Nice
Real quick - I didn't play Dungeons I and II, but I did play and beat Dungeon Keeper I and II many years ago.
In this game you are the Absolutely-Final-Boss-Of-All-Bosses managing a dungeon to rid the world of do gooders. You slap around the little snots to eh...inspire them to work harder as they fulfill your devious plans. Drawing clear inspiration from Dungeon Keeper (1997), it's sequel, and of course Dungeons II - while adding some extra touches on top.
As you work through the campaign (or skirmish mode) you'll slip into a mode that just comes natural to you and your playstyle. Want a dungeon full of traps to take care of invaders without lifting a finger? Go for it. An army of orcs and goblins? Sure. An army of demons more your thing? They're happy to oblige. Or maybe you prefer the company corpses, the undead will groan with compliance. Or a healthy mix of all of them since it really is entirely up to you and you're not forced to choose or exclude. But managing a dungeon isn't enough for evil. Good must be conquered! With Dungeons III you will have to send forth your armies to the world above and force all living things to live in shadow and flame. Burn the thatched roof cottages!
And that's a colorful way to describe the gameplay loop. The game is full of humor and charm. While the story is nothing deep, original or profound, it doesn't aim to be. I found myself rolling my eyes at some jokes while getting a good laugh at others. I enjoyed that the voice actors hammed it up plenty and likely had a lot of fun.
At the beginning of every level you start in your dungeon. The game gives you a grace period of time to start out before it starts sending small waves of heroes to destroy the dungeon heart. If the dungeon heart falls, game over, mission failed. Try again. Each level the underground space you have to dig out will be different and sometimes you'll dig out a surprise which could be treasure or enemies. Difficulty varies from mission to mission but ultimately it just comes down to the individual and skill. The quicker you can setup, the easier a mission will be no matter what. There are some missions that require speed. There are achievements that will take real effort. Meaning you have to go out of your way to accomplish a challenge. Most of the more difficult ones will be time based if you're an achievement hunter. These are just for fun and to challenge yourself, always remember these are not required and to prioritize what is fun FOR YOU.
Breaking the gameplay down further you're introduced bit by bit more options for your dungeon as you progress through the campaign. And there are a lot of options (dungeon rooms, creatures, research, etc) so this trickle of information I found to be just right as I progressed. In Dungeons III you are more of an influence than having direct control while in the dungeon. You make the plans and those plans will be prioritized but your creatures will go about their business on their own. Fulfilling their needs (sleep, hunger, relaxation) or working. Above ground, the game switches and becomes a real time strategy-lite game where you have complete control over your army. Oh yeah, you also have a variety of spells at your fingertips to further influence the world.
There are ways to strengthen your army and the traps in your dungeon. Some work stations need a specific unit to operate which at first might seem like you're being spread too thin but it all serves the loop to buildup your forces to eventually overtake your adversaries. There are a few missions that are time sensitive but the majority of them you are free to play at your leisure. Unless you're going for achievements, the campaign is not too difficult and quite accessible. I'd certainly recommend it to any fan of the management genre of games, especially if you played Dungeon Keeper back in the day. Given how often Dungeons III goes on sale with all the DLC, absolutely worth the money. Once I complete all the DLC for this game, I will be playing Dungeons I and II.
good
Its ok, very light hearted version of dungeon keeper, while its balanced for the amount of creaturs it gives you, I would have liked to see something a little more larger scale
Thats whatver though. Opinion...
Kinda sucks they developer has a sexual obsession with thalya, why is my evil "right hand man" cute? its weird.
Anyway good game.
I have played dungeon keeper 2 back in time with great pleasure. This game nails it. It has increased the joy just in a right way.
I originally intended to post a large review, but the truth is, is that there's so much wrong with both this game and Dungeons 4 that I could write an essay on it! Don't get me wrong, there's some good innovations in this 'Dungeon Keeper' style game, but there's a lot of bad in the gameplay itself. Dungeons 4 is overall better than this one, so if you've played that I wouldn't bother with this one.
I usually don't post negative reviews unless a game really annoys me or is unfair, but the level Two Sides of the Med on Hellish difficulty has clearly not been tested. (I suspect the same with Dungeons 4 levels on hard mode, which are so brutal you need to use an exploit with the slime ball trap to push the invading heroes back.). Unfortunately on this game there is no such exploit. It seems to me that the heroes invade your dungeon depending on how many creatures you have, although I could be wrong. The issue is, is that on this particular map there are an unusually large amount of hero bases. This combined with the fact that you need lots of creatures to both defend the dungeon and attack on the overworld means that you get raped!
Just buy it. All the fun of dungeon keeper with a nice interface and funny dialogue. A friend and I have played the whole campaign on coop seamlessly.
This game turns the need for your brain to want sleep, off. I've been having SO much fun with this, way more then I was expecting. Completely recommend this game.
No achievements for the dlcs
Very much in the spirit on Dungeon Keeper, but with more over the top humour. The voice acting / narrating is especially fun. Do NOT expect a very serious game.
Worth every cent! Get all DLC!
Compared to 2nd this game is just horrible only good thing about it is
1: now you build rooms for your unit like dungeon keeper
2: now you build Turkey Farms like dungeon keeper
3: now you play with all race at the same time
4: now the campaign is CO-OP
for the things i dont know
1: you now have a Hero
2: the narrator is as funny is always
now for the bad
1.0: less units than the first one 38 VS 17
1.1: D2 had 13 units per factions vs 17 however you used all of them compared to D3 where i feel i only use 1 of the factions of units since i need to choose what upgrades i go for so i can have as litte as 5 units (Demon) per playthrough
1.2: you cant upgrade your units anymore
2: no upgrades in the rooms anymore instead you have it in a window
2.1: less upgrades no unit specific upgrades as the old one had now its +% per click for the faction you took
3: the Narrator does not get angry on you anymore for being slow or going the wrong way i found that hilarious in the last one :p
Accessibility is bad here. I can't pause and check things out. I can't slow time. The game constantly throws 2-3 things at you in two different levels of your dungeon. The controls for you units are different on the different maps. It's just a cluster of BS and I just want to build a dungeon. The creative design to make every character complain about the narrative is a choice that's for sure. It just get super old listening to the same narrator trash talk you for the third time you run a mission which you lost because everything in this game can just walk into your dungeon a punch your dungeon heart. Even if you set up defenses you have to set them up on two to three entrances, then grab the guards assign them, then assign another group for your attackers, then don't forget to let the off guard duty to eat or they won't be guards anymore, even though sending them for food makes them not guards, which makes you wonder what good these guards are actually doing making you do even more work, to hope the right units are there when the good guys show up. Even then, there is a really high chance they will lose as your idiot minions always attack the tanks first and will ignore healers unit everything else is dead. No matter what upgrades you get, it's just more work. It's more stuff. I have no idea how this is supposed to be a solo experience.
Dungeon Keeper with surface assault.
I haven't even started on the DLC but as a dungeon management game it's stood the test of time. It's a lot of fun, very silly stupid and aware of that, and got me cackling like an evil overlord about things like slapping chickens and throwing minions off cliffs. 10/10 would terrorize the lands of Good again
awesome
Love it, finally I can be myself
Very nice game
Thalya is soo bad bro 10/10
good game lots of fun.
it is a really fun game
It is rather mid, but there is not much competition in the dungeon keeper genre so it is servisable.
I started on hell difficulty right away, because Dungeons 2 felt way too easy to me, and finished the main campaign on it.
It was kinda too simplistic still. At first, you start it, you try to play slow and develop your dungeon, but you are quickly overwhelmed by constantly growing waves of high lvl enemies. Then you realise, ok I just rush them with basically starting army instead, and that solved the majority of the game for me. Just do the same thing about 20 times and you win the game.
Basically only two missions in the campaign asked for some adjustments. Both in the very end. One was hardcoded for anti-rush - they barely attack you if you don't attack them, but start pushing from all sides if you do, so you have infinite time to dig-in. And one mission required to rush objective instead of fully clearing the overworld, which is basically just rush harder. And there are couple of no base missions, but those are kinda easy by design in all strategies anyway.
So the game doesn't really offers you the situations to use the tools it gives you, and it all feels rather badly thought out and clunky.
Writing is too riddled with direct references to other IPs. It will age very fast, like in 10 years noone will get what they yapping about. And it kinda wasn't too klever to begin with, just memberberries basically. Other then that it wasn't too bad.
Intermission "cutscenes" are a cheap parody of cheapness, there is no style to it, it is just bad. Just render some sketches on the game engine if you don't have budget like DK2 did. Anything would be better.
Guess I'm not a fan of cartoonish style here in general, I'd like the game to be more dark, bloody, sexy and violent.
But for the time being I'll have to stick to what I can get. Despite all mentioned above, I'll by the next game, Dungeons 4, but I'm waiting for at least 70% discount on that.
Fun game. Lots of corny jokes and popculture references. After playing Dungeons 4 it feels slower and lacking all the QOL in 4. Still good though.
A bad parody of the Warcraft series.
This is the only Dungeon Keeper remake out there that is even better than the original Dungeon Keeper. Enjoyed this game a lot.
Kind of like the old Dungeon Keeper games. Goofy humor and overall pretty fun!
An interesting RTS game with a lot of humor and pop culture references and parodies of fantasy games, seriers and MMOs
You turtle and tower defense, build up a strong army and then go to the surface to defeat the enemy (good guys)
Some levels last a bit too long 1hour to 1hour 30m but it's all good fun

love the old fashioned game play
This is not the Dungeon Keeper you are looking for.
The dungeon in this is only a means to get your creatures ready to raid the surface.
The Gameplay is not bad, I enjoyed playing it but maybe wait for a sale. For a game this old it's a bit pricey.
But!!! You have to be OK with incredibly cringy writing. The voice acting is actually good which makes the dialogue/narration even worse, ironically, because the voice actors are completely leaning into the terrible script.
A fun, albeit simplistic dungeon keeper like with light rts elements.
I love watching the succubus go to work in the torture chamber and hearing that whip crack.
I liked the narriator, he's pretty funny.
the unit commentary reminds u of warcraft 3.
I mean... the gameplay isn't bad. But the writing is sooooo bad. It's insufferably self-satisfied. Like being trapped in a room with someone who things they're *soooo funny*, but are actually an idiot, punctuated with frequent stale pop-culture references. Like image a dumber version of Seth McFarlane at his worst.
