As other reviewers have said, this looks nice, has at least an okay story aaaand the gameplay is pretty terrible. I mean, it's not like an unfortunate number of other titles that manage to be nearly unplayable, but it certainly isn't a joy to play, and you likely won't find yourself coming back to it. That said... eh, it'd cheep, and better than some things at this price point for sure.
First of all yes, do recommend this game given the cheap price (£1.99 at time of posting), but it is not without significant problems directly affecting game play. The positives are an immersive VR experience, excellent voice acting (spaceship female British voice), a convincing alien landscape, not bad graphics, and a distinct structure to the experience. The problems experienced are related to game play, which I understand were even worse at one point.
There still does not seem to be any game save in the checkpoint sense, albeit there are checkpoint entries to the game in the starting menu - but these are all available from the onset, and possibly tagged on as an afterthought in relation to previous saved problems. Not ideal and not really a save, but at least allows some form of entry position near your last point.
There is over two hours of game play, and unlikely to be done in one sitting; or should I say standing as its a standing VR experience. The puzzles are fairly straightforward which is just as well as there appears little in the way of walk through online (An over 2 hr video is on You-tube without narration if desperation requires), but can be unbelievably frustrating due to some poor control responses - and it is possible to get yourself (or the energy orb) in an impossible to get out of position.
A few tips without giving too much away. The beginning where the spaceship voice prompts to the aqueduct can take ages to figure out, albeit gives you a chance to explore the expansive alien landscape, and force fields blocking just about every viable pathway. Just focus attention on the first tower to get you to the aqueduct. As for controlling the energy orb over the huge sloped wall, I found following as close as you can whilst propelling the orb using carefully aimed energy blasts was the strategy that appeared to work best.
With some of the above tips for some of the big frustrations, I feel this is worth the price. It is basically a good game, albeit with some inherent game play flaws. Worked fine in Windows Mixed Reality Samsung Odyssey Plus.
2/10
A bit of a lame empty "open world" with not much to do. Lame combat too.
It was not worth its original asking price of $20, but at $3 or $1.5 it's definitely worth it!
Pros:
Graphics - there's a huge area to explore and it all feels very "alien"
Voice Acting - the acting is good and the writing is clever
Price vs playtime - the whole game took me about 1.5-2 hrs to complete
Chapter select feature
Puzzles
Cons:
None
Game was mediocre, but figured I could force my way through for two hours. Spent far too long trying to bounce a giant energy ball into a quad of pillars (two times, actually). Finally got past that part, then ball went onto a ledge that I fell past, so could no longer reach it. Watched in horror as it rolled off the other side of the ledge, never to be seen again. Wasn't about to start this extrememly frustrating sequence over again, and since no body bothered to implement a save feature (this particular chapter was far too long and frustrating), I quit. So, in summation, a mediocre game that quickly turns in to frustrating pice of crap, basically due to extemely poor design decisions.
Starts out fairly intriguing with a big open map, but quickly turns into the most god-awful buggy, finnicky, messy gameplay possible as you are tasked with pushing a giant ball around by shooting it. I have not been able to finish it because of bugs (most often the ball falling through surfaces and out of the accessible world). Skip it.
If you want to experience the sense of incredible heights and vertigo follow the direction to the dracula type of castle with all the amazing lightning boltz,.
I can honestly say this is one of the best games I've played on the Vive. It's beautiful, funny, with a great soundtrack and an unrivalled sense of exploration. So many games offer escapism, but the worlds they contain are so predictable. This has a sense of genuine awe, wonder and alienation. This game offers slick locomotion, simple but rewarding puzzles and an amazing sense of scale.
The only thing I'd criticise is the lack of a save option; the bookmark system is a bit obtuse. But really, that's it in terms of negatives.
For this price, it's utterly essential. Can't wait to see what else these devs come up with.
I'm a big fan of Astral Domine. As one who does not get motion sickness I was disappointed when the Vive was first released to encounter so many experiences with teleporting. Didn't come this far to go back to the original Myst style of movment. Astral Domine was one of the first games to give me what I wanted, full freedom of movement. The graphics are really good, the puzzles, simple but interesting and the world created is rich with atmosphere. I just wish it were longer.
This is actually a wonderfully immersive and original game. I agree that there are some problems with gameplay, but as a fellow developer on Steam, I know how hard gameplay is to nail down correctly. There was obviously a tremendous amount of love and vision put into the product. It really delivers the dream world aspect and I love the 'larger than life' statues and structures.
This is like a David Lynch film -which is a TON for me to say seeing as he's my favorite director - because not everyone will love it, not everyone will get it and not everyone will get through it, but you can't say it's not compelling and original.
Pretty disappointed in this really.
The video makes it look worth the outlay, however even though the graphics are pretty good the gameplay is awful.
Awful because the movement controls are really poor, traversing the terrain is a laborious ride into motion sickness itself.
Up and down, up and down when will it stop.
Needs more hints as to where you should be headed, i.e. particle effect or a light here and there etc.
Thumbs up for the graphics as already mentioned, sound is good too.
Fix the controller issue and it will be pretty cool.
If you are looking for something other-worldly and mysterious, this might be a great option. Some of the puzzles are a little tedious, but this is a pretty decent adventure game. I really enjoyed the asthetic of the game. I really felt like I was stranded on some ancient alien world. This is mostly a puzzle/exploring game, so if you are looking for anything deeper than that gameplay-wise, you might look elsewhere, but for under $10, this is a steal. Give it a try, if you don't like it, return it.
I can't understand all the poor reviews, this has been a great experience for me and continues to be so. Sure there's some rough edges but the game is still being developed as witnessed by the recent addition of game chapter select option and new movement system. Set in a great environment I find it very immersive and original and have really enjoyed the game play and dialog so far.
The new motion system works well for me but then I tend to have little issue with motion sickness in VR games and I haven't experienced the previous system.
All in all I'd highly recommend this game for someone looking for a sci fi type experience on the Vive and congratulate the devs on a job well done.
The good: great visuals, nice open world.
The bad: gameplay can get boring in a short time, not always very engaging, not terribly challenging, not enough drive to it.
Decent alien planet feel. Half the game is getting from point A to point B. This is the part you're wandering around looking at stuff, which in my opinion is the better half of the game. The next part is guiding a ball around, which can get tiresome. Took around 1.7 hours to beat. Controls didn't make me sick at all. Not a bad game, just not much to it. With all the games out now it's hard to recommend at this price.
This game will make you sick faster than sticking your finger down your throat.
I spent endless minutes walking around (mostly with my eyes closed) trying to figure out what I was supposed to do.
Sorry guys, I require at least a modicum of fun within the first 15 minutes or I'm out.
I do like the music, old school sci fi feel and looks it to. Like dune or something. Game fire explosions are awesome. Graphics are fairly good. But the game has no save feature, nothing realy happens, you walk around for hours and might find a lame !@# puzzle and thats it. Shooting is just a weird beach ball like fireball sphere. 20 dollars is quite a high step.
Don't buy this until they add a save game feature.
I really like this game, the sense of immersion and scale is just epic. It is a puzzle game with an interesting story and now the controls are fixed it is mostly fun to play and does not cause me any nausea.
High points:
Huge play area, lots of “wow” moments.
Fun puzzles
Great humour
The light gun is fun to use
Great music
There a a few issues to a aware of:
1. Movement control was still a bit odd I would it have liked to have moved in the direction I was pointing the controller rather than the direction I was facing. Otherwise you can't run and shoot to the side.
2. There is no save feature I could find, so you have to play though in one session which can take a couple of hours
3. Replay is pretty limited as the play is a bit linear
4. Am I supposed to kill all the poor arachnids? seems a bit cruel:)
5. A bit too easy for my liking
6. Music could be a bit load and obscure the dialog
7. Half the time you are shooting a sphere and getting any fine control can be frustrating.
Nice graphic and very interesting concept. Very restrictive free movements and lacks true room scale. Defintely meant to be played sitting down because just few minutes of it makes you queasy.
