Starting the game is a nightmare, several logins required with every start, the gameplay sucks, has nothing to do with C&C "principles". Visuals are way worse than C&C3 (eyes literally hurt from looking at it), I've played it years ago as it came out and somehow it seems even worse now. Setting the game to work with "modern" resolutions is basically impossible, it's more fun to just watch the videos on youtube...
I haven't had any performance issues or bugs, but damn this game is just NOT fun to play.
For some reason they decided to completely change everything that was fun about C+C games.
Unit caps, bizarre missions that are either too short, or too convoluted and difficult, no base building.
I just cannot grasp the mindset behind this.
I bought this game on major discount and I payed too much for the opportunity to confirm the validity of the poor reviews for this game.
What kind of game dev decides that instead of playing into all the things that make a game franchise fun and popular they would rather remove and minimize all of those great qualities to leave buyers with a game no one wanted to play from the start.
Mission design is terrible. Graphics feel worse than C&C3. Unit pathing is worse than Starcraft ONE.
And did you enjoy resource extraction, unit build ups, and base building? Well this game has none of that.
Did you enjoy being able to starve your enemies of resources and steal their buildings? Yeah, cant do that in C&C4.
I've never seen such a huge miss on such a simple assignment. Check out the end story on youtube. Its not that good either.
I played this game when it was first released back in 2010
Steam would only allow me to review it once i installed and try to play the game. I bought the C&C collection as I don't have to use a cd/dvd to play any of the games.
I forgot you had to login twice to play this game. I just remember playing this game for 2 weeks, completing it and never playing it again.
so from C&C 1 to C&C 3 and generals, the games basically got better and the best game I found was the Red Alert series, but this game was so bad there was no C&C 4 Red alert.
so back in 2010 when I had bought this game, I was angry, I had completed this game, never wanted to play the game again and at the time, it was possible to sell games on the 2nd hand market, but this game I was stuck with.
All I remember this game was a completely new concept at the time, it was a shame it was not tested, but it was no longer building a base, but having a mobile control station and having a defence and offence command post and you no longer had to build a base, or gather resources.
so one of the best C&C games was generals and this game basically was the sad death of command and conquer.
If it was a good game, I might have been able to tolerate the digital rights management, but I basically played it for 2 weeks from release.
The only reason I have this game on steam is because it came with the complete C&C collection.
this game in the series is universally hated.
It is a real shame that EA did not go back to the tried and tested C&C, but just stopped the franchise dead.
I can't remember in 2010, if I had to install the physical game from DVD and there was a massive update that was needed to be installed before I even got to play the game and I think I needed to have the disc in my pc drive, log in to the EA account and maybe a further login, well this was at the time of really slow broadband.
The positive I can say about the game is, I managed to complete it and if I played it now, I probably still hate it, but my new pc would be able to run it at full graphics.
I still play Command and Conquer Generals and Red Alert 3, it is just disappointing that the multiplayer has been switched off due to the games age, but I have not played this game after completing it when it was first released.
This is a crime against humanity.
I skipped this game when it released and got it when it's practically free 15 years later.
Turns out I was right 15 years go, I am dumb for trying this atrocity right now.
Don't touch it, it's for your own good. If someone pays you to play this game, ask him to pay for therapy because you'll need it.
Ended up permanently removing this from my library, which I do not do lightly. Nothing much to add that other folks haven't said already.
I am no longer to play this game single player without an EA account.
Was previously able to play single player when I purchased it, but it has been "updated" to block it from functioning. Highly recommended against purchasing games from a company that will make updates that force logins for single player.
This game isn't in itself very bad, but it should have never been marketed as a singleplayer game and given the name of C&C4. It should have been a spinoff like Generals etc.
It's a really interesting attempt at RTS without base-building and with a class-based approach. It's very far from being a great RTS, but there's something fun here. It takes a very rock-paper-scissors approach to the problem and you can have a decent skirmish match in this game.
The game was initially conceived as an esports title called C&C Arena and was built off C&C3, and you can tell. The campaign, the story and the FMVs are disastrously bad. This is weird, because RA3 had great FMVs and a fun story. It seems like there was a fundamental problem with the singleplayer design, probably not enough time was given to the team.
Unfortunately this game ended up killing the franchise. That honor normally would go to Generals 2/C&C2013, but if I'm being honest, the hit this game did to the credibility of EA C&C (until 2020) was absolutely horrible. The team transitioned to doing browser/mobile C&C and Generals 2 was arguably as poorly managed as this game. It's a shame. Anyway, try this game out if you're curious.
Actually, 15 years later, in this draught of new, original, rts games, this one really slaps. I recommend playing it after the plague. Yes, you still need to play the campaign to unlock all the units, but other than that, there's no downside.
EA made ASTONISHING work to make sure you won't enjoy it:
1. You need EA account to play this "game".
2. You need to enter EA account credentials TWICE, EVERY time you launch the game.
3. Changing game screen resolution is a quest!
4. If you alt+tab, say good buy to your game session. You can't restore game window and have to kill the process in Task manager and restart it (Enjoy second point again).
5. On startup, game occasionally goes into alt+tab state by itself (hello fourth point!).
6. In average, after single mission, next mission you will enjoy solid pink textures flooding your screen (issue with loading textures properly). (You must be already a top EA fan if you still wish to continue..)
7. After completing campaign missions you see the panel of obtained EXP, which is... always(?) zero! You know why? Game never tells you. Hint: but be so kind and go play skirmish to get EXP.
So, after playing for ONLY 2 hours I formed a well-based opinion that the ones who praise this game (all 2.5 people) and say the game would be great if it weren't a direct C&C series follower, must be smoking some serious stuff.
Horrendous!
After 15 years of this game being launched and it having the recent source code release (Feb 2025), this game is still a PITA to get running.
It STILL expects you to log into an EA account to play it, multiple times, then tells you that your credentials are invalid! I can't even get to the main menu! Instant uninstall, no game is worth this amount of pointless and arbitrary hoop-jumping.
I hear that it's also only online, not that I'd know!
Until someone mods out the EA Login requirement, which I doubt is possible, avoid this 'game' like the plague!
Crashed 3 times just trying to change the resolution to 1080p and every time the game closes you have to log into an EA account twice
This game just does not want to work.
Campaing is working so far (I played 3 missions) but as soon as I try skirmish battles it always crashes.
Thank you EA for making sure that this game at least runs....
Edit: I managed to run this game properly by tweeking graphic settings and it took quite a while. I had to change resolution many times to fix it but it worked.
Worse graphics than 3 the characters wife is annoying and the gameplay is not as good as the others. Step in the wrong direction IMO. Glad i got this for 4 dollars in a bundle otherwise i would ask for a refund.
super buggy on windows 11. don't even try it. crush most of the time. C&C3 works better
You have to make an EA Account and login to play at all. No offline mode with optional online login.
The 'Skirmish' mode you can't turn off the time limit or adjust things as freely in the options.
They basically turned it into some mishmatch of Mechwarrior Online or CoD but in C&C where you unlock things and have a profile that has performance history.
I don't like it. And i had to go through trouble to play it since it wouldn't run without a specific dot net runtime.
on top of that, asides from my personal opinion of the game itself, this also is another negative for EA, who won't even let me login with my own password to change my email and they want bank info that i dont have to change the old email.. it's trash. straight burning garbage of trash. i hope their company collapses in 2025 so i can dance on the grave of it's failures.
this game, is like Peak EA game breaking.
its not fun, its dull, and plays like a badly designed mobile game.
...and then it crashes.
First need to sign into EA launcher before the game launches, then need to sign into the EA account again when in the game. Game play is not like any other C&C game.
Steam made me aware of games workshop for the C&C titles. However once again made it damn near impossible to make clear for the un-initiated people for a steady understanding. C&C 4 is the only title i never managed to play or complete due to their poor attempt at co-op style play. without an actual Games workshop through steam i guess this title goes back to gathering dust in my library. Another E.A FLOP thx guys
0/10
2004 year game runs better that this piece of shit
It does not work. Period.
Crashes if you try to change graphics away from 800x600 🤮
This is one of the worst games I've ever played. The gameplay is awful, and EA is on some high-test crack if they think I'm going to sign in - TWICE - every time I want to play. Uninstalled.
Played the first C&C in 95 and that got me into gaming.
What a terrible way to end. They could have gone out with a bang, but instead went out with a whimper.

"Surrender the Command and Conquer IP, servants of capitalist swines!

I can't blame the developers or this game for c&c's fate. For what it is this is a decent game ruined by EA's greed and always online bullshit.
i get what they were trying to do but its completely tone def to why we liked command and conquer and the glitchy screen pop ins god its horrible ive adjusted everything i could and i cant fix giant black box's and flickering units.
My friend's dominos delivery arrived and crashed his potato pc. 0/10
You have to log in every time you want to play. also has issues logging in. shame
How do you get everything so wrong?!
Functionally, you have to mess around to get the game to work.
Story wise it is drab and may as well be a radio play for the boring indoor visuals.
Game play wise you can't get to the end of the tech tree just playing the campaign.
Strategy wise - you can just play everything with the same strategy and units and there's never the time to develop a more nuanced build.
Positives:
Doesn't have loot boxes or endless daily quests...
I don't recognized any gameplay from the series. What happened?
It should not be this convoluted just to get past the launcher...
Seriously, do better.
If as a company you are selling a product, even if its an old design, it should be usable as a bare minimum.
Most of what the reviews are saying is true. EA tried to do something different this time and it didn't please everyone. My verdict is that this game is probably more fun for casual gamers and not serious RTS players. The gameplay was definitely watered down from the previous installments. I am a loyal C&C fan, so I wanted to play it to keep up with the overall storyline and check out some of the units.
PROS:
1. I did not think the units were that cartoony. I was impressed to see how they advanced.
A. TITANS are back. Got to love mechs! Everything is bigger and more mechanized than before.
2. Excellent graphics that don't require a super expensive graphics card.
3. Classes can be fun to play and less stressful if you are a casual player. The whole game is very relaxed for a C&C game. I realize this is not the intent of most RTS games. Lol
CONS
1. Acting is awkward and stiff. Eg; Commander's wife.
2. While I like the soundtrack somewhat better than C&C 3's, it will never measure up to Frank Klepacki's backing tracks.
3. Mobile MCV game style is annoying. I miss building bases.
4. Female voice overs are annoying. I think it was clear the devs are trying to boast girl power, which I dislike and am strongly against having this kind of undertone in one of my favorite games.
5. The plot is interesting enough, but not great. It is all about the containment of tiberium on Earth and Nod forces are cooperating with, but also betraying, GDI forces. This is sort of a repeat of some of the last game's storyline. There are no scrin in this game because they had been pushed out and retreated in the last game. Still, it would have been more interesting to see them return. I guess this leaves room for a potential C&C5.
Always online, always glitchy graphics, always crashes.
Braindead gameplay, base building is gone, energy is gone and tiberium is gone. Units are free and there's a unit cap now, it's extremely low, so you're just throwing a handful of units at each other to see who wins.
Units are also separated into 3 classes for some reason, you can only build one subset of all units.
The damage model is confusing, heavy weapons do less damage to light vehicles than light weapons? I don't get it.
The story is so bad it's just taking the piss, just referencing random things and persons from the games without much care about previous lore.
This game likely wouldn’t have received so much hate if the developers hadn’t included the "4" in the title. It should have been treated as a spin-off rather than a direct continuation of the series.
I won’t lie, I actually like the gameplay concept. It’s fun and less stressful, which is about the only thing I genuinely enjoy about this game.
What Doesn’t Work for Me?
1. Cringeworthy Storyline
The storyline is painfully awkward. Was it really necessary to add a romance subplot? Every time I see a cutscene where the commander (player) interacts with his wife, I cringe. The worst moment comes at the end of the NOD campaign when she cries over her hubby's death. It just feels so forced and unnatural.
2. Disappointing Music
The soundtrack is a letdown. The GDI music is passable, but the NOD tracks completely miss the mark. Instead of capturing NOD’s signature dark and intense vibe, it sounds more like tribal chanting from some random village in Kuvukiland.
3. Strange Unit Scaling
The proportions of some units are way off. Certain vehicles are unnecessarily large.. take The Forgotten's "school bus" for example. It’s somehow the same size as a Mammoth Tank, which is just ridiculous.
4. Weak Sound Design
The weapon sounds are underwhelming. Guns, cannons, rockets—none of them have the impact they should. Even the legendary Obelisk of Light no longer gives off that powerful "ZWEEENG" sound. And the rocket visuals? They're so tiny, they look more like fireworks than deadly projectiles.
At the end of the day, I know I’m wasting time reviewing a 15-year-old game that will never get updated. But still, what a missed opportunity.
horrible, hard to get into the game to play, super buggy. Lame game, poor design once playing
umm nope, I wanted to try it out, because its "part of the story" just youtube the cinematics if you're that desperate. The overall idea is interesting, but it is SO BADLY implemented it really isn't worth playing. The first couple of missions might not seem so bad but maybe 4-5 mission in you realise just how terrible the rock-paper-scissors-lizard-spock-ad nauseam the counter unit system (you basically have to memorise what unit counters what).
You basically get in to fights where no one is winning. If that sounds fun to you, be my guest.
"General System Error" when trying to login with my EA account for a single player game.
I know, I know, there are workarounds, but the underlying cause for them to exist is way too bizarre.
I... simply cannot fathom how amateurish can EA be in the way they're dealing with EA account passwords on this game. It's too bad to be true.
Another turd in my library.
NOTE: This is NOT Command & Conquer.
I read a whole mess of the reviews after I purchased this "game" via the "Ultimate Collection."
They're right. They're all right... Well, the negative ones anyway.
Here's how my experience went:
1) Launcher wants you to sign in with your EA account... [Ok, fine.]
2) Error... [Fuck]
3) Error persists seeming at random. [What THE fuck?]
4) Suddenly it's all fine for the game to start up. Nothing changed. [Riiiiiight...]
5) A different login asking for the same information... [Ooookaaay?]
6) Pretty cool looking loading screen... [but why is it all blue?]
7) Start skirmish. [Oh... Oh god no.]
8) Exit and delete.
I absolutely DO NOT recommend purchasing this thing. It's very much bottom of the barrel for EA.
As I said at the top, it is NOT C&C. It's some base-level cash in. I have B-grade mobile games with more RTS soul than this.
To those running EA, I hope L*igi gets out and takes great offence to your actions.
Yeah, no
I really wanted to give this one a go after all these years. My 1st experience was awful playing this since my friend got me a pirated version of this from the local market and it is on 4 discs. Had a lot of "fun" installing it and cracking it all for it to be a C&C without base building, xp grinding and a boring C&C campaign both story and mission structure due to the nature of walking "bases".
The soundtrack is even not that good compared to other C&C games somehow... how did they manage to mess that up?
Clearly this was meant to be a Online Only game for Asian players and it shows. Kind of reminds me of the saddly failed attempt at Company Of Heroes Online which was kind of awesome honestly.
It doesn't work most of the time, even on EA app and when it works it is just not fun. Reminds me of the Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak due to its gameplay style, but worse.
this is not the same team that made good command and conquer games cause this was an utter disgrace to the franchise and definitely needs to be removed from any store. i cant believe i tried to play this crap.
EA why?? you screw up the login? EA today uses the EA app and I don't see why this game should be different and most of the bad reviews are about the login, I did get it to work eventually and if anyone is having the same problem there are guides on steam that can help you get the game to load. Personally I have always been a fan of the CNC series and this is the first time on CNC 4 the game can take some getting used too as it uses an entirely different system set into offence, defence, support and the main command centre is mobile making the whole game more challenging than previous titles, most people seem to dislike this way of playing a CNC game but after playing for awhile it can make for some really interesting game play it just takes some time getting used to. The graphics are much better then previous titles and you get a real sense of elevation and differences in the maps terrain, the units range from small to massive and the names are different from previous titles. The sounds is not bad and i like them as it gives that CNC feel to the game. Overall people don't like the login which is understandable and they find it to challenging were as if you grind you can get through the levels and also they don't like the online service that does not have anyone available however I have found at certain times it is populated. I give the game 8/10 for graphics 8/10 for sounds and 8/10 for game play overall 8/10 as is a good game if you take the time to adjust to the new system but the login should be scrapped.
Login required for singleplayer...
Scummy but ok...
EA has turned off the servers so you get a generic 500 http response to login.
Ah, time to negatively review.
This really was the series killer.
game works in single and co-op if your lucky enough to find some one else online but the pvp aspect dosn't work at
all. What i did to get the game to work is to go into the game files and select on the application run as admin under compatibility mode and the game booted and then i reset my EA password had to enter it 3 times and allow the game to have access to the internet
I think this was my first ever rage-uninstall. Don't purchase this piece of sh!t, don't install it, don't play it. It is LITERALLY impossible to carry on from the 3rd campaign mission (GDI, I don't even care for NOD but I read it's just as much of a piling turd as the other). Whoever came up with the idea of these training/building whatever the f@ck points should be made play this game for eternity.
If you're ever considering paying money for this, simply
DON'T!
Period.
to launch cnc4 in 2025 on win10. servers are closed, but u can play it in single player.
1. go to install folder, click Properties on cnc4.exe, in compability tab check Run as administrator, click apply, ok.
2. create new EA.com account in web browser. password must be exactly 8 symbols, 1 big letter at least and 1 number at least. only letters and numbers.
3. launch the game with cnc4.exe in files folder. when promped by windows to make chages, click yes - allow.
4. type email for ur new ea account and password
5. choose some ingame name that is not already taken, click PLay.
6. when cutscene starts, press Esc to skip it.
7. when u see another login screen, alt +tab to desktop, find Windows Firewall promt for cnc4 and click OK - Allow access to internet.
8. Again enter email and password for ur new ea account.
i saw 7 ppl online in chat. 1 responded. we launched coop campaign mission. nothing else works. no custom skirmish, no coop automatch, no pvp, no coop vs ai. only coop campaign with other players. have not testes single player. maybe can lauch skirmish solo.
the campaign mission crashed the game in middle of mission. will try to lower graphics settings.
This game managed to kill even the messiah.
But I still give it a thumbs up for having nailed something perfectly: the end time atmosphere.
Perhaps not in the way intended. But in a meta sense, that, in a strange twist of abstraction, made it even better. So, yeah. We witnessed a real death here. It's over, folks. It's over.

So, overwhelmingly negative status, huh? You don't see that often. Also, it's a well-known fact that this game is a series killer. That's right. One of the most influential and important series for the RTS genre, the one that shaped and defined it the way we know it today was destroyed by this little fella here. How did that happen? To understand that we should first go for a quick summary.
1992 – Dune II is released. Based on David Lynch's adaptation of Frank Herbert's novel, it introduced series' core gameplay. We were collecting Spice with out harvester vehicles to earn credits and then spending those credits to build ourselves base and an army. 1995 – the first C&C is made. While being spiritual successor of Dune II, the game had much more serious tone, while also including FMV elements. 1996 – Red Alert. Pretty much the same thing with C&C, just with some improvements, naval battles and an important backstory to C&C villain – Kane, who was revealed as evil mastermind behind the humanity's major history events. 1997 – Sole Survivor. Failed attempt for online-only deathmatch experience based on the original C&C game.
1999 – Tiberian Sun. The first game after EA acquisition. Originally planned as much more complicated project, it ended up feeling a bit rushed, but still, in many ways it was a sequel everybody waited for. 2000 – Red Alert 2. Made mostly by new members under EA, it rebooted the RA series. Shared universe was no more. 2002 – Renegade. Failed attempt to make next-gen mixture between RTS and FPS genres. 2003 – Generals. The first game after the series' creators were shut down by EA. Rather weird attempt to reboot series by dropping the old lore and altering core mechanics from Dune II. 2007 – C&C3. A pretty smart U-turn for the series that brought it back to its roots and felt a lot like remake of the 1995 game. 2008 – Red Alert 3. A consoles-oriented game that felt more like Generals 2 and also introduced us to co-op. Thanks to which it felt more like online-oriented spin-off. Yet it was a very good game that lots of people loved. And that was the beginning of the end.
How's the good game is a bad thing you may ask? You see, it made EA believe that quick online sessions is what people wanted. You may expect them to learn from Sole Survivor's failure, but it was an ancient history, while at the moment RA3 was selling really well, so... Yeah. C&C4 was planned as a co-op-oriented project. Which... Isn't a bad thing per se. I mean, RA3 was good, right? Unfortunately, the fact that people swallowed RA3 being more Generals than the original C&C, gave EA another idea. An idea that... *SIGH* But OK, let's finally take a proper look at what we've got. And what we've got is... Anything but C&C.
I know, I know, it comes from a person who keeps saying that Generals was not really C&C, but this here? It took every single C&C element and flushed 'em down the toilet. Resource gathering? Believe it or not, it's no more. Remember the days we were arguing about Generals having resource management similar to WarCraft instead of our usual Dune II thing? Well, resources are no more. No resources – no problem by EA logic. Technically, Tiberium (C&C's counterpart of Spice) is still here, but it's just some crystals you'll be able to pick up now and then to upgrade units. Like I said, resource gathering? Not a thing. And so is a base building. Again, remember that old argument about how in Generals we were able to build anywhere (similar to WarCraft too), while “real” C&C was all about the construction yard and things we were building around it? In this game we can't build at all. Well, technically, there is one building. And the whole game revolves around it.
Everybody who played C&C is familiar with the MCV. So-called mobile construction vehicle was pretty much a portable construction yard. The original idea was to let us choose place for our new base to get the advantage we wanted. Now? Now it's more like our portable all-in-one base. Not only we can move it at any time (StarCraft anyone?), it also acts like all other buildings from previous games. We build units, we purchase updates, we use powers... You've got the idea. Our whole base is just that – one fat MCV. Where do we get money to produce units, you may ask? Well, that's a very good question, because in this game? You don't need money. You're free to build as many units as you want. There's a very strict population limit now, though, much more strict than in those BLIZZARD titles. But that's just a thing. Forget about those big armies. Our goal in this game is, while only having a few units, to figure out perfect combination to outsmart our enemy.
But OK, you may say that simplified take on Company of Heroes, while not being a C&C at all, may still be a good game. True. And that's where our second problem comes in. See, C&C4 is not a well-made product. Not even thought-through. The first thing you'll notice after the initial shock is... how hard this game is. Which... isn't even true. The problem is – single player campaign here is tied to your online profile. Remember the challenges from RA3 expansion? The ones, where you started with close to no technologies (units)? That's the stuff. You start single player campaign with nothing. Yet doing some skirmish grinding first will make it much easier. And a lot of grinding? You guessed it, there are no limits. Grind for the highest commander level (may take quite some time, especially since GDI and Nod are leveled separately) and get big advantage for your single player experience. What. The f*ck? Pretty sure single player experience implies dealing with properly calculated conditions. Here? It's a lot like playing story in some MMO. You stuck? Go grind somewhere else and come back later. Like I said, WTF?
Thankfully, most likely, you won't even get a chance to suffer through all that. Why? *SIGH* Did you play Anthem, guys? C&C4 was exactly that long before it. Starting C&C4 goes like this – launch the game, enter login and password for your EA account, get an error, change password to fit eight symbols (don't ask me why) and voilà! The game works. Is it, though? Right after launch you'll be asked to enter login and password again. Only this time even the short password won't help. Why? Because you need to have EA app running on background. Again, don't ask me why (it doesn't look like the game interacts with it). Even after all that, there's still a chance for a game to tell you to go f*ck yourself. Hello, Anthem. How you doin'?
So here we are. Not only this game dropped everything that we fell in love back in 1992, it also feels rushed (naturally, it's buggy and imbalanced too) and, well, it's half-broken. And it's all pretty sad, you know? The atmosphere here is quite solid. Moreover, the story is quite creative. It has FMV cutscenes, it's told from the first-person perspective and we, the commander, are the main character. The one who plays the most important role. We finally got Kane explained, there is a proper ending for the Tiberium saga... Sure, it's too short (game only has seven missions per faction), but still, with some proper gameplay, it'll be quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, C&C4 is a mixture of the unfortunate coincidences and bad decisions. When you look back, you see that such a mistake was inevitable. But it is EA's fault that shot ended up being deadly. Dixi.
When I started the tutorial missions, I deleted the entire game after just one minute. It's an absolutely terrible game, has nothing to do with C&C, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
A long term fan of the C&C series. I tried to play it and it requires a persistently on internet connection and logging into an EA account but guess what, it does not always work so you may not be able to play it. It is so annoying I gave it up. Avoid. Shame on EA's greed.
