Another superb entry in the Off The Record series. I enjoyed the plot and the variety of puzzles/difficulty. My only complaint is the length of the game...far too short. I still highly recommend, however.
Great game even better on sale, not as good as the 1st in the series but still good
This game is Amazing! You get to jet set around Italy, talk with many characters, puzzles are nice & easy to the storyline progresses nicely.. and the story is excellent. Not your typical fairytale, it actually makes sense. It's a pretty good length too and I never wanted to stop playing because I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. The audio and visual devices are a super cool addition to the game play, as is the cozy little "cards" pocket in which to use various cards that you obtain during the game. Wish there were a couple of more assemble and/or paint the pictures and maybe if you could actually "DO" something more with the photos you collect, but that's just me. Excellent job Eipix. Good quality graphics and decent voice acting too. Loved it! Can't wait for more!
Just to adding my agreement to what has already been said, really.
This is IMO the best of the series (out of 4 so far). The graphics certainly go way beyond what's normally passable in a HOG.
Does that really matter for this genre? Well yes; it does. When I play older HOGs, I notice the lack of quality in the graphics. When I play contemporary ones, I barely notice them at all. But in this they really stood out, and made each new scene/map a genuinely joyful experience.
Also, the characters were actually pretty well written and interesting. Although the plot started intriguing and descended into confusing and then cliched, this really isn't why I play HOGs, so any interest in it at all is a plus.
The usual complete nonsense HOG 'logic' applied, of course. The one negative review here so far talks about logical inconsistencies. Really? Have you ever played a HOG that makes even a Hollywood level of sense? Suddenly a random pile of junk appears, you pick things out of it, and take away one item. This you use once (however useful it might appear to be) and then somehow vanishes forever. And every door is locked by an intricate puzzle, the many parts of which are scattered nearby. And oil cleans up any level of rust instantly. And nobody has a smart phone? Whaaat?!!?
No; HOGs have their own logic, and this one doesn't break that more than any other. (In general, it's a lot more realistic than most.)
So definitely a recommended from me. The whole series is pretty solid, but I found the first a bit naive, the second (this one) superb, and the others just a bit 'turn the handle and cash-in'. (Did the developer change? Can't be bothered to check right now, but it wouldn't surprise me.)
Ok. How do I put this. I DID not like this one. Don't like not being able to go back to area I missed. Travel is automatic so I'm warning you. Once you leave the first area you'll see what I mean. Did not like the story. I should have liked the story. Just. Some crap made absolutely no sense. If this was a supernatural story I might let it slide. But an active swinging guillotine underneath a mental hospital. Right. Gas goes into a gas can? Wrong. Goes into a big pot. Sure. Just.... Usually when something makes sense I can just be like yea. Haunted. Crazy. Paranoid. This. The puzzles and such just did not really fit the story they were trying to tell. And the camera mechanic while unique. Did not really add anything to it. Not going to recommend this one unless your a fan of the series, a completionist, or a HOG nut. Hence me playing and review these kinds of games.
I played all the Off The Record series games and I'll give them all the same review, since they were not very different from each other (except the story). This game (like all the other ones in the series as well) is very well made, has nice graphics and good playability. They story is somewhat forgettable and the characters are okay, but overall it's a very nice game to spend 2-3 hours with. Full price sounds a bit harsh considering the amount of content, but best bought when discounted ;)
Our journalist is back again with another episode from Off the Record series. While she was having a nice vacation in Venice, she received a phone call from her boss informing her about a museum theft, the prime suspect is the very famous La Volpe. Problem is everyone thought this thief already retired five years ago, his appearance now would make a great report this is why our main character didn't turn down this opportunity.
In this journey and investigation, you'll meet many characters, I honestly suspected each one of them. The story pace was really good although it turned a little bit cliché by the end of it, I didn't mind it at all.

The hidden objects scenes were well made, in one of the scenes they'll give you words, and in the other, they'll give you some silhouettes to spot but the art, in general, was done beautifully. I found myself enjoying the details of the art as well as the music which wasn't repetitive at all. This game is a good choice if you need a casual relaxing one. Puzzles were clear and easy. The variety of everything made this game worth every cent you spend on it.

I loved the map, I found it very unique and beautifully drawn map, I looked forward to moving from a location to another to see how the miniature design will look like. And like the previous game, you'll have to collect cassettes and listen to them to get more hints about the case.

Pros:
+Fitting and not repetitive soundtracks.
+Beautiful graphics.
+Interesting story
+Good voice overs.
+Beautifully made fast travel map.
+Very useful and good looking journal/notes.
+Collectibles.
Cons:
-No steam achievements. (There is an in-game achievement)
-No steam cards.
Same as the previous game, the bonus chapter added some good information to the main story which I enjoyed and recommend not to skip. This game is not bad, I know some people care for steam achievements but I found the game more relaxing without worrying about finding 10 objects in ten seconds. I do recommend this game to casual gamers who enjoy good art, music, and story.

You're investigating the case of La Volpe, a famous Italian thief who seemed to have reappeared after years of hiding by stealing an important artifact. What will you find in Venice and the countryside? A true thief or simply a retired one that was framed for something he didn't do?
Off the Record: The Italian Affair is a nice game, with a good plot. I don't say that because it's set in Italy - I'm uite partial to that kind of settings as I've roots in that country - but because, well, you never expected to have many references to La Volpe (I missed some of them while playing the game and was quite sad to see my detective skills so low in this game). Oh and before anything, no, La Volpe in this game isn't the same La Volpe as Assassin's Creed 2.
What I love in this game is the perfect mix between hidden objects scenes and puzzles. I also love hunting for collectibles (foxes or letters of the title or even pages for education) - though I'm wondering how come in two playthroughs, I've managed to miss the same item despite following the guide for them. The gameplay is standart to that kind of games: use items you're finding, solve puzzles, clear hidden objects scenes and find yourself sometimes in a bad situation.
The graphics are quite correct and you're really feeling like being in Italy. The soundtrack is nice too, as usual with an Off the Record game.
While I'm writing a review from an experience from months ago, I still remember a little negative point: sometimes I was feeling like stuck because I've quite forgotten some actions. And the problem is that the first time wasn't really about that as it was the beginning of the game. But well, it's more a problem of mine than a real problem in the game: some are really worse in that sense.
Anyway, I have to say that; buy it. It's really worthy!
TL,DR: Surprisingly enjoyable hidden object/point-and-click mix.
In more detail:
The legendary Italian cat burglar "La Volpe" or "the fox" had retired officially, but now he's stolen a priceless artifact once owned by Marco Polo. You play as a journalist trying to figure out why he's returned to his old ways. But maybe things are not as simple as they seem.
Hidden object games often have rather cheesy stories, and while this one's story is more or less cheesy and somewhat predictable (at least once you've played for a while), I found myself actually interested in it and the characters.
Even though I had to suspend disbelief quite often since Off the Record's Italy is jam-packed with secret compartments and wondrous mechanisms. But why not.
There is a lot to do here - many lovingly drawn screens await, and once you discover a new location, you'll usually find a lot of problems to resolve and objects to pick up. There are only a handful of screens at a time, so it should be easy to keep the overview. Nevertheless, that didn't always work for me and I'd sometimes forget which puzzles were still open. But if you ever find yourself in that predicament and don't want to check everywhere again, there is a hint function. Also, the many minigames are on the easier side, but if they're not your cuppa, they are skippable (as has become the norm in HOGs). If that's still not good enough for your taste, even a full walkthrough has been included.
A note on that: I'm not quite sure whether it's always available or tied to the collectibles. There are several collectibles throughout the game, i.e. there is a fox figurine hidden on every screen and then there are some objects you will find in a few locations only, like scrolls (which may be what contains the walkthrough), letters or morphing objects. Since these are optional, they are a nice addition for completionists.
The game has several difficulty levels which determine how fast hints recharge and how much handholding you get. It also offers achievements, though sadly, they are only visible in-game.
Once you've completed the game, there's a bunch of extras such as a bonus game that continues the story, the soundtrack, behind-the scenes info etc.
"The Italian Affair" took me several hours to complete (maybe 4-6 h; the time given on my profile isn't accurate because at times the game was idling in the background and at other times I played offline). Judge for yourself whether that's worth buying it full price or whether you want to wait for a sale.
a pause button for the credits! genius!!!
