When space isn't quantified it's the level designer's job to maintain clarity.
I encountered a couple bugs while playing. Sometimes a switch remains pressed after you move off it. Sometimes you can't click a placed object in the level editor (testing and clearing the level seems to fix this). These bugs are benign but a game this simple shouldn't have any. Also, the level editor lacks several elements found in the main game which means it was never finished.
Despite its issues I actually enjoyed Ellipsis a lot—but only when I decided to go for 4 stars on each level instead of 5. If you do the same, you'll have a great time which is why I ultimately recommend it.
7/10
I had a lot of fun with this game but trying to grab all the stars when my mouse randomly jumps into a deadly vienna sausage is making me a mald just a li'l bit
A delightfully challenging little mouse game that largely prioritizes substance over style.
(+) About 150 levels, every handful of which introduces a basic concept before steadily ramping up its complexity
(+) Approachable challenge for those just looking to finish, but getting 5 stars on each level will firmly test completionists
(+) Quick restarts encourage retries, while bite-sized levels tempt you to play just one more
(-) Starts off a bit slow
(-) Occasional lag / cursor jitter can be infuriating (especially in later levels - consider lowering graphics settings)
Paid $1.99 — Would pay $5.00
chill short game, lots of levels and overall pretty good level design, only a few ones i really disliked
Fantastic. Truly minimalistic, but challenging and addictive.
I checked it because I'm a fan of the VR games from these devs. So I got it in a sale. I didn't expect to like it so much, but sometimes you need a simple game that offers the right amount of challenge, and this was ideal.
The levels do get progressively more difficult, but so far it's manageable. A nice challenge.
Reminds me a bit of Hyperdot. I like that there's games like this.
To put this game simply, you play as a blue shape and outshapes other blue shapes. But these blue shapes have tiny blue shapes inside of them. If you want to get all 5 golden shapes for that level, you have to collect all the tiny shapes inside the big blue shapes by outshaping the big blue shapes before the green shape up top shrinks too much. As you outshape more big blue shapes, a new big blue shape gets shapened with even more tiny blue shape. But you gotta watch out, as there are other non-blue shapes that are trying to outshape you, who is trying to outshape the blue shapes. So you gotta stop the other shapes from outshaping you by dodging, or finding ways to outshape the shapes that are trying to outshape you who is trying to outshape the big blue shapes with all the tiny blue shapes.
This game is really minimalistic.
Quick Description:
-Ellipsis is a strong entry into the often overlooked minimalist avoid'em top down genre. Ellipsis delivers across the board through solid mechanics, innovative levels, and not overstaying it's welcome.
What's Good:
-Beautiful HUB world that is a treat to look at. This is the type of thing that too often overlooked, but makes a big difference as being able to have something nice to look at inbetween every level is a real bonus.
-Well thought out color scheme that is easy to learn. Everything blue is good and everything red is bad, it's as simple as that. Bright colors light up a pitch black background that makes every level really pop visually.
-Really solid difficulty curve that slowly ramps up the challenge but never pushes the player beyond their capabilities.
-$5 is so cheap for a game of this quality, can't beat the asking price.
-The star system based on speed is a great way to have different difficulties set in the game w/o alienating a single player. The 5 star mastery is quite a challenge on the later levels but feels very rewarding.
-Good amount of content, easy to get 3-4 hrs in on your first playthrough and if you want to get 5 stars on every level, that will add several more hours of content and mastery.
Could Use a Few Changes:
-It's a bit of a one trick pony. Touch every blue circle and get to the finish line while avoiding pretty much everything. It doesn't really go beyond those barriers. This would be a bigger issue if the price tag were higher, but it is something to take into consideration.
-The black background w/ bright neon colors is becoming a bit overused these days in platformers and top down games. It works well here, but I'd like to see future devs consider alternatives in the avoid'em genre.
-The second to last level which is essentially the final boss felt like the only true difficulty spike and was a bit frustrating. This really is a small gripe in a really pleasant experience, but I think it's worth noting.
-Not a ton or replayability once you've gotten 5 stars on all levels.
Thoughts:
-Ellipsis is a game that does everything really well, and it's hard to find many problems. Arguably the biggest problem is that it doesn't really excel in any area or push the genre forward. Fortunately, this game is just plain fun. I sat down and finished it in two sittings, so that tells you how easy it was for me to just keep playing levels. Ellipsis is a solid choice for those looking for a fun experience that isn't too stressful.
Consensus:
-Solid Game (Tier 3 and makes up 35% of my reviews). $5 is such a steal for a game of this quality. Don't let the minimalist aesthetic and the cheap price fool you, this is a well crafted minimalist avoid'em top down game that should not be overlooked.
It's like one of those move your mouse to move type games but this one is way longer than any of the ones I have played and it has custom levels and overall it's just a good game to play. 67/100
Very pleasing to the eye game, reminds me of World's Hardest Game. If you like that game try this one out.
Fantastic game!
I haven't seen this much creativity in level design since playing a Mario game. Seriously. And the graphics are beautiful! Kind of reminds me a bit of Octohedron. A lot of fun. I really like how the world map slowly reveals itself as you solve the puzzles.
A couple small points that it could improve on. First off, the game offers controller support, but it's not possible to get 5 stars on each level using it. Your puck just moves to slowly while using a controller to cover the distances needed. Kind of sucks because the controller is my weapon of choice.
It's also pretty clear that this game would benefit from a touch screen. The mouse works pretty good too, but sometimes I felt like the puck wasn't quite lined up with my mouse's movements. It's not game breaking, but takes a bit of getting used to.
Finally, the times on some of the levels could stand to be tweaked. Some levels give you a ridiculous amount of time to get the full 5th star, but others are so tight it's like you're fighting for every millisecond.
Aside from these points, I would strongly recommend this game. It's a lot of fun to play and fits well into the times when you only have 5 or 10 minutes.
I'm surprised there aren't more games like this. It's simple, addictive, and fun. I wish it was a bit more challenging but I recommend it (on sale).
My only real complaints are how it can be extremely infuriating at different parts, and the movement can seem glitchy. It's only really the worst if you try to 5 star levels, though.
OH YES
Ellipsis to me was a great game to be played in short bursts. Play a few levels, cause they're all really short levels, and once I felt like I was hitting a wall I would step away for a few minutes then come back later. Most of the time that would lead to me completing that level I was having a hard time with. If I was still having trouble I would try one of the different levels that branch off from the path I was on and progress from there. Overall I really enjoyed my time with Ellipsis. It's got a cool "Geometry Wars" like style to it with simple controls and levels that will definitely challenge you. Plus there's a level creator that will let you put your games on the Steam Workshop if you're into that.
I played this game on iOS, and absolutely loved it. The PC version took a little getting used to with the mouse, but the controls are still great and there are some new levels that weren't in the iOS game. Also, the level editor looks awesome - I think that's going to be a lot of fun! Because levels don't take a long time and you can pause as soon as you let go of the button, this game is great for those days where you're doing something really monotonous at home and want something entertaining to break it up.
I love the minimal but vibrant look of Ellipsis. The sound effects are dope too. Its challenging as well as weirdly calming in the same time. It’s a great game with a great idea behind it!
Ellipsis is a beautifully designed minimalist puzzler which demands fast mouse skills too - highly recommended!
