Absolutely classic and exemplar of JRPG. The fact that builds are still being discussed today is a testimony of its excellence.
This game is a masterpiece. This was my first time playing the game, and it still holds up after 30 years.
I don't particularly enjoy rpgs and turn-based combat, and yet, this game was worth playing. The turn-base is active by default, which makes it behave like runtime combat instead, and there is no grinding needed. Simply playing the game will lead to the right levels needed for the respective chapter. The story is fantastic, and the gameplay design details complement very well the time travel mechanic.
Having praised the game, I will have to leave a negative review, as the port is subpar.
I had minor bugs, such as weird screen shakes, and the amount of gold and cost of items not showing up on the shop.
This would be fine, although inconvenient, but I also had a few crashes while playing the game. This is expected in games, but I lost my save files twice during crashes. The game has steam cloud, and even the cloud save files were gone.
Turns out this issue happens frequently enough that there is an archive of save files in the community posts. This was the only reason I was able to finish the game, instead of quitting and trying to refund it.
The game is great and worth playing, just not this version.
This is the most balanced JRPG i've ever played, in the sense that there's no bullshit difficulty spikes but the game isn't too easy either. The story won't really blow your mind too much, but the gameplay is just goddamn perfect. The pacing is great and it keeps you hooked.
If you want a more mind blowing story with more 'oh shit' moments, play final fantasy 6 instead. If you want a flawless gameplay experience this is your boi.
The sound controls need to be fixed, because they can't be adjusted in the opening menu, and they can't be lowered enough without outright muting the audio.
Fantastic upgrade to the SNES version. 10/10
really fun. If you haven't completed the special missions. You should look it up on your second play through.
Absolute classic! The Steam port is very good, but still has stuttering / frame drop issues regularly. Wish they would fix it.
One of the best rpgs i've ever played. Though sometimes a difficult bitch. Still love it though.
Even now, this holds up as one of the best JRPGs of all time!
Pretty much just a PC engine - which seems to work quite reliably - slapped on top of one of the console versions. Original graphics. Though for old SNES players, this does include a few really cool anime cutscenes that I think were from the PS version.
Good length; even as an experienced player, I'm over 20 hours without reaching my first ending. Difficulty is challenging but fair. Classic active battle menu combat. Over the game you'll get to swap between a variety of characters, each unique both in combat style, and in backstory (which matters in this game!).
After a lot of fixes and patches, this has become a really good way to experience one of the best JRPG's ever created. I wouldn't call it the definitive edition, but it is the cheapest option (It goes on sale for $2.50 fairly often!) should you not want to pirate the game. Cannot recommend the game enough.
I was a tad worried replaying this thinking what if the magic is gone with age but nah, this was just as fun. The port itself isnt the best but you got options if its something that bothers you.
True to its name, this one is a timeless classic.
This was my first time finishing Chrono Trigger and i gotta say....get this game! Its amazing! Fantastic characters, backstory, music, and it handles time travel so well. There wasn't much i disliked about this game. Totally recommend if you have never experienced CT!
Story is interesting, characters are fun, and the game play is great. It took some time getting used to the battle mechanics, because I've never played any games with a battle system like this one. Not complaining because it was different. The character designs are cool too. It's like playing a good anime. Overall great game.
Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball's creators met here, and I can't further read... .
P.S.: This wouldn't be the best version, and it may be preferable to experience it at other places... .
Not my first time playing Chrono Trigger. Still such a fantastic game after all these years. The story and world-building, the arts, the soundtracks, and the gameplay mechanics are all top-tier even compared to modern games nowadays. The combined tech systems are rare even for games these days, and the dialogues change depending on characters that you have on your party. I was fully immersed playing it.
The downside is the Lost Sanctum side quest, which I'm also pretty sure was not a part of the original, and it’s the most tedious side quest. I dropped it halfway through because I was sure it wasn’t worth it.
PS. I played this on Steam Deck and it works out of the box without any issues.
ive played this game now for 30 years since it was new on super nintendo and now on pc and it has been a beloved and comfortable old friend. if youve never played please take the time.
This game was played completely on the steam deck with no issues or bugs.
I highly recommend this game. It is very easy to forget this is a game from 1995. The pixel art and music are such a joy, though it was sometimes hard to tell that the enemy you were fighting was a dinosaur. While I enjoyed the story it wasn't what I was expecting out of a JRPG, it felt much less the focus. I was surprised with just how many different eras of time you visit. The combat was also different and unlike many games I have played before, it didn't feel as if my stats mattered so much, the bosses felt more like a puzzle with a certain rhythm of attacks and heals.
Highly enjoyable game and it's easy to see why it's so highly talked about.
This port has improved over time. I would say at launch it was pretty awful and had very little quality issues along with crashes. Now It's functional for the most part. It occasionally crashes from time to time which is still annoying, but it's whatever. If it bothers you that this version crashes I would just emulate it rather than pick this up.
I'm giving you an honest assessment. Love Chrono Trigger, but this port is pretty good for the most part.
Top contender for my favorite game of all time. It's considered a classic absolutely for a reason and I can't recommend it enough if you like JRPGs. For that reason alone I'm giving it a recommend here, but...if you can, I would skip this version and get the original or slightly updated DS version in emulation. This Steam version is an absolutely buggy, poorly-done mess. Basically they just took the already questionable mobile port and lazily slapped it onto PC without really bothering to try to fix anything. It's almost offensive the ways they messed up the graphics (literally bugged sections in a lot of places, muddy filter that just makes the pixel art look smudged rather than actually improved, messed up timing in cutscenes, and more) and the reworked menus and UI elements unnecessarily mess up elements that would have translated to PC just fine (the original character status screen) while barely cleaning up anything from the mobile port. This feels like just a cash grab version.
Great game. Did not buy it sooner because of all the negative comments of the game running badly on PC, but it runs fine. Just make sure to save often. They don't make games like this anymore.
Outstanding JRPG nothing much else to say other than it's a return of an Super Nintendo Entertainment Classic on that system, do remember finishing it on the Nintendo DS version which probably had more features in, it's a shame they didn't do it in this version with the features from the DS game just before the Chrono Cross game for the PlayStation.
It's an hugely recommended game, probably want a 2D-HD remake or HD-2D remake one day, whichever way round however you say it, must buy if you played it back from the middle of the 90's.
Might start replaying this game again soon, little extra note to add is that, it's Chrono Trigger's 30th anniversary next month of March 2025 since the Japanese release, just to warn some folks & fans out there who like Chrono Trigger. Probably one of Square Enix's legendary video games since back on the Super Nintendo & a 2D-HD/HD-2D would be no exception.
imagine if all the original soundtrack from Chrono Trigger as the video game itself had an orchestra arrangement it's more of a HD-2D/2D-HD remake you'll see sprites move more frequently even the monsters or enemies which you need to defeat in order to progress like in the new recent Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D/2D-HD remake back in 2024 even if Square Enix did it around between February to April during this period for the new HD-2D/2D-HD remake of Chrono Trigger depending if they announce or even do it.
What is there to say about this game that hasn't been said already.
its one of my favorite RPGs. The Soundtrack is amazing, the amount of love and passion
that was put into this game. for a game that was made back in the mid 90s its still an incredible
gem, highly suggest getting this game. its always in my top 10 videogames of mine.
one of the first games to introduce new game plus.
Chrono Trigger is a fantastic game that still holds up. Everyone over the age of 15 or so already knows this, so I will instead go into specifics about this port. The game crashes every now and then during transition screens, which is annoying, but the autosave feature that activates at almost every screen transition renders this a mild annoyance at worst. You won't lose more than a minute or two of progress in the vast majority of cases, the worst I ever encountered was a crash during one of the endings that led me to have to refight the last phase of the final boss to get that ending to properly register in the game.
This port includes all the DS content minus I think one anime cutscene, and unfortunately the DS content is just not very good. The Dimensional vortex unlocked after completing the game for the first time is alright, but the Lost Sanctum, accessible from a green portal, should be avoided at all costs unless you feel like wasting your time with tedious side quests that only serve to pad the time and completely overlevel you for any other content. The anime cutscenes are nice, but were introduced with the PS1 version of the game.
It's a fine port of a classic that everyone who likes RPG should play one day. Probably the most important reference of turn-based RPG/JRPG with a dream team of producers, including the art director Akira Toriyama (DBZ, etc). Can be a little buggy making the game crash from time to time, but with the new auto-save function, it's not a big deal.
A classic JRPG and probably one of the best Super Nintendo games ever. The fun still holds up today.
Don't let the short amount of time fool you. I have this game on multiple systems. I haven't beaten it yet, despite that.
This is one of my favorite games. It's delightfully retro, and the story is one of my favorite.
As others have stated, the port job on this is poor and needs to be fixed. How so many people can play it and not notice or have issues is surprising. Love the nostalgia, hate the current state of this classic game.
Amazing =3 I only crashed 3 times. Not nearly as bad as every time with Fallout 76 xD
Game is great. port to steam is playable, there are workarounds online.
- Liked most of the story except some of the early parts
- Didn't like some of the side quests needed to farm items to prepare for the Boss. Especially Lost Sanctum part to unlock Nu's shop.
One of my favorite games of all time. To think I played this 1995 game in the 2020s and still loved it so much. The story is incredible and comes with the old-school story feel. Loved the art and character interactions. The gameplay itself is strategic whilst also having some measure of timing, which is a nice innovation on the tried and true method of JRPGs. I will absolutely play this again in the future, start to finish, I want to be in that world again. It has made me a fan for life, and even now, despite it being a couple of years after I finished it, I am hunting for some cool merch of the game
Beautiful
This and FF6 are goats of both all classic RPG's and RPG's in general. I'd recommend this over FF6 to most gamers because it's a bit more user-friendly to people that aren't used to classic JRPGs and has an overall better pacing. Excellent story, excellent cast. It made me care about a boxy pixel robot named Robo and an silly looking anthropomorphic frog named Frog. Probably the best classic JRPG to start with or play if you're only gonna play one. Also one of the best time travel stories I know of in any medium. This port wasn't without it's pips when I played it but still so worth it.
Terrible port. Crashes a lot, graphics issues, lots of minor bugs. I lost the pleasure of playing this amazing game.
I've not collected all of the endings, but, I am 30 hours in. I love the graphics. I find the move pools on the playable characters somewhat limited, especially for healing, but healing items are plentiful enough. I don't love this port, for the record. I had the original in a system dustier than the Sahara and it crashed less than this. Still, I'm glad Chrono Trigger on Steam is a thing. A sketchy Chrono Trigger port is still playing Chrono Trigger.
Even though combat looses a bit of it's charm at the second half, it's still an amazing rpg and game! Felt lot's of emotions during my time playing it. Awesome soundtrack and graphics for SNES standarts. There is definetly a reason ehy some call it the best Jrpg of all time.
Chrono Trigger is an absolute masterpiece that stands the test of time. Developed by Squaresoft, this classic RPG from the 90s is an unparalleled blend of captivating storytelling, innovative gameplay, and beautiful art. Let’s dive into why this gem is still beloved by gamers of all generations:
1. Engaging Storyline:
The narrative of Chrono Trigger is nothing short of extraordinary. You embark on a time-traveling adventure with a group of unforgettable characters. Each era you visit is richly detailed and meticulously crafted, from the prehistoric age to a dystopian future. The story weaves themes of friendship, destiny, and sacrifice, keeping you hooked until the very end. The multiple endings based on your choices add immense replayability, making each playthrough feel unique.
2. Memorable Characters:
The characters in Chrono Trigger are deeply developed and endearing. From the courageous and kind-hearted Crono to the enigmatic Magus, every character has a compelling backstory and personality that shine through. The interactions and bonds formed between them add emotional depth to the journey, making players genuinely care about their fate.
3. Timeless Music:
Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu’s musical score for Chrono Trigger is nothing short of legendary. The melodies are hauntingly beautiful and perfectly complement the game's atmosphere. Tracks like "Corridors of Time" and "Frog's Theme" evoke strong emotions and remain etched in players' minds long after the game is over.
4. Innovative Gameplay:
The gameplay mechanics of Chrono Trigger were groundbreaking at the time and remain enjoyable today. The Active Time Battle (ATB) system keeps combat exciting and dynamic. The ability to combine characters' abilities for powerful Tech attacks adds a layer of strategy and fun. The lack of random encounters and the seamless transition between exploration and battle create a smooth and immersive experience.
5. Gorgeous Art Style:
Akira Toriyama’s character designs and the vibrant pixel art bring the world of Chrono Trigger to life. The attention to detail in each environment, from lush forests to futuristic cities, is stunning. The game's visuals have aged gracefully, retaining their charm and appeal over the years.
6. Thought-Provoking Themes:
Chrono Trigger tackles profound themes such as the impact of time, the consequences of actions, and the fight against fate. It encourages players to reflect on their choices and their ripple effects throughout history. The philosophical undertones add depth to the narrative, making it more than just a simple adventure.
7. High Replay Value:
With its numerous endings, side quests, and hidden secrets, Chrono Trigger offers immense replay value. Players can experiment with different party compositions, uncover new storylines, and strive for the perfect ending, ensuring that the game never feels repetitive.
Conclusion:
Chrono Trigger is a timeless classic that exemplifies the pinnacle of RPG design. Its engaging story, memorable characters, beautiful music, innovative gameplay, and thought-provoking themes make it a must-play for any gamer. Whether you’re experiencing it for the first time or revisiting it years later, Chrono Trigger is a journey you’ll cherish forever. 🌟
One of the greatest Role playing games of all time. With one of the greatest original sound tracks, remarkable game and worth every second put into it.
I so desperately wanted to finish playing this game, this is such an amazing game with beautiful pixel art, amazing music, and interesting combat that is unique to Chronotrigger, HOWEVER. DO NOT GET THIS GAME ON STEAM. This port is TERRIBLE, it crashed constantly, almost non-stop, everytime a cutscene played it would crash. I got about halfway through before getting to a section that kept crashing. I have a good computer, I tried all of the solutions online, and none of them worked. This is an amazing game but one of the worst ports. I'll revisit this game in a couple years but it will be on an emulator instead of on steam. If you're thinking about playing this game, play the SNES version on an emulator. It is absolutely unacceptable that an almost THIRTY year old game would have such a terrible port. I wanted to thug it out but it got to a point I personally couldn't ignore, and so I have given up on the steam port.
It's a good story, and the battles are engaging.
This is a great game, during the ending credits slide i was already feeling nostalgic and missing these sprites.
This release of the game has received some negative feedback for its technical issues. After logging in over 40 hours and 100 percenting the game, I'll admit that I personally never ran into any of the problems often cited by players. With that being said, even with the game running flawlessly this is still not the best version of the game. Chrono Trigger is arguably the greatest JRPG of all time, and all my gripes mainly stem from its additional content post-1995. I won't waste my time gushing about what the game does right--mainly because you can easily find someone far more eloquent than myself to explain it in better detail--but also because I believe its newer problems are often glossed over.
From SNES to PS1 to DS to IOS and now to PC, the problem this port suffers from is FAT. For all the great it does, I find the original's greatest strength to be its pacing. At no point in the main story is there a slog: no sections that require grinding, no confusing or improperly explained story beats that require hours of wandering the hub world, no RNG cheese and random encounters, etc. Even side quests are fun, usually requiring common sense and a unique usage of the time travel mechanic to complete. The game is just fun to play from start to finish.
And that's where the later ports start to screw up. With Chrono Cross releasing on the PS1 Square decided to port Trigger to the console as well. This resulted in abysmal load times and a staple of the time: FMVs. To put it bluntly, this game's FMVs suck. In the late 90's they were mainly used to showcase the system's capabilities and the game's graphics... two things not needed for a 16-bit re-release. Their placement is jarring and will oftentimes just take you out of the story. A few egregious occasions will have the video play before a special moment (animated in an over-the-top anime style) only to then cut back to the main game where the sprites will do what was just shown in the FMV: often in a much less dramatic fashion. I can't imagine how lame it'd feel for a first-time player. And the worst part is... YOU CAN'T TURN THEM OFF! LET ME TURN THEM OFF! Animation-wise they're quite good but look like they belong in a pachinko machine; nice to stumble upon on youtube but a net negative when added to the game.
This leaves the content added in the DS version: the 'Dimensional Vortex' and 'Lost Sanctum' dungeons. They're useless padding at best and story killers at worst. Recycled assets, bland design (putting it VERY mildly), and zero incentive to complete because the only way they can be done is near the end of the game... when the stat buffs and new equipment are useless.
The Lost Sanctum is a hodgepodge of fetch quests that are just a chore to go through. Usually needing to be done in a specific order which requires you to jump back and forth in time and run through the same handful of floors to complete. FUCK MU.
The Dimensional Vortex was marketed as an "epilogue" to the main story. Even getting to that end is a hassle as 90% of the dungeon in all three time periods has you running through previous levels. There's no reason to even engage in combat as well because:
A. You're already a high enough level, or
B. The levels you're sent to are from the beginning of the game and the enemies are too low-level to be worth getting XP from
Which leaves you sprinting the whole way through the dungeon until you get to the boss. Rinse and repeat three times and you'll finally get to see an ending that can only be described as an ugly stain on a previously beautiful tapestry.
Not to say that this version doesn't have improvements: a more accurate translation, toggle sprint, new equipment, and higher resolution options, but If you want the definitive version of the game play the SNES version. And if the Woolsey translation is a problem for you just use a patch.
A very faithful to the original version. Added in some of Akira Toriyama's video scenes and an autobattle that can be turned on and off to speed up fighting animation. Or simply skip doing fights(Boo).
Just remember the controller set up and passwords are using nintendo's button configuration, so if you have a logitech controller like me you'll need to figure out the real button combinations. ABXY = YXAB
It was good enough to make me give up my new game plus rom Ive been moving from computer to computer for 10 years.
A SNES classic with wonderful characters, great story, fantastic soundtrack and great gameplay with the active battle system. This version also gives you two extra dungeons that were not a part of the original (the Lost Sanctum and the Dimensional Vortex) which offer a good post game challenge.
Great story and characters, interesting time mechanics, satisfying length.
Makes me wish the cutscenes were from a full blown anime.
Only thing i can say against it really is the Lost Sanctuary and Mt. Emerald section is just really annoying, not for any difficulty just really really repetitive, i suspect it's pretty optional though so will probably skip that out on ng+.
Chrono Trigger is one of the greatest games of all time - unfortunately, this port still has game breaking errors - hard crashes (zoning into Fiona's house and back out), and glitches (textures in Guardia castle failing to load/render).
I honestly don't see how this is even possible, when it's been in emu form for 30 years without issues, and this is a first party port.
I have recently replayed Chrono Trigger. My last playthrough was well over 20 years ago.
Like many before me have stated and many after me will keep stating Chrono Trigger is a timeless JRPG Masterpiece.
It is a classic and a must play for everyone who has some interest into the genre.
Chrono Trigger is easy to pick up and every element of this game holds up after all these years:
The music, the pixel art, the quality but simplicity of the gameplay (Anyone can play this game).
Even the characters, the story and the pacing is of timeless quality.
The game never overstays its welcome and frankly enough any JRPG being made today can still learn a lot from this game.
It's also a great play on the Steam Deck.
My #1 favorite game, all the way back from the 90's, Its a really good story about survival and friendship. Anywhere it comes out I purchase it. I love it that much.
If you like Dragon Ball and Final Fantasy and SNES jrpg's this is a no brainer. One of the best studio collabs ever.
This CT version is the updated english text version with the additional dungeon area.
Sadly, I cannot recommend this favourite SNES game of mine. It crashed a few times exploring the first town and then my saves soft locked itself in the Mayor's Manor tutorial sequence (after a crash). I could restart and push on but I do not like the idea of a save file always risking corruption.
Perhaps if the game gets stable again, I will buy it again and change my review... however as of now, this is not a good port of a great game.
Might have found a fix/tweak - still pending further tests - but Running the game as Administrator in Windows 8 compatibility mode have let me play a full hour...
However, this is not what I feel a 2024 game should require to properly run.
This is the best RPG of all time, I am 47 and played it the week it was released. I've even got it on my phone. Still the best characters, story, and SOUNDTRACK of all time. If you are a fan of gaming history, this should be in your collection.
For a game that is 30 years old it feels like it hasn't aged one bit. This is the first time I played the game and I enjoyed it from start to finish. The story is great, the characters are all very likeable and the combat feels great once you get used to it. I think the combat is the biggest hurdle of this game but you get used to it after the first hour of playing and then it just get better and better.
