Описание

  • 100% designed for room scale VR.
  • Cast spells by drawing in the air with motion controllers.
  • Smooth locomotion, teleport and front facing gameplay are all options.
  • Full story driven VR title with different environments and puzzle solving.
  • Photogrammetry for full deep and immersive worlds.
  • New seamless locomotion system: 4th wall (in addition to teleport and smooth locomotion).
  • Nodding system: answer to yes or no questions just by moving your head.

You are Leth, a wizard who awakens after a long slumber trying to escape from the Oblivion, a magical sleep prison of the mind. Your spells are forgotten.

During the game you will recollect his memories bit by bit, recalling your past and figuring out the mystery behind a magical world populated by bizarre and unsettling entities.

How did you become trapped in Oblivion? Who put you there? And why?

Astray from the path of righteousness and trapped inside yourself by the tyrannical order of the Panopticon, you will have to face a blank beginning. With the use of your powerful spells and wits you will fight enemies, solve puzzles and pursue the recollection of all your lost memories.

Legends tell of the ancient golden age of peace and prosperity at the beginning of time, when the Makers created mankind giving them the gift of Magic to shape reality and grow strong.

The Makers guided men, teaching them wisdom and love for all beings in the cosmos, but they left to other dimensions for unfathomable reasons.
Mankind was left on its own. Men and women built a strong and wise civilization, bending the forces of magic to shape reality and create inconceivable wonders. Then the priceless gift of the Makers turned into a curse, as the strongest men, who grew power-hungry, became tyrants.

The Panopticon had been established: an order of powerful wizards that started regulating magic, allowing only a little glimpse of it to be used by their underlings. The punishment for those who defied the law was Oblivion: an eternal sleep prison of the mind that forced the body of the traitors into life while their mind was imprisoned in a never ending limbo.

This was the second age: an age of dictatorship, fear and hatred; mankind was strong and safe, but was no longer free.

Oppression lasted for centuries and it seemed it would never end, but all of a sudden something mysterious and terrible happened. The great Cataclysm, the causes of which are still unknown, left behind a scorched world, freeing forces of entropy on the lands of men that brought mankind on the verge of extinction.

Runes uses a new locomotion system which combines 1st person and 3rd person gameplay mechanics.
The name of this system is "4th Wall" since the player crosses the wall from spectator to actor in a seamless yet engaging manner.

The system works as follows: all interactions (such as fighting, dealing with puzzles, etc) happen in 1st person, however when traversing long distances the view can be switched to a 3rd person fixed camera. In this mode the player will see his avatar, and control it as in a regular 3rd person game, while still being able to move in room-scale and observe the environment. This allows for many interesting new concepts, from puzzle mechanics to narrative choices.

4th wall is however not the only locomotion solution adopted within the game. As of now we have several main locomotion systems working inside the game: 4th Wall, trackpad locomotion and teleport.

Runes is not a bad game, but it's way too unpolished and buggy to recommend. Final fight is what really ruined the enjoyment for me, before it everything was good enough.

Pros:
+ Decent puzzles with barely any hand-holding
+ Intriguing story. I still want to know, who the characters really are and what will happen to them
+ Gesture-based magic systems are always fun. And here you even get to actually aim your spells manually by throwing them, rather than sticking to auto-aim like in The Wizards

Cons:
- Twitchy item interactions spoil a lot of fun during puzzle sections
- Visuals are quite ugly, screenshots make them look way better than they really are
- Final fight is just awful. Who thought that it's a good idea to have very long and boring wave shooter section as the climax of narrative-driven adventure? Combat is very slow and trivial, but the worst part is that enemies can get stuck in the environment, preventing the player from finishing the fight. I've encountered this bug two times, decided that I've had enough of it and stopped playing

The character graphics are disturbing. They're not bad on a technical level, they're bad from an artistic standpoint. I mean, downright mind-boggling ugly models. Voice acting is creepy in an over-the-top melodramatic overacting sort of way.

But, so far, so good from a content & play perspective. Spells and puzzles are fun. I think with new art and voicing, this game could be -very- good.

This game has been so dang fun. Figuring out all of the puzzles is thoroughly satisfying. I wish the falling occurred more smoothly and that it was easier to not accidentally trigger the spell cast mode but other than that the game rocks. Very well done!

3 Hour play through, Windows Mixed Reality

The Great

  • The story is intriguing. You're a wizard with memory problems trying to remember who you are and how you can to be where you are. You meet some interesting characters along the way.
  • The VR experience is nice. At one point you climb a ladder and it just works really, really well.
  • Little details. You can interact with objects that aren't essential to the plot, and sometimes they might surprise you.
  • I thought the later magic battles were pretty hard. Enemy types have strengths and weakness, so you need to experiment and switch up your spells.
  • No glitches, crashes, or issues running it. I did have to exit and reset my floor height at the beginning because I went in way too short.

The Okay

  • The ending was "meh" in a lot of ways, but at the same time I think it works really well considering it's only a 3-4 hour game.
  • There are two types of movment: teleporting and pathing with a sort of body puppet shadow. I'm not huge on the pathing option and there are a few game sections where you can ONLY use the pathing.
  • The puzzles are similar to escape room types. Require some basic work and thinking, but nothing too stumping.
  • Sounds and voices are good. Nothing terrible, nothing wonderful.

The Not So Good
  • I felt a lot of the spells were really similar to execute (they're all circular based), which required me to check the spell book often. Which is awkward in battle.
  • [*]There's not a way to pause cutscenes or fight scenes. Or if there is I couldn't find it?

The Unknown

I need to do another playthrough, because I'm curious if there are other paths you can take (there certainly seem to be). I'll let you know.

The amazing, action packed, magical adventure of spell slinging awesomeness I was expecting? Not so much... Runes; The Forgotten Path is more of a story that you are experiencing with some puzzle elements thrown in.

https://youtu.be/ZfOxe3LI-z8

My main take away from Runes is that it needs quite a bit of polish. There's a decent VR experience in here but it's buried under a plethora of tiny issues that quickly add up to hurt your experience.

Some of the controls were rather awkward especially the grip button not only bringing up the menu but also being the selector while in the menu. It just felt awkward. The locomotion settings were also reset between level loads causing quite a bit of frustration.

Starting the game up does not take you into any sort of main menu. You're dumped right into an excessively long story intro. For most this will likely be fine but for anyone else that launches their games while still seated with their headset on the ground, this is just annoying. You don't need much for a start/main menu. It's pretty standard IMO and to me, lacking one is a sign of lazyness and a lack of polish.

The physics seemed odd at times. Like a small piece of paper having sideways gravity... This is just immersion breaking and frustrating.

Along the same lines I had tracking issues in very specific parts of the virtual room regardless of where I was in my real room. This makes me feel like the tracking issues might be software rather than hardware but it could very well have been something with the wireless or any number of things. Tracking aside there were issues where the fault was obviously the game trying to decide where to stick me. For example the rafters in your safe room. The game got very confused when I tried to climb up there.

The bright flashes of light at the start of the game were blinding and painful. The blurring of the screen when 'reading' memories caused quite a bit of eyestrain. Both of these caused quite a bit of discomfort.

The special locomotion style that Runes uses doesn't feel as unique as they claim. I really wasn't overly impressed with it but I'm definitely partial to trackpad locomotion. It could very well help enable someone who can't handle trackpad locomotion but I feel it's not quite as amazing as it was described.

The NPC animations leave a lot to be desired. Whether it's close up shots where you notice that their eyes are dead, lifeless and unmoving, their mouth moves like a wooden ventriloquists dummy or their limbs don't animate naturally.

There appears to be an interesting story here however this is likely a pass due to the lack of polish unless you're really into having primarily a narrative experience. $24.99 might be a bit much. Pick it up on sale.

Pros:
Strong story line, interesting puzzles, excellent graphics and artwork.
Locomotion options, movement and physics all very good. I liked the spell casting and controlling the magic.
I really enjoyed this game, reminiscent of Red Matter and Torn.
I'd like to see a new quest for this game, I'd buy some DLC.
Cons:
None, the game performed flawlessly on my Vive.

Runes is the best wizard fantasy in VR. When adventure games go on to become a vibrant, popular genre in virtual reality, it’s going to be because of the innovative ideas and experimentations found in games like this.

Runes is an adventure game where we play as Leth, a wizard who has lost his memory. We’re trapped inside Oblivion, a dark and vivid place peopled by mysterious characters who each hold important clues to how we have forgotten so much, and why we must proceed to remember. Each character has a ton of personality thanks to fantastic voice acting, with the Mentor and the Jester each being personal favorites. Only in VR can you have a game that feels like a mix of puzzle adventure fantasy, movie, and novel -- something like Memento crossed with the Wizard of Earthsea!

Make no mistake, this is a game where you fiddle and you think. It’s very much a cerebral experience where the patient player will think about what’s in front of them, what they can do, and find clever solutions to problems in order to experience more portions of the well-told story. You spend a lot of time in a small number of colorful and captivating locations (the central chamber is insanely clever and particularly devious, revealing more and more of itself as the game progresses). You’ll puzzle your way towards acquiring powerful, motion controlled spells (fire arrows! Telekinesis! The totally f***ing awesome DARK GRASP!) that unlock both new abilities and your memories, leading you to an epic, action packed, completely insane climax that made my jaw ache from smiling so much. Movement is handled by a combination of either smooth locomotion, teleportation, and/or a very fun and innovative 3rd person teleport mechanic where you can click to send an astral projection of your body out into the world.

Great costume designs, expressive animations and a subtle score that soars to epic heights round out a really well polished experience. My hat is off to the band of wizards who made this game, thank you for keeping me spellbound over 3 incredibly rewarding and immersive sessions. Sequel!!!

Wow! I just finished the game, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it! For me, this game represents the perfect implementation of VR - there is a great story, plus intelligent 3D puzzles to solve, items to manipulate (the controls feel very natural) and there is a combat element that really puts your learmed spell skills to the test. I also thought the story telling was top-notch, very natural, and I loved the voice acting/narration. I've had my Oculus Rift since Christmas of last year, and this is my favorite game to date!

On my system, the game ran flawlessly and I only had to "reboot" once because my ability to "grab" items was off - it could have been the Oculus itself, though, as I generally find all the USB devices a bit finicky sometimes. There are a few rough edges, and the game is a bit short (though I am thoroughly satisfied with my purchase).

I really hope this game develops into something more as it was really fun. I would love to see it taken to the next level!!!

Thanks to the Developers! You guys/gals created a really fun, engaging experience! :)

Edited 12/2/18: I just noticed that the review says I recorded only 1.1 hours on the game, but this is NOT correct. I usually load the game using the Oculus Tray Tool, and don't start Steam VR separately - not sure if that makes a difference or not. Anyway, I estimate that the game took me at least four (4) hours or so to complete, and that included probably about 30 minutes trying to figure out one of the puzzles.

Good setting, interesting story and funny mechanics. Very good and solid game!
The puzzles are not too hard and not too easy, they give satisfaction when you complete them.
All aspects of this game have been taken care of.

Finally a good and interesting VR game! :D

This game starts with so much potential. The voice acting is a little rough, but the story and graphics and gamepley are good. But just when you're ready to get really get going, the game ends abruptly. I finished it in 83 minutes. WAY too short and not worth the money. What a shame...

Well looking at the pics of the game on the store page I never saw that forest area. I like to explore and play a game completely so I don't know how that happened. The game should have guided me there or not let me skip it since I'm guessing it's part of the story progression. Must be a glitch. I had some other glitches too. I really did like the game a lot it's just too buggy and short. I understand you are a small team and I can overlook bugs in the beginning, but it could have been made longer by adding some more action sequences or fetch quests, etc. There doesn't have to be constant story.

Lovely graphics and nice story.

Huge minus on the footsteps in the forrest part, without them the game would probably been a few more minutes longer...

20€ for 2h gametime? I can not say it is worth it, not for that short time.

The "home" area is crowded by the objects and chrashes into them self making them fly around. Trying to organize it only makes it worse. Game it self crashed a few times or had to be restarted when objects disappeared. So expect some issues.

Feels more like a playable demo.

Would I buy it for 20€ again with this knowledge? Yea would, still one of the better games I played.

I thought it was going to be more of a wizard game. Ended up being more of a puzzle game. It was fun, and kept me wanting to play more. the last puzzle got me, and I had to go to a forum to find the answer. I would like more from this game, because it was fun. A bit more of the action wizard part. But over all this game was fun and had me coming back for more.

DISCLAIMER : If anyone is doubting the validity of my review due to me only having 6 minutes in game, I played the game offline and the time did not sync up when I went online to post this review. I launched the game after beating it and let it run to get the time just so I could post this. Now, the review.

Coming from HTC Vive POV
Runes was a very enjoyable game, with fun puzzles and innovative ideas. The motion-based spell casting was very unique and made the game very fun and interactive. Overall, for the puzzle aspect of the game, I believe it was very good. The story was decent / good, nothing spectacular, but I did enjoy it. The movement can feel a bit weird at times, but overall does a decent job. The introduction of the 4th wall mechanic is interesting, but I found myself opting to use the normal walking and teleporting. I won't mark down anything for this because you can easily toggle it off. The game itself does have a few bugs, but considering it was made by a small team, it's very good for what it is. Voice acting is great on some characters, and meh on others. The game gives off a very good feel when playing it, and makes you just want to continue playing. One problem though, the game is relatively short. It leaves on a good cliffhanger for potential expansions though.

Overall, this game is pretty fun to play, due to it's movement based spellcasting system and good storyline, along with interesting puzzles. While there are a few bugs, it's nothing that made the game unplayable. Some other reviewers have been talking about problems with the controllers, but that's from the oculus POV and I think they said something about fixing it (dont take my word for it). From the vive, there were no problems with the actual movements. I found myself engrossed in the game and played through the whole game in one sitting. If you like fantasy games / magic, along with puzzles, or if you just want an interesting story, this game is good for you.

Was it worth?
The 20$ I paid for this was definitely a fair price. Pretty good deal overall, as it was a quite enjoyable game.

For a VR game, I give this 8/10, however, it has plenty of room for expansion. So if you have some spare money laying around and a headset, pick this game up. Devs are really nice too.

This Game took me 3 Hours to complete why does the Playtime show up as 5? Simple because their Patch erased my previous Save Data 3 HOURS! of a none existing Plot its barely even that because there are no stakes and basicly no devlopment for it too put it midly ``The plot is a farce `` absolutely nothing.
The characters are a joke, too.
The old master warns you of your power, but does nothing to stop anything.
The devil dude does nothing more than to tempt you once.
The chick says that there are parts of you missing and the masked dude is just telling you what a terrible person you are and no: This was no short summary of these charcters most important Traits this was their entire character.
The gameplay consists of throwing some lazely animated magic balls at badely made monsters .
Their is some searching but its barely worth as it just consists of looking around.
This game has one toturial and two main levels and two of them are badely made and boring with the exception of the forrest which has a nice creepy idea but even then its easy to trick.
The game just spame ice balls at the black thing and look at both it and the white footprints thats all their is tro it.
Now to something different the sound design my god is its bad many objects have straight up no sound and those with one sound laughabely bad by the way did i mention that this game is 3 hours long the only effects that are passable are the Magic Balls everything else sounds terrible that said the voices are decent the soundtrack is passable just barely i might add.
The controlls are weak escpialy now with Games like Jets Island or Lone Echo.
That was it this was a forgetable boring lifless ride.
With neither polish nor love i have no idea how it took them 4 years to make it seriously I have no Idea btw 3 hours If i even have to say it:,,Don't buy this game, we need to show vr deveolepers that we want more for our money, not something like this!``

Well worth a play.

I just finished this and honestly would not have bought it if I'd known it would be completed in 4 hrs. I'm glad I didn't know because it is honestly one of the best experiences I've had in VR to date. There's a genuinely engaging story and puzzles that have just enough breadcrumbs to make them solvable without being handed over freely to the player.

I hope you guys make a million pounds and bring out a sequel cause you've left me genuinely wondering what's next.

Fun story-based puzzle/action. It's a good example of what can be done with VR technology for gameplay, and has a good story driving the experience.

I would love to see more content or longer games built around these ideas - I look forward to seeing what StormBorn produces next.

Hey all, I've played for a bit. The story definately pulled me in a little bit, the beginning is pretty cool. Graphix are really nice, no jumpiness, very smooth. Casting the spells is really cool too, I've done ice shield and flame of course fighting off the folks early on in the intro. I would say heck yea, worth the charge of a few movie theater visits. I'm happy with this for sure, 20 dollars seems like a nice deal and worth it. I will be keeping this game! Lately, I return most of the VR games I try, but this will be a keeper for me at least !

I don't do reviews ever, this might even be my first. I just know how early reviews are critical to the success of a game and I can tell some hard work and pride went into this for sure for an indie title like this...

Congrats on the release !

Game now available with Oculus SDK option in Steam VR, should fix a couple cons for oculus users.

I was worried as always when buying a new VR game, ready to refund asap if things seems rushed/incomplete however that was not the case here.
Great game for the price if you like a decent story, I want more games like this but longer.
The Story got me interested from the start.
These guys really did a great job and I hope the best that this sells well to seed some possible story DLC and continure where this leaves off.
Game needs some polishing but that's expected.

Support these guys if you want more content like this, they have more they want to do...but gotta get that money.

Pros: (keeping in mind this is a low budget studio most likely)
Good Story
Great voice acting
Great animations
Great enviroments

Cons:
Length as always, short but good...but I wanted more and I felt like what I got was decent gameplay.
Puzzles are a bit boring/tedious and one puzzle was just guess work...unless a clue went over my head
Some issues with linear progression of tasks...I was able to do task C before A and B (not game breaking, just confusing)
Oculus controllers and hand models don't line up...they are rotated 90 degrees and tilted. So with palm facing out, spells go up and to the right at around 2 o'clock. (possibly solved by buying from Oculus store?)

Throwing the mask at the mirror was just guess work for me, perhaps I missed something
