Об компании "Weird and Wry"

There are numerious game breaking bugs. Such as resources are not collected from planets, characters stay in low "Mind" even though issue with payment was solved. Also music is so annoying and buggy.

The Spatials: Galactology – More Like Galacti-nahhh 🤦‍♂️

The Spatials: Galactology promises a fun space adventure where you build and protect your colony. In reality, it’s a frustrating mix of outdated mechanics and tedious micromanagement. You’ll spend more time fixing power outages and malfunctioning systems than enjoying the supposed galactic exploration. 🚀💥

The graphics feel too simplistic for the game’s ambitious premise, and the lack of meaningful progression makes the whole experience repetitive. Exploding homeworlds sounds cool, but it quickly becomes shallow and uninspired. 💔👾

If you’re after a complex and engaging space colony sim, The Spatials: Galactology misses the mark. There are better ways to explore the stars. 🌌🚀

Man, I want to love this game - but I hit a wall every time I play it. Not because the game is bad, but because of performance issues. It appears to do most work on a single CPU core and, as soon as you have a "medium" station, you start getting stuttering that makes the game unplayable. I came back to give it a go with my Ryzen 3600.. it didn't fair much better than my previous Intel 3770k. Performance issues were also seen on Steam Deck.

I love this sort of game, and I am just sad that with 70+ hours played, I have never been able to build a full station.

Had a lot of fun playing this colony sim several years ago. Very much enjoyed the amount of content and the different mechanics at play, though in some cases half the fun was figuring out how it all worked.

If you're into colony sims and don't mind a bit of combat and are capable of braving the unknowns of space, it's certainly a game worth playing (especially at a price point below $15!).

The game isn't too bad, but it feels like you have to learn a lot through trial and error. There isn't much in the way of information either inside the game or on the web. I played for 10 hours and I've still barely escaped the initial systems, and mistakes slow things down even further.

As an example- every time you recruit someone the next recruit costs more. So if you have a bad mission, or invasion, and lose a bunch of a staff you are now in a position where replacing each experienced staff member costs increasingly more, and you're replacing fully geared experienced staff with inferior unequipped, untrained versions. This forces even more conservative play as you slowly crawl back up.

Game is fun to play even though it feels like early access. I would recommend however to buy the original.
The balance and bugs make the game a bit of a struggle but it remains fun for the most part. What is not fun is the game breaking bugs like resources no longer collecting properly.

An interesting idea mixing "Star Trek" and "The Sims", but far has too much grinding and not enough pay offs to consider this a "good" game. Last update was in 2019 so the game is abandoned by its developer. :-(

Have nothing better to do and like grindy management games? This might be for you.

Not a horrid game by any means, but the terrible UI, poor controls, and lack of keyboard shortcuts make it very hard to play. The tutorial does a bare minimum with teaching you sadly as well. Unlike other games of this genre, it has a very poor replay value. I found myself bored with it after just 3 hours because of how hard it was to navigate all of the functions.

Overall, it suffers from poor design decisions, poor micromanagement features, and frankly trying to do too many things at once.

Play the first one instead. While this game has some good additions to the original concept, the balance is horrible and it lacks any way to tweak it without mods.

Once attacks begin on your station, they don't stop, there are no pauses, it's just one after another. These attacks begin whenever you advance far enough in tech or try to get to the resources you need to setup defenses.

But the only setting that you can use is to turn them completely off, no way to just reduce the frequency. This minimalist settings is a huge problem for other parts, like many of the "helper" effects that are really just downright annoying, you can't turn those off at all.

The original was just right visually and though you had to grind a lot it is still a lot of fun.

It took me a while to get a foothold in this game, but after several restarts I managed to learn from my mistakes and build a functioning base.

Overall, the game was fun and I enjoyed expanding and travelling through the systems for trade and exploring.

However, you do reach a point in the game where there is nothing left to do. Once I unlocked all the systems and established a decent income that was it really. Even though I had a few items left to research there was no real point towards it.

All that was left for me to do was to obtain dropped loot from enemies, but my good the drop rates are so low and the request so high (400 items) that it was disheartening to even keep trying.

While I did enjoy the game, and I do recommend it for anyone who wants a base building/trade game, I would say that it may be hard to commit to it once you reach that plateau point

Almost A Great Game

I really wanted to love this game. I've dumped over 100 hours between beta, launch, and 2 years post-launch and sadly this is a game that is almost great but greatly suffers in a couple of key areas. Namely there are major balance problems to create an enjoyable experience. It's moddable. These balance problems could be modded and a great game would be the result. But there are hardly any mods to begin with created for this game and the few that do exist fall short of delivering the sort of quality experience we should expect from our games in such a rich and diverse gaming market.

The game still has pretty annoying bugs and it hasn't been updated in over a year, there are major balance issues, and the UI is rather poor. Otherwise it's a gorgeous Star Trek meets Rimworld sort of experience. You build, explore, collect resources, and expand your influence throughout several galaxies. There is a deep level, RPG, and research system.

I would love it if the community fixed this game but it is doomed to be an almost great game that was abandoned before it could be the fantastic experience it should have been.

Game was great until robots invaded me and it was total ruin, game over. I can't believe how badly they mowed me over. Get gud or die I guess. Sad because the base building and sim management was really fun, Product production and the visitor function was a really cool part of the game.

Combat UI was terrible though as most of the time you can't select your units and you end up selecting base items. The first mission, you'll see the problem if you get it. It's awful.

To sum it up, Great base builder, people manager, tycoon kinda gameplay, but you get destroyed before you pass the half way mark in research, This could have been an awesome game, so close, too bad. I loved the first part of the game, hated the last half after several replays same result.

Feels like a prototype. Isn't very fun either, has mobile game/grindy feel. It looks like a star-trek universe but really you're space capitalists. There isn't anything to explore really, the controls and mechanics are confusing and take guesswork, the tutorial is extremely annoying. The GUI is atrocious, each page is designed differently, popups are all over, navigation between pages is unintuitive, lots of things don't have hotkeys, the AI sucks so has to be micromanaged. It's like someone made their dream game and didn't playtest any of it.

Pretty bad game design overall. I really wanted to like this game but I honestly sort of can't stand it.

The developer wrote an update, went off to write another game, and delayed releasing said update for literally a full year in order to use said release to advertise the other game.

Don't get me wrong, this is a decent base-management/business tycoon game (decent, not great), but don't expect much in the way of care or support from the dev from here on out. Unless there's more than words to follow, don't assume any more support for this.

(Edited to include actual gameplay, and why this is frustrating):

-----------------------

As for Galactology itself, the premise is pretty straightforward. Build a base, send your crew across the galaxy to collect resources, through diplomacy or warfare, make goods (and ships and equipment), sell them back to the other worlds for profit or invite tourists to partake directly.

The problem is the guide is mostly decent but the tutorial is bare-bones, and a lot of things aren't well-accounted for. There's no loan system or hand-holding on profitability, and every step costs money, from production to raw materials to labor to landing docks to even setting up export points on other worlds (both construction and choosing what to sell). It's possible and entirely too easy to almost hardlock a game by spending all your starting funds and having no way to make enough back to set up even starting income generation.

Then there's little things like knowing what to click and either 'tribute' to or destroy to unlock solar systems outside your home, or odd supply requirements like, say, any engineers you promote refusing to eat anything but pizza (early-game recipe, mid-game materials), which means anyone you'd want to promote to that position will, at best, be taking constant starvation damage and needing heals at semi-regular intervals for quite some time.

Again, don't get me wrong, the actual game, once you get used to it, is decent and at least entertaining, cute and silly. But it's the kind that takes a lot of attention and searching to learn to work around the flaws, and at this point my confidence that any of this will ever even be looked at by anyone other than a modder is basically negative.

Interesting base building and management game.

Pros:
- Deep research tree
- Nice graphic style
- Good building system
- Game has a good flavor to it
- Good depth in terms of building options and production chains

Cons:
- Poor tutorial
- UI is lacking IMO and doesn't do a good job of presenting information
- Not as many production or supply chain options as I would like. For example: you can set a global level of good to maintain but I didn't see any means to set a min level per construction station
- No real modding community or available mods

Ultimately, I think it's a nice offering and hits a lot of nice marks but compared to a title like Rimworld there are too many major shortcoming like the lack of modding support and limited production controls that make it hard to suggest this over something like Rimworld. I won't give this a thumbs down as its not a bad game but I think there are better games in this genre currently.

tl;dr: A humorous and extensive management/exploration/sim/theme park game with a few serious shortcomings.

Wall of text incoming! Many things to talk about here!

General/Pro:

Comparing The Spatials to other games is rather difficult as there simply is no single other game like it. You got elements from Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Startopia, etc. mixed with planetary exploration and combat (both offensive and defensive), staff equipment, level ups and increasing needs.

You start out with a handful (alien hands have six fingers, I am sure) of staff and some resources on a totally empty planet.
You quickly need to build up the basics of your station: food production, deliverance and eating tables. Beds for your staff, research stations, cargo buildings, weapon & consumer good production, a doctor and nurse, and docks for your ships to park at and visitors to land - and those are only the early things.

And you shouldn't lose any time doing so, the game's starting funds are very tight. Don't go into the game expecting a too easy time.
Even later in the game, you can't really sit back. As soon as you develop new technologies, your staff levels up and you explore more planets, more and more things need to be taken care of.
Hiring new breathing staff becomes too expensive? Research robots and let them do some menial tasks.
Discovered a new alien race and they are hostile? Better earn some cash to appease them or invest into military to enforce your will.

There is so surprisingly much going on in the game that I won't cover it all here.
It is also worth mentioning that the pace at which new things are coming in can be determined by yourself. Once you are in a good position, nobody forces you to explore further, research more and level up your staff. But once you do, the development and management race begins anew and if you didn't wait to accumulate large amounts of wealth it will be a challenge.

Money is earned by trading with other civs (so make sure you have surplus goods and have installed some delivery stations on their planets) and by paying visitors who buy from your stores and use your bars/showers/hotels/etc.

Concerning graphics and audio, both are charming. As you can see on the screenshots, the game is quite cute and humorous, includings its graphics. It may not be for everyone, but I find it very fitting for this style of game.

And as always, a big +1 for the linux version. It runs very well, I just had a slight audio issue that the dev quickly responded to and is investigating.

Contra:

While the very early game has a good tutorial, I felt very lost after it was over.
I didn't have a real clue on how to earn money. And even once I figured it out myself, the starting money turned out to just not be enough for me. It took me four tries to even get a basic economy running.
The the tutorial really isn't covering everything you will need for survival.

Continuing on that note, the game is generally sparse with information.
What exactly are aesthetics used for? Are they really required for anything but your bedrooms? I have no idea.
How are trading prices determined? Do they drop when you sell much, change on their own or get increased with more delivery station? No clue.
What exactly is a bartender doing? Don't know. Visitors and staff can pick up drinks just fine without one.
And so on...

Another problem is the UI:
  • Finding your people is very problematic. There is no in-view list, nor a way to search by name. You just have one staff screen that you have to click on, find the person you are looking for, click on a zoom button and you'll be brought to the person. Especially in combat situations, this is very bad and should've been done better.
  • There are also varying screens for a person. One in the staff screen that has all the information, another one when you click on people in the game that has most of the information - but some things can't be done from there, another one when you assign people to objects/ships/etc. containing only little information. All of these could have been combined.
  • Why can I not set the autopilot targets of a ship from the fleet screen and have to go to the galaxy screen for that?
  • Why does the fleet screen not show what exactly the crew needs in order to proceed with their task?
  • Why can trading not be automated? The more things you produce, the more time you spend just clicking on the "trade this" button.

The final issue is the AI.
In general, it works well, but has three problems:
  • There is no prioritization of single tasks (e.g. fill up this machine), only general tasks can be prioritized per person (similar to RimWorld). This leads to objects further away from where your main production is to be stocked very slowly. If you could prioritize single objects, this would be solved.
  • Manual orders can not be given if an object is "busy". So if you have a worker close to a facility that needs tending, you can not order the worker to use it if another worker is on its way to use it - even if that other worker is still minutes away from reaching it. This is terrible. Manual orders should cancel everything else.
  • [*]Manual orders are sometimes simply not done. Very often, I ordered a worker to do something, just to have them stop in the middle and decide to wander off doing something else. Wtf?

Conclusion:

Despite the shortcomings, I'm having a good time with the game. However, I can see how the mentioned points will burn out the patience of many people and quite likely cause some bad rating. This could have been prevented and I hope we will much of this patched out, as it is seriously hampering the potential.

Nonetheless, I can recommend this game for fans of management games/sims and general scifi nerds.

Tried this game out because I saw Nookrum's Lets Play - cutesy graphics and sims style games are not normally my cup of tea, but have to say I've been very impressed with this game.

Decent level of complexity, some great events, and goals provide a good tutorial structure to build towards. Regular challenges like robot rebellions and moster attacks occur right through the game so far.... It keeps on challenging and is lots of fun.

If you're on the fence about it, I'd say it is well worth the money and a try. Cheers.

Fun for a while, but gets bogged down in shallow repetition, and has a clunky UI with no keyboard shortcuts.

The lack of keyboard controls is a glaring issue; only combat and toggling pause has keyboard shortcuts, everything else is done with the mouse, which is sluggish compared to keyboard controls and gets progressively less tolerable with playing time, since the time lost on doing even the most basic actions like adjusting the game speed with the mouse adds up. Building in particular requires a lot of clicking to switch between walls, floors and object categories, and it also brings me to the next point of repetitiveness.

Graduate officers require their own rooms, and later in the game, when robots take over the basic tasks and the rest of the crew graduates, building and assigning all the officer rooms and unassigning the old rooms with the clunky controls becomes a repetitive chore, which the game punishes delaying but offers no assistance in doing. There's little thought involved in making the same 3x3 rooms, and it became especially annoying because my economy was stalling and I couldn't afford to build too many rooms at once. The first dozen officer graduations felt like leaps towards progress, but at the end the graduation notifications had become an annoyance.

The planet exploration is an another repetitive and eventually mindless part of the game; it gets old to clear out and loot the hostiles and build extractors and other structures after the umpteenth time and after the novelty of orbital bombardment has worn off, and the last update unfortunately expanded this tedious process to trade as well. It's just the same dull mini-game over and over again for every planet; occasionally encountering new races and higher-level enemies does not offset how dull it is.

Making and tweaking a logistic, production and hospitality pipeline and dealing with strategy was interesting enough, but the game's UI just doesn't scale with the rest of the game, and it ends up feeling like trying to create complex graphics with MS Paint. The combat and exploration portions of the game outstay their welcome, and closely coupling trade to exploration in the last update killed my desire to continue playing.

I'd only recommend this game to people specifically interested in the management genre, and I'm disappointed that it was released with problems that still feel like Early Access problems.

TL;DR Review: I enjoy this game. If you like Colony Management games, this is one you shouldn't pass up.

So this game flew under my radar while it was in Early Access, probably for the better. I don't like comparing games the way most people do ("This is like RimWorld", or "This is like MineCraft") But what I will say is that Galatology bring enough to the table that I don't feel the need to play another similar Colony Sim in its place.

Pros:
-Solid Colony Management with a complex and deep, yet not too hard to grasp colonist needs simulation.
-A whole Galaxy to explore and exploit.
-Relationships with alien races based on trade.
-Pleasing and cute Art Style.
-Plenty of things to research and discover.
-A fun tourisim mechanic.
-Colonist XP and job specializations.

Plenty more Pros, I am sure of it. I am far enough in that I feel that nothing at this point can be a big deal breaker for me.

Cons:
-UI can be off putting at first. Some menus seem cluttered, and could use a TLC pass.
-You have to restart the game to see any Video Settings changes, including simple things like UI scale and color.
-It can be difficult to select the things you want to select especially if there are multiple entities on a tile or nearby.
-Tutorial is lacking beyond the most basic lessons, could explain a bit more. This may leave players newer to Colony Management games confused and in the dark.
-Entity graphics, while well done and cute, become blurry and unpleasent to look at at higher zoom levels.
-Click and Drag select is relevant to the Isometric view and takes getting used to, this will be a major annoyance for a lot of RTS/Management veterans.

I will update this review if I find anything extremely Pro/Con in the future.

At this point of Galactology is good fun for 10-30 hour "session", after which endgame content starts to run out. But don't worry about that going to the game, you'll enjoy it before that happens. It's quite free from bugs and plays really well from begining to the moment you decide to quit. Updates come regularly and add nicely to the gameplay. Developer is active and communicative about plans for the game.

So, Galactology is essentially a base builder with fun comic graphics. It's easy to get into and understand the mechanics, interface is first a little old fashioned feeling, but is actually very user friendly. Tutorial is a bit simple/annoying, but you can just ignore it if you have played these games before. Economics simulation is what you can expect, you always make profit, but you can optimise quite a fair amount. If you quickly build stuff that you just reasearched you run into shortages, also at early midgame you can easily run out of money, but pile up tons soon after. Unfortunately there isn't much use for money, so once it starts to pile you don't need to save it for anything.

Planet exploration is all about harvesting materials from new planets. It's essential part to the game. It's part of the game mechanics that at this point doesn't offer much - you pop bulding's and leave, but isn't especially boring either and there is decent amount of visual variation. Materials are carried back to the base by your autopiloted ships. There is kind of fun aspect of invasions on planets you are harvesting from, so from time to time you have to go fight and liberate the planet guns blazing.

Galactology might be the best light base builder at the moment. To be a gem it would need more humor (now it's just "funny" graphics), little bit improved economics system and some special thing to make it really "unique". It might might be able to pull it off if future updates keep coming. But as it is, it's already great.

4/5 stars. Review updated after release from EA.

Wonderful scifi construction and management sim.
Great as is, but every major update adds changes/improvements that provide a fresh experience making for great replayability.

Definitely recommended.

Great game. For those who are hesitant about buying an early acces game, I can tell you tat I've got 17 hours played and the game is totally functional, addictive and fun to play. Lots of options, I'm not even in the 40%. Still has some bugs, but overall, I recommend it 100%. Also, it's beautiful aesthetically.

To the uninitiated, do buy the game and support if you like automation, resource management and a tourist establishment management sim. To returning fans, you will find that the game has significantly more breadth (in terms of content) and depth (in terms of customisation).

However, many of the core features are yet to be implemented (such as character progression and ship building) and there are definetely a few flaws. If you're a picky person and would like a polished game instead, wait till testings are over!
