Its so good that it made me realize my friends are pretty shit
great story, great gameplay
If you like anime-style game you should play it!!
Offline achievements do not sync, ruining my platinum run. Steam support was unavailable and Sega support was completely unhelpful. I am disappointed as I've put so many hours into this platinum run. I will no longer be purchasing any products from Steam
This game easily has the best cast in the Persona series, though it struggles slightly when comparing its vibe to Persona 3 (OG) and Persona 5's gameplay.
While it occasionally struggles with pacing, it is almost always fun. The duller moments relate well to its small rural town atmosphere, and the turn based battles can get very tricky if you don't give your opponents their due respect.
this game feels like a home away from home, it has an oddly nostalgic feel despite playing it for the first time as an adult
the characters feel very fleshed out and as you become closer to them you genuinely feel a bond forming
whether you like psychology, feel lonely, or want to relive your highschool days this is the game for you
I love the stupid moments in this game so, so much. I know most (if not all, like P3, P5) have such moments, but honestly most dumb moments in P4 make me laugh a lot also. I'd like to see a remaster (remake) of Persona 4 too, how they did with P3 (P3R). Still, regardless of anything, the whole game itself is very enjoyable just like the rest. Gotta love Persona games. Finished this game late 2024. 10/10 Best plot and Side characters even main character, Amazing Music in general. game Goated As hell,
The game features a fantastic story, great companions, and an immersive setting. Although it feels slightly outdated in terms of quality of life, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
A serviceable Persona entry, which makes plenty of mistakes and errors but is still overall fun.
(Note: I played the Japanese version of the game, not English.)
The main battle mechanics are flawed in many ways. Enemy encounters are pretty awful, and it usually boils down to either killing the enemy before they attack you or taking massive damage if you don't. This is a classic example of a game where instant death attacks fuck everything up, and Naoto being able to spam the shit out of AOE Mahanmaom trivializes everything. Boss difficulty is a bizarre rollercoaster, with the most difficult bosses coming about halfway through the game and everything afterwards being mostly or completely trivial. There's a fairly limited subset of attacks, so strategizing doesn't get much more complicated than "lower defense/increase attack/heal/whale on the boss".
Party members are pretty badly implemented too. EXP isn't shared with non-active party members, so once you swap someone out they become nonviable for the rest of the game. You effectively have to pick which 3 fighters you want to take to the end and then beef them up. Certain party members (Kuma/Naoto) start at such absurdly high levels you're unlikely to be able to rival them with any of the early guys, too. Persona fusion is nice in theory but fairly quickly you reach the point where you have an immortal cannon to rip a hole through your enemies and I didn't end up in a situation where I needed to seriously engage with the fusion systems. The equipment system in this game is basic and uninspiring (and I didn't even realize that you could buy upgrades until halfway through the game because the way it works is unusual). There's a DLC dungeon which attempts to shake all this up, fails miserably, and ends up being the easiest and most forgettable dungeon in the game.
Dungeons are randomly generated. This is bad, because the generation is rudimentary at best and not a single dungeon is more than a bunch of hallways. There is a singular overworld enemy model for the entire game and its movement is both childish and baffling because the hitboxes are a massive pain in the ass. That being said it's more or less possible to always get a pre-emptive strike in, trivializing combat even more.
Enemy designs tend to be unusual and interesting (the upside-down gimp and 6-armed gimp riding a hobby horse were some of my favorites because they come out of nowhere and are totally bizarre). Unfortunately, every dungeon in the entire game uses the same enemy models and by the end I got so used to them that they felt about as same-y as the single overworld model. I understand modeling enemies is difficult but up to 8 palette swaps per model is pretty annoying even for a game of this age. I don't think they even needed more enemy models (they apparently had 50!), simply spacing them out between dungeons and opting for less enemy variety on a per-dungeon level would have worked far better. It's extremely unfortunate that they tried this on a game that already suffered from repetitive dungeons. Boss designs are fine but mostly forgettable beyond first impressions.
The Social Link mechanic in this game does not work, and it's one of the biggest flaws in the entire game. Many people blame themselves for having bad time management, but in this case it's a legitimate flaw in the game's design. Huge chunks of the game are blocked off from SLs entirely forcing the player to just sit around doing nothing given how few side activities there actually are. The game was designed around not finishing all SLs in one playthrough, and in fact an unskilled player is unlikely to finish more than a handful of the non-required ones on their first go around. The knock-on effect is that nothing major happens in an SL. The devs had to operate under the assumption that because a player is unlikely to get far with any single character, none of them can be overly important. This also means that social links cannot have major gameplay significance to avoid unfairly gimping players who can't grasp the life sim system. This then devalues the social stat system. If SLs cannot meaningfully impact gameplay, then the major barrier to entry of an SL, the social stats, are equally meaningless. Putting this all together, maybe 50% of the game overall is dedicated to cutscenes which provide minimal insight into characters and barely impact gameplay. The SLs I did manage to finish were fine; but nothing remotely justified the sheer amount of the game which is dedicated to a mechanic few players will go far with.
None of this is to say that the SLs are poorly written, though some of them are. I really liked Dojima, Nanako, and Kanji's SLs and was enjoying Naoki's until I completely ran out of time. The issue is not that there is no value to be found in SLs, but rather the prioritization they are given in the game. The game will end if you don't finish the dungeons on time, and there is no consequence for missing any SL. Dungeons early-game take a lot of time and it's very easy to lose time on a dungeon, so anything in-game that supports the dungeon crawl will always win out over SLs, and with no other motivation they by necessity fall to the wayside. There are obviously nuances and a lot can be said on this; but at the end of the day, half of this 80-hour game is consistently shortchanged by the devs and that can't just be swept under the rug.
Character writing and dialogue suffers from some major issues. This game is horny to the point where it was just irritating, and it feels like every single goddamn cutscene has to devolve into it. Rise and Teddie are the worst offenders, and it legitimately felt to me like they dragged down every cutscene they were in. Despite the fact that you can romance any female cast member, the game completely ignores that and acts like you're dating Rise at every available opportunity. If you hate Rise or otherwise find her annoying, this becomes absolutely intolerable very quickly. Game dialogue overall suffers from the usual repetitiveness issue that plagues games like this, but otherwise interactions were generally realistic and I enjoyed plenty of the game's scenes.
The story has a rollercoaster of quality. The sections that involve the murder are interesting, and for the first third of the game the pacing is consistent. It falls apart at that point and meanders for a while until the Heaven dungeon, which for me was the highlight of the game. It goes downhill from there, and once you defeat the actual culprit everything afterward is mostly drivel and comes out of nowhere. I disliked the DLC character, and her entire SL, so her dungeon was equally unenjoyable to me. The final final boss had uninteresting motives and was poorly integrated into the story. At the end of the day though the story took up a comparatively small amount of the game, and maybe 50% of a good story is decent enough.
Music in this game is fine. Some songs are godawful; several dungeons have short and ugly loops, and there's a "suspenseful" song that was similar in effect to nails on a chalkboard. Near the end of the game, a couple dungeons come out of nowhere with really great songs, and some of the final boss music is great. Otherwise, the music is entirely forgettable but not necessarily in a bad way. The JP voice acting is hit-or-miss; several characters absolutely made me want to scream any time they talked (Rise, Teddie) but the others worked well enough. Naoto's VA worked very well for the twist, and Namatame's voice is pretty great too.
Persona 4 is a sprawling game with a lot to like about it. I enjoyed the battle system for what it was, and there were plot beats and character moments that I liked as well. Ultimately, though, that can't make up for a plethora of poor design decisions and bad writing which drag the game down by a lot and make the experience far less enjoyable than it could be. 5/10
havent finished it yet, this is my 2nd persona game.
i like the story and the combat mechanics, very fun to play through for the most part.
this could just be something on my end but i dont like how you have to grind, it feels overly tedious. along with the complete lack of SP restoration is just annoying to deal with.
I’m not even done with the game yet, but Persona 4 Golden is already my favorite Persona game out of 3 and 5. Best cast and best story.
My first playthrough was on a cracked version, and I did an HL2B review of it. Started playing in July and finished in August of 2022. I still standby my only complaint is that there should have been a warning that my walkthrough would skip parts of the game like how I unknowingly missed a necessary dungeon early on, which was tied to getting the true ending. I know it's my fault, just like how the game would put me to the test if I cared about the characters but nonetheless, It's an optional epilogue that leads to the same climax.
Aside from that, everything about this game is great, especially the dungeon ost and social interactions of the characters. I have no complaints with how the game ended for my first playthrough since, after all, it is an anime with its cliche setup of power of friendship.
first mainline persona game out of 3, 4, and 5, it was a nice introduction to the series, also chie and naoto supremacy
Easily the best RPG I have ever played. This game on original release had a profound impact on me, and it holds up well 17 years later.
10/10 for:
Story, especially the cast of characters
Combat (Although P5 has this one beat)
Replayability (You won't want to play again immediately, but when you're ready NG+ will keep you hooked for an entire run through)
Story length (you will get double your money's worth even if you only play this game once)
8-9 for:
Pacing (this game has the longest exposition of a game I've ever played, but it needs every minute of it to fully immerse you in the setting)
Setting (the small town feel is unique and adds a lot to the story, but it can feel claustrophobic)
6-7/10 for:
Voice acting (all the acting is great, but many scenes are not voiced, which is a felt loss from modern RPGs, including P5)
Graphics (they did just about everything they could to make a PS2 game look good in 2020 without losing its character, but even for the PS2 the models and textures can look... rough. If this is a sticking point for you, wait for the remake)
I will forever miss Inaba and its amazing mysteries to solve, all while spending time with a cast that is so sweet and adorable. I love how this cast reflects a strong, unbreakable friendship, always looking out for each other.
I initially watched the original anime and found it entertaining, but it lacked a conclusion that left me fully satisfied. To really tie everything together, you'll want to experience Golden.
The UI is repulsive, though it probably looked great in the 3DS/PS Vita era it belongs to. I’ll allow it, though. It's a beloved ugly scrunkle <3

Persona 4 Golden is the greatest game i have ever played! It is life changing and eye opening, this game is beautifully made, and the MC Yu narukami is just so amazing this game is worth more than 20$, it is worth every single penny, dime, quarter, dollar, 5 dollar, 10 dollar, 20 dollar, 50 dollar, and 100 dollar bill in the world. this game is so peak.
Once again Atlus srikes with one of the greatest games I've played. I feel like this game was more focused on the comedic side which I really enjoyed. The cast was really enjoyable and likeable. If you're considering buying this it's a great introduction to the Persona series but also very enjoyable even if you've played P5 or P3R.
The soundtrack as usual is absolutely amazing and contains some of my favorite songs in the entire franchise. Heaven is the best dungeon song. It's worth playing just for that song tbh.
I see why most people think this is best persona game. Cast is awesome and feels alive. Story by far is the most interesting from all persona games for me. Music is really great too. But gameplay is kinda meh - like every persona games gameplay starts to get boring after like 2 hours of gameplay if not less. Good thing that this game has exp and money settings - so u can just set it to max like i did and enjoy the story without needing to grind dungeons, and unlike new persona games dungeons dont take that much time to finish - every dungeon has like 11 floors max if not less. Talking about characters, some characters and their personalities feel cliche but it's not really a bad thing for me. Some moments in the story are cringe - some of em are actually funny. Really liked all extra content at the end of the game. Was really interesting to read Mr. Edogawa lecture about conscious and unconscious. Really liked extras about characters and how they were designed. Overall it's a great game with interesting characters, cast that feels alive and story that also pretty interesting to follow.
in terms of story and characters, my overall fav persona game. early game if played at the standard difficulty is pretty difficult compared to p3 and p5, but its just a fun experience overall and its so so so worth it to play before the remake annoucement!
i played two hours for p5r and fell in love with the gaming format, so i decided to play the persona franchise from the beginning. tried playing p1 but realized the game format was just too old for me and persona 3 portable limited moving around, so i turned to persona 4 golden as my true introduction to the franchise
though people argue persona 4 golden is outdated, i disagree (though i am glad to hear a remake is coming out lol). i think the animation, conversation and combat are palatable enough for any modernday gamers to get into. however, i will say the dungeons got annoying really quickly for me, as it felt repetitive after a while, so i hope this changes in the remake
the real stars of the show for me were the characters. the main cast interacted very naturally and were so funny and charming it felt like i was truly investigating a murder mystery with a group of friends. persona 4 has this small town charm that makes it even more loveable for me. i thoroughly enjoyed the other social links as well, namely nanako (i love nanako) and i appreciated you could choose what clubs to be a part of. it made school really feel alive
are some of the jokes a bit outdated/verging on the edge of problematic? yes. should that prevent you from playing this game? personally, i don't think so :) to be sure, you could wait for the remake to come out, but i feel like persona 4 golden in itself has a nostalgic feel to it
Finally got around to it. Looks like I'll be doing it again in 6 months or whatever with the remake.
Best and most fun persona game in my, and many others, opinions. Great story, characters, pacing, visuals, voice acting, and the hardest of the main three (still pretty easy though). Biggest problem is using a guide is essentially necessary for investigations and getting the true ending.
By far the most well-rounded of the three modern personas. 9/10
this game has the best cast in the series imo. If you don't mind the outdated combat I recommend playing this first over Persona 5.
I bought this game when it went on sale, I had never played a Persona game before and this game completely blew me away, I didn't expect it to become one of my favorite games I've ever played, I love the characters and the story, really glad I picked this game up it'll always be special to me.
Hell of a game. The story is just great in general, you just feel like your actually a part of the story with how well the characters are written. If you want a genuine great murder mystery game, then this is the game for you
The game is great and the story was amazing probably the best out of all of the 3 main game however the dungeon was annoying especially if you get to the endgame but still a wonderful game experience
Awesome game with awesome music and an awesome cast of characters... just as expected of ATLUS.
MEGIDOLAOOOON!
Amazing game from start to finish. Once Persona gets its hooks into you, it's hard to let go.
This game features rich, detailed characters, a statisfying and enjoyable gameplay loop, excellent music, and fun graphics. It's a bit older, but it has it where it counts.
After finishing three reload I wanted to continue my persona marathon so here I am now after beating the game. I will say a few things, without spoiling, and give some of my thoughts
GAMEPLAY
Firstly, the gameplay is really weak. Compared to my playthrough of three reload and my ongoing playthrough of five royal, this game has the weakest combat system out of the three. It's pretty standard turn-based rpg combat, but I do like the shuffle time at the end of the fights. Shuffle time is a big redeeming factor of the fights. I basically never ran out of sp with shuffle time. Also, towards the end of the game I grinding to level 99 and got Yoshitsune who is basically the most broken persona in the game. So after doing that, I basically ended up beating every boss in about 10 turns or less.
DUNGEONS
Secondly, the dungeons are the weakest yet. In comparison to the other games, the dungeons are unique but lack substance. The biggest positive of the dungeons is the music in each one, aside from a certain one (rise). Basically what Im getting at is that the dungeons are very linear and boring aside from their design, kind of like three's but since four is older it just ages terribly in comparison.
CHARACTERS
This is where it gets good. THIS IS FOUR'S STRONG POINT. The characters in this game are arguably the funniest and most "friend" like group persona has had to this day. It genuinely feels like a group of highschoolers are hanging out together in this game. Five also does this well, but three is distinctly lacking significant group banter and activities. I think that this group is the most tightly knit, with five's cast coming in a close second, and three's cast being third with my played so far. THIS IS THE MOST IVE LAUGHED IN PERSONA. This cast is funny and some characters have genuinely interesting arcs. I found myself doing more social links in this game because of 1) I learned from three to do so, and 2) I found the cast to be better thus far. I do think I missed a decent chunk of social links because I was dumb, but I have to admit that this games cast captivated me more than threes by a bit.
STORY
I won't lie, this story is very clumsily told. I found that it slowly made more and more sense as I went on, but there are definitely parts where they had to figure out how to connect the dots. The addition of all the new features added in golden make this even more apparent, but I find myself in the minority that actually likes MARIE, and the way the story plays out around the characters is better than the story itself. The villain is predictable, but also I found that striving for the true ending is the only way I felt satisfied leaving this game. The first time I played, I missed the true ending. I went back and got the true ending and I must say, the true ending elevated this game from a 8 to a 10 for me. Basically, if you're going to play for a one time run, go for the true ending. Otherwise, do what you want.
MUSIC
Last point of this. The music in this game is amazing, but it isn't on the level of three reload or five royal in my opinion. Three had elements of jazz, rock, and rap in it. Four has a lot more pop style influence in it. Five is a lot more jazz out of the three. The songs that have Shihoko, the female singer, in them are elite, and the new songs in golden are amazing. If you like persona music, then you're going to love a lot of the music in this game. My personal favorite is Heaven, and I think that if you like the more pop/r&b style that this game has then you'll love the music just as much as I did.
COMPARED TO OTHERS?
This games is the most lighthearted, and if you are considering buying this as your first persona game go ahead but be wary of the weak points I mentioned. If you are continuing your persona journey with this game, you are in for a treat. Overall I find that this game is the Goldilocks of the modern persona games. It's not too much of anything that is persona, but it also doesn't miss on too much for it to be questioned as a persona game.
OVERALL
10/10 Subjectively
8-9/10 Objectively
one of the best games in the series, i've played persona 4 on several different systems over the years from the original release to today, if you're a fan of P5, play this game, you'll love it
Almost like an independent anime series and very in depth, from dungeons, party formations to amazing story where every choice you make matters,
Highly recommended!
first persona game i ever played
How is this game so good!
its taking me forever to finish, but enjoying every single minute of it
In my opinion the best in the series. Even with the dated graphics, the story and characters have so much personality that its hard not comparing the other entries in the series to this one. Persona 5 did a great job of bringing Persona into the modern age and there is a TON i like about that game but the small town feel and pacing in this game is just perfect. I hope ATLUS does not try to remaster this game. As it is right now its perfect.
The gameplay loop of living life and saving people in a strange TV world is addicting and fun. I've lost count of the time often when playing this. I found that the hard mode makes combat fun rather than a mindless click-through-experience like some other JRPGs that I've played and the story is exactly what I was looking for. Oh, and the jazzy soundtrack is now in my lineup of tracts that I listen to when I need to focus.
This is my introduction to the persona series, I can easily say that this quickly became one of my favorite video games of all time. The story is so intriguing, never once had me bored. Everything from learning about/seeing the growth from each individual character through social links and the dungeon crawler turn-based fighting style had me hooked. I can tell so much love was put into this, I look forward to playing more games of this series in the future :)
Man where do I even begin with this game, if you are contemplating getting it or haven't played it, you ABSOLUTELY NEED to. After beating it and getting the "main ending" this is definitely my second favorite game of all time (only second to P5R). There is so much about this game that makes it absolutely perfect. The only negative thing I can even think about this game (other than teddie) is the Dungeons. They are definitely a lot more boring compared to P5 and P3R but even then they are still kinda fun despite being one of the only low point I can think of for this game. No other game will ever compare to this when it comes to aesthetics, story, and characters. The characters are genuinely funny and all have their own amazing developments, as well as deep and funny connections to each other that make me love all of them (except teddie). Even though some people may be turned off or not like it as much because of the older graphics, but honestly they give the game a fun older charm because this version of the game still holds up to this day compared to the more modern persona games. I could go on and on about everything and how amazing this game is but just play it and experience this masterpiece yourself. 10.5/10 <3
The game is fantastic don’t get me wrong but I guess I just need more experience with older titles of the Persona series. BECAUSE WHY AM I STRUGGLING ON THE 3RD CASTLE
10/10 game but no dating yosuke and no sex with adachi
The entire Persona franchise—since Persona 3, at least—changed my life. Persona 3 has a deep, meaningful message and charming characters, while Persona 5 Royal, alongside its message, offers delightful gameplay, nice visuals, a great story, and the 15 hours added in Royal are the best of the entire Persona—and, I dare say, SMT—series, adding sublime new characters and refining the protagonist. Both games taught me valuable lessons that I will carry with me throughout my life. Thus, I highly recommend playing them.
That said, let's talk about Persona 4 Golden. I played it when I was a child on my PS Vita. I remember that I somehow had already heard about the Persona series and, since it had Golden in the title, I decided to give it a shot. I don’t remember much of the game—in fact, I remember almost nothing—but I do recall enjoying it as a child, and I’m experiencing some déjà vu while playing it now. I will edit this review after beating the game.
As for Persona 3 Reload and Persona 5 Royal, its predecessor and successor, I highly recommend playing both of them. For Royal, make sure to look up how to get the true ending—don’t worry, the guides contain no spoilers, and it’s easy to accomplish. You don’t need to play the Persona games in order to understand the story, as they aren’t directly connected.
You can feel the love that was put into making this. The character interactions are fun and heartwarming, the story is compelling. It has everything. My personal favourite game of all time.
Every day’s great at your Junes!
My first encounter with the Persona series was… underwhelming. I tried Persona 5 Royal when it came to Game Pass a few years ago, but I just didn’t get it. Playing as a high school student, commuting on the subway, handling daily routines, so it all felt boring and unappealing. After two hours, I uninstalled it and moved on.
Fast forward to recently, I got a Steam Deck and decided to give the series another shot. And let me tell you, that was one of the best gaming decisions I’ve ever made. After fully completing Persona 4 Golden and reaching the true ending, I can confidently say that I’ve never seen a story so intricate, layered, and full of twists. The detective mystery is gripping, but at its core, this game is really about something deeper of course friendship, self discovery, and the bonds that shape who we are.
The more time you spend in Inaba, the more it starts to feel like home. Strengthening social links isn’t just some game mechanic. It’s a way to really connect with these characters, to see their struggles, their dreams, and what makes them who they are. By the time the journey ends, it doesn’t feel like just finishing a game it feels like saying goodbye to real friends.
Gameplay-wise, dungeons can get a bit repetitive, and enemies are easy to memorize once you figure out their weaknesses. But the boss fights? That’s where the game truly shines. Each one is well-designed, challenging, and requires strategy rather than just brute force.
I absolutely loved all the extra activities, like the Seaside Trip, New Year’s Celebration, visiting another school, the Ski Resort trip, and so many other small but meaningful moments. These events made the world feel even more alive, strengthened the bond with the group, and created an atmosphere that felt warm, nostalgic, and unforgettable.
But what really makes Persona 4 Golden special is its atmosphere. It’s warm, nostalgic, and genuinely comforting. Even after 120 hours, I wasn’t ready to say goodbye. That’s why I’m already planning to replay it on NG+ with the additional content. And as if that wasn’t enough, I’ve also started Persona 3 Reload, eager to experience more of what this series has to offer.
If you’ve never played Persona before, or if like me you tried it once and didn’t connect with it, give it another chance. P4G is an experience that stays with you long after the credits roll.
Totally Recommended!
This is my first love for JRPG. Characters are lovable, the music is beautiful, the story is intriguing, combat is challenging (so long as you don't grind too much). What else do you want from a JRPG?
I think this is still the best persona, it tends to focus more on the visual novel aspect more than the other games. I think that this does hurt the replay value if you just play for the combat but the casual experience is probably the best out of all the games. What I liked most is that the paranormal aspect of these games tends to be more of a backdrop and instead there is a focus on everyday life with fun character interactions.
9/10.
Would be a 10 with the original P4 intro song.
Chie is best girl.
Rise achievement may possibly be a war crime on mental health.
A little over four hours in. Awesome turn based JRPG mechanics and a really interesting story so far. Not sure where it's headed but I believe in the developers.
Awesome storyline (Check)
Awesome characters (Check)
Awesome music (Check)
One of the best video game that i've ever played
great story, characters and music, didn't hit me as hard as persona 3 or 5 personally but its amazing nonetheless
Persona 4 Golden was the first Persona game I managed to complete after contemplating for years which game I should start the series off with. After finishing, I personally enjoyed it the most as my introduction to the series and wished I chose to play much sooner! What I usually find issue with in Persona games is both the pacing and volume of content, but P4G handles both the best compared to others in the lineup. I enjoyed so much in Inaba without being overwhelmed by how many activities you could do outside of story progression.
Every character in the Investigation Team introduced is someone beloved and layered to the point where I enjoyed everyone's company to max out their social links. I'd expect at least 1-2 characters to be written as off putting compared to the main cast not a single one ever raised that flag for me, not even Teddie. I will miss Chie's galactic punts, visiting Aiya to boost my social stats, going to the shrine to help me increase Rise's social link, grinding wealth hands in the bathhouse, and much, much more. I will definitely revisit the game for a NG+ run.
