I haven't played a game that scratched all my point'n'click & puzzle needs so well in a long time.

The team behind this game definitely put a lot of effort into everything: story, dialogue, graphics, secrets and gameplay. I personally was not the biggest fan of this soundtrack, but I can see that others could easily enjoy it a lot. I also enjoyed the small minigames, luckily there is a skip function for those who are annoyed of this type of thing.

TL;DR If you are looking for a good point'n'click puzzle game to challenge your wits -> GET THIS GAME!

First of all, the story is not very good.
A lot of dialogue... and most of it is really boring and uninteresting.
The worst are the dialogue puzzles, so tidious and long. Just painfull.
I like the graphics....

I liked the game.

As it has been written in the other ratings the game has sometimes confusing sequences of how you need to solve the quests before progressing and the dialogues can become lengthy and boring.
-> To the developers: you should include the possibility to Esc dialogues, maybe even to the point where the player's decision becomes relevant again.

However, the game has a certain charme to it, which is composed of the special setting and the main character. I also liked the story. Generally you feel that the developers actually put their heart into the game.

I hope there will be a follow up.

I liked the art style and the music, but I thought some of the dialogue and puzzles let me down. That said, I do recommend this game to people who like point n click games and i'm looking forward to the continuation of the story!

A Tale of Caos: Overture is apparently the second game in a trilogy. The first game is 'A Tale of Caos: Prelude' and the third (which I'm not even sure has been finished/released yet) is 'A Tale of Caos: Symphony". Unfortunately neither are available on Steam. A side adventure which is sort of a prequel, called 'Rogue Quest' featuring the character Cassandra Nech is available on Steam. I've played Rogue Quest and found it to be a really fun but unfortunately very short game. ATOC:Overture however is much longer and not quite as fun in my opinion.

The game is a retro style pixel animation. For the style it is pretty good but the graphics aren't really super fantastic. The backgrounds and settings while done ok seem to lack interest in most places. The characters all seem to have extremely odd designs too. I'm guessing because they are in an intergalactic setting and trying to make diverse alien looking characters but many of the designs come across as more silly cartoonish looking humans as opposed to diverse humanoid species. Another thing I find a little weird is that there's almost zero character animation. Mostly you see characters breathing (rather fast breathing patterns). The main character doesn't even have a walk animation. You click on the next scene and it fades out and then fades in on the next scene. You never see the character move to touch or examine anything. This makes it a little confusing an frustrating walking around exploring too since it's hard to tell which direction you came from or are heading.

The background sounds were okay but I didn't care for most of the background music. I found it a little too repetitive in a bad way and it started to give me headaches listening to it. It was also very loud. For some reason (my PC doesn't do this with any other game or program... I checked) whenever I start the game my volume jumps up to 14 (I usually don't put it up past 10) so the loud music then is even louder but I have to set the volume down to 8 to make it bearable. I actually had to just mute my computer most of the time so I didn't have to hear anything. Don't get me wrong the sound's okay just not for long periods of time and I tend to play long sessions so in smaller amounts maybe the music isn't as irritating. The dialogues are all text based so there's no recorded voices but there are occasional recorded sound effects for some characters.

The interface was okay but it left a lot to be desired. You access your menu/inventory by hovering the cursor over the bottom of the screen where it then pops up. This however frequently gets in the way if you need to access going south on a screen. The inventory can only display a certain number of items before you need to press a little button to go to the next set of items. That's not inherently bad design but the problem I had is that when you pick up one item and need to go to another inventory screen to combine it... it's difficult to figure out where to click. The hand holding the inventory object is large and there's no clear pointer spot so you have to keep clicking around to find the sweet sport to switch to the previous inventory slots. It was very frustrating and time consuming to do so and sometimes you end up dropping the item and having to go back and do it all over again. It makes randomly combining items to find solutions far more tedious. I also found that hot spots sometimes had a very small radius of recognition so it can be difficult to locate paths that you can take. You might be touching in the right general direction/area but not on the hotspot so you think you can't go there or interact with something. I found that a little annoying.

I think the story itself is pretty interesting and certainly has potential but it starts off feeling like somethings missing which I think is because there's a game that comes before it and your're missing that part of the story. You get a little backstory but it doesn't feel like you're getting the whole story and so it's an awkward start. In addition some parts of the story don't seem to make much sense and our character seems far too naive and scatterbrained. They include a lot of pop culture and game references in the game including things from Doctor Who, Queen, King's Quest, Monty Python, and so many more. They are kind of fun to see in there but very few add to enjoyment or humor of the game.

The puzzles and mini games I'm mixed on. On the one hand there's the mini games that involve Terry's tools which might have been okay of you only have to solve it once and then Terry remembers how to use it and just automatically does it in the future. However, that's not what happens and I find the multi-tool, alchemy, and eco-power tool mini-games to be too repetitive (you do them many times throughout the game) and tedious. I don't like those particular style mini games and having to repeat them so often is very frustrating. Only the alchemy tool has a skip option. As far other puzzles and mini games go some of them are fun and even clever. They follow a logical reasoning and make sense on what to combine, use, do. Others however, are not. Some of them are bizarre solutions that make no sense and use odd things that you would never think of combining together. Many times solutions require getting an item more than once or repeating a dialogue option multiple times. Like most P&C adventures your expected to exhaust all dialogue options to get all the clues and progress in the game but some of the puzzles or long dialogue based puzzles which are frustrating and time consuming. The game suffers from using the same types of puzzes/games again and again making them more boring as you progress in the game and leading you to feel more frustrated as you play through. I did end up using their included walkthrough a lot. At first just because there were achievements for doing so but then I found at times I would get so lost with what I needed to do or how to do it that I needed a hint anyways.

If you're into achievements this game has quite a few and you could potentially get them all in one playthrough if you are careful and thorough. Many will unlock naturally as you play through the game but there are several that require you to do additional actions or discover secret rooms. Unfortunately there do not currently seem to be any guides for getting all the achievements and some are much more difficult to get. Even after hours of trying/searching I've been unable to find Act III's secret room earning one of the last 2 badges I missed. The other one I missed is never skipping the mini games for the tools. You'll want to keep that in mind if you want to get all the achievements in one playthrough.

I played this game for about 19 hours (most of it going through long dialogue, walking back and forth, or trying every random item on things). At full price this about $0.47/hr of gameplay which isn't a bad price point in general but the gameplay's entertainment level kind of goes down as it seems to drag for long periods of the game. I'm giving it a recommendation but it's kind of borderline for me.

A particularly enjoyable way to spend time.

I had a few problems with the game occasionally just stopping responding to the point I had to Alt-F4 out of it and try to play parts of it over because there is no autosave.

But the story was quite enjoyable.

The only other complaint I had was the multitool minigame - especially on a 4K monitor - you could click for it to unlock within the range and it might not accept it.

I really liked this game. It was frustrating in a few parts where you have to just guess what the right response is and I had to go over some things more than I really wanted to.

The walkthrough option is great because it gives little hints to help push you in the right direction to figure it out on your own but gives you the answer if you get stuck.

Overall this was a great game. The only thing that bothered me was the massive amount of dialogue. I really liked the fact that Act 1 and 2 were so long. I am anxious for Symphony.

I don't write a lot of reviews, but I wanted to give this game some love because I really liked it and want to see the Caos Symphony be developed.

This game is old school. No voiceovers and lots of dialogue. I loved the main characters, Terry and Heimlich, and their interactions between themselves and others. The story was great and I wanted to play it out to find out what happens. It definitely kept my interest.

Most of the puzzles were adventure game logical so it might be a little more challenging for beginning adventure gamers. But the game has an in-game walkthrough that will get you unstuck from any situation you might find youself in. There are a couple minigames which require some reflex clicking (e.g., clicking when the cursor hits a spot on a bar) but I made it through pretty easily and I don't have the best speed reflexes in the world so I think most people can handle it without too much trouble.

Manual saves and so you can save as often and never have to wait for a save point. You don't die in the game so the save is mostly for safe progress keeping rather than making sure you don't have to replay hours because your character fell off a cliff or something. :)

Someone mentioned 104 dialogue choice clicking in Act II. Seriously, you would only click that many times if you were forcing the result and not trying to solve the riddles. Once you see that you need words of wisdom from all the NPCs, you just go and collect them all. Once that is done, you can solve the riddles by careful choices. There are some of these kinds of puzzles in this game and I did have to get some actual paper and take notes - especially in Act III. Old school adventure. Doing that on occasion is fine by me and makes me smile more than irritates me.

I had a lot of fun playing this blast from the past game that was clever, charming and funny. I highly recommend it to people that like the old style point and click adventures.

A Tale of Caos: Overture makes an earnest attempt, but sadly falls short lacking in production quality, gameplay and story.

A Tale of Caos uses colorful pixel art with occasional comic panel style cut scenes interspersed at action heavy moments. That said it is pretty underwhelming. Unlike many other point and click games, this one has almost no animation. At each scene you stare at a lightly animated picture. Characters on screen do not move more than light breathing or doing a repetitive task. The dialogue will say the characters are doing things when the visuals still show characters standing still. This is just unappealing and feels lazy. Even so when done correctly this style does not have to be bad. Detective Grimoire took a similar route, but it used velvety smooth character animations and the dialogue never disagreed with the visuals, making for a much better experience than A Tale of Caos’s attempt.

Moreover, the game is incredibly dialogue heavy, yet they way dialogue is rendered makes it difficult to read and in some case hard to tell it is even on screen. A Tale of Caos seems confused on whether it wants to be a visual novel or a point and click because it has a “tell don’t show” approach to storytelling. The characters apparently live in a vibrant multidimensional universe, which we never see. The author has some clear vison of the world but world building feels like it gets in the way of game play. Dialogue trees are hard to navigate and it is not obvious when asking the same question again will get different results.

Continuing, some puzzles are the standard rub two things together type, but others are awkward dialogue puzzles. The dialogue puzzles in Act II were painfully drawn out with lots of looping dialogue. You have to read HUNDREDS of lines of the SAME text repeatedly if you did not respond correctly the first time. Worse yet, on occasions asking the same question repeatedly will get you a different response. Other times the game includes a huge number of dialogue options because the creators thought it would be funny. The problem with this is that if you are stuck on a puzzle you might actually try exhausting those options, which is time consuming and unrewarding.

The story starts off simply, with a slapstick tone and an airheaded genius. There are immediate implications that you are working for the bad guy, which given the tone seems like the game would conclude with a comical ending. It does not. Instead the first two acts are largely irrelevant world building, followed by a third act that deeply analyzes the protagonist psyche and troubled past. That third act came out of nowhere and completely undermined the tone of the game and the art. But the problems continue as the third act is largely just an excuse to reuse assets from the previous acts. If that was not bad enough, it ends on a cliff hanger with very little at stake. There is no clear indication on what horrible thing will happen. So we are left neither a satisfying ending nor real anticipation for the next game.

I feel bad for negatively reviewing the game. This isn’t some rush out door attempt, there is quite a bit of character in this game. It just unfortunate that design, gameplay and story all seem to be at odds with each other.

Here's everything that's wrong with this game in one paragraph. In Act II there's a dialog puzzle where you need to select appropriate responses to keep the chat going in the right direction. The dialog is circular, and if you have all the responses except one figured out and miss the last one, you need to left-click 102 (one hundred and two) times to get to the junction where you can try again. No, I'm not kidding, and there is no way to skip the intermediate lines or even to go out of the dialog in case your brain starts having a meltdown.

Dialogs aren't well-organized, and there are other excessively long dialog puzzles in Act II and Act III as well.

Other puzzles in Act II are horribly drawn-out too. You have to collect the same item five times and use it in the same place three times. Even worse, after you use it for the first time, you get a certain result and no indication that the sequence needs to be repeated. And no clear indication when the sequence does not need to be repeated anymore.

Those drawn-out puzzles aren't chained too well. In an -- also excessively long -- treasure hunt, if you reach a certain location before the relevant NPC appears there, you get no explanation of why you cannot proceed. Items or NPCs appear after some non-related events elsewhere.

In Act II you can be carrying 21 items while having access to 15 locations, also without any clear indication of what needs to be done next. Many of those items are pretty generic, and you'll be carrying them around for a long time before finally finding a place to use them.

Starting from Act II, the game became much less funny, with no amusing stories from NPCs, the lore and even the dialogs became much less relevant to the game events, instead leaning heavily towards metaphysical hot air.

The minigames are boring and meaningless, with the player's actions having no relation to what Terry is supposedly doing.

It's one of those "complete" games that not only end on a cliffhanger but also leave most of the story unexplained, only hinting at some backstory and promising a larger plot.

I did like Act I, I want to see how the story unfolds, and I particularly liked the graphic-novel-style panels. Also, the game includes a well-implemented walkthrough. So the game definitely isn't unplayable, but I think it makes too many mistakes in its design.

Meh... No voice acting, animation only while characters idling and it's simple looped. Characters not doing anything just standing while text explain that they actually do. Boring. Very boring. Plot isn't so bad and text wrote well, but without voices it's too boring to read. Graphic drawn well and its remind old games like King Quest or Space Quest. Maybe it's just not my cup of tea, or maybe I played not too many point-and-click quests to judge well. I think if you liked this graphic... yeah why not, it's cheap. But it's only one thing that game can actually gave you.

I really don't like the gameplay. The first screen shows perfectly what I don't like: there's a hammer, and you ask the protagonist to pick it up. She does nothing. But she actually IS trying to pick it up, without moving an inch, just doing "sounds" like "mmmph" to represent she's trying (mind you, in the same static pose, with a slightly looped animation). This carries on for the rest of scenarios. I'm already bored. Love the graphics, though. Will continue playing to see the outcome but so far, I have been very disappointed.

While a little on the short side, the game is excellently done, full of wit, and with tricky but on the whole logical puzzles. One downside is that some previous free instalments aren't bundled with it, particularly A Tale of Caos: Prelude, which sets up the backstory; Play that first.

Experia Games have a well-deserved reputation for very high-quality adventure games, particularly the epic A Matter of Caos series. This looks to be another in the making.

I've been waiting to see more from these devs for a while now and i'm not dissapointed! This is a point-and-click adventure game like they used to play in my childhood. It looks good, it sounds good, the story's interesting, the characters are funny, there's skippable minigames (which i definitely needed lol), there's a talking robot owl who is your BESTFRIEND!! (there also might be a secret room...)
I believe I played the prologue online and I noticed some very nice improvements!! I can't wait for the other acts, they're bound to be funny and entertaining as well!

Edit: Act II and III were as good as I expected them to be! There are certain (dialogue) mini-games which can be quite frustrating.. But there's a walkthrough in-game that point you in the right direction if you ever get stuck on them!
I'm defintely looking forward to more of the Caos series! (I hope to see Mr. G soon too!)

Super chill game by people who obviously love the genre, and strikes a great balance between holding your hand and letting you figure it out (i.e. UHS style hints on demand, but you have to clickthrough). Mini games are simple enough and skippable. Items are reusable and modifiable in a way that feels fresh for point and click. Also hope the next ones are longer (with skippable dialogue) but the tone and interface, puzzles, it's all really accessible and logical.

I like this game, and that's because of 5 reasons: (1) I love adventure games, especially point-&-click ones. (2) I prefer playing female protagonists. (3) I love Italy and this game was made by Italian developers. (4) Terry, the apprentice technomancer, has got three tools, which bring some interesting game mechanics with their own mini-games into play. Furthermore, she's got a mechanic owl, that will philosophize, give hints or help out physically. (5) The game is charming, funny and the protagonist has quite an individualized character and is very likeable. If you're stuck, there is a "walkthrough" included, which will help you moving on. But as the game wasn't that hard to play, I didn't need it. As the first part is quite a bit short for my taste, I hope the following two parts will be a bit longer.
The game needs to be polished, particularly in two aspects: Terry looks as she would be kind of stuck in each location, as she can't be navigated around by the player. She has a fixed standing point, and although she's moving arms, head and legs, keeping her in one place is quite uncommon for point-&-click adventure games. The other aspect are the question and / or answer options for the player (as Terry), they aren't centered, but quite aligned to the bottom, which makes it sometimes hard choosing the last option, and more often to be able to click on the arrow to move to the last option(s) (when not all of them fit into one box) - which is often only possible after several tries. Those two aspects do have kind of negative effects on the overall gameplay and involvement of the player. So I would really recommend to change them. Of course, every game can be improved, and of course more noises of things happening or being done and some more visual details would intensify the player's involvement into the story as well, but aren't as necessary as the two aspects mentioned before.
