Hope Lake is a captivating hidden object game that offers a gripping and dark story line. This is further enhanced by the numerous cut scenes which helps provide more intrigue into the story.
My Grandmother use to play these type of games a lot, so I tend to have a soft spot for hidden object games and to be honest, this one would have stood out to her.
Unlike many hidden object games that rely heavily and solely on finding hidden items as the core mechanic, Hope Lake blends it with a variety of puzzles, requiring you to gather items and objects throughout the game to unlock the puzzles and solve challenges to progress. The game's suspenseful narrative, centered around the mysterious disappearance of multiple female students, keeps you engaged, wanting more and eager to uncover the mystery.
The only drawback was the mislabelling of items, which I am assuming was due to poor translation. This did make finding certain items challenging in a few stages.
Overall, I loved this game and would highly recommend it to those who want a hidden object game but do not like the repetitive nature they can provide. This game has such a wide variety of different puzzles and objectives which keeps you constantly engaged and wanting more.
This game is a short and simple experience that can be completed in about three hours. The story is engaging, but much of my playtime involved being AFK. It’s a cheap game, so don’t expect anything too elaborate, but it’s enjoyable overall. It’s a great option for casual play during your free time, making it perfect for when you want something light and easy to dive into.
what can i say....the puzzles were lackluster. theres a lot of going back and forth, its frustrating. theres alot of eye spy. i mean it wasnt a bad game. it was unique. get it on sale. yeah im at a loss trying to write a review on this game.
There is an translation error in the fountain HOG with the word "trumpet" given to a pipe. Other than that I enjoy the game a lot.
I'm conflicted. I had a fun time with this game but there are some things that ruin the experience.
The biggest thing is the looped music. There is something like a minute of music which is looped through the whole game.
The gameplay is pretty basic. It's not too hard but some puzzles can be annoying. I've also seen that at one specific point in the game there is no indicator on the map which made me going through every screen to find the next thing to do.
And the story... The story can be told in 2 phrases. It's straight forward, without any twists. It's not deep in any kind. The ending is short and left me thinking "that's it?". It's like at some point the team forgot about conclusion. Just bang, the end.
I had hopes for this game. In my opinion if you want to spend some mindless time for few hours, give it a try. If you're looking for a good hidden object game with medium or better story then stay away from "Hope Lake". It left me without hope and to be honest without nothing.
Hope lake is hidden object, point and click puzzle mystery game published by RunServer. Don't buy this if you want to save some money, same company published Sacred Almanac Traces of Greed for example which was way better. Go buy that, if you want to try this publishers games.
Plot summary - You get called by local police to investigate missing person case, when you hear there has been several girls who has gone missing, all being students of the Hope Lake boarding school. You fuel your car and arrive to the abandoned boarding school and you unveil the story of a teacher who accidentally drowned. You soon meet with a strange person with a long cape and a hoodie covering their head, who seems to be behind all of this. You are set on an adventure where you try to conclude what happened to the girls and stop the mysterious bad guy.
Plot itself wasn't anything extraordinary, it was somewhere around being decent. I had little bit hard times focus on the cut scenes, since the plot didn't really seem to be so interesting. I would still say it was decent for this type of a game.
I sadly can't recommend this game to anyone at this price point. Maybe if it were less than a euro, but not worth 8 euros. Mechanics have several flaws. Like someone said in earlier review what i noticed first was that you can't alt + tab to desktop without the game crashing your computer. I couldn't even close the game from task manager and had to restart the whole computer from the power button. I had to jump few times to use the dictionary (I'll explain later) and it just crashed on me. I would have wanted to play the game in a window mode, since the scene hopping animations made my head hurt, but it wasn't possible since the game crashed if you tried to put the full screen mode off. Also there was only two (2) difficulty levels to choose from, easy and harder. Which is not ideal in my opinion, but better than nothing. No extra chapters or extra content, no soundtracks to listen or artwork displays in main menu.
There is decent amount of HO scenes and puzzles, but if i remember correctly all of them get repeated at least few times. Which isn't good thing in my opinion. It's fine if you play the same HO scene twice sometimes, but all of them? No thank you. Several had some really niche not commonly used words. Since as a person who speaks English better than average non native speaker and has good understanding of the language i did not know what for example pince-nez was or sextant, i had to hop on to a dictionary to see what i was even trying to find. I don't deduct points because of that though since it's completely problem in my end and me not knowing.
Some HO scenes had wrong names for the items though or at least less commonly used names what comes to the items. For example clearly a remote control was called control panel, wrench was multiple times just a key and bucket that looked like it was made of a wood and could be paired with a mop was called basket. Mechanics in the HOs were little bit off too, you had to click really well of the object to get it and it didn't always take it even if i clearly hit it. Wasn't enough if you clicked two pixels off. Graphics of the game weren't that optimal for the scenes either, since sometimes the items you were looking for blended in the background and other times they just popped out so obviously like they didn't belong there. Several typos was seen too, like in the dentist room there was sentence that started with "Thathere's", when it clearly should have been just "There's". Several words in HOs missed s in the end, like binoculars was just binocular. These are small mistakes though, but noticeable. Game itself was little bit too straightforward for me and added to the fact that the puzzles were super easy, made the game little bit boring to play personally. I would have said that it's maybe better for a younger audience than me, but since it's mildly horror themed i wouldn't let kids play it.
What comes to the artwork if i don't count the poor graphics in now, it was decent. Not my favorite across the genre, but i didn't completely hate it. Also background music and game sounds were decent i guess, since i barely noticed or made any specific remarks on those. There were little bit of voice acting, it was ok, have seen worse so points given on that.
What positive i can say from this game that while it was easy, i still got like 3 hours play from it. It has 30 steam achievements, which you can't miss if you play the game to the end. So it's a easy complete game, which is clearly a big plus. Just because the last stated fact, i could recommend this game to a people who like to collect complete games to their profile, BUT ONLY if it's on huge sale. I'm talking like -60% or -80% something like that. It comes to a sale sometimes, because it bought it from like summer sale i think.
