It is 1841, twenty years before the American Civil War. The North is entering the early days of industrialization, while the South remains bound to tradition and agriculture. With arguments on both sides over slavery and military expansion, this still young nation is on the brink of being torn apart.
Of Love And Sorrow is a 120,000 word interactive visual novel following the story of two young brothers from the South, separated by war, love and betrayal. Starting with their ambition to become officers at the Westpoint Academy, the choices you make will direct the story - their lives, their loves, their very destiny is up to you.
Who will you be? Are you an abolitionist, or do you fight to keep the slaves that work your family's plantation? Do you believe in the honor and duty of a cadet, or are you a gambling and whoring dandy? Will you stay faithful to your true love, Caroline, who is waiting for you to return from the Academy, or will you break her heart? And when fate forces you to choose between your brother and your duty, which will you choose?
Which side will you be on in the coming war?
Largely text-based, let the power of your imagination take you back to another time and place. Every decision you make has repercussions. Will you help a young slave girl against a mean overseer or look the other way? Are you a good cadet, or are you a trouble-maker? Whatever you decide, it´s your choices that will determine the story.

Super preachy. No actual history of the Mohr laws, which were the reason the south pushed for the constitutional convention where the 3/5th copromise was devloped. The Moore / Morh (Can't remember the spelling of the guys last name, which the group of laws were named after.) This is just a white plantation owners are evil monsters and there was.is no other reason for the war:( Yup, lets make an incredibly complicated war down to what was a war cry from the North in the 3rd year. Slavery arguement was that a rally cry, because the North was losing interest in the war and the sentiment was devloping just let them leave. The war was suppsoe to only take a few months, which as we know it didn't, whoever wrote this really needs to bother learning history beyong elementry school teaching if they are going to make games like this.
This has to be the worst purchase I have ever made. Ever. Of all the times I have purchased things (which is numerous times I assure you) this is the one I would most likely change. Because it was a terrible decision. I love history. I love reading. This story has, I believe, soiled my love of those things for the better part of our current month. It wasn't even very accurate or well written. It clumsily flowed into it's meaningless choices to the inevitable end, which seems to remain a constant no matter what decision "you" make. That was just enough to make me feel shitty for a good week or so in history class. If you are a member of Isis, hate babies, are interested in being an ignorant racist or if you simply like things that are terrible, (be it to simplicity of mind, spirit, or phyisique) this is for you. If you are interested in being a thoughtful human being, however, you will be sorely disappointed. Please and thank you.
Though this game would carry on into the civil war, mush have taken a wrong turn somewhere (probably shouldst have knocked that lass up).
Couldnt be bothered playing again to find out if there is a different route.

TLDR: Dry with historical flavor but really just a historical romance with soap opera grade drama here and there.
Going into options lead to a user interface dead end that forces you to force close the game. If you just play you will get overwhelmed will walls of text, wave after wave of them, with the chance to make a choice usually about three times per chapter or so. The U.S. civil war setting is not one I have a peculiar fondness for. The writing seemed to be respectful of the time period but at the same time it lacked a certain authenticity and it feels fairly obvious that the rendition of the author suffers from neocentric influences. I managed to reach the end without running into any scripting issues or design problems like game overs. The experience was bland and felt drawn out with too little interactivity. The romance and military developments of the protag as well as his relationship to his family were all secondary concerns to me as I found little reason to care for the protag to begin with. Interface was just black text on white background and simple buttons. Even though reading this is dry and boring, the actual playtime can be quite fast if you read in diagonal. Removed for declutter
I wasn't overly impressed. I thought the concept was great, and am a fan generally of "choices matter"-type games. But I couldn't really tell that the choices mattered all that much at all when any course of action one takes seems to lead toward the same unhappy ending.
It would be...generous...to call it interactive fiction.
(And...seriously...we need to talk about pacing of plot arcs. But not now.)
There was potential here. Just largely unrealized. :-(
Gaming and reading are pretty much my favorite ways to pass time so I picked up Of Love and Sorrow hoping to enjoy a melding of the two. Unfortunately, I can never make it more than a few pages at a time because the actual writing is atrocious. Very frequent mispellings and painful grammatical errors pepper nearly every page. As a former publishing industry employee I must say that it would have benefitted from hiring a freelance copy editor to, at the very least, handle the misused words and typos.
If I had paid only a buck versus the fiver price I might have given a lot of the issues a, "well that's what you get for only a dollar", pass but there's no way I'd pay full price again. I do not recommend this game.
There garphic error in this game making it unplayable.
This is an interactive novel, more than a game. Treat it as such going in and you'll love it. As a John Jakes/In Love and War fan, I adored it. Yes there were some typos, some historical errors and whatnot, but they're not hard to ignore. If they need an historian and/or a text editor for the sequel I'd happily volunteer my time. The story is great, I loved it, it kept me clicking through excitedly. Things they could add for an even better experience: A few more choices/choice specific options, sound effects, non-robot narration and a longer soundtrack.
I love visual novel and choice stuff. Here's my summary of this game.
1. Story, I kind of like this story at first. Intriguing plot. But it's more like a novel than role-playing novel. For one thing if you're writer for this kind of game, you shouldn't describe how your character feel(which is too many lines for this). You should describe what your character see, taste, touch, smell and everything. You let player feel all emotion and moral consequence themself.
2. Choice, not much of them. Mostly all you can do is clicking 'continue'. Choices only affect minor change but not ending, it's a BIG disappointment. If it's only one ending it shouldn't be visual novel at the first place. As far as I play through the end I don't see any skill training (Riding, shooting and so on) affact to any line of the game, then what it's for. You can't call it minor change, if it's just extra page to read.
3. Typo, lots of them.
I want to support writer but seriously this is not a game, it's more like a printed novel.
Despite an interesting concept and some decent writing I can't really recommend Of Love And Sorrow . The game seems more interested in telling you the writers story rather then exploring your own , I never really felt like any of my choices mattered which is personally a big turn off me in a game like this . If you like just reading without much input then you might enjoy this and I hope their next game takes my choices more into account . One positive note is that the price was very reasonable and I would consider buying another game if they put a little more work into it .
I really liked the basic premise of the game. I felt like the writer could have done a lot more proof reading, but that was the easiest thing to ignore. The choices that were available in the game were interesting, and I believe that the cast of characters were very consistent. Some choices had some pleasantly surprising outcomes.
However, the game runs out of steam almost in the very middle of the game. There is an event that happens that I felt completely disconnected me from the story because your character does something and you get zero choices in how to react. It seems like this was done to force a particular ending.
After this event it seems that choices almost completely disappear. The events in the first half of the game feel varied and compelling. The second half feels rushed and just a series of "continue"s.
I gave it a thumbs up because this game is one of the first of this genre I've ever played and I did find it enjoyable for the pricetag. However, I think there is a lot of disappointment toward the middle of the game that lasts until the end which is a shame.
Good game. I like the story, yet i hoped for more endings and more content. Also the war with Mexico was bit booring, because you didn't get to make many decisions in the war. Allready waiting for the sequel. Keep up the good work.
This is a very, very good game but quite short at least so far.
I loved the premise of the game and the whole idea of it, but I was hoping for more and I hope a sequel is in the making.
I hope to see more.
I like this game a lot! I like there is lot of choies in the game and the writing is fantasic amd it reads very well. The game had a few bugs after a card game but other than that it was very good. I did wish the game had more to do with the American Civil War and the ending could have bee more iintreststing. But I hope to see more games like this from them,
Absolutely god awful. The writer must have wanted to prove the Choice of Games people weren't the only ones who could ruin this genre.
Half way through, I briefly encountered entire pages filled with typographical mistakes. This I could forgive, if the story was decent, but it wasn't.
Overall, there were few choices. There were long stretches of continue -> continue -> continue. Choices fell into two categories. There were those that seemed to be of no consequence that generated little comment, or those that lead to spectacular consequences completely at odds with the choices made previously. At one point late in the story, I was reminded of an outcome for which I had made an opposite choice, and for which I had previously been told the opposite happened. Oops!
The character's behavior seemed disconnected from the choices made. I was often disgusted by his histrionics and lack of impulse control. I got the feeling the writer was determined to make him petulant or weepy no matter how many times I chose calm and reserved options. Because drama!
But the biggest flaw for me was that it was entirely too 21st century in its sensibilities and diction. The way these characters sometimes spoke to each other made it sound like they were going to the same suburban high school, not fighting in the Mexican American War. And the primary love interest practically "romantically" assaulted the main character. I kept thinking, sheesh - calm down, you bimbo. Obviously someone didn't read the campus guidelines on affirmative consent.
I recommend this story for people who like saucy high school dramas in historical settings. For everyone else, I cannot recommend it.
