UBOAT

After a lot of tutorials i can finally play 100% realistic gameplay. GAme fun and interesting, developers put a lot of work into it, and it turend out almost perfectly!
Even though I haven't played this game for very long and I had it for quit awhile or so I still find it enjoyable to come back to and play when I can. Some of the perks I find that are really cool are, you can dock your submarine, have the crew disembark, then shut off all the lights and take a nap, I've done that a couple of time's. :)
The next would be divining into the water to find some cargo in sunken ships (certain missions ) although I think it would be cool to free dive on any mission, maybe even to plant explosives, underwater on ships in a harbor just like the Italy frogmen did in WW2. Anyway, I paid the full price on this game and it was well worth the money. I Highly recommend it!
interesting and beutifull looking submarine semi-simulator with a lot of varietty. Needs to add more stuff like different submarines or overalll mission varietty, just my opinion
There is still some bugs issue
Eg: I was able to manually spot the ship clearly using the periscope, but in the map, it was out of sighting range
Or, while chasing a convoy, i don't see any ship in the map as they were still out of range, but out of a sudden, i would end up in the middle of the convoy, surrounded by merchant ships and escorts.
But overall, fun game. Just need to keep updating and debugging
Great game. Seems hard at first but when you complete like 3-5 missions you know much. I have learned very fast how to take out a convoy and I do loads of port attacks. I highly recommend. I recommend for you to buy it when it's on sale as I did.
Good SIM in real time, this is a relaxing chill game for me. I don't play this as an action packed game (Vietnam Rising Storm or Star Wars Galactic Battle Front II for that) this is good for my Zen. Awsome music & sound effects bring me deep into this emersive simulation.
Very Immersive game with fantastic sense of progression, it took an hour or two after the tutorial to feel confident about things but now the game is taking off. Open sandbox feels alive as you're out on patrol, and the new damage model system makes encounters that much more dynamic. Overall 9/10 game
Beneath the waves, in the confined steel shell of my submarine, every order matters and every hesitation carries a price. UBOAT captures this tension admirably, immersing me in a world where discipline and careful planning are not just advantageous but essential for survival. Early patrols felt uncertain, a crew fresh from training struggling to find rhythm amid hostile seas. Yet soon enough, familiarity replaced doubt, and I began to relish each precise maneuver and silent stalk through enemy waters.
But as patrols grew longer, monotony slowly crept aboard. Midway through my campaign, hunting convoys became more chore than thrill, an endless repetition of firing torpedoes, resupplying at ports or distant Milchkuh support vessels, and returning to the fray. Historically authentic? Absolutely. Engaging in the long term? Less so. The late-war escorts guarding merchant convoys enforced cautious, distant attacks, reducing tactical variety to predictable engagements and consuming countless hours in repetitive cycles.
Then there's the curious loophole I've discovered, which feels less like commanding a U-boat and more like running a sneaky paperwork operation: quietly circling an empty ocean quadrant under time compression until command is satisfied that yes, targets have surely been hunted then sailing casually into an enemy harbor as if dropping by for afternoon tea, sinking stationary ships with all the urgency of filling out routine forms. It's efficient, amusing, and probably would earn a reprimand from Admiral Dönitz himself.
Still, the heart of the simulation remains undeniably strong. Adjusting the game's difficulty lets me experience submarine warfare exactly as I wish, and the visual authenticity combined with a functional soundscape deepens immersion. True, navigating menus on a 4K display can be cumbersome, but it’s a minor frustration in an otherwise exceptional portrayal of WWII naval warfare.
UBOAT offers a compelling journey beneath turbulent seas, rewarding those who appreciate realism, discipline, and historical detail. Despite occasional repetition and a few quirky loopholes, it stands as one of the most immersive U-boat simulations available today. With patience, strategic finesse, and careful resource management, you'll find yourself willingly submerged, patrolling oceans filled with both danger and quiet triumph.
Great game, providing flexibility of playstyles ranging from "Pretty much Arcade" to "This is a pretty realistic sim" and everything in-between. Managing the crew is a nice touch imo, and gives a sort of "Bomber Crew" vibe that i actually really enjoy.
Another thing I'm really liking is the opportunity to upgrade and modify your U-Boat in a given campaign, and that time moves on throughout the war as you go. I was expecting a "Mission 1: Do X, Mission 2: Do Y" type of campaign, but no, every playthrough is persistent and builds upon your past successes and, I assume, failures.
Graphics are great, game seems decently optimized.
I'm really enjoying this one.
Very fun game and when there are Allied ships (enemys) it really makes the game a challenge.
They said the game would have controller support by 2020 but it still doesn't have it:
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/494840/view/1608270539800851503
Questions about this are ignored and Steam won't give a refund because it's been too long.
Its a fun game, and maybe worth it now they dropped the price but so buggy! I have never played more than 20 minutes because it crashes/locks that often. I've turned down the graphics to average/low and it made no difference. you need to save manually every 10-15 minutes for it to be even half decent.
Yes, absolutely, 100%. It's a little hard to describe in this format, but there are these moments in the game where you can almost feel nothing but your heart beating, warship props all around and on top of you, depth charges going off nearby... moments where time seems to almost stand still, even though it's actually (apparently) been thrown into fast-forward and when you leave the game it's been 6 hours since you started playing. Invigorating, escapist, and a very enthralling simulation, UBOAT is... awesome.
If you really want to have a clue as to what I'm talking about, check out some videos on YouTube, or better yet: buy the game and try it yourself!
Greatest sub-sim I've ever played. It's realistic as it gets on top of being able to tweak the game play and difficulty to your comfort. On top of beautiful graphics that surpasses many other games of this genre.
If you're interested in WWII, and like a good challenging single player experience, I recommend getting this game. There's also unlimited user-generated content you can add to your game play through the workshop as well.
In the future I'd like to see a multiplayer feature, Allied submarines, as well as passenger ocean-liners that are sinkable.
This is a game to test you, this is a game that is difficult to get going at first but slowly and surely its getting better. I struggled with this game from fresh but i am now enjoying it 60 odd hours in.
Think of it as the underwater hell let loose if you will, there is lots more to it than just straight kills etc.
The game in general: fun. Learning how to play the game: NOT FUN. I wish that this game actually had a tutorial that EXPLAINS things and doesn't just give vague instructions and then throws you in. I had to watch many tutorials in order to understand the game but then...... all these things pop up on the screen like "oh no not enough air submarine exploding". I mean seriously, Hearts of Iron 4 is easier to learn than this game.
Why does time compression constantly put me in a situation where the hostile ships just spawn next to me since the game didn't register their presence until after coming out of time compression. It's like having random hostiles teleport directly to you. Not only is it immersion breaking its extremely annoying...
The learning curve is quite steep but there are excellent resources on YT (looking at you Wolfpack345) that really showcase the fun and excitement that this game can offer. Anyone remotely interested in the topic or even just the Das Boot novel/film will enjoy themselves playing this, but I do recommend watching the aforementioned resources.
The dynamic from hunter becoming the hunted can shift incredibly fast as was the case back in the day. The excitement and satisfaction of sinking an enormous enemy warship or a good portion of a convoy are just as great as that of after a grueling 2 hour affair escaping Allied destroyers and making it home.
Some parts of this game feel clunky and hard to memorize but there are loads of mods to help you with your specific issues.
A Worthy Successor to Silent Hunter 3
UBOAT v2024 is an excellent submarine sim, packed with mods, frequent updates, and deep mechanics. It truly feels like a modern successor to Silent Hunter 3.
The immersion is top-notch—managing the crew, stalking targets, and surviving in the depths never gets old. The UI can be a bit tricky, and there are still some glitches here and there, but overall, the experience is fantastic.
If you love WW2 submarine sims, this is one of the best out there.
8/10, Tauchen, Tauchen!
an excellent game that truly brings the world of submariners to life. it can be monotonous at times but i understand theres only so much you can do to add variety to a historical game without making it into a fantasy.
Just as a note, this review will cover my experiences on this account and another that I have since lost access to. I had this game since early access and I had to learn the ropes on my own. This game isn't the easiest to get into as it caters to a rather niche audience. While having experience from playing Silent Hunter games is helpful, UBOAT adds quite a few mechanics of its own. The game does have a UBOATpedia (game manual) which does covers the mechanics. Regardless, the game definitely has a learning curve. I would advise watching how others play the game first as that was how I learned how to play the game myself.
Regardless, the game is a lot of fun when you really get really deep into it. That is if you are a naval buff or someone who says "Tonnage for the Tonnage gods!" The patrol missions do get repetitive at times. And yes there are bugs. Not as much as there used to be but they're still there. For example, sometimes when I sank a ship, sometimes it would refuse to go down with it stern or bow pointing straight at the sky at a 90 degree angle. And if you sink a docked ship, well, let's say I accidentally started the Swedish space program. However, the devs are fairly active in squashing bugs and the last patch just addressed one that I had a constant problem with.
The only criticism I have is that there isn't too much dev support for mods that go beyond modifying some values on an Excel spreadsheet. I like seeing a lot of different ships in my games and well, UBOAT doesn't quite meet my standards. Problem is, the 2025.1 patch created ship compartments and unfortunately it would seem that the modders simply don't have the tools to make 'em. What I want to see is more communication between the game devs and the modders. There doesn't have to be a set of super refined modding tools as that can wait until later. However, I do expect something like the "rubber duck" approach where devs describe their approach to making the mechanic which may help modders get around the issue at hand. In other words, documentation would be helpful.
Regardless of the faults, there is genuine fun to be had.
Hi , I like this game becouse its like Silent Hunter and that was a good serieris of games. Only thing missing is Amazing grafics.
Really good spiritual successor to the Silent Hunter series. Only comments I have would be that sometimes the route plotting is a little wonky and likes to route onto shoals for no reason (e.g. plotting a route out of wilhelmshaven will sometimes just end up grounding you). Also it's maybe in slightly poor taste to have a mission to sink the HMS Royal Oak which actually was sunk at the cost of over 800 lives in the exact same fashion in real life- it's a good mission but maybe could have just given it a fake name. Not a big deal though, at least to me.
I bought two books, and watched several videos, spent probably 20 hours researching U-boat tactics and how to operate my U-boat. I wanted to replicate (in a much lesser degree) the knowledge an actual U-boat crew might have received so I could better understand the game I was about to play and discover a greater appreciation for the men that served in them. Now I'm certainly no Historian, nor a general in any military, but I am certainly no stranger to strategy as well, with 300 hours playing Hell Let Loose and studying WWII tactics I thought I'd be able to breeze my way through this game on the hardest difficulty with all the realistic settings with brainpower alone, but that's not exactly what happened. On my first patrol nothing of note really happened, on my second patrol I got shot at by a gunboat and had three casualties (One dead and two wounded) on my third patrol I sunk a merchant ship with my AA gun because I was too close for torpedoes it wasn't pretty and took 700 bullets and about three in game hours to sink. I also sunk my second vessel which was a gunboat that had given me much trouble before, this time without any damage or casualties. But just minutes after this I got ambushed by 4 ships at once I wasn't hit by the gunfire but being in shallow water it was the depth charges that got me. I desperately tried to fix the damage done to my ship but the water was up to our mouths so fast. It was at that point I knew we were dead. It was also very sad, knowing that real people experienced this. I watched as one by one my crew drowned, it felt so very unfair, nothing in my 'training' could've prepared me for this. But alas war is war, no matter if you're holding a rifle or operating a submarine. I'd like to say it was some kind of glitch that made those boats appear seemingly out of nowhere but the men serving aboard those boats would've never had the luxury of knowing either. Either way it was a gut wrenching, heart pounding experience, all 15 hours of it lol. There are of course some bugs with the map that were frustrating, but all in all a good experience.
Would I recommend this game? Absolutely. I am a major history buff so obviously this game interested me off the cuff, there aren't too many Uboat games available today to sate the appetite of a true underwater warfare experience, so having this one come out is fantastic. In addition, the devs are extremely active both with patches and fixes and receptive to community feedback as well as open to assisting those with issues, which is not common, especially with what had been an Early Access game.
+ Extremely fun WW2 submarine simulator, with the ability to make it as realistic as you wish.
+ Developers who are active and open to feedback and provide constant updates to make the game even better
+ Game has missions that are historically accurate with links to sources where you can find more information about said missions (a really cool feature!)
Great game. To be honest I never thought that I'd play such a game but it is really fun and quite captivating
Hmm
Look good, but its kinda weird.
Its not a sub commander sim.
UI is kinda messy and inconsistent. Lots of micromanaging.
Really tried to get into it, but unability to turn on the compressor put me off.
Goin back to modded SH3.
Will take a look again in a year.
I bought this when my Silent Hunter 5 finally stopped working with the latest windows update. I really like this new game and find it better than the Silent Hunter series. The crew does their jobs without me having to tell them for the most part. So you can truly be "Captain" of the boat. Graphics are good and play so far has been challenging, but not impossible to figure out.
It would be nice if there were ways to set more standing orders. Like whenever the ship surfaces, turn on the air compressor to refill the reserves. If you forget, can be a problem.....
But on the whole, it's an excellent game!
Great game! Could only be better if it had multiplayer
A good game for history buffs. Love the tension of knowing the enemy is above me, and searching, but unable to zero in on me. Put on Das Boot and just play!
Very complicated for someone coming from games made for troglodytes, but it's somewhat fun trying to learn how things work. Unfortunately, the game doesn't teach you enough from the tutorial and a lot of things you have to go to YouTube or look up in the u boat encyclopedia to learn. I just wish the game did a better job of teaching you how to play it.
just really enjoy this games and like how it is always been updated and improved.
45 yrs later and we finally got a movie tie-in game for Das Boot
Jokes aside this is a very good game that I expected to refund and ended up getting really into naval warfare
Needs A LOT more tutorials for new people who are not coming from other games but aside from very solid mechanics, the game is utterly stunning at times. Especially for an indie studio!
The first person mechanic is extremely cool and really lets you get immersed but needs a bit of work as there are a lot of glitchy animations and artifacts that occur (Not nearly enough to be take away from the vibes)
Overall, on this current sale. It is great value for money
Its a really good game, it feels really immersive even on the easiest levels. Very fun and highly recommend!
This is truly the Sub Sim which I enjoy the most. It has its flaws, in particular the lack of variety in targets and ship models, however, the amount of effort, with each update in recent years, has been pure dedication to making this game a real labour of love reward winner in my eyes. I look forward to every update, and the DLC's which will come in future.
Here's hoping to the following:
- More Variety in Ship Models - i.e. multiple different battleships and carriers
- Type IX (In process of being made, looks awesome!)
- More Campaign Areas
- Playable Japanese Subs (Probably won't happen but a man can dream!)
Best sub-sim out there at the moment. lots of choice of the realism settings means you can set it to what is most fun for you. Runs very well too even on older systems.
I'm sure its a fun game and seems well made. Just way too much of a learning curve for a casual gaming experience. I don't the time to teach myself all the math and different stations to sink one ship. doesn't make it a bad game tho
Very enjoyable, i spend hours just getting to the mission zone (though i could fast forward more if i wanted). Very granular settings to control the realism and simulation. the tension of war is palpable when on missions and you can feel the fragile nature of your boat and the actions you take.
So far the only issue i have had is that the automatic course through narrow areas will send you into the shore, manually plotting a course through narrow areas is necessary, if you get stuck you're best off just reloading. at one point my boat was inexplicably sent into space from hitting shore, which was amusing, but has only happened once so far.
You will have plenty of time to think and strategize, and at more realistic settings you can manually do almost everything.
I had been interested in this game for a while but was hesitant because you can only play as Nazi Germany. Let’s be honest—playing only as the fascist side who’s also the nation most directly responsible for the Holocaust can be a real vibe-killer. (Controversial take: fascism and genocide are bad.) That said, I eventually picked it up on sale, and I have to admit—I was not disappointed.
This game is genuinely incredible. The immersion is unmatched—you can play in first-person and can engage in a wide range of tasks throughout the submarine, making you feel like a skipper or crew member. One of the game’s standout features is its attention to realism. Before diving in, you can customize the realism and difficulty settings to match your preferences. For those looking for the most rewarding experience, I highly recommend playing with higher realism settings, as they add an incredible sense of authenticity and tension.
One of my favorite features is the ability to control time. You can play in real-time or speed things up when needed, preventing the game from feeling overly drawn out. This flexibility keeps the gameplay smooth and engaging while still maintaining a sense of scale and pacing appropriate for a submarine simulator.
Another feature i love is the wolfpack. A feature that as far as i understand works by sending nearby non-milkcow subs to join you when you spot a convoy. These subs can be given orders from the world map in the form of movement orders, target commands, and picking a stance from the three which are attack, defend, and retreat. One way i hope the devs might improve this mechanic would be by making it feel a bit more present in the game. One way this could be done is by adding a wolfpack skill tree or just an individual perk for it. Another thing i would ask of the devs is to keep working on that optimization as the game can really lag at times especially when you switch between any of the main views i.e. first person, third person, and the sub management view.
That all being said, don’t let me fool you into thinking this game is easy or forgiving. It’s a challenge, and at times, it can be downright frustrating. Picture this: after carefully sneaking into position to line up the perfect shot on a battleship, you enter all the targeting data…only for the ship to turn and your torpedo to miss or maybe it didn’t turn and you miss because you messed up the targeting data. Or worse, everything lines up perfectly—you fire one torpedo aimed right at the ship’s furnace, followed by a second at a slightly different angle—and both are duds. (Yes, this happened to me on my first attempt to sink a battleship. I’m still screaming about it.) Or maybe you got spotted by another ship in the convoy. There’s a lot that can go wrong in this game and I mean A LOT! But here’s the thing: the game isn’t unfair. Those moments of failure are a direct result of its dedication to realism, and that challenge is what makes every hard-earned success feel so incredibly satisfying. The taste of revenge when you finally succeed? Oh, it’s sweet.
Despite my initial reservations, this game exceeded all expectations. It offers a deeply immersive, complex, and rewarding experience that keeps you invested for hours. If you’re a fan of simulator games with historical depth(😂) and a steep learning curve(😂), this is an absolute must-play.
10/10 would recommend.
Thanks for the patch from january 20th,
now the ships sink more realistically but the crew is still stuck in the turret and no member can use the ladder, decoys are not ejected, torpedoes are labeled as miss even though they hit 3 seconds later and the ship sinks, orders are ignored or simply canceled because the distance is apparently too far.
It's no fun anymore
Infinite loading comes on top
Love this game since early acces, they are still updating regularly. Good game studios still exist! Nothing but praise for the game and the studio. Highly recommend for any sim player.
Very good Strategy game and is VERY realistic, so give it some time all you will get good in the game. Oh yea the Tutorial is a must or then u wont understand how to even manage ur uboat Bye 👍
Best uboat game out right now. A good amount of fun. You can make the game as easy or realistic as you want to.
This game is addictive. It has micro-management, strategy, sudden bursts of combat after hours of enjoying the sunset in real time... the only thing I wish it had was multiplayer - as in, if the sub was manned by your RL mates, and fleshed out with bots where needed. That would be awesome. The game doesn't have it though so oh well. It's still good. It's still getting worked on, which is great. As far as keeping me occupied and not thinking about anything else when gaming, I already got 22 hours out of it, and it's cheaper than a movie. How many movies you know go for 22 hours?
Very immersive and realistic. Graphics and animations are very good.
This game is incredible! One of the best games i've ever played! The look, feel and scape of the game is fantastic. It really emulates the U-Boat's of WWII so well and really captures the whole vibe. Literally feels like your there on the boat with them. It really captures the stress and urgency of the situations the crew had to deal with. Highly recommend to anybody. Worth every penny spent! (If not more!)
I wish that it would autosave more often but other than that its a great game for the price.
Great fun!! There's been a few bugs/issues since the launch but have swiftly been resolved over time. Glad I stuck with it and I'm very much looking forward to any upcoming DLC.
I attempted to play the latest of the silent hunter games a few years ago, but for some reason could not get the game to work past the loading screens and was keen to buy a similar iteration. I do not know how it compares but the fact this works is a bonus.
15 hours in and started with a casual approach. It has just the right balance for you as the player to have as much or little input as you want. You can go first person and control any of the officers on the boat, and control their stations whenever you want. You can also let the crew manage themselves, and it takes no effort to switch between different game plays styles.
The patrol missions were a little tricky at first but after a few attempts and learning the game this became gradually more fun and engaging. Especially when figuring out how the mechanics and camera works. Nothing more fun then watching a torpedo heading towards a merchant vessel with a man having a smoke on deck not aware of the impending doom.
They just got it right. The missions may become repetitive, but the campaign seems to be varied enough and due for my first ship upgrade shortly so sure it will keep me entertained for a short while. Picked up on sale for a bargain so will be happy for 40 to 50 hours quality gameplay and will be impressed if it keeps me engaged for longer, and sure if I really get into the more simulated elements could be potentially a game I come back to, especially if they release some really engaging missions.
Graphics are good and able to play on my PC at the highest settings, but my computer is less than a year old, mid to top range. Buy it, you won't regret it, and be as engaged or casual as you want with it. A few moments have definetely put a smile on my face this winter.
Great game so far. I have the crew set to auto so they just do their jobs until I tell them otherwise. Good tutorial in game but very basic, making it a steep learning curve on your first mission. You can save as often as you like so it’s ok to fool around & find out.
