Perfect example of how not to make a VR shooter, the reloading is awful, the virtual stock is shit.
Gun sounds are great. gameplay shit
Pros:
-Audio Quality
-Gun feel
-Short TTK
Cons
-Limited PVP and PVE game modes
-Ultimately extremely repetitive with little variation
-Subpar graphics
-Clunky healing and revive mechanics
Onward has potential but it feels squandered. Most everyone knows the graphical hit that came with Quest support, and there's been improvements but the game still looks pretty bad and feels weirdly over contrasted on my index, blacks are so black that enemies can blend into objects even in the daytime. It feels incredibly hollow compared to other offerings like Pavlov and Contractors that have a huge host of mod content and game modes, Onward in comparison is really lacking.
Ironically the thing I most hated about Onward (the sacrifice of PC fidelity to bring Quest compatibility) is what led me to buy it to have something cross platform to play with my cousin, but that is the only time I launch the game. I've owned it maybe two years now and have 15hrs while Pavlov has nearly 150.
There's just not much to do. The PVP modes are alright but get old quick, and most often we want to do PVE which is even worse. The PVE modes are different but functionally feel the same. The new mode is more of the same. If you played it once you experienced all it has to offer. I was hoping for a more dynamic experience but ultimately each mission reward offerings is basically the same every time, the first mission you always get a choice of two snipers and a shotgun. It's just so repetitive, and the missions end up being so boring because the difficultly scaling feels all over the place. It's either a cake walk that you spend the entire mission walking around just trying to find where the enemies are or it's all of a sudden challenging and there's no in between.
So most of it you are bored out of your mind until you get to the mission where you suddenly get evaporated, and each mission tends to be so short you spend half the time sitting at the loadout screen. You'll be 3 missions in and have like 4 kills and feel like you've really done nothing but you've completed 3 missions and spent 30 minutes for it. The Mercenary mode was supposed to give different loadouts and varying unique missions, but it ends up feeling the exact same each time.
Audio wise the game is great with the best audio of any VR shooter I've played, the guns feel good needing good control and trigger discipline, I like the short time to kill and high stakes, but the core gameplay loop is just not at all enticing.
Ultimately nothing draws me back to this game. I relaunched it and ran through it again for the sake of this review to see if anything had changed but it hasn't. Outside of my cousin wanting to play I never launch it, and it's a shame because I love the short time to kill, the audio, and the gun feel, but there's just nothing fun to do with it. None of the PVP or PVE game modes feel enticing they just feel so boring and repetitive.
I came back and played maybe an hour and just felt like I had wasted an hour because it was the exact same as every other time I played it. The PVE modes are just boring and lackluster and need a significant rework, and I didn't even bother with PVP because it's pretty well the same story there.
its ok, I didnt like the resolution/graphics.
Absolute blast, the feel of guns is superb. I didnt play teh previous "better" version. I am sad for that but as newcomer this game is ton of fun.
Honestly one of the best vr games. Simple, effective and fun gameplay especially with friends
I love this game so much. The graphics are great as well as physics. Definitley recomend.
Its a good game, however, there are no good game modes to play and the community is slightly toxic.
It is an early access game so I can't expect much, but for 15 Euros I would prefer Pavlov instead of this game.
not that great, outdated, and I dont think ever updated
had so much potential, I remember I think this had like Esports stuff with it
then suddenly everyone dropped it, and apparently the creators too
crashes when yu enter and makes it so steam vr does not work so you have to restart your pc WASTE OF MONEY
the 1.8 update was like slitting the throat of an already dying man
good game very good game good game buy
hopefully your teammates don't have 3 braincells rubbing together.
Greate shooter for vr in my opinion. cant say its better then pavlov.
Fun if you know what you're doing.
guns fun
when you dont get crossmapped at the beginning of each non-respawnable round by a pussy on a mountainside, its very fun
Really good VR FPS game.
Only problem in my opinion is the maps turning into potato environments because of Quest.
Quest compatability update ruined this game
This game is very fun if you get into a lobby where everyone talks and shit
absolutely flooded to the brim with cheaters.
Alright, I've been thinking about writing this for a few days, and now I will.
First, I wanna say that at the time I am writing this I have 38.9 hours on Steam, but I probably have similar amount of time on Quest.
This game is easily one of the best VR shooters I've ever played. The game has built-in motion/hand smoothing, so it's not like Pavlov where if you have shaky hands you won't be able to hit shit. The guns overall just feel so nice to hold and use, and reloading and firing has no problem, especially with the balanced recoil this game has. But obviously, that's what you're here for on VR shooters. The gun feel.
But for the actual game, it's still amazing with its maps, mechanics, and communication. Having a team of 4 - 5 players all frequently communicating makes this one of the most fun and immersive VR experiences out there. But, speaking of immersion, I'm pretty sure this game's optimization has been abandoned. No matter if you are using a Quest 3 (like me) with a native resolution of 2064 x 2208, on both Steam and Quest the max graphics is something like 1832 x 1920. Yes, even on SteamVR when you scale the graphics higher than that (I think), or on Quest 3 Native when the default resolution is 2064 x 2208. This may lead to the overall environment in the distance not being very immersive when they are at a lower quality.
The gamemodes are very-- well, tactical. You can escort a VIP to an extraction point while the enemy team tries to kill him (anyone can play as the VIP), you can upload a code to an uplink station while the enemy team tries to defend it, and you can make your way around enemy NPCs to an extraction point in the dark. Oh, and speaking of dark, every official map has its own night mode, where you have to wear night vision goggles as you fight for the objective. The night vision is very immersive with the digital filter attachment, which uses 3 loadout attachments/points (max is 20 in PvP, max is 30 in co-op), but it costs no attachments to use a green, white, or amber phosphor on the goggles.
There are 4 loadout classes:
Rifleman, specializing in automatic (and some semi-auto) mid-ranged rifles.
Specialist, specializing in more rare and unusual weapons with cool attachments (such as grenade launchers). Weapons are usually small and very fast-firing. Also the only class with SMGs available, pretty sure.
Support: Specializing in heavier weapons like LMGs for suppressive and powerful fire.
Marksman: Specializing in long-ranged weapons like sniper rifles, and even has equipment like air drones and ground drones.
Every class works on every official map (I say official map as this game does have workshop support for custom maps, which even has some very popular and high-rated map in the regular map-choosing queue) in its own special way.
Overall, if you wanna see a small and rare amount of annoying children, want fun, tactical, and suspenseful gunplay, large, open maps, and an occasional RPG or ballistic shield, then this is the perfect game.
However, this game does not get mass updates (which it SHOULD get) that would make it much more popular. There also are no stats, every game is just for fun and improvement, and I doubt that will ever change in the future considering this game is 8 years old. Still a really fun and very active game, you won't have an issue finding any games.
I don't know what to give it out of 10, but I can say:
It good. It fun.
Edit made 5 seconds after uploading: Oh, yeah, this game is crossplay with Quest.
fun game
Top 3 VR game fun to piss about with friends
I didn't play before 1.8 and never knew what they did to the game. The downgrade for the crossplay because of the quest standalone is actually crazy. It's so sad to see the possibilitys of the game pre 1.8 and all the content which was added after the downgrade. I can't believe how the devs thought this was a good idea!
I first played this game on quest and now it was my first time playing on pcvr, the first time I ever heard of this game was when I used to watch joshdub, this game looked so cool, but when I hopped on quest, it looked nothing like it did when I saw it before, hopped on pcvr, looks absolutely nothing like it did before, whats even worse is that its crossplay which is why the game is so shit now, couldn't go one game without a little kid failing to keep the team alive, also mentioning the fact that there was a cheater dead on the ground but still shooting his gun, I tried to shoot my gun but it didn't do anything. downpour what have you done.
1. META EXECUTION
2. main dev ran off
3. downgraded everything so it's worse
4. abondend
Join game, play terrorists, see rpg and c4, blow myself up, PC crash, restart.
Killed by Meta/Quest years ago. Used to have dozens of League teams and livestreamed competitions. Most of the playerbase abandoned Onward when the 1.8 update dropped in 2021(?). I stopped playing when my favorite maps were redesigned into Counter Strike abominations, and RPGs, tasers, and other arcade gimmicks were added. Now it looks like an Early Access 2017 VR demo.
GG Dante.
Great Game
Reviewing every game I've played in my Steam Library. Game 25
Looks like garbage, you can't make out anything at a distance. I thought it was my headset but basically they've downgraded practically everything visually to accommodate running it standalone on the quest.
PCVR version that last had decent graphics is abandoned and online play is completely dead for this version.
Lots of kids play this game.
Do not reccomend
The player base is either ultra sweaty nerds or fun guys you talk to you even when your on the enemy team
amazing game! i played on standalone for two years, i do not want to even guess how many hours... now on pcvr i like it even more. only bad thing worth mentioning, is, the squeakers... aka adolescent kids. thankfully tho, most stick to the skill-less mode "FREE ROAM" so just don't go there... trust me.
after over eight years now, and massive conflict with quest launch. this game is still alive and improving with updates still happening. thanks to the small, and really adaptive, innovative, and skilled dev team. far as people criticzing DPI, they have to understand meta fired a ton of the devs, and ported this game to quest. which is obviously not an easy process. also, really looking forward to april!
GAMEPLAY: this game has the best gun play, and realistic gameplay of any vr shooter out there. graphics are decent, out classed by most other vr shooters tho, but DPI continues to update that, which has gotta far better since quest lanuch. what i like most tho, is NO player tags, or team ID. you only get your tablet to check for teammates and by the tan or black outfits. thsi makes the game so inmersive and takes more skill to know friend over foe. also the core mode, uplink, has no comms after death. once your teammates are dead, its up to you, no kill count, no locations... noting. only what you have from before they died, (last callout made that is) the game does have an intimating skill difference, but join the discord and find lots of help!
unlike most games, onward puts you in CQC and long range, 400+ meter range, between maps. also, game modes, from fast pace (assault) to relaxed co-op, to comp uplink where a slight error or one well placed shot can cost you the round.
overall, if you like low ttk and more realistic type games onward is really you best and only option. 10/10 for me.
TLDR; onward is the best and only somewhat realistic tacitcal shooter.
Love this game, i play pub lobbies, comp lobbies, league and all modes (most people find one they like and stick to one). when i started playing vr i downloaded a bunch of awesome games and gave them good reviews, and then i found this game and i havent stopped playing it since, it says i have 42 hours but i actually got this on my quest first and now have probably over a thousand and still everytime i buy i new game it just doesnt hit like onward does
is good
I love playing Onward! They Keep improving the game and I will keep playing it.
sucks they made it look like shit to pander, still onward though
Super frustrating trying this game to run. Ive spent twice as much time troubleshooting as I have playing. Oculus is a failed console with terrible steam support. Onward is a reminder of how far away we are from decent VR games
The infamous 1.8 update ruined everything
DONT PLAY IT BRO its not worth it dont waste your nlife like me :3
One of the best mil-sim VR games i've ever played. Player base is still plenty so no problem with finding games. The community is (mostly) supportive and fun to play with. Also have modded servers to spice things up. Overall 9/10, come join and try it for yourself :D
Mikecrook21 cheats in this game. its sad that he doesnt have the skill required to play fairly. this really ruined my onward experience.
Long story short, Facebook/Meta/Quest and the infamous and controversial 1.8 update killed this worthless game. Used to be a great milsim and had lots of potential, but now It's not even a good arcade game, let alone a sim or milsim. Dante, the original developer, also left, probably after making some quick bucks from Facebook. Avoid!
Poor optimized, 3-4 seconds freeze is okay in this game
But hit registration in this game is best
one of the best pvp and pve vr games i have ever played solo or with a group, my only compliant my legs have not stoped hurting, every day is leg day XD 10/10 would recommend.
ikug
Joined the dc and started a poll about grip-pods/Bpods whatever you'd call them
Some how it got very popular and became a largish discussion.
Even talked to one of the devs at one point, fun
A man-child got pissy over it and started rage baiting
no one cared
man child reported the poll for one specific line
"Ive never had so much fun getting called racial slurs by little kids before"
Guess what, ONE, ONE mod the only TRANS MOD FUCKING BANS ME,
Never felt more betrayed by my own community before...., JK I don't care i had my fun
and met some nice folk. so i'm done venting, my review goes as follows
Great game, Great community, great devs,
Full price aint so bad
8 jewish priests out of 9.5 bread roles
TLDR: Saw game from years ago and finally got into VR this year. Game updates seem to have downgraded every part of this game from what I saw in Youtube videos years ago. While the devs seem to want to fix this in it's current state it feels lifeless and more like a VR light-gun game. Can't recommend in current state as other games have better features, some of which this game once had. Also had issues running the game even tho my pc was over min spec.
Graphics: 5/10 (Average for VR)
Gameplay: 4/10 (Could be fun PvP or with friends but other VR shooters feel a lot better)
Some friends and I got into VR this year and have been having a blast with Tactical Assault VR which is an amazing game, however this caused us to play it so much we just want more content as we know the maps like the back of our hand. This made me remember seeing Onward years ago when a bunch of Youtubers I watch played it. I figured I'd pick it up and give it a try as if we can get another Tactical Shooter for our group then it'd help the burnout of just playing one game. I was sad to learn that the game had a massive downgrade to work on standalone headsets but heard the devs were trying to fix it and figured I'd give it a go.
After playing I see why people are upset and to me the game feels lifeless, the AI just stand there, the game ran poorly on my system despite being well over min spec, and simple things like ragdoll being gone just made the whole thing feel like a lifeless shooting gallery. I played with settings but I just couldn't stop the stutters and loading issues despite having played games with much more going on on screen and better graphics. Overall it was just a disapointment to jump into this years after it's prime and not be the game people were excited about years ago.
Put all that together and I can't recommend this game as I feel other games do a better job of giving you that tactical shooter experience these days.
Onward currently unplayable due to visual stuttering and hand rubberbanding in game for my system, and I cannot find resources online to fix it. I used to play a lot of PVE and really enjoyed the graphics. After they updated it to include meta quest support everything took a dive and I set the game down waiting for improvements to the game that have never come. No other game in my library becomes unplayable after 5 minutes or when entering a new screen, but Onward consistently will rapidly flicker at a low frame rate, and reduce my field of view, while often soft "crashing" to a greyed out screen. It sometimes returns to normal, and often takes 5-10 seconds. Outside of game this happens and makes menu selection arduous, but in any game mode this is plenty of time for everything to go FUBAR and get you killed. Cannot recommend.
200 round pkm box lol
best VR game i got
