very disappointing, I badly wanted to attack music with swords
found a song
tryd it! not so great, so I..
mapped a custom.
saved it.(somewhere)
go back
click use custom song.
browse more files but ninja beat not here.
back to custom
time spent checking drive for game install its like the 5th drive iam bored shitless of navigating files in VR, I navigate to the last library and load the song and its custom track.
The game and its position of each note is perfect, if your limbs are floating spaghetti like extremities that serpentine as if Medusa on bad hair day. Also felt like my centre line and the required games centre where at loggerheads. like its "body and mind where north and south"
Great idea but ill wait til its finished. may try again though ...??
Experienced on the Oculus Rift with Touch Controllers
I love music rhythm games in VR. Soundboxing, Air Tone, Audio Shield, Music Box (free!), Beats Fever, Holodance, I like them all, and I probably missed a few and I didn't even count Rockband VR or the drumming VR games. Beat Ninja could be up there with the best of them. However, it has some serious issues that make it just recommendable for VR music rhythm fans like me.
The core gameplay is awesome and different from all the other music rhythm games. I'm surprised nobody has stolen this formula and improved it. I would buy that game in a second. When this game works, it is a lot of fun and quite the workout. However, it doesn't always work, at least it doesn't work consistently enough. You have to overlook various issues to enjoy this game.
Even on medium difficulty playing a local song from my PC that isn't really all that fast (Lightning Crashes by Live), it seemed that the notes were going by really fast, almost as fast as I could swing at times. And that's when the problems start. You do have to align your sword correctly to get a swing to register. But it seems that sometimes they just don't register. When it's slow it's never a problem. But when one note is right next to another one, it seems it's very inconsistent in registering.
Another big issue is YouTube integration. It doesn't work at all. It says error downloading after you pick the song and then nothing works. You have to quit the game and restart even to select your own songs locally.
I think that medium difficulty needs to be reworked with faster songs to go easier on the person. I'm not even sure how anybody could get hard difficulty. I coud barely finish 2 songs on medium difficulty before starting to break down in sweat and my arms feeling tired.
Rate 6/10. Buy on sale. I had fun, but I also had a lot of frustration. I hope the dev polishes the game because it's a blast to play when it is working as intended.
I like this game, but its one of those where I wish Steam had a "Maybe" vote instead of just Yes or No.
Pros
Fun mix of Audioshield and ZenBlade/Fruit Ninja style gameplay.
An interesting mechanic with the Tower Defense playing in the background, tied to how well you are doing slashing beats.
Automatically generated beatmap doesn't feel too off in the songs I've tried so far. Having custom beatmaps is a plus.
Many of the swords work different. Rapier can't slash beats, only 'stab', for example.
Cons
UI needs some work, especially during a game (accidently hitting reset can happen if you are getting a bit crazy with your sword slashes)
It's hard to pay attention to the castle/minion bars in any song that isn't somewhat slow, especially on Medium/Hard
Beats are a bit large, can't see past them to prepare for subsequent beats.
Sword slash detection can feel off, the 'cutting edge' isn't very generous (like in say, Fruit NInja)
Middle Ground
The Tower Defense thing is a nice, unique touch, but it isn't very flashy or obvious. Some improvements to it could make it stand out.
Succesfully cutting a beat doesn't make a sound, though that may or may not interfere with the song (option?)
Final Verdict (as of 7/13/16 version)
It's fun and interesting. I like it a lot, but I cannot suggest it at this price point. It needs some work in the UI and control department, but they aren't extremely bad, just 'passable'.
It gets a Yes from me though, as the Pros outweigh the Cons.
Very cool game. i love how they allow you use your own music. That's just sick. Simple but alot of fun and very cool. Brillant concept. would be nice if the sword slashes had sound effects but hey you can't have everything right. What an amazing game. so much fun
Poor hit detection
Low qualiy UI
Out of place tower defense mechanics
Clunky Sword models
Swords disappear and stop detecting hits when somewhat close to you
This is very unfinished and not worth $20
