Painted Legend is a rather badly made 3D rendered 2D platformer brawler with a kitschy "your hand drawn notebook has come alive!" theme. You control an averagely hand-drawn knight and fight various hand drawn zombies with a backdrop of a notebook full of graph paper. The art is pretty mediocre, and unfortunately the art is the best thing about the game. It's all downhill from there.
One important note is that even though this is an amateur project, it does seem to be sincerely and genuinely made. I couldn't find any flipped assets, plagiarism or any other kind of insincere actions from the developer, but unfortunately genuine intentions alone are not enough to produce a brilliant PC gaming experience.
From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.
The controls and game handling are notably very clunky, sluggish and unsmooth here. It's janky and unsatisfying to play... and any experienced gamer will tell you, the handling, responsiveness and general gameplay feel of the control scheme must be well polished for this kind of game to succeed. Unfortunately, this is something the developer seems to have phoned in, with little to no apparent gameplay testing. They dropped the ball on this one.
The controls can't be customised, which will be an annoyance for many, but it can also render the game unplayable for differently-abled gamers, left handed gamers or gamers using AZERTY or other international keyboard layouts.
Some of the defects in the game can be attributed to the choice of using the video game library/engine, CopperCube. It's rarely used, because it's arguably worse than construction kits like GameMaker Studio, RPGMaker and Clickteam Fusion, but it's also much harder to work with. Despite this, CopperCube has very limited capabilities, which go some way to explaining the poor quality of the game. Just as you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear, you can't make a great video game if you use a terrible engine.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
You don't have to take my word about how bad the game is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. Painted Legend has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the game absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for dying (something that playing this game will definitely make you want to do), trivial to achieve, but less than 4 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the game. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.
Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the game. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 4 percent of players bothered playing the game for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this game to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this game? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game.
That tells us people only really bought this game for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.
So, should you buy this game?
Painted Legend has the almost scam-like price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "Mass Effect", "Left 4 Dead 2" or the "Tomb Raider" remake. Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.
I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.

I do like the game, though some of the controls don't work as they should, you'll find spots where your toon just can't jump, also times where you take damage regardless if the enemy was hitting or not or even if you're near it when it does hit.. times where you can bunny hop all around them and never get hit.. I do like the graphics, I got 1 and 2 for under 4 bucks so i can't complain, + all the achievements are like 1% so I like rare achievements..It Needs work, but if you can catch it on sale I'd say snatch it up just to add some rare achievements to your account (or if you're like me and did the training in Halo Inf and embarrassed that a guns tutorial achievement was rare and just want it off your showcase)
Really nice adventure, good working remoteplay 2 players co-op game! i rate this 8/10 keep going!
i liked the game but the character does seem a bit slow in his movements and the simple gameplay may deter some people from playing it.
this game had i fun and different idea to it then other platformers but it just wasn't executed well enough. For example the controls to move are WASD then you attack with F (the hitboxes are trash too). all around if you cant get this game for free don't get it.
(follow my curator page GenXPlayers for more retro and indie reviews)
The 2.5D graphics had a lot of potential for greatness, but whoever had the idea of using that squared paper effect should be fired, it makes the game ugly.
The game is a long list of things being almost passable, but not . With just a bit of work and polish you could probably turn this t***rd into a gold nugget, so let's hope the developer perseveres and improves over time.
But right now it's just at the level of an amateur project.
Halloween extra level doesn't work right, and I don't have time to look for the glitch the dev probably wants me to exploit.
The game is fixed to WASD controls, which means it's very difficult to play if you're not on a qwerty keyboard. Good news is : the controls are so bad it's probably as difficult on a qwerty keyboard!
The game is coherent and finisheable (provided you can exploit the jumping glitch), so I can't decently put a thumb down, but don't buy it over a dollar.
Horrible jumping mechanics are utterly unforgiable for a platformer, especially one made in 2016.
You float through platforms, you run slowly and painfully, can not attack and run at the same time.
I wasted painful miunutes on this game, the only plus side to this being that I am now those minutes closer to death.
A death which can not come soon enough, since having experienced this game I have not only lost my will to live and lost $1.09 CAD.
I will see you in hell, developer. A hell which will be far more enjoyable than this game.
Painted Legend is an Indie platformer that revolves around a drawn fairy tale world come alive on grid paper. The graphics are simple but pretty endearing and that combined with a gameplay that is forgiving its a game for most people to play and do well in. The controls are done on a-s-d-w and f as there currently is no controller support. There are 9 different characters combined where the majority needs to be unlocked but with little to no gameplay difference from what i could tell. Besides of that there is two skills that can be bought by collecting ingame coins. The game has 3 modes campaign, Halloween Quest 2016 and an easter egg pixelated and simplified old school version of the game. Overall i liked the game but the character does seem a bit slow in his movements and the simple gameplay may deter some people from playing it. The game has 17 acheievements and all are doable in a fairly short ammount of time. I think for a game that costs 1 euro its actually a pretty decent game as i had my fun with it for a few hours but with a bit of tweaks and changes it could certainly also have been a better game. Ill rate it 6/10 in its genre.
This game is wonderfull specially the art and the music! :D
While the style of the game is pretty decent, the rest is pretty bad. First of all the music is horrible. There's music that gets on your nerves quickly and then there's the soundtrack to this game. It's atonal and the rhythm doesn't match the 'melody' at all. To top it all off the controls are atrocious. You only have keyboard controls that aren't rebindable and the attack button is F while you move around with WASD.
There's an okay idea in the game somewhere, but the execution is very bad.
