I was almost sure I would like this game, but it is very repetitive and boring. Obviously, it is a game that fell victim to developer laziness. After a while I got bored and quit.
Painful experience dealing with the UI. Clicking the screen is the control mechanic. It is also the dismiss dialog control mechanic, which when trying to double click to run somewhere when dispatch interrupts you means you miss what they said. Some of the jokes gave me a laugh, but the starting story falls flat for me.
Has a lot of elements which are normally automatic gold stars from me, but I never got hooked. I like the graphics, the nature of the homage to old cop shows, but the humor never landed for me, aspects of the gameplay were tedious (ranging from tediously easy to, out of nowhere, tediously hard), and I started to lose interest fast. Solid effort but I don't feel the urge to finish it.
Oh, the night is my world
City light painted girl
In the day nothing matters
It's the night time that flatters
In the night, no control
Through the wall something's breaking
Wearing white as you're walkin'
Down the street of my soul
The simplicity of the game's mechanics kept me coming back for longer.
I acted like a generic american cop in the game, then I eventually became a victim of drive by shooting.
Epic game! 420/10
Insanely fun game with very offensive jokes, skip out on this one if you're soft as diarrhea. Otherwise pretty funny, gives you the 60s detective skits vibe with insane soundtrack. My only problem with this is that the ticket system is so boring, i know that's lowkey the point but jesus christ. Game has really low to none replayability, unnecessarily long day count and some days are just filler. Sure, 60s skits also had fillers but they were funny, this one is not. Would i recommend? For less than 5 bucks sure, with my eyes closed.
Kinda boring
great game you can arrest people of colour
Too fast, its difficult
I think this game is underrated like you hot soo much endings and the choices you make will affect ya later its soo cool and the game has a great vibe
Overall, the game's comedy and graphics were good, but it repeated itself frequently
Very nice indie game. Gives off Papers, Please vibes in the best possible way with a strong storyline and some meaningful choices to make.
8/10 doughnuts.
The concept is good and the story has a good hook. Gameplay is walk left and right, clicking and interacting with characters in a choose-your-own-adventure style sidescroller.
However the unskippable long dialogues / opening scenes are a bane to a game that can often force you to a Game Over or rewind a day. It punishes you for retrying.
Good music, ok gfx, bad story, terrible loop.
nice
I get stuck unable to move all the time. It is unplayable
A nice short game.
you're a cop you idiot!
Very cool mechanic, and storyline. I love the vibe of the game too. But so often my character gets stuck on something and doesn't move along the street anymore and I need to restart the day. If it happens at the end of a busy day, it really deflates the wish to continue. DNF after a couple days of restarts in a row.
Really wanted to like this game and it's one of those games I wish had a Neutral option. I enjoyed the art, the music, the gameplay was interesting and I enjoyed where the plot was going. The dialogue is a bit over the top in a lot of ways, but I understand that it's trying to clumsily pay homage to a lot of 80s cop movies and shows.
My problem is that it's still somewhat buggy years after its release and I can't even progress in the game after getting halfway through it due to just getting shot dead in the street by a hitman and I have no idea why, which means restarting the day all over again repeatedly. I also ran into multiple side missions just not being able to be completed. This is a very anecdotal review and I've seen that a lot of people have completed the game, so take that as you will. It has its good points but after playing it for hours I would not recommend paying for it unless you want that nostalgia 80s vibe.
Again, I wish there was a Neutral option because this game does have a lot of good things going for it.
I like cops they're good , but I don't like cop's work stuff , which makes man busy
Do not buy the game until they fix the bug where you can not move. Completely ruins the game. You go to move or run, but you're stuck in place while your stamina bar depletes. I was on day 2, and it happened over and over, even after restarting the day. In a time based game where you and not move.....yeah....pointless.
If they have known about this issue (which they have, for years) and continue to ignore the complaints and take peoples money for an unplayable game, they don't deserve your money. Even on sale for $3.66, it isn't worth it.
That being said, if it wasn't for that, i'd recommend it in a heartbeat. But in its current state, they can F@@@ off.
This can be a good game if there are less crit bugs... But unfortunately - no.
I've received all endings *except* the main one, just because of the bug when the key NPC (the gangster that reports about Enji) just not come to me (of course I don't even know that this event should take place!).
I find it out from a playthrough and lost the main story line completely! I really don't want to replay this game once more.
Thanks devs for such "a great" experience =\
Great
Framed for a murder, we must find a way to clear our name in a corrupted and crime-ridden city.
Story
We are a detective that's been framed for a crime, back to being a cop, we face prejudice, crap assignments and the temptations of an unforgiving city.
Gameplay
Gameplay is simple and straightforward, get the assignments, get random missions in-between, be done with your daily routine, rinse and repeat, meanwhile your main case starts to develop by getting help as well as new clues.
When it comes to the daily routine assignments, we have free will to act as we want, however by being a beat cop we can easily screw up if we don't act accordingly, or if we abuse our authority, a wrong ticket or misplaced accusations and we might get chewed up, it's up to you if you want to be decent police officer or getting bribes among other temptations.
Graphics
Its retro pixel art-style was what caught my eye, I love this kind of art direction, it's beautiful, colourful, vivid looking, it depicts the stink of the city, the crowded spaces, the rushing hours, the smog ridden skies and the worst of the worst of an american city in the 80's.
Sound and Music
When it comes to music, there isn't much to say, there a few tracks here and there, but it is mostly the background noises of the citizens and the city, the running cars, the crowds moving from one side to the other.
The Bad
Well, despite the praise, Beat Cop is tedious, simply boring and lacking tension, action and attractive gameplay, I did not have fun at all as the assignments are repetitive. There is also the lack of controller support that diminishes the gameplay.
Sometimes it is hard to keep up with the dialogue and the narrative, so many dialogue boxes at the same time are a bit disorienting or too long, too much useless information and casual conversations that add nothing to the plot, they exist only to spice things up, but in the end you just want to skip them due to how dull they feel, it seems they want to capture the 80's atmosphere of brooklyn like in the movies however you just want be over and done with your daily routine.
There is also the racism, there are a lot of stereotypes, again, just like an 80's movie about cops and robbers and unchecked crime, I don't mind these things at all, some may find it offensive, just a friendly warning if you are too sensitive and feel like cancelling the game for what it is.
Conclusion
This is the kind of game I wish I could give a neutral reviewing, alas that's not possible, there are good aspects and retro concept is cool, but the gameplay and mechanics are tediously forgettable.
