About the Game
Shadows of Adam is a classic JRPG fan’s dream come true. Shadows of Adam brings a compelling story, unique fast-paced battle system and modernized visuals to a beloved genre.Tucked away from the outside world by the impenetrable haze of the Misty Woods, the village of Adam has mostly lived in peace since the days of the Wraith War. Magic, the dark power that fueled that war has vanished. But darkness is descending once more and Adam's legendary hero, Orazio, is no more.
10 years ago he left without explanation and never returned, leaving his son and adopted daughter to wrestle with the dark secret he left behind—a secret that must now be revealed if the children hope to save both Adam and their departed father, though its revelation could unhinge the world.
- Compelling Character Driven Story: Shadows of Adam’s story is one with deep narrative and an interesting plot. The story revolves around 4 main characters: Asrael, Kellan, Curtis and Talon.
- A Strategic AP Management Battle System: AP is restored between each round of battle automatically and through defeating enemies. This allows a unique attrition system that encourages skill use and fast combat.
- Beautiful Visuals: Shadows of Adam features beautifully modernized visuals inspired by classic JRPGs of the SNES-era.
- Original Soundtrack With Over 44 Tracks: An original soundtrack by Tyler Mire that’s inspired by music from the genre's greatest games. This soundtrack includes unique themes for each area and character and has an emphasis on strong melody and emotional connection.
It’s an honor for us to provide Shadows of Adam in its entirety to newcomers, and of course to our tens of thousands of Kickstarter supporters, followers and fans finally getting their full course meal! This game is our tribute to an industry which has consistently rewarded its followers for decades by offering classic after classic to keep even the strongest and most unique RPG urges satiated.
While gameplay formulas and graphics have steadily raised standards across many genres over the years, even making older games in some genres downright unplayable, JRPG classics remain timeless, because of a secret all JRPG fans should know too well. It isn’t necessarily about the gameplay and graphics that go into the game, but rather the HEART and SOUL poured into it which goes on to beat through each heartwarming moment and pulse through every gut-wrenching ride.
While Shadows Of Adam does boast spiffy new graphics, and awesome new gameplay, we at Something Classic know just how important that heart and soul bit really is. That’s why we poured every inch of our heart and soul into this game -down to the very last red pixel!- and you can bet that our thousands of fans and hundreds of testers have put in equal effort towards making this game not only a reality, but also a success!
Thank you, and may your journey through Shadows Of Adam be as exciting as ours.

This game gets what classic jrpgs were about.
No combat gimmicks, short dialogues, silly sometimes serious, dungeons with more than just walkin' n' fightin'.
What it improves over classic games:
You actually gotta think during combat
Encounters visible on field
Pretty much every ability has its use
Where it drops the ball:
In the very end of the game you've had enough block pushing puzzles and the normal encounters you kinds figured them out already so they don't offer much.
But that's like 15 minutes away from the end of the game so it's no big deal.
My favorite thing about the game is a small one but small things matter. When you revisit places you've been to before and you discover new side quests and items.
Short review after finishing the game including DLC: its simple if you love older JRPG then this is the game for you. For everyone else it can be enjoyable but there are some flaws with the game.
Pros:
- Pure nostalgic feel from the pixel art to the music and gameplay they nailed their main goal (this is the main reason you buy the game)
- Average main story that is uplifted by flashbacks from our heroes and some very charming or funny npcs (Lorabeth the witch or 2 rum loving guards who need theraphy come to mind)
- Decent amount of sidequesting before final dungeon
- DLC biggest strenght is that you can now customize your artifacts and give them different stats or abilities
- Good and sometimes challenging puzzles that can be easily reset if you do something wrong
- Varied enemies and bosses fun and challenging (with one exception which i will mention at Cons)
- New game plus for added replayability
Cons:
- Rough around the edges (music loops strangely, your cursor doesnt dissapear when you start the game, small skill cast menu means for lower spells you need to move down slowly to select them, takes to much time)
- DLC Dungeon is torture (not beacuse of the puzzles those are fun, beacuse of mirage/dodging mobs a broken skills which against it you only have few answers, even less when those same mobs silence or curse you meaning its challenging in the wrong way...pure torture but i still finished it...at great expense...)
- Sometimes the dialoge feels very childish but bearable
If the asking price is too steep wait for a sale otherwise still a fun game, looking forward to their next one.
JRPGs often get bogged down in unnecessary complexity and padding, Shadows of Adam stands out as a beacon of concise and engaging storytelling. This retro-style gem is a testament to the power of focused game design, delivering a narrative that is both emotionally resonant and expertly paced. From the moment you start playing.
Every scene, every conversation, and every plot twist serves a purpose, propelling the story forward with a sense of urgency and momentum.
The game's combat system is turn-based and strategic, with a unique AP system that rewards careful planning and execution. Battles are challenging but never feel overwhelming, and the sense of satisfaction you get from developing strats for bosses is great!
There is not any excessive exposition or tedious backtracking. The game's world is meticulously crafted, with a clear sense of history and lore that feeds the narrative. No fetch quests for the sake of time padding, no "oh he's in the OTHER castle" bull, just good proper story and gameplay.
Good game
This is a simple short RPG that i believe targets a younger audience as some of the writing/ conversations between the characters are kiddy. Nevethless, i am surprise that a normal mobs can be quite hard and you cannot keep using the same attackes for every mobs. Can be finished in less than 20 hrs if you did not go around performing extra stuffs. Purchase on a sale. I give it a 7/10.
I'm pleasantly surprised by this one. I expected a mostly by-the-numbers retro JRPG but what I got was a fun modern spin on the tried-and-true classics, with a much more detailed and complex story than I anticipated, and one that is both familiar and fresh and isn't afraid to be surprisingly dark at times but still retain a sense of humor.
The QOL features and modern storytelling, as well as the pretty great graphics that take advantage of the pixel art without being simplistic or flat-looking, were very refreshing after having recently played a couple of old games that felt clunky and outdated because of their age.
Edit: After finishing the base game and about half of the DLC, I'd recommend this to anyone who likes old school JRPG's with modern features. It was a fun adventure that didn't overstay its welcome, and my only complaints are that it was a bit too linear and that the ending was a bit too simple and I would've liked a bit more detail. It was like an old early SNES era ending with not much detail except basically "Yay! We won!" But those are minor gripes and the game is solid.
