All-time classic, no explanation needed. Just play it and enjoy the ride!
A versão Retro Remix Revue da Secret of the Forest me ajudou a passar no vestibular, minha relação de amor com esse jogo começa por aí.
Great classic game. It is still fun for me.
The game does crash every 10 - 30 minutes for me. I do not know why.
It could be a setting issue. Luckily I can save frequently
If you're a fan of JRPG, and love completions, this is one of the best games you could ever play. Multiple endings to chase after, dozens of boss fights, multitude of extra content after the final boss. The greatest of JRPG ever created by the people behind Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Dragon Ball.
I've gone 30 years hearing about how this is the greatest game of all time and I'm a failure for never having played it. So I expected this to be a life changing experience that would fundamentally alter me as a person and leave me on the path to enlightenment.
It didn't do that, but it's not the game's fault that its fan base is insufferable. A very good classic 90s JRPG.
One of the best JRPGs to come from the SNES. This version was broken until the Steam release, every Playstation version was just the PS1 version emulated with ALL THE LOAD TIME INCLUDED. This is the definitive way to play CT. The performance of the SNES version with the cutscenes and added features from the PS1 version minus the "LOADING".
The Steam version brings a few handy quality-of-life updates. Notably the auto-battle feature is a game-changer — especially for grinding or replays. It helps the pace without taking away the strategy for hard fights.
Positives:
Engaging time-travel storyline with multiple endings
Memorable characters and amazing soundtrack
Auto-battle feature is super helpful
Updated UI and clean visuals
Tons of replay value
Negatives:
Some UI/menu elements still feel a little clunky on PC
Occasional small bugs (nothing game breaking)
That said, these are minor issues in an otherwise phenomenal experience. If you’ve never played Chrono Trigger - do it. And if you have — do it again.
Best RPG I've ever played. I missed out on playing this in 1995, so I only just finished this now. I woke up thinking about this game while I was playing it because I wanted to find out what happens to the characters. SO GOOD.
Its one of the best JRPG of all time. Its just that Nintendo does such a shit job of porting the game I an not even fucking exaggerating.May god bless whoever is trying to play PC port of old games legally in BIG 2025.
For years a heard people say that Chrono Trigger is one of the best game ever made and i aways thought its was just the nostalgia talking, but now i've played the game and i can say my own opinion:
THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES EVER MADE!!
Thank you for the art, Akira Toriyama.
Despite the fact that this came out during a time where I already played game I have never picked it up before as such I am lacking the nostalgia I guess, since to be very honest I find it lacking in comparison to many others of its genre. Neither the music, the characters nor the story ever left the mid-tier for me. The gameplay and battles are fun though. I also didnt finish it, because it seems in order to beat the final boss you have to grind all optional missions and I am just not interested enough in those storylines, not engaged enough to do more of those battles. Its certainly fine and I would recommend it full price, it just never really got me.
TLDR: A total package of excellent music, art, and simple, yet fun, gameplay. 30 years in and CT is still easily worth your time investment for a great adventure with memorable characters.
PROS:
➕Awesome animations
➕Music
➕FUN gameplay
➕Combat system is simple, yet engaging
NEUTRALS:
🔹Achievements are only for completing the game + Requires multiple completes for all achievements
CONS:
➖Different timelines can be confusing where to go
➖Positional-based techs with no ability to re-position
➖Restrictive techs mean that some characters are much more useful than others (i.e anyone with a heal is better)
Content (Game world/Narrative) – [8/10]
The game world, like other SNES RPGs, consist of two parts - world map and zone map. The intriguing thing about CT here is how with the time elements are implemented, it makes the game world feel so much deeper than it is. Final Fantasy tries to make vast worlds, but without a lot of depth, CT has a smaller world, but you visit each area in different time periods which makes you witness a lot of history. Furthermore, your actions impact the future timelines, adding another layer of player enagement. I love the cause and effect aspect.
The narrative is good, not amazing, but indeed one of the better non-laconic narratives of the SNES era.
Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – [8/10]
Very fun turn-based style. Simple mechanics where each character has their designated moveset. Equipment is generally boring stat upgrades with a few exciting pieces towards the end. Combat is mostly physical attacks, but after you unlock magic, there are enemies that are much weaker to magic than physical and vice versa. I like how with magic, there’s not a huge emphasis on elemental weakness unlike Final Fantasy. In CT, the weakness is either physical or magical and maybe a small ~20% bonus to an elemental type.
Fights are not random battles and occur after you bump into an enemy within the world.
Difficulty is generally pretty easy. There is less of an emphasis on grinding for levels and power and more about just playing through the story.
Graphics (Quality/Technical) – [9/10]
I’ll say that despite a ~30+ year old game, this thing looks amazing. The animations alone are just phenomenal. This has to be in the top 3 best pre-Playstation generation looking games of all time.
From a technical standpoint, I didn’t notice any bugs. I do wish there was a way to return to the title menu without closing the game though.
i9-13900KF | RTX 4090 | 64GB RAM | 1440p @ 240hz | Windows 11 installed on SSD
Audio – [9/10]
Stellar music. Each zone was great and really played into the fun adventure theme.
Replay Factor (Longevity) – [3/10]
The only real replay value here is the multiple endings and their relative achievements which, in my opinion, are not worth replaying unless you’re a hardcore fan.
Final Verdict – [9/10]
Chrono Trigger (CT), is often considered the best JRPG of all time. This is my first time playing it and as a huge fan of all things RPG, I had my hopes high. A true testament to the creative ingenuity of CT is that after 30+ years, it's still a wonderfully fun adventure full of mechanics that pretty much defined the genre.
To start off with the negatives, the biggest downside for me was positional combat and that it can be confusing where to go next.
The positional combat is a bit odd. Some of the skills hit enemies in a line extending from a character. Others hit enemies in a circular fashion. There is no way to move either your characters or the enemies, so it's purely by random chance if many of these techs are even worthwhile to ever use.
In regards to the confusing goals, CT is a game that is not very wide, but exceptionally deep. The world map isn’t that big at all compared to other games like FF5/6, but it’s deep in that there are multiple timelines to travel to. It can be challenging to figure out not only where to go next but what timeline to go as well. Like most older JRPGs that lack good direction, a guide is recommended here.
As for the positives, I love the laid-back adventure vibe, and the music/artstyle.
For the adventuring part, unlike SNES Final Fantasy games, CT actually feels like a FUN adventure. What specifically does this mean? Well there is no pressure on levels or grinding. Most fights are never about a numbers check and have some light mechanical puzzles to do, i.e casting fire on a troll to drop his hammer, or lightning on a dragon to lower defense. I loved that I was never required to spend time grinding and could just enjoy the game and story. Furthermore, all combat takes place in the real world with no random encounters. While there are many forced encounters, it is never as annoying as FF can get when you constantly get into combat a thousand times moving from area to area. Even the combat itself is fun and generally easy. I never felt oppressed like in FF when I would constantly get party wiped or the annoying status ailments.
As for the music/artstyle, it's just phenomenal. Every music track is a perfect combination of whimsy, adventure, and some slight comedic undertones. The art style is peak Akira Toriyama (RIP, boss) and full of anime cutscenes that look like a Dragon Ball JRPG. It's just so good and despite having never played CT, somehow fills me with a sense of nostalgia for the 90s-era games.
So, in my opinion, is Chrono Trigger the best JRPG of all time? Probably not, and I’m hesitant to crown a victor here, but Final Fantasy X is pretty high. I do think that CT is the absolute best SNES-era RPG I have ever played. Blows every other FF out of the water, easily.
As such, I definitely recommend picking up this game. 30 years have passed and this is still a joy to play, most importantly a FUN adventure. So many games lose the sense of fun behind balance or difficulty while CT chooses to err on the side of too easy in return for a damn fun game.

Would you yell at me if told you this game stands the test of...TIME
Yeah still great game, fun. 10/10.
I appreciate the developer square enix, given a retro JRPG game like this that is very nostalgic to listen to the soundtrack & the excitement of the cutscene film made by Akira Toriyama. Even though, my happy ending review is 9.8/10 from the main story, side story, lost sanctum, and the last is dimension vortex will do it to find the rest of the other endings to match the goal of achieving 100% as much as possible.
Absolute classic! If you are a fan of JRPG then you should play this game. Great visual also as the art designed by the great Akira Toriyama!
A childhood favorite which still holds up extremely well. Timeless classic.
I tried it.
By today's standards, this is a game that can be played.
I won't say it's the best in the world, because after all, 30 years have passed, and the hardware performance has increased thousands of times. Of course, there are new games with better graphics and music, with the game design at least equivalent level.
But an RPG game, from 30 years ago, is not too uncomfortable to play now, it is smooth and fun, say it can be played, which is enough to explain why this game is often ranked 1st.
If I could play a game of this level 20 years ago, I can't imagine how addicted I would be.
It has a unique flavor to play, which reminds me of FFXII
One of the best RPG from a lifetime! I`ve played this game since I was a kid and I still enjoy it as those past day. I give this game a MASTERPPIECEFROMHISTORY/10
I have revisited games I played in my childhood before only to be disappointed to find out age has not been kind and not even nostalgia could save it for me. Chrono Trigger is different.
I played this for months as a kid on SNES and I believe it has the power to transcend time (pardon the pun). I do believe modern gamers, especially JRPG fans, will be able to still enjoy this classic.
I had no issue with any bugs/crashes like others mentioned.
This is literally one of the best games of all time. Main themes are about the meaning of life, the passage of time and your effect on others...
I am in my late 20s and replaying this game hits quite different.
It's Chrono Trigger. It's a legend for a reason. Perfect pacing, perfect tone, perfect game.
In 8 hours the game has crashed about 5 times. Did not really lose any progress, but had a close call. If you are going to get this remember to save A LOT.
Regarding the game, nothing to complain about there. It's one of the best games ever made. Regarding the port their are a couple of issues. I personally hate the DS font they use and replaced it with a mod. I feel like some more in-game customisation would have gone a long way.
They have changed the run button to not only run when holding the button, but also to toggle when you press the button. As it is the cancel button I found myself frequently getting toggled back into run mode and having to toggle back all the time. It is not a massive deal but it is very annoying.
I had one crash to desktop in my 50-hour playthrough. I'm not sure if this was even the fault of the game. Luckily the game auto-saves so often you can only really lose a few minutes if this happens to you, and as I say it only happened once to me.
The additional content is a slog. Particularly the lost dimension part. You do, however, get an additional ending which answers some questions. There are also very high-powered weapons and rewards in the dimensional vortexes.
Would highly recommend, have a look at mods if you don't like the interface.
A classic JRPG from the 90's involving time travel, fun characters and a surprisingly poignant story. The late, great Akira Toriyama's iconic art style is lovingly adapted into a pixel style with detailed environments. Combat is simplistic but satisfying and you can toggle between active or wait modes to suit your play style. The game also features a large amount of different endings depending on which conditions you meet.
It's Chrono Trigger. If you havent heard by now, its one of the most influential RPGs of its time. The composer was gonna quit until they let him work on this game.
Im not gonna wank off Chrono Trigger more, if your interested, play it. Its a great Jrpg that holds up and doesnt take 100hrs. It has a big cast of likable characters, good art.
If your up to the task, you can mod it with better art too. Give it a shot. Not the best port, but a good one.
2nd Best way to play. imo, 1st is DS port
There are great works of art, and then there's the Sistine Chapel.
There are great games, and then there's Chrono Trigger.
Sorry, but this POS isn't worth the $4 I paid. After almost 6 hours of gameplay, it crashed and I can't load up a saved game. Worthless.
Pretty wonderful. Brilliant storyline, amazing soundtrack. Unlike most JRPGs, this one does not have random encounters, although this has fixed respawning encounters that are unavoidable which are a massive nuisance in the areas through which you have to go many times.
I do have one major complain, that optional chapter Lost Sanctum was some of the most miserable gaming experiences I've ever had, and ironically it was like like 3-5 times longer than all the other chapters in the game. Seriously, most of the game is super well-paced and does not have any annoying sections, but this whole chapter is just torture, where you have to go back and forth, back and forth 30 or so times from one end of the map to another, then travel through time to the other time era and travel to the end of that map again and you do it again and again and again. That one chapter may be the worst implementation of backtracking and fetch quests I've ever seen in my entire life. And if neverending travel from one end to the other was not enough they put 3 forced enemy encounters within the path which you have to fight every single time you go through... And in some of them they even dared to couple enemies that are fully resistant to elemental damage with the ones who are invulnarable to physical damage which drags those encounters even further. As terrible as that chapter was it still had some good ideas in it, but overall I would not want to play it ever again, and thankfully at least it was side-content and not put in the main story. Luckily, after that, I got back to the rest of the game and it was so awesome that I almost forgot about the dismal times I just had a few hours ago.
Also, it should be mentioned that I experienced some technical issues that were not present on the PS1 version on which I had beaten half of the game or so. Steam version sometimes freezes, it never crashed but the game froze maybe 5-7 times in my whole playtime, luckily by minimizing and resuming it would always get fixed, so I never lost any progress. Another issue is that sometimes the chests do not show what item I just picked up. The information tab is just blank. But these issues are not gamebreaking, even if annoying.
Anyway, when it is good, it is a superb game. The main ending made me feel strong emotions and it ended on a very high note. I do believe that this game deserves its legendary status in the JRPG community, even though I have played very few games of this genre.
8/10
Great game, not stable, and will not get updates. Save point during the masmune quest deleted after it BSOD my whole pc and had to start over. Get it on switch
There is a bug that causes jitter when moving the characters in a diagonal direction.
Absolute masterpiece of a game, wow. Gripping story, amazing characters, fun combat system, top soundtracks and much more. Chrono Trigger... one of the best.
I've played this since Super Nintendo. I also owned this on PS1 which had the cutscenes. Its an extraordinary game, but this port is awful. I mean, Super Nintendo ran this game better. This makes me afraid to buy anymore retro classics ported to the PC, some seems better to emulate (legally). I'm disappointed because I wanted this game on PC as well.
bad port. i've read it used to crash a lot, that has not happened to me durring my 1st playthrough yet. the cut scenes from the ps1 version are a fun touch. this is any dragonball fan's swan song of jrpgs. **edit this port still crashes. only buy this if it is on sale. play the ds version or the original rom avoid this port
It's a good game, but when you play it, the game crashes a lot, and it's a very bad experience, so you have to be very careful when you buy it, i think the company aren't going to fix it.
Sucks that I had to refund after <1 hour due to several random crashes to desktop. I really wanted to play this. Guess I will have to go another route.
This is a subpar port of one of the best paced games in JRPG history. It's still a fantastic game, and well worth playing if this is your only option. It's not bad on the level of some completely broken ports, but it happens to be a port of the mobile game, which is the worst version of one of the greatest games ever created.
This game often goes on sale for sub 7$, and at that price is absolutely value worthy.
cult classic. must play if you like 2D art style with turn based combat
I've had mostly good experiences playing the game so far, aside from the occasional inexplicable crashes.
Cand definitely recommend this if you want to enjoy rejected content from FF7 too, I plan on getting Chrono Cross soon just to see where the story continues from this.
can't recommend this game enough but this steam version is probably my least favorite. I prefer the DS and original SNES versions much better than this. Interface is janky and settings are not easy to toggle.
One of the best games I've ever played. Truly game changing for its time and has aged like fine wine. This Game is a must play for any JRPG fan, or even just any RPG fan in general. I highly Recommend this game.
A true masterpiece. This game was peak RPG and peak SNES when it launched, and to this day it provides a gaming experience which will stick with you forever. I was lucky enough to experience this game as a teen in the 1990's, but I think it has a timeless aspect which allows it to appeal to all generations. Though the game can be beaten in about 25 hours, it rewards repeat playthroughs via its many endings and was the pioneer of the New Game Plus system which has since become a staple of many great games.
TLDR just do yourself a favor and get this game, on sale or otherwise, and enjoy a timeless RPG experience for the ages!
10/10 masterpiece.
Absolutely classic and exemplar of JRPG. The fact that builds are still being discussed today is a testimony of its excellence.
This game is a masterpiece. This was my first time playing the game, and it still holds up after 30 years.
I don't particularly enjoy rpgs and turn-based combat, and yet, this game was worth playing. The turn-base is active by default, which makes it behave like runtime combat instead, and there is no grinding needed. Simply playing the game will lead to the right levels needed for the respective chapter. The story is fantastic, and the gameplay design details complement very well the time travel mechanic.
Having praised the game, I will have to leave a negative review, as the port is subpar.
I had minor bugs, such as weird screen shakes, and the amount of gold and cost of items not showing up on the shop.
This would be fine, although inconvenient, but I also had a few crashes while playing the game. This is expected in games, but I lost my save files twice during crashes. The game has steam cloud, and even the cloud save files were gone.
Turns out this issue happens frequently enough that there is an archive of save files in the community posts. This was the only reason I was able to finish the game, instead of quitting and trying to refund it.
The game is great and worth playing, just not this version.
This is the most balanced JRPG i've ever played, in the sense that there's no bullshit difficulty spikes but the game isn't too easy either. The story won't really blow your mind too much, but the gameplay is just goddamn perfect. The pacing is great and it keeps you hooked.
If you want a more mind blowing story with more 'oh shit' moments, play final fantasy 6 instead. If you want a flawless gameplay experience this is your boi.
The sound controls need to be fixed, because they can't be adjusted in the opening menu, and they can't be lowered enough without outright muting the audio.
While the game itself is kind of incredible... I found the port to be buggy?
I mean, it plays flawlessly when it's actually running, but I've only put a few hours into it and already I've found a few consistent normal gameplay actions that will crash the game guaranteed. Which isn't surprising, if this is indeed a PC port of the mobile game port of the DS remake... I note that all 3 of the previous links in the chain *also* had a lot of complaints about crashes.
I lost about half an hour of progress, but it's really soured me on playing further, especially when I was able to reproduce the crash repeatedly. That tells me it's likely to happen again in the future.
So while the game itself is incredible, I don't know that I can actually recommend you play it this way. A SNES emulator might legitimately be the best option, with a physical DS coming close second I think.
Fantastic upgrade to the SNES version. 10/10
really fun. If you haven't completed the special missions. You should look it up on your second play through.
Absolute classic! The Steam port is very good, but still has stuttering / frame drop issues regularly. Wish they would fix it.
One of the best rpgs i've ever played. Though sometimes a difficult bitch. Still love it though.
