The inspiration for the game was to attempt something new with the castle building genre, to create a game focuses upon how castles were constructed during the medieval era.
Early Access
The following features are currently implemented in the Early Access version:
Castle Editing (Master Mason Mode)
- Place down castle pieces such as keeps, free-standing towers, drum towers and gatehouses
- Connect towers to castle pieces
- Connect forebuildings to castle pieces
- Add/remove floors
- Manipulate castle pieces (change size, rotate, scale edges).
- Connect towers to castle pieces
- Walls
- Connect walls to castle pieces
- Connect ends of walls together
- Bend walls to create curved sections
- Connect walls to castle pieces
- Customise castle pieces
- Change crenelllation styles
- Change roof types
- Change gatehouse entrance types
- Change crenelllation styles
- Paint mode for changing castle styles (type of stone)
- Attachments for adding windows, doors, arrow loops, shields and banners
- Buildings
- Various buildings are available such as the Master Mason Lodge, carpenter hut, blacksmith, market houses and scenery objects such as statues and market stalls.
All castle geometry pieces, walls and buildings can be placed on uneven ground ensuring castles can be built upon slopes and mounds (castle mottes).
Work In Progress
More features will be added later, some of these features are currently work in progress and can be seen at the end of the PlayFortress trailer video including:
- Building Systems mode for customising (town/settlement) buildings
- Engineer mode for terraforming landscape
- Lord mode where the castle can be viewed as it is constructed.
More information will be posted on our Steam store page forums and website.

This game has been abandoned for a long time as of this review. Yet another developer that just took the money and ran. Save yourself 20 dollars and don't purchase this game.
It has been a year.
There have been no updates, no communication from the developer, no indication this is ever going to be developed into anything at all.
UPDATE:
It has now been TWO years.
There have still been no updates, no communication from the developer, no indication this is ever going to be developed into anything at all.
I'd say this was a work in progress with a lot of potential .
Depending on what the developers do next could swing this either way .
They were very good at getting back to me when I had an issue .
Its a bit expensive at the moment for whats there , but it already has a lot more than when I first got it .
You wont build a massive complex with it at the moment and not sure what you will be able to do with it once you can .
Not sorry I got it but your call .
Nice idea, a bit like a better version of Stronhold with reasonable graphics requirements. But I think the game needs a shit ton of development. You can't zoom in really close, many of the tools are bugged such as placing decoration on buildigns parallelly will always end up in a total mess. And the algorithm that recognizes how far you are going from the ground is REALLY bugged. Buildings somehow float above the grass or create weird sort of platforms around them, and you can not place a door in a keep on ground-level due to this thing. It makes a bit of fun, but I did ask for a refund because 20€ is way too much for this.
Game must be played in 1080, if played in 4k it will not fill the screen
rotation doesnt line up properly
little content
$20 dollars is too much to start asking right now, either wait to open to EA or lower price
This is an overall great game with many possibilities in the present and the future. Although, I would suggest holding off on buying the game so soon as it still needs to be updated so more features are added. But, for being one of the only games that allows historically accurate castle building, it is by far the best.
PlayFortress is a game with a lot of potential, right now the towers and walls look kinda bland, a lot of the features havn't been implemented yet, but the well polished building gives me hope, i was looking for this kind of game and this gave me what i wanted for the most part, and for being early access it is very well made. I'm holding high hopes for the future of this game, if they continue to develop it at least.
Pros:
the building mechanics are well polished, if a little clunky at times.
It feels complicated enough that you can build whatever kind of fortress or castle that you want, but not so complicated as to frustrate you at all.
Cons:
Many of the features havn't been implemented yet.
There's really nothing else to do than just design a fortress, be that an astethically pleasing castle, or a practical, ugly monster, that could never be taken by any army in real life. You'll need some imagination for that last part, because combat isn't a thing yet.
Or you could try to make it both.
This review was a mess, but i felt like this was an underrated game with a whole lot of unused potential, and im hoping it'll get updated at some point in the future.
The kind of freedom this game offers is unparalleled in the history of sandboxes. I hope they continue to add more content and add different architectural styles as well as the ability to place enemy and friendly soldiers for battle simulations..that would bring this game into the god tier and put everyone else to shame. Keep up the good work guys! I hope you continue to update the game in the future.
This is an early access game with great potential. Any fans of the original Stronghold or Stronghold Crusader games should certainly put this on their wishlist and keep an eye on the developments. The interface is very nice and everything is simple and logical in how it has been designed. The ability to change the size, shape and style of wall / tower is a much needed improvement compared to the Stronghold games, as is the much greater variety of tower shapes to choose from. I look forward to the future development of the game and hope that the team actually keep to their 12 month schedule and fully complete the game.
worthless
A futur nice game where you need to build castles. At the moment, it's just a "sand castle" game. But, I hope there will be soon a story mode or a survival mod where you need some supplies and where you can build your own "mini army". The castle building mod (a little bit saddly, the only feature avaiable now) is very well done except that the towers look often very "flat". I hope that there will be soon an update with the engineer mod and a flat map. Thanks to the devellopers for that future great game.
