This is perhaps the purest, most-straightforward and fun video game that uses exactly 1 button. It's a cool idea, but after the novelty wears off it's still super fun and addicting!

Switch 'N' Shoot is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. This mobile app is seriously problematic in terms of a trend of unacceptable regression from "indie" amateur developers who have proven unable to secure employment as professional developers. This trashware mobile app is positioned as a shoot 'em up but it's considerably less sophisticated than primitive 1970's and early 1980's arcade games like Space Invaders and Galaga. And, as a developer, if you try to sell a weak ripoff of 1980's games in the 21st century for profit, your career has ended before it began.

This shmup has a twist. The developer felt that Space Invaders was far too complicated for anyone to understand so they made it a one-button affair, more akin to an endless runner, but about as intellectually dumbed down as Flappy Bird. Seriously, this is like everything that could go wrong with game development (aside from RPG Maker), only worse. The existence of this crapware on PC is an insult to gamers. Remember, this is a for-profit product more dumbed down than the Nokia Snake game from the early 1990s. That was free. The guy seriously wants your money for this. No cap.

This was understandably removed from mobile app stores because of the craptastic quality and insulting nature of the "game", which this barely qualifies as.

From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result.

To make matters worse, while lazy, low quality pixel "art" has been used, making the game look bad, many elements of the game aren't done with pixelcrap... which accomplishes a couple of things. First, it shows the developers perhaps could have done better and they knew it, so that's a major screwup.

Secondly, it destroys any hopes the developer had of creating a "retro aesthetic" as their excuse for the lazy pixelart compromise... It looks completely inauthentic from a retro gaming perspective. Visually, this is a hamfisted mess, a dogs breakfast of bad visuals, and this kind of laziness and poor quality should never be foisted on gamers.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

The mobile app only displays in mobile phone style ultra-pillarboxed aspect ratio. This is just one of many indications this was developed to be a mobile app and not a serious PC game. It's not acceptable for developers to dump garbage like this on Steam when it's not even formatted or designed to run properly on modern PC gaming displays, to the point that this could be considered insulting.

The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just one-button iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself.

Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone.

These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this only happened once, around the same time that trading cards were applied to the mobile app... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many mobile apps like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

Switch 'N' Shoot didn't appeal much to the people who own a copy of the mobile app, either. It has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the mobile app didn't really capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for scoring 10 points, trivial to get, but less than 28 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the mobile app. Hardly a success story, gamers just weren't all that interested in the mobile app.

So, should you buy this mobile app? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Switch 'N' Shoot has the preposterous price of around $4 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. This is also competing with over 11,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
The developer both acknowledges that this is a mobile app (confirming that fact of my review without doubt), but seems upset about me pointing that out to gamers. See, it doesn't matter what order the developer launched this mobile app on which platform, the fact is that it's a mobile app, has all the qualities of a mobile app, was designed for the lowest common denominator of gaming platforms, and thus compares poorly to games designed for PC. This is useful for gamers to know, which is why I include this important information in my reviews whenever I catch a developer dumping mobile trash on Steam. But we must ask why the developer is so upset about being confronted with facts they themselves confirm. Guilty conscience perhaps?

With garbage 2D graphics (the developer couldn't afford a discrete GPU? Or it's just too hard?), and a mobile app aspect ratio (or does the developer think the monitor for his PC is meant to go on its side??), the idea that this was designed purely with PC in mind is complete garbage. The intellectual dishonesty displayed by the "developer" of this mobile app is a sheer insult to PC gamers everywhere.

Nothing in the developers pointless breach of Valve guidelines changes any of the objective facts of my review. My review stands unaltered. I cannot recommend this garbage mobile app to anyone.
