This game is far too aimless for it's own good and the most significant story/emotional beat is comprised of one single segment at the very end of the experience. The rest of the 20-30 minutes you spend will be walking around reading like 10 random notes that tell extremely simple and vague stories that are underdeveloped, uninteresting and completely separate from the ending. The game also has this thing about color, but for the life of me I can't discern what sort of meaning or symbolism they were trying to make because the colors seem to just randomly come and go and don't have any real pattern or development over the course of the game. It's also segmented by days, but none of the days build to anything, none of the side stories lead to any interesting revelations, and well... nothing happens. I understand that there was a personal story behind this and the devs wanted to stress the importance of love (which is a nice sentiment) but that doesn't change the fact that this game is as aimless as they come.
The game's atmosphere is by far it's strong suit. I find it chilling and comforting which is a strange but very welcome blend.
The story, especially as it pertains to the side story happening around you, is touching. To spend most of the game in bleakness, with bleakness happening to others around you, makes the final story beat most touching. To be specific, the fact that one man's petty selfishness hurt the potential love story someone was cultivating, while at the end we see what a true love story can feel like is the perfect contrast. Don't just blow through the game as you're quite able to do, do the side things and take your time to get the full contrasting exposure.
It was really cool to see the developer consider colorblindness so much since it was so key to the game, it wasn't hidden away in a menu, it was part of starting the game.
I came across only one bug, but I worked around it in 30 seconds. In addition I got stuck on day 2 because it wasn't clear to me what to do, until I realized I was missing the obvious game developer's hint of pay attention to the only movement on your screen (the birds).

This game is split into two parts: the "actual" game, and then the actual game.
The first part is divided into 6 days. In each day, you do one simple task (take out the garbage, bring in the mail, etc) and then walk down the street and look at a vase for some reason.
Unfortunately, this part is broken. My first time doing day 2, I spent 20 minutes trying to figure out where to put the garbage can before restarting (which starts the game over, as there are no saves). The second time the trigger activated correctly.
Even worse, there doesn't seem to be an actual story. There are a few notes and a journal you can find lying around, but they all seem random and irrelevant.
The game takes 10 minutes to beat. After the credits, the "real" game begins. Here, you can walk around a house and read actual real-life love notes written by the developers.
The ending was cute, and brought a smile and a tear to my face, but unfortunately that's not enough to justify charging $8 for what basically amounts to a blog post. This game would have been much better suited as a webpage or a youtube video than a video game.
I saw this awhile a go on reddit before it was finished and had some good expectation of it but unfourtunatlly they were not met. This is a game you can't rush, you need to take it slow and read everything as I did but I felt that the game was way to short and repetitive. Shame.
I'm confused.
This game feels half-baked, and the keybinds don't work like they're supposed to. The story and gameplay don't make sense. There are people who "get it" - I wish I was one of them.
A very simple and artistically appealing game with a strong purpose. My wife and I played together and found the narrative very sweet and generally appealing. The emotions and ultimate purpose of the game is meant to extend beyond the player's experience, which is very hard to find in video game type media. An atypical game with a message beyond self-amusement and very refreshing.
There are a few bugs and glitches, but Evangeline has a neat mechanic, a great heart, and some hilarious unintentional physics. Also the best 80's house I've ever seen, as well as the best bookshelf. If you like short simple games and sappy love stories, I highly recommend.
VR only review:
I cannot recommend this if you're thinking of getting a story experience for VR. There's several problems with the game. First and foremost, the scales are way off. Everything seems way too big and then you'll move through objects like they are not there. The video stutters along and I experienced frame rate issues. There's a big dot you then need to click on to either read the letters or be able to move on to the next objective. I was confused as to why you had to click on some objects. There isn't much of a reason for VR in this game. VR adds nothing to the experience.
Rating 3/10, not the worst experience, but VR is in beta in this game and it's a terrible, unpleasant beta
I have to say I was disappointed. Bought the game for $7.99 and it was so incredibly slow, even after clearing up space and updating my computer and lowering the graphics, I just gave up. Due to this I found the game confusing and I came to the conclusion that i had wasted my money.
This game is bad, guys. Terrible controls, no direction what so ever. It isn't even good at making you feel whatever it is it's trying to make you feel. Couldn't make it past the second day.
This is a short little story, and says what it wants to say. Pretty cute and earnest, though a little confusing. It's probably not worth the price though, would recomend getting it on sale.
This is a beautifily designed and intricate little world, perfect for short and simple exploration. The story itself is cute and intriguing, very well written. The choice of font and overall design is extremely well-done, as well as music and asset design. That being said, the objectives are a little confusing, however, not always clear where I'm supposed to be going or what to be looking for...
The massive buttons on the side are super immersion-breaking though, and takes away from the experience. PLEASE consider removing them (or at least consider an option to toggle them off in the options menu)
The color mechanic is very unique, and the writing is packed with feels! The birds are a nice touch too.
A lovely, darling game so simple in its foundations. Beautfiul aesthetics, gorgeous score, and a narrative that is relatable and hard-won and absolutely necessary. The intersectionality of color and emotion in particular make this a fantastic experience that will give you pause in the best way. Highly recommended!
Beautiful game, really catches a description of depression and its affects or how you see the world, I only wish it was longer
FIrst let me start off with I normally dont even take a second look at these kinds of games. But being from the area that the game is based on I figured I would give it a try and I am glad I did. It is a very heartfelt and compassionate narative on love and life. Take it slow, read everything, and think about those around you in your life that mean something to you and maybe you will cry just like me. Well done Racantour games, im excited to see what you do next.
Evangeline is an interesting one. The game runs well under linux. I have played through the game a few times. Take your time and explore. Maybe watch the birds.
But enjoy the game moment by moment.
Best played with a controller at this time.
