I originally purchased this game before it became free, and while it has its moments, I’d honestly recommend skipping this. That said, I don’t regret buying it, even if it has its flaws.
The Good:
The game begins with an engaging mystery—two worlds and a diverse cast of characters. Some characters stood out well, like Shock, Rooke, and Konrad. The game also structured like a TV series, shifting the narrative from the player to side characters with cliffhangers, giving it a unique feeling.
The Story:
My biggest issue with the story is that it makes you feel more like a background character rather than a protagonist. This wouldn’t necessarily be a problem if the game didn’t also emphasize how important your character is supposed to be. While the other characters get their time to shine, the player often feels like they’re just there to witness how amazing everyone else is. The player character feels bland; the only thing I remember about them is that they admire Klace.
Klace (who looks like, shares the same name and hobby/job—singing/music—as the creator’s fursona) feels like a Mary Sue. He’s adored by everyone, constantly praised, and pivotal to the story’s events—but you never actually interact with him as he is dead! Despite his absence, the plot in the "real world" seems to revolve around him a lot, and this disconnect made every mention of him disengaging.
Another character, Kila, is also worth mentioning. He is meant to be one of your closest companion in the “real world”, but he often comes across as unlikable.
The Ending:
The ending is kinda a letdown. After your character dies, the game provides a brief “PowerPoint presentation” summarizing what happens to the rest of the cast in just a few sentences. Worse, none of the characters seem to care that you died. This ending reinforces the sense that your character was merely an extra in the others’ story.
The character design:
It’s hard to compliment this game in terms of character design. Most characters are other people’s fursonas, with only a few being original creations. That said, the artist did a good job making them visually appealing. Additionally, some characters were paid/Kickstarter backers’ OCs, and this is quite noticeable. Removing them would make no difference to the story.
Other Negatives:
No Skip Function: While this isn’t an issue during your first playthrough, but replaying to explore alternate paths becomes tedious as you’re forced to click through the same dialogues.
Limited Save Options: You can only save at specific points in the story, which is frustrating if you want to take a break or revisit a decision.
Overall:
Major\Minor has its good moments. However, I would not recommend it because its gameplay mechanics and story, with the focus on characters who are unrelatable or overly idealized. I would recommend trying Winds of Change from the same creator if you’re interested in Klace’s work. Alternatively, you might want to wait for the rumored remake of this game, which is said to include voice acting.
Major/Minor is the first game from Klace. I have played this game all the way through three times. It was not quite a pleasant experience.
The pace of Major/Minor is sluggish because of the engine it is built on. It's built in RPG maker and there really isn't a way to autoscroll text. You have to hit a button to advance the text every time you need to, so you can't just leave it on auto and read as it comes up. It's like reading a novel where you have to turn the page for each line. Likewise, there is no way to save/load at will. I tried every key on the keyboard, and the menu didn't come up. These factors combined makes the game feel like an endurance test to get to the next checkpoint where you can save and quit without losing any progress.
As far as the story goes, it's okay. It's a bit confusing at times because there's two worlds that people get transported across by a hyena man, but he also does this to coincide with deaths happening on Earth? And the point of the true ending is to enable inter-planetary travel between Earth and the other planet.
The choices you have to make as the player don't quite do as much as they could have, and you need to make at least 10 correct ones to get the true ending. At that point, why not have it be a linear game?
I will say that aside from the fact that most of the main cast need to learn the concept of how a button-down shirt is supposed to work, the writing is okay. It's not great, but it's not terrible either.
Would I Recommend Major/Minor? No. It's not quite a good experience. I am glad that Klace had learned what worked and didn't work for this game and used that to make the other two games they've released: Winds of Change (tried a different engine, linear narrative with choices) and Komorebi (same engine, but with a bit more polish such as a dedicated set of save/load buttons to allow you stop and pick up at will). There is a remake of this game in development. I hope that the remake takes the shortcomings of this game, and the things later releases had done well into consideration to make an overall better experience.
