Brilliantly simple fun. Especially recommended for challenging friends and having a laugh.
It's not too bad, But I got a refund, The motion you need to make is not at all like you would shoot a real basketball. The basketball is perched at the end of the Vive wand when it makes more sense for it to be where your hand actually is in the virtual space.
So to me, who plays a lot of rec bball it just feels wildly off in the actual shot mechanics.
As for the backboard, that reacts nicely and allows bank shots at the same angle as real life. The hoop however acts like some sort of crazy pinball bumper, making anything other than a perfect swish bounce 10 feet away.
The main reason i got the refund is that I'm worried it would wreck my IRL shooting mechanics, where I am about a 65-70% free throw shooter.
If you are looking at it as goofy fun it's not too bad.
While simple, Hoops VR is extremely fun. You have four different modes to choose from (Easy, Hard, Trash, and Paper Airplanes) and it's a blast to play. All you have to do is make the basket or whatever you choose and see how high of a score you can get. But, with friendly competition, you and your buds can make a heck of a time out of this.
9/10 Great party game and time burner.
First off, I purchased this for the main purpose of hopefully having a nice basketball shooting game to play myslef and demo to friends. Now while playing I did enjoy the basketball games, the EASY MODE being great for the person who is not someone who would consider themselves a basketball player or someone with not to much skill at shooting hoops (that being me), and the HARD MODE is a substancially more difficult run as the hoops are smaller and requires your shots to me more accurate. After the basketball modes you have a mode which you throw various items of trash into trash bins, which is an ok game, more of a novelty to me as I dont really love it and some items prove to be vary difficult to get into the bin ( dam Tire Iron is like impossible to get in), But now the Paper airplane mode is a hidden gem for me, at first it was just a little bonus for me, but the more I played it, the more I loved it. The paper airplanes have a way better feel to throwing them because typically youd throw them with one hand and the feeling is great, and the rush when you go on fire and start sending them through the hoops quicker and quicker is amazing. The paper airplanes mode easily became one of my favorite arcade style games on VR and the grind to climb the global leaderboards makes it even better (at the time of this review [Jan 12, 2018] I am currently placed 8th on the global leaderboards for Paper Airplanes).
The only things i would love to see changed would be an addition to end game sooner than having to wait the whole minute and a half (would make it a lot easier for people going for really high scores to save time when the start a run off poorly), and maybe a slight tone down on the fire on the paper airplanes and the basketballs.
Possible additions (for the Dev):
- A longer time game instead of 1 min 30 sec
- A Sudden Death game (one missed shot and game over)
- An intergrated way to quit the game without having to use Steam VR to go home. (possible basketball hoop behind you that you can throw the ball in to quit)
- And finally maybe some FREE customization of the colors of the basketballs and paper airplanes.
Overall, easily one of my favorite games of VR that is less than $10.00. Would highly recommend this game to any VR owners.
9.5/10
*Game played on HTC Vive
Hoops VR is a casual fun basketball themed game. One of my favourite basketball themed games available in Virtual Reality so far. The design is nice, I particularly like the fire animation that occurs when you get a hot streak by shooting several hoops in a row, and I like the basketball court themed sound effects. There a three different modes to the game, shooting regular basketballs or shooting garbage into hoops, or alternatively shooting paper airplanes into rings. Although casual, there is a competitive aspect to this game with local and global leader-boards to compete on, which is always fun, and there is also a timer which adds a bit of a challenge to each mode. I’ve found that it is difficult to find a game that accurately re-creates basketball in Virtual Reality due to the way we have to hold the controls, but this is one of the most enjoyable basketball games that I have found so far, and uses the controls to the best of their ability at this stage in VR development.

This is a great little game useful for showing off the headset. The airplane mode is also cool.
One of the recent updates broke my game. The first couple times I played, it worked great. Fun and difficult, but enjoyable. Now, the ball doesn't stay connected to my "hand" as I attempt to throw it. The ball sticks where it is spawned. It can still be thrown, but doesn't follow your hand, so it's super frustrating to get it to go where you want. This is literally unplayable right now (no sarcasm intended). Please fix this for Vive users.
It is a simple fun game, with lots of replay value. It appeals to the wii players... the physics of the ball is good and you get the feelling that you are actually shooting hoops.
This game is outstanding -- I cannot stop playing. The game is simple but the environment is classic arcade and the physics are on point. I'd love a few more game types (maybe realtime versus multiplayer or a "longshot" challenge/waves where the hoops get progressively further away, etc.), but I'd pay 5 times the price at the moment. I'll be playing this for years.
This is a fun arcade-style game with global scoreboards that motivate me to keep coming back. The graphics are good, the environment provides a real sensation of presence (the platform you shoot from is something your brain will instinctively want to avoid the edge of), and the trajectories of the balls/objects feel appropriate for the input (more so than most other games where you throw stuff).
The only thing I'd like that the game is lessened by the lack of is the ability to re-orient the playspace. Currently, it forces you to play in a specific direction, which for me means risking banging my controller on furniture as I have a small space. In spite of this, I've thus far done pretty well on the leaderboards, so if you're in a similar situation it's a disadvantage that won't hamper you too much.
It's okay. There isn't much too it. Like people have said, the feeling is different since you dont have any weight to the basketballs. Also, it's more of a mini game. There isn't much to do as it gets repeatative. I whish there were maps, or actually at a basketball court. But it's fun, or at least a little fun with friends.
For what it is worth, this game is a nice distraction in VR.
What it does well:
- Has local Leaderboards, Friend Leaderboards, and Global Leaderboards (so that any guest can get their initials in the game and compete with you arcade style)
- Very simple gameplay, with 4 modes: Easy, Hard, Paper Airplanes through hoops, and garbage in garbage cans
- Achievements are fair but hard. Very doable in a few hours, although the Hard Achievement will take a lot of practice
- Addictive Repeative Gameplay loop
- Great graphics for what it is
- +2 points for going on fire!
What it does poorly:
- Ball physics are not like a real ball (you can't really put backspin on the ball)
- The weight of the balls feel off at first... but you get used to it. The weight makes it hard to put a high arc on the ball. If you have ever played the Wii Sports basketball game, I am not sure waht they did differently, but that mode felt more right than this as far as feeling like you shooting basketballs with a sense of real motion. If you can get past the "realism" factor though, and learn the physics of the game... it's still fun
[*] Hard modes are mostly easier if you play underhand than overhand because of the limits of VR
Overall, this was a great addition to my VR library, and I go back to it often enough to try and beat achievements and/or beat my own highscores. When people try VR, this is a great one to break out if they like sports and/or if they like trying to beat scores. For wahtever reason, everyone really likes the garbage can mode the most.
As a sidenote to other developers of VR, local leaderboards are a must.
Firstly, this does not feel like shooting hoops does in real life - without the weight of a basketball or the use of two hands to grip one ball it feels and behaves completely different, and it's physics feel very different to a basketball. One of the first things I noticed was that the hoops were all quite low (many of them even spawn below you), but this is really necessary due to the way physics behave without the weight of a basketball or proper throwing technique.
Having said that, it's still a lot of fun, and I don't regret buying this for a second. If you want to throw balls into hoops, or garbage into bins, or paper planes into hoops I'd recommend it - it's fairly well polished and makes for a good distraction for a while.
Disclaimer: I suck at basketball in real life and probably don't know what I'm talking about here.
Picked this up for $4, definitely worth the cheap price if you like those arcade basketball games. Trying to get a higher score on Hard definitely is a challenge.
Very interesting game, but personally I just can't get used to basketball without the weight of the ball.
Beyond that, 4 game modes, easy, hard (smaller nets), trash (random shaped trash into trash cans) and planes (paper airplanes through hoops). After 3 baskets in a row, objects become flaming, which is kind of neat but ultimately just distracting.
In paper airplane, aiming it is very annoying because they are so large it takes up half the field of view.
All modes are timed, which I dislike as well, would be nice to just free play to practice the mechanics, but ultimately nothing really making me want to go back.
A lot better than expected. While the control is not perfect, it's more than enough to make me feel immersed. Good in-door workout too!
Edit1: you can clearly see how much my colleagues love this game...
Edit2: the game has been broken for me since the december update. Whenever I spawn a ball, it sticks to the spawn location instead of following the hand, and it breaks all interactions. May or may not have something to do with Revive/oculus. In its current state (and the apparent unresponsiveness of the developers), I cannot recommend anyone to risk their money on this game.
Coming from a guy that really like Wii sports, I love this game. This is a great standing only game that is quite a addicting. It's a simple game, so there is not yet a lot of content (yet?), but that's ok. I would gladly buy this game again if i had to. This is definitely a game I'll use when I demo the vive for someone.
Really fun and addicting. Just picked it up and started playing, next thing I knew I've been going at it for over an hour and I'm dripping in sweat lol.
Pros:
-Addicting
-Simple yet kept my interest for an hour straight (didn't even move past easy yet)
-Scoreboard is nice (Reason why I didn't go past easy yet is because I wanted the high score first!)
-Controls are very simple
-Small, almost meaningless feature...but I really like how you can dribble the ball and try for bounce shots or just volleyball spike it for fun!
Cons:
-Lack of music. Sure I can play my own music, but a nice tune in the background would be nice! I think I could get even more into it if there was.
-I dislike how a hoop can come up right in front of another and block your shot. It almost punishes you for scoring too quickly
-The fire from the ball can block your vision a bit. Would be nice to see it tuned down a bit (Though I love how the ball lights on fire. Reminds me of NBA Street lol)
That's really all the cons I got. Fun game, worth the $9-10. Simple yet addicting and fun!
Only basketball game available. It is well done and plenty of room for additions. I hope you have high ceilings.
Would like to see an accurate display of the collision instead of vive controllers to make it easier to do tricks outside of the normal gameplay. Not sure if this is just some effect of VR or a game problem but the balls feel "heavier" than they should to me. I feel like I'm putting in a lot more effort than I would IRL.
In Garbage mode, all the food based assets seems to LOD out and vanish about 3 feet from the camera but they still count if the invisible fruit makes it in. Not sure if this is some sort of blind shot feature to prevent correction or a bug.
This game reminds me of those token-sucking arcade basketball machines. I can see VR games like this inevitably replacing those machines.
Like's:
- The game modes are fairly fun. All easy to pick up and start playing.
- Physics are very well done. Things like velocity, arc, and release all translate really well.
- Love the little "enter initials" game. Nice touch!
- You actually get a pretty decent workout!
- This game is everything Wii Sports wished it could be.
- I have a new go-to for demoing the Vive.
Dislike's:
- No music
- Needs more difficulties
- "Garbage" mode is a bit glitchy. Items disappear mid-throw.
- When the ball is on fire, it's a bit distracting and screws up your aim.
- I wish the controller models were hand models instead.
Here's some of my gameplay!
