1/2 RTS, 1/2 city builder, 1/2 tower defence

"that's too many halves!"

Yes it is and that game suffers for it. Think of all the fiddly, annoying parts of each of these types of games and this game has them. You are much better just playing a dedicated RTS, city builder or tower defence than this jack of all trades master of none.

Easy, Easy, Easy, Easy, im****ingpossible. WTF I understand difficulty scaling. I get the idea that not every game is easy. I don't want always easy. The ramp up is a ****ing hockey stick curve with too many different places to juggle and no resources once it decides you had too easy a time of it. Oh and the Fing narrator. I want to team up with good to kick his @$$.

An incredible game, I do not understand why folks get upset by the narrarator/story. He is well done, as he has been for every installment thus far. I love this series. I was hesitant initially due to the reviews but, I am glad I decided to give the games a shot. Wonderful so far. DLCs are generally fun, though sometimes I feel could benefit from a slower tempo to allow time to enjoy the dungeon build and map exploration/playthrough.

I wish there was a 'buy it for 5 bucks' option when reviewing games, as opposed to just 'yes', and 'no', because that's exactly what this game deserves.

The third game in the series didn't change a lot of things; you still have a dungeon to build in, the enemy will try to invade your base, and your army has to occasionally hit the surface to do missions. This formula, which was flimsy in the previous game, remains unchanged; and so does the fact that radically changing controls every time you travel between the surface, and the underground still feels very awkward. There are a lot of things in the game like this, with varying degrees of importance that don't mesh very well.

Speaking of awkward, it can be used to describe most things in this game, ranging from dialogue, to game mechanics. The UI is user-unfriendly, constantly making you look, and click at things on different parts of the screen for no reason. A lot of the menus are totally redundant, and could've easily been made into one singular, big menu. Picking your minions up, and putting them down is also clunky. Even the act of commanding your army to exit your dungeon seems half-assed. Sometimes, a couple of units will be left out by accident, because the way you do it is by dropping every unit you want to leave for the surface into a gate, which sometimes isn't big enough for all your units.

Most things in this game seem to be poorly thought-out. Everything takes forever for no good reason, for instance, although at least it's significantly better than the second game. Your workers take too long to build traps, certain timed objectives are too lenghty, and so on. Also, you're forced to use military units (instead of your workers) to build certain things. So, you'll have to split them between defending your dungeon, attacking targets on the surface, and working. It's as awful as it sounds. Everything is super expensive for no reason. Certain resources are too scarce. And so on, and so forth. Ironically enough, however, the game is still braindead easy. It's a strategy game made for babies, and people with baby minds.

Last, but not the least, the writing. It's legitimately the worst I've ever seen in a videogame. Once again, much like in the second game, the narrator won't shut up, except this time, he's in the company of the main protagonist, an evil sorceress you control. They try to outwit each other during dialogue, and it's actually the worst thing ever. They also make direct references to nearly every other piece of mainstream media, NONSTOP. "Oh, this is just like with Bilbo and the ring, no wait this isn't The Hobbit", is the average line of dialogue you're constantly bombarded with. Also, every one of your units have 'unique' names, but instead of being appropriate for the setting, they're names such as, "Kayty Peury", "Lady Gargar", and so on. It's borderline juvenile, and they seem to think they're making the next "The Room", by being unabashed with references, and cringe in general. Well, they aren't. They're just making shit.

Tl;dr Much like the first two games, it's a Frankeinstein of cringe, bad game design, and plagiarism.

Very much enjoyed the game. The pop culture references are hillarious. The entire story and flavour texts are goofy in a very charming way.

I would like to especially call out the voice acting, it was an integral part of the enjoyment for me. The english voice acting is good and solid, but the german voice acting is absolutely brilliant! I look forward to playing the game twice to hear both versions. :-)

There are a couple of minor annoyances in the usability, when you are used to other RTS games. But I alltogether thoroughly enjoyed the fresh take on the genre they managed.

The ability to play the campaigns as co-op is a great option too. It will depend on how well you can divide tasks / coordinate with your other player, as you both are playing the same units, but that can definately be part of the fun figuring out what works for you

this game is super simple but super fun. you build a dungeon, you protect it, and you slowly wittle away the enemies forces while beefing your own until your ready for the final push. the narration is dorky and cheesy and hilarious and does not take itself seriously. definly need more games like this.

Superior to Dungeons 4 in every way
Not sure what happened with 4 but 3 is so much better of a game, better designed, the writing is better, art direction is better ... not sure what happened with the dev but 4 is Wish brand version of 3 ... this is the one you want to buy if you only get 1

Get both if can 4 is not horrible its just a notable downgrade from 3
3 is a funny, well-built game with a lot of content to play

Masterpiece of Storywriting and Jokes.
perfect entertainment, Co-op mode is great for playing with others, especially if they are not as good in these kinds of games
which there were more combat control options though.
like attack move / hold position/ and better hotkey visibility for such things. (I am used to starcraft)

This base-building real-time strategy game offers an accessible learning curve and engaging gameplay mechanics. While the core experience is entertaining, the mission structure presents a notable limitation - individual scenarios typically conclude within an hour, which can interrupt the flow of extended gaming sessions. Despite the time passing quickly during gameplay, the repetitive nature of mission starts may impact long-term engagement.Having completed the base game after approximately 12 hours of gameplay, I found sufficient value to warrant a temporary pause before potentially returning to pursue remaining achievements and downloadable content. For prospective players, I recommend purchasing this title during a sale period. The combination of intuitive mechanics, reasonable learning curve, and enjoyable gameplay elements delivers a satisfying experience that justifies the discounted investment. The game successfully balances accessibility with strategic depth, making it suitable for both newcomers to the genre and experienced RTS enthusiasts.

I'm gamedev myself and that's what I think

Uniqueness 8/10

* Your gameplay is split onto 2 sections: Managing dungeon, conquering overworld. It's overall a great idea, especially for coop
* Needs of units increase as you level them up. Each unit requires gold payment from time to time, as well as some need to eat, place to sleep and with high enough level orcs need beer, demons mana bath and so on. Adds depth to managing, without adding mechanic complexity
* Multiple ways of increasing army strength. You can hire more units, research upgrades (both fraction and unit specific) which is not new to the strategy genre however in addition when units level up they become stronger as well as you can find books that grant different traits to a single unit of your choice

Gameplay 7/10

Firstly, dungeon. Here you can gather gold, build traps for heroes that are dare enough to raid your base and most importantly, build rooms. Rooms can be any size, any shape, inside each room you can place room specific building, or they would be placed automatically. Rooms are needed to satisfy creatures needs, store gold, produce resources (such as mana for casting spells and resurrecting demons, toolboxes for some buildings) and so on. Some more words about traps. They add some tower defense aspect, you must plan your dungeon well to get most out of them, as well as great economy to build enough. Honestly, traps are pretty useless in the game because they're quite expensive, and you can always bring your army back and forth using portal spell, heroes raids can bring some troubles in some cases, but mostly defending is inc readably easy.
Secondly, conquering overworld. There are different types of buildings: camps that produce packs of heroes to raid you from time to time, static defense such as cannon towers and sources of evilness. When captured, sources of evilness produce a unique resource that is needed for researches, so it's very important. Heroes can capture sources of evilness back, but it happens very rarely and has almost no impact on gameplay. Some missions have unique buildings both in overworld and in dungeon
Overall, gameplay is very chill. I would like to see bigger variety in overworld building, for example, they may have whole towns and infrastructure, such as resource gathering, units production. This way, conquering overworld would require logic and planning, not just stomping everybody with a big enough army. Secondly, would be great to have more intense raids, to at least make more use out of traps.
Thirdly, heroes cannot rebuild their base, so it's almost impossible to lose, you're slowly accumulating power with researches, base expending, so there is no real confrontation between you and heroes side, you destroy them bit by bit, so winning is simply matter of time (I never lost, never was even close to losing. Chaos difficulty makes the game harder, but not much. It can make the mission longer, however). Because you're almost guaranteed to win, each game was about planning how to win faster, not how to win in general. Lack of competition causes game to be a bit repetitive

Progression 5/10

As you complete the campaign, you receive new building, new troops, so there are new things you can try out as you progress. With some missions adding a unique twist, gameplay becomes less repetitive, but overall missions feel pretty same.

Replayability 5/10

There are 2 game modes basically: campaign and skirmish. In my opinion, skirmish isn't challenging,
nor interesting. Each campaign mission has 3 additional objectives/achievements, which you can do, prolonging overall gameplay. I finished the game with all missions and achievements in 25 hours, basically you would have around 20–40 hours of gameplay, depending on your pace and would you go for all achievements or not. So it's average for a strategy

Controls/UI/bugs 3/10

Huge minus to controls. There are numerous problems, I would list some:
* You cannot add units in groups while in overworld. For example, I have 3 units bound to `1`, if I select another couple units and press `shift+1` in dungeon, this would add them to the first group, however, in overworld such combination acts as `ctrl+1` and instead of adding to the existing group, overrides it. This is especially annoying when you receive bonus units in the overworld in some missions, because such flaw forces you to send new units to the base, add them from the base and afterward bring back
* Units behavior in dungeon is terrible. The most vivid example, is when you have a task for unit, and it's simply roaming around doing absolutely nothing, completely ignoring the task, even if it decides to finally start working, after doing a single task, it would return to normal afk
* Units in overworld automatically consume food, money. These resources are literally teleported to them, however in dungeon they're not, thus forcing units to roam around, firstly go to food room, then to gold and it takes forever. I don't understand why making such different behavior in a first place
And many more not so major problems
UI is okayish and not so many bugs as well, thus it's not worth making detailed description about them

Other data

✅ I finished the game
✅ I made all the achievements
❌ Challenging
✅ I played in multiplayer (with friends)
✅ Simple (minimalistic)
❌ High entry threshold

Overall rating 28/60 (5/10)

Pretty average strategy game and I don't recommend playing it solo, however if you have a friend, and you wouldn't get annoyed by stupidity of AI, then it's a distant choice as a coop game. It's fun, chill, unique enough and would take you couple dozens hours to complete

Terrible game.

Pros:
???

Cons:
Nearly everything is useless and completely unintuitive.
Traps take forever to build, have a high cost, have a long supply chain, and NEED COMBAT UNITS TO BUILD! Combat units that will constantly stop manufacturing the traps. It takes over 10 minutes to get a single trap installed. They may as well not even be in the game.
Mana can't be replenished, once it's gone, it's gone. It's also needed for too many things. Building magical traps, which I never actually get around to because they also have a long, yet separate, supply chain. Demon units will drain a TON of mana just by existing, and then they need it to revive as well. Spells of course need it as well, but I've never cast any because by the time you unlock them, you're out of mana. May as well not even be in the game.

Constant hero attacks on your dungeon. This isn't a "oh wow the pressure is on, I need to refine my dungeon" kind of fun. This is a "as soon as your army is on the surface map and too far away to defend your dungeon, heroes immediately teleport into your dungeon, destroy your dungeon heart, and you lose the game for attempting to complete the mission" kind of attacks. As soon as I defend against one wave of heroes, I send an army out. By the time they reach their destination, my dungeon heart is under attack and I've lost the mission. It's seems you are forced into making one raid the moment you start the game to get "Evil" trickling in, then turtle up and defend for literal hours until you've unlocked enough upgrades to wipe out the surface map in one go. There's no in between. There's no balance of "oh good, now I can attack and defend" like you should be able to do. Nope, sit down, turtle, wait a few hours, destroy everything at once.

Minions- you have Little Snots that do all of your work in the dungeon (other than manufacture traps for some reason). You get to spend the first 10-15 minutes of every game having them dig for gold so you can buy more Little Snots. Super fun. super, super fun. If that weren't bad enough, you only get a max of 15, so you are always, always waiting on them to build or dig. They also have so many tasks in the late game that they can't mine enough gold to pay for all of your late game troops, so all of your troops will go on strike and refuse to fight, which is part of why you have to spend hours waiting for enough Evil to trickle in, so you can unlock upgrades then send your entire army out before they go on strike. Suuuuuper fun.

Terrible controls. While in your dungeon, you have LESS control over your units than you do on the surface. You can pick them up, and you can drop them. That's it. You can't order them to attack an enemy. You can't put them on patrol. You can't order them to stay in the workshop building traps. You can't do anything useful with them, other than drop them on an enemy, which STUNS your units! The enemy heroes get a few free attacks in while your troops are stunned. Suuuuuuper fun.

No Patrol, Guard, Attack Move, or even No Attack Move options for your units, above ground or in your dungeon. You can at least select a group of units and tell them where to go and who to attack while on the surface. Strangely, you can't deselect units or select no units at all to avoid misclicks.

Boring game, I have no idea how they sold enough of the previous games to get to this third game in the series. Do not waste your time.

Most of the objectives in the game are done above ground but you have to spend time in your dungeon to be able to gather more henchmen to help you achieve the objectives. I tend to forget about the objectives and just focus on building out the dungeon. I can sit and play for hours.

Great game overall. I really enjoyed the comedic value that is throughout the campaign. It also has some pretty and easy controls to get the hang of. While it isn't the most engagingly difficult (if played on normal) I actually enjoyed that because I relaxed and laughed while playing instead of actively try-harding.

Enjoyable, easy to learn, funny, base-building RTS game. I think my main issue with games like this are that the missions are fairly short and only take about an hour so it's quite start/stop doing a longer gaming session. The time does go quickly when you get stuck into it tho, but it's quite repetitive to keep doing the same start over and over again. I've finished the base game, and will probably go play a different game for a while, perhaps I'll come back later to get the remaining achievements and do the DLC.

If the base game is on sale like I bought it, I recommend you buy it as I've had lots of fun for 20ish hours and it's got a fairly gentle learning curve so it's easy enough to pick up and play.

Funny little game, deeeefinitely one of the "Don't think about it too hard" styles of play. Can't count how many missions I defeated the good guys above and built up my armies to have an epic showdown at the end and...... finished the mission by clicking the button... >.<

Real quick - I didn't play Dungeons I and II, but I did play and beat Dungeon Keeper I and II many years ago.
In this game you are the Absolutely-Final-Boss-Of-All-Bosses managing a dungeon to rid the world of do gooders. You slap around the little snots to eh...inspire them to work harder as they fulfill your devious plans. Drawing clear inspiration from Dungeon Keeper (1997), it's sequel, and of course Dungeons II - while adding some extra touches on top.

As you work through the campaign (or skirmish mode) you'll slip into a mode that just comes natural to you and your playstyle. Want a dungeon full of traps to take care of invaders without lifting a finger? Go for it. An army of orcs and goblins? Sure. An army of demons more your thing? They're happy to oblige. Or maybe you prefer the company corpses, the undead will groan with compliance. Or a healthy mix of all of them since it really is entirely up to you and you're not forced to choose or exclude. But managing a dungeon isn't enough for evil. Good must be conquered! With Dungeons III you will have to send forth your armies to the world above and force all living things to live in shadow and flame. Burn the thatched roof cottages!

And that's a colorful way to describe the gameplay loop. The game is full of humor and charm. While the story is nothing deep, original or profound, it doesn't aim to be. I found myself rolling my eyes at some jokes while getting a good laugh at others. I enjoyed that the voice actors hammed it up plenty and likely had a lot of fun.

At the beginning of every level you start in your dungeon. The game gives you a grace period of time to start out before it starts sending small waves of heroes to destroy the dungeon heart. If the dungeon heart falls, game over, mission failed. Try again. Each level the underground space you have to dig out will be different and sometimes you'll dig out a surprise which could be treasure or enemies. Difficulty varies from mission to mission but ultimately it just comes down to the individual and skill. The quicker you can setup, the easier a mission will be no matter what. There are some missions that require speed. There are achievements that will take real effort. Meaning you have to go out of your way to accomplish a challenge. Most of the more difficult ones will be time based if you're an achievement hunter. These are just for fun and to challenge yourself, always remember these are not required and to prioritize what is fun FOR YOU.

Breaking the gameplay down further you're introduced bit by bit more options for your dungeon as you progress through the campaign. And there are a lot of options (dungeon rooms, creatures, research, etc) so this trickle of information I found to be just right as I progressed. In Dungeons III you are more of an influence than having direct control while in the dungeon. You make the plans and those plans will be prioritized but your creatures will go about their business on their own. Fulfilling their needs (sleep, hunger, relaxation) or working. Above ground, the game switches and becomes a real time strategy-lite game where you have complete control over your army. Oh yeah, you also have a variety of spells at your fingertips to further influence the world.

There are ways to strengthen your army and the traps in your dungeon. Some work stations need a specific unit to operate which at first might seem like you're being spread too thin but it all serves the loop to buildup your forces to eventually overtake your adversaries. There are a few missions that are time sensitive but the majority of them you are free to play at your leisure. Unless you're going for achievements, the campaign is not too difficult and quite accessible. I'd certainly recommend it to any fan of the management genre of games, especially if you played Dungeon Keeper back in the day. Given how often Dungeons III goes on sale with all the DLC, absolutely worth the money. Once I complete all the DLC for this game, I will be playing Dungeons I and II.

Its ok, very light hearted version of dungeon keeper, while its balanced for the amount of creaturs it gives you, I would have liked to see something a little more larger scale
Thats whatver though. Opinion...
Kinda sucks they developer has a sexual obsession with thalya, why is my evil "right hand man" cute? its weird.
Anyway good game.

I originally intended to post a large review, but the truth is, is that there's so much wrong with both this game and Dungeons 4 that I could write an essay on it! Don't get me wrong, there's some good innovations in this 'Dungeon Keeper' style game, but there's a lot of bad in the gameplay itself. Dungeons 4 is overall better than this one, so if you've played that I wouldn't bother with this one.

I usually don't post negative reviews unless a game really annoys me or is unfair, but the level Two Sides of the Med on Hellish difficulty has clearly not been tested. (I suspect the same with Dungeons 4 levels on hard mode, which are so brutal you need to use an exploit with the slime ball trap to push the invading heroes back.). Unfortunately on this game there is no such exploit. It seems to me that the heroes invade your dungeon depending on how many creatures you have, although I could be wrong. The issue is, is that on this particular map there are an unusually large amount of hero bases. This combined with the fact that you need lots of creatures to both defend the dungeon and attack on the overworld means that you get raped!

Just buy it. All the fun of dungeon keeper with a nice interface and funny dialogue. A friend and I have played the whole campaign on coop seamlessly.

Very much in the spirit on Dungeon Keeper, but with more over the top humour. The voice acting / narrating is especially fun. Do NOT expect a very serious game.

Compared to 2nd this game is just horrible only good thing about it is
1: now you build rooms for your unit like dungeon keeper
2: now you build Turkey Farms like dungeon keeper
3: now you play with all race at the same time
4: now the campaign is CO-OP

for the things i dont know
1: you now have a Hero
2: the narrator is as funny is always

now for the bad
1.0: less units than the first one 38 VS 17
1.1: D2 had 13 units per factions vs 17 however you used all of them compared to D3 where i feel i only use 1 of the factions of units since i need to choose what upgrades i go for so i can have as litte as 5 units (Demon) per playthrough
1.2: you cant upgrade your units anymore
2: no upgrades in the rooms anymore instead you have it in a window
2.1: less upgrades no unit specific upgrades as the old one had now its +% per click for the faction you took
3: the Narrator does not get angry on you anymore for being slow or going the wrong way i found that hilarious in the last one :p
