I believe rust McClain to be one of the greatest gaming characters of all time
If you enjoyed Inscryption. you'll enjoy this too. It's short, it's interesting and it's fun.
Also the soundtrack is unbelievably good
The Hex is the first game I ever went out of my way to get all achievements on and I now beg nearly all of my friends to play it. If you've played Pony Island and/or Inscryption before, PLEASE give The Hex a shot. It has truly elevated my appreciation for these games.
very fucking good game, was a really great time have fun with reggie
This should be required reading before playing Inscryption
yeah its a good game especially if you love mysteries
This review contains spoilers for The Hex.
In the late 2010s and early 2020s, Creepypasta boomed with zoomers. Why? Well, it's a way for kids to experiment with their own imaginations by creating stuff like that. Also, humans enjoy being scared. Simple.
However, if you've actually engaged with the popular stuff, you might notice something: None of the popular stuff is actually good. Or scary. The motives of the monsters are "they're a demon ghost haunting a Sega game under the guise of the mascot. Why? Because they're evil and they love killing and torturing people." Yeah, really scary if you hate torture as a concept. The concept fell flat from the beginning. The scares are too blatant, the concepts are too flat, and the characters lack depth and dimension. The little boy playing the game and being haunted by the scary demon is nothing more than a name the monster shouts at you during a chase scene. The clichés are used over and over.
This is why I find The Hex really interesting, because it looks at Creepypasta and raises the question, "why?" Why would a video game character want to kill a human besides the easy answer of "they're evil and they love to kill people"?
The Hex is not a scary game, I'd say. There are scary moments and there are tense moments, but I wouldn't quite classify it as a typical horror game. Like its preceding game Pony Island, it directly examines the common clichés of Creepypasta, such as "my cartridge is haunted by Satan1!!" and "the game characters are sentient and murderous!" and gives the characters and concepts depth and reason. I would say The Hex is a Creepypasta done right. A thoroughly underrated game in the Daniel Mullins trilogy (hopefully soon to be a quadrilogy!) that deserves the attention and love Inscryption got from a modern audience.
amazing game like really amazing i love the how the gameplay completely changes for each character's story and the story itself is also like really good. i love this game and i love daniel mullins :3
An interesting game! I really enjoyed the storytelling on this one. Makes you see the perspective of a game developer and the reality of giving up some creative freedom to make something entertaining for others. I recommend if you enjoy playing with a variety of character and game types. Who truly is the murderer of creativity?! haha.
awesome story, daniel mullins is the goat!!<3
Super Weasel Kid is one of the greatest triumphs of indie gaming in our modern year. With precise controls, spectacular level design, and a theme that ignites a passion of pure unadulterated joy within our hearts, we are shown an experience that transcends what it means to be a game. It may not have the most cutting edge graphics, or the longest playtime, but it has one thing that no other AAA SLOP will ever have: A pure love and devotion to the craft of interactive digital media. Thank you Lionel Snill, Thank you for making the greatest game of 2013.
Very good game.
A fun story. Not really as good as any of the other Daniel Mullin's game, as the differing gameplays generally feel a bit clunky rather than truly adding to the experience, but the story is a lot of fun to unfold with some good surprises and twists, as well as a good setting.
Funny, smart game with enjoyable characters and inventive use of its premise! A quick play but absolutely worth the money.
This game is amazing. I played Inscryption, then Pony Island, and lastly The Hex. If you like Inscryption, the Hex is a lot more similar than Pony Island. I absolutely love this game, and the creativity behind it. It's very hard to review any of these games without spoiling them, but this game is so worth playing. The Hex will forever be in my top ten games!!
If you enjoyed Daniel Mullins “Inscription,” this game shares many of the same elements including meta commentary on games and game design, unsettling atmosphere and an engaging mystery at its core. Definitely recommend.
As an aside, I played this game on a Steam Deck and the mouse controls were frustrating at times. Definitely recommend having a mouse and keyboard for this game!
It's like if Frog Fractions and Evoland had a baby, and that baby grew up to be a shady teenager that belongs to a cult and makes everyone hold their children close.
Great game. If you liked Inscryption, you'll like The Hex.
This is an experience I feel most people need. I won't even explain the game. Just give it a chance. it is worth the ride!
As many, i came here from inscription. This is a very different game, but it is also about metagaming and breaking the fourth wall. In any case, it delivers.
Love this game so much! Daniel Mullin's makes such lore-rich games with so many different styles and gameplays. He's definitely my favorite creator
I'm bad at writing reviews and it's really hard to put into words why I like this game so much. Definitely a MUST play if you enjoyed Pony Island and Inscryption, and I recommend this game to anyone that enjoys a good story.
It's short, but I think that's appropriate. It was fun to go through and explore new and fresh ideas. However, what really makes them shine is how they were presented in the story. There were a few moments where the game changes, and the soundtrack slams in at just the right time, and the characters react to it, and it sets the vibes so well, and it was done in such a memorable way I think about it weeks later and go "wow, that moment was really cool."
If you're thinking about picking it up, do it!
this game is soo good like the story the gameplay just everthing i cann just recomend it
Daniel Mullins is a goddamn genius. The gameplay might feel slow at times, but stick with it. This is a one-of-a-kind experience.
It's really good, made me chuckle a few times, shocked me a few times... It's definitely worth picking it up on sale, I would say it's worth full price since I really enjoyed it. But I can't make that guarantee for everyone.
While not as good as Mullins next game, this is the game that started his: "defies" what a video game can be theming. If you enjoy video games as a medium, give this a try. It'll re-shape your perspective on what this medium can be...
After playing Pony Island and then this, it seems that while the developer has aspirations for being an author of stories, he does not have any intention of making a fun or enjoyable game. No, I am not going to play 30 minutes of a terrible unfun cartoon platformer, even if it is supposed to be terrible and unfun on purpose.
Incredibly unique game. I played Inscryption before The Hex and I think I liked Inscryption better, because the actual card game was really fun and there was a lot of replayabilty especially with Kaycee's mod, but all that means is that Daniel Mullins in my eyes is getting better since Inscryption is newer. The Hex is awesome. Really weird trip, really cool, interesting lore to dive into on youtube videos since I'm too dumb to explore it properly myself.
From the dev that bought you Pony Island and Inscryption, this is the second game in the 'series'. Not quite as clever as those 2 games, but still some fun, 4th-wall breaking stuff as expected.
You play as various npc characters from some now defunct games from a now defunct publisher. Each character plays as a different genre. Have to solve a mystery. As expected, 4th-wall breaking mirth follows. Npt as ground breaking as Pony Island and not as fully realised as Inscryption, but still unique fun.
Really great story with great game mechanics. A must play
Meta games which have chapters that rely heavily on platformer skills are generally lost on me. Because I do not have those skills. Even though I am a fan, Daniel. Just can not.
played this after Pony Island which I played after Inscryption. holy shit. the homage this game pays to classics of the video game genre is amazing, I had a blast from start to finish playing and being surprised by what the game had in store for that particular game style, whether that be a strange new diversion, or expansion on already amazingly implemented familiarities. the story is simple in actuality yet when it came full circle I couldn't help but lean back in my chair with my jaw fully open, comprehending the events and finale I had just gone through. overall, everything in this game is executed exceptionally and I cant recommend it enough to anyone who just wants a breath of fresh air in the quite over saturated gaming scene we see ourselves stuck in nowadays. It is most definitely a game that still holds up all these years later, and what I would say is a must buy for any gamer, Inscryption/Pony Island fan, or not.
this game is so good , play blind that's worth your every second
Just like Daniel Mullins' other games, The Hex follows a certain formula with its storytelling. And just like Daniel Mullins' other games it manages to have fun game play. It's great, I really loved the Hex and not for its innovative storytelling but that it was actually really fun to play.
absolutely fantastic, played it through in one sitting, and i was hooked the whole time, no breaks. It's 1 AM, i should go to sleep now... but theres a little more hexxing to be done outside of the game.
The story comes together neatly at the end, and each game is interesting enough to keep you playing until the next big story plot point. Very good, often on sale for two dollars. Lots of replay-ability and secrets.
It's a Daniel Mullins game... if you know what that means then you probably own it already.
If you don't, then just go on and freaking buy it.
It's a Daniel Mullins game..
A fun, genre-hopping storyline, but it's a bit short. Recommend to pick it up on sale.
This is like- fucking fantastic, 10/10. But if you don't like story games maybe not, it has a lot of minigames throughout some combat, puzzles, if your the type of person who likes to play through a bunch of small games rather then do one thing this is for you, and honestly even if not, give it a shot.
有点意思的游戏开发者视角meta游戏,但有些部分玩起来难免教条而无聊,此外美术也是真的丑。
Much like Daniel's other games, best played blind with little information. The less you know, the more surprising and fun his games are, this is no exception.
However, to put it in as spoiler-free a way i can - 'what if ufo 50 had fewer games, but with LORE' is a good amusing but accurate descriptor of this game. Give it a go if you enjoyed Pony Island and Inscryption!
The game is definitively unique, I'll give it that. I decided to play this after loving another game of this developer, (Inscription, as you may have guessed) but (ironically, cosnidering the meta-narrative of the game) didn't like this one as much. Still, since its short, I'd say its worth playing.
This game has simple controls, a lot of variation, tricky puzzles and an intriguing storyline that will make you sympathize/antagonize with the characters in it. It is not too hard to play but the storyline keeps you going. I think there are also some gimmicks that can be discovered, though I personally didn't unlock anything besides the main Storyline and did only one run so far, not sure if I will go for another one.
This diddy party had almost no crimes commited.
10/10 mastapiece
The Hex is a certainly an interesting game first going into it, it doesn't reveal quite *exactly* what it is unlike Daniel Mullins other games of Inscryption and Pony Island. Honestly though, it uses this edge to an excellent advantage. It sets up a mystery about what on earth is going to happen in this shady inn and delivers on the mystery pretty well, with the player never quite sure what to expect next as they jump from perspective to perspective of the eccentric cast of characters at the inn.
Speaking of perspectives; jumping between these perspectives is easily the highlight of the game, with each character and their story being enjoyable to both play and follow along to. Slowly piecing together the overarching puzzle that connects everything is really fun, and the game has some genuinely good twists that I didn't see coming. The Hex also has the some of the most enjoyable meta aspects when compared to Pony Island and Inscryption, given it's essentially a game about video games and thus it's meta spiels and 4th wall breaks feel earned rather than awkward.
I do think that the art style doesn't look the greatest at times (some parts genuinely reminded me of Troll Face Quest) and that the finale happens way too quickly for my liking, which does bring the game down a bit.
Overall, I'd give it a 9/10. The Hex was really enjoyable to play through and certainly unique in everything it bought to the table; would highly recommend for those with a liking to meta elements!
very creative concept, manages to have a new idea for each of the stories in a way that kept me surprised, a little bit too long, find myself really not enjoying the latter stories, but none of it is a deal breaker
The second of the Daniel Mullins games, when I first played Pony Island I didn't even know who the guy was. I went to check out the developer and lo and behold I had all his games! What fun. Currently working on Inscryption to top everything off. The Hex, of course, was excellent in every way.
underrated game. the beginners guide shade is the funniest thing that i've seen this year, and i saw trump get elected, so.
I love the story and gameplay I do think it has issues in story it being a weird ending to it but I like a game going over topics about games and greed and how it ruins games a must play 8/10
The gameworks really well to create an unirving atmosphere while still keeping the gamefunand exciting. Though I am still sadover what happened to Mr. Shrewd.
Only played this because it comes for free when you buy 'Inscryption', but I was totally taken aback by the quality of the game's gameplay(s) and storyline. I'm really impressed. This game, had it been released with some better marketing and advertisement spending ("The Hex" is a terrible name for a game btw), would have been extremely successful in my estimation. Definitely recommend buying on or off sale. Totally worth it. Also, the game has tons of secrets in it as well, so if you have some extra free time you can play this game multiple times to unlock the easter eggs and secret achievements and whatchamacallit.
