Since I couldn't play Assetto Corsa on my potato laptop, I decided to buy this game when it's on sale. And boy oh boy, this game is really good. The physics are great, the handling is great, car collection is pretty decent (I wasn't expecting this game has to be on the same level as Gran Turismo or Forza) and despite being a racing sim, this game is friendly for the beginners too. Sure this game is pretty much outdated if you compare this to the other sim like Assetto Corse, Automobilista, etc. But for the price of potato chips, this game is a must get.

No joke, I bought this game several years ago when I was in the 6th grade at some sort of book fair deal at my school. Most of the video games they had were educational or puzzle games, but they had GT Legends for some reason. I seen it and immediately knew I had to have it.

This game is fricken awesome. A nice variety of classic race cars and tracks. The AI and physics still hold up well to this day. This game can be a little tricky to get running on modern hardware, though.

10/10 -would buy video games at school again.

Too bad I discovered this game so late.

As a real trackday driver and motorsport fan, I think that GT Legends is still one of the best sims out there, pairing with many modern racing sims in many aspects.

Starting from its career mode, which is an example of variety and could serve as a good example of how to introduce a "career mode" in racing sims (even when most race simmers are not used or just don't like to play campaigns), I enjoyed every single race in this mode. You'll start driving a little Mini Cooper in small tracks with only few laps to complete, and you'll progess up to the most powerful cars at Spa or Monza. Great championship feelings and you can event try to win the official GT classic -real life- titles.

Talking about cars, it has one of best carlists that I have seen in any racing game, truly showing its title "Legends". Yes, all of them are true Legends, the Lotus Cortina, Alfa GTA, Ford GT40, Porsche 911 RSR, Shelby Cobra, Ford Mustang,... I absolutely love every car in this game, and if you like cars and motorsport history, you will do aswell. You only need to disable all possible HUD, go with the cockpit view and the result is pure great fun on every track.

On the tracklist side, apart from the classic and obligate inclusions (Spa, Nürburgring, Monza, Imola...) it has some fresh tracks like Anderstorp, Mondello, Zolder and all their short versions which is great for racing with the less powerful cars.

These two points (vanilla version car and tracklist) are only the beginning, so if you look at the community mods there is absolutely everything you can ask for, from classic M3's to the magnificient Nordschelife. It really means something that this 15 years old game still receives content from time to time from the community.

Also there are a ton of mods that you can download from racedepartment or altbierbude.de (best GTL community) that improves the sounds, visuals of cars/tracks, UI, and more.

Let's move to the setup and configuration possibilities, which is something crucial in any racing game/sim. You'll feel at home from the very first moment you go into the config menus. From the possibility to use the TrackIR (something I really loved for a title of its age), to the easy way to map every single button and axis from any controller. I have to say I ended up using my old laptop with and Xbox One Controller attached to play this game (as a mobile device/portable console) and it's absolutely amazing to run a sim this way. It feels more or less like a Forza Motorsport game (as example) without assists, from what I can experience.

About these in-track feelings, as said it rivalizes with any modern sim, from the grip of the tyres on the track, to the weight, balance, the type of car,... everything results in a pretty realistic and fun experience. It's really easy to get comfortable with the driving in a few laps and start to set a competitive pace.

Add the magnificent "classic" UI - with legendary colours on it-, great menus music, full day-night cycle, bargain price when on sale, and you'll have an awesome racing game that can keep you hooked to the screen for many hours.

As drawbacks, I have to point out that the visuals are really outdated nowadays, even when maxed out at 1440p and with high quality tracks and visual mods applied. That's pretty useful to run the game in ancient PCs, but if you want to run GT Legends in your top tier gaming rig, it really shows its age and it's not that great for viewing the replays, take screenshots, or this kind of stuff. Also, unfortunately the AI is challenging on qualyfing and race pace but they are not good on defend or attack manouvers, and sometimes is pretty bad in certain points or corners so you can easily take profit of their mistakes and it becomes easy to win even on max difficulty setting.

But if you can forget about this and focus on the track sensations, it is still totally recommendable.

This is by far my favorite sim racing title of all time.

It has amazing physics, great amount of cool cars and tracks and challenging AI. You can run a career mode here, the so called Cup Challenge" which helps you unlock the cars and the tracks, if you want to walkthrough the game. But if you just want to have fun withouth unlocking anything there are few steps you must do to unlock the whole content, just ask Google how to do it.

So far the game has hundreds of car and track mods and if we put all of this pluses together - this is the reason why GT Legends is still alive, 16 years after it's release.

If you want to play online with many people just search for Altbierbude and SimRacing org uk.

Definetely the game has a lot to offer even today and it's totally worth buying it.

A nice blast from the past. Although don't be fooled by the number of cars you can own. There's only a handful of makes and models but with multiple liveries, so they're still the same cars. There's also only something like 6 or 8 tracks in total but they all run multiple configurations. If you're familiar with the GT series well then you know what to expect. For those that don't there's a nice career mode that unlocks new cars as well as earning money from championships to buy new cars. You can race career mode (or any mode for that matter) through 6 difficulty levels ranging from "ridiculously easy" to "you better know what you're doing" (not the actual names). Although to be honest, novice, rookie, amateur are ridiculously easy and semi-pro is pretty easy too. It's the last two levels where the real challenge is.

The graphics and physics are clearly dated although the graphics still hold up somewhat. but for less than $10 this game is worth it. It's still a fun racing game, just realize that it's NOT an attempt at an actual racing sim.

TLDR: probably the best retro sim-racing you can buy for €6

Why would you buy a racing sim from 2005, when more modern games are available even at this low price point? Well, probably because GTL’s selection of classic cars from the 1960s & 1970s is hard to beat anywhere else.

Multiplayer doesn’t work anymore so despite what the store page listing says, you shouldn’t expect a multiplayer experience from this game out of the box or maybe at all.

The heart of this game is its single-player career mode, in which you start with just two cars (an orange Mini Cooper S and a white Lotus Cortina) and try to earn credits to unlock the other 93 (plus some of the track layouts, and extra paint-schemes) by finishing in top three overall after a series of 2-3 short races. This was controversial back in 2005 (I had the disc edition back then), many people being outraged that (test drives aside) they couldn’t access 98% of the cars they’d paid for. Which is a fair point, and will be a big negative for many people even today.

However if you enjoy the challenge of having to earn your unlocks, then there’s a lot of fun to be had here. And by fun, I mean mostly hardcore sim frustration: I don’t think I’ve sworn at any game as much as I have this one: the back end of the default Cortina seems to want to step out as if the boot [trunk] were full of lead, even on 75% front brake bias, whereas the Mini, whilst much more docile, just isn’t competitive against anything faster than other AI Minis. So on ‘professional’ difficulty, getting that first couple of podiums will challenge a player like me (I usually manage about 112% on the RRRE leaderboards i.e. I am relatively slow compared to top drivers, but I bet many people who enjoy offline sim racing will be equally average in terms of pace and share my initial frustration).

The obvious answer is just to turn the difficulty down until you’ve earned enough credits to unlock a couple of the more competitive cars in the initial TC-65 class, thus dialling the AI back a notch or two to the point where they are beatable by ordinary mortals, but I still think it’s a shame that I have to do that, because then you have to accept some driving aids (e.g. ABS, traction control) which I would rather have kept turned off. It’s a shame that there is no way to choose 100% realism with, say, 80% or 90% AI skill level, like you can in Race 07 (released by Simbin the following year).

The AI in itself is pretty good: they don’t usually make contact unless you ram them first, and are proactive on overtaking if you run wide at corners. There’s apparently a way to vary the individual AI drivers’ skill profiles in the ‘Talent’ file under GameData which may make them more prone to less-than-flawless driving but other than perhaps the occasional lock-up I couldn’t perceive a huge difference myself.

The graphics are good for their era although you probably shouldn’t expect too much from the trackside textures and cardboard-cutout spectators. The cars themselves look decent and the tracks are presented in a convincingly 60s look, which is so much more immersive than just driving a classic car in a modern track environment.

The physics are probably as realistic as one could get in 2005 albeit they don’t compare to the complexity of a modern sim like RaceRoom Experience (from Simbin’s successor Sector3 Studios) or Automobilista. However the driving is a touch more demanding than Race 07, although this may have more to do with the inherent difficulty of cars of this era rather than the game engine itself.

The sound is acceptable although any audiophiles should note that there is a 16 channel limit.

I am impressed that this game supports 2560*1080, which not many games of this vintage can claim.

The game works well on an Xbox 360 controller although you should turn the sensitivity down to 20% or even less and maybe employ a deadzone even if you don’t usually.

In terms of performance you shouldn’t assume that the game will run like butter on a modern machine just because of its age: I find that I get noticeable slowdown or stutters at the start of every race as the AI pack negotiates the first corner, which can have a detrimental effect on my (already mediocre) driving; and this is on an AMD 8350 CPU paired with an Nvidia 960 GPU, so I can only assume it has to do with the game being (like, to be fair, any game of its era) very much limited to a single processor thread. But the effect usually disappears once the field is spread out a bit, so it’s not a deal-breaker for me.

Other assorted irritations (like having to reach for the mouse instead of the controller to navigate the menus: the opposite problem to some Codemasters games!) are par for the course for older games but may cumulatively annoy if you normally play modern titles. For example, you can’t access the options without quitting a race, so if you’ve forgotten to perfect your set-up or even adjust the audio you’re stuck with it until the end of the race.

There’s a Shelby Cobra in Assetto Corsa and some cars of this era (like the Mini Cooper) crop up regularly in video games but those tend to be isolated examples in an otherwise modern setting whereas this gives you the feeling of being a racing driver in a 60s or 70s race car competing in an authentic contemporary environment.

If you aren’t particularly bothered about classic cars in a retro setting then Simbin’s later release Race 07 may be a better bet: the difficulty in that game is much more customizable, all cars and track layouts are unlocked by default and the multiplayer (albeit the online community for that game is understandably dwindling somewhat, a decade after release- but you can find people online to race against, especially at weekends) still works (as long as you remember to install the free Formula RaceRoom AddOn in your Steam library), so for most people that be a better investment (plus it’s like €3 instead of €6, not that that should be the clincher at this price point).

However if you can pick up the Simbin Mega Bundle (search the store) in a sale then you would have both GTL and Race 07 (including all DLC for the latter) and some earlier Simbin releases besides so if your craving for a budget sim title isn’t all that urgent, stick that on your wishlist and you may be able to get both and more at a better price.

Of course if you have an up-to-date gaming rig then you could try a more modern game like the (free to play, but DLC-heavy) RaceRoom Experience, which has a nice 60s Corvette and some authentic cars from the 70s and 80s available to purchase individually or as part of one of their packs (*buy via their website, not the Steam store page, other than for the base game).

Alternatively Race 07 + its ‘Retro’ expansion pack works out about the same price as GTL albeit with fewer classic cars so may be a better bet if you want to keep the option of multiplayer alive.

Or you could have a look at DiRT Rally which has a nice Mini Cooper, Alfa Romeo and Renault Alpine making up its 60s class: they are great fun to drive albeit that game only has perfunctory multiplayer.

Hope this review was helpful, if so please give it a thumbs up, your feedback would be appreciated.

I have been a racing fan basically all my life and the glory days of the 1960s and 70s hold a very dear place in my heart. Watching Steve McQueen's Le Mans, collecting models and even getting to see a couple of these racing heroes in-person would make any gearhead like myself go insane with joy. And this game does a great job of placing you in the driver's seat of these fabulous cars.

The sense of speed is very good, the car sounds are excellent and the graphics still hold up and get the job done considering this is such an old game. The handling is great too, especially when using a wheel. Oh and did I mention the car models? They are really well done, all of them featuring detailed interiors.

One flaw the game has is that the steam overlay doesn't run and steam doesn't record your gametime unless you run steam as an administratorand remember everytime you run the game to left click the game in your library and choose "play game". It is but a minor issue, but it is annoying.

In conclusion if you are looking for a sim racer and are an avid fan of the golden age of racing like myself, look no further.

Great simulation of racing classic cars. Good career mode that puts you through GT and Touring cars from the 1960's and 70's including legends such as the Ford GT40, Mercedes 300SL, Chevrolet Corvette, Porsche 911 and Ferrari 250 SWB. Good number of tracks and there are thousands of extra mods available. Required for the Power & Glory mod for GTR2.

This is the sim racer I have been looking for, good selection of classic cars from small fiats to big american muscle. Has a decent selection of tracks, ai drivers are a decent challenge where they will try pass other drivers in smart places and not just push you off the track like a horny moose.

The biggest thing for me is that this game has great driving physics. Cars handle like you think they would. When you drive a small front wheel drive car you notice how nimble it is through the corners and has very little understeer and the bigger american muscle cars feel heavy with lots of torque. There are close to 100 different cars and you unlock them as you play through the career. You can adjust almost everything on them either with simple sliders for oversteer/understeer, stiffness and ride height to more advanced setup where you can change camber and so on.

Graphics are ok with decent textures and nice lighting effects for the time. Exterior damage modelling is very minimal but collisions do feel like they have some weight to them even though sometimes side to side collisions can feel a bit akward, but still you can push cars and make them spin. Very playable with older hardware and newer aswell. Also supports 21:9 aspect ratio monitors. Driving feels nice even with a gamepad, though oversteer can be difficult to control with such sensitive controls. I would recommend a good FFB wheel with this. I have not personally tested how it is with a wheel but support for all kinds of wheels and controllers are there and are very configurable with sensitivity, dead zones and so on. (I will try to add my thoughts later on about how it feels with a wheel since at the moment I don't have a good place to install my Fanatec CSR wheels, pedals and shifter.)

My favorite moments from the game are when you are playing the "david vs goliath" on career mode where you have to drive with a small and not too powerfull Lotus Cortina against big muscle cars like The Mustang. In the straightaways you get passed easily but if you carry lots of speed through the corners you can almost oversteer past them.

The game is very moddable, nogrip and other forums has a ton of beatifully modelled cars and tracks, period correct of course.

Intro/Graphics: If you love old cars (or just cars) and challenging racing, this is for you. This game is from 2005, so the graphics are outdated, although that doesn't bother me. I find the tracks and landscape suffer the most, but the cars themselves look great! The lighting is particularly good on the cars and everywhere else. You can race anytime of day, and night races are fun (I always end up breaking a headlight tho *oops*). Though, you cannot race in the rain unlike GTR2, however this is okay because driving these 60s/70s cars in the rain would be a struggle.

Controls/Difficulty: I got this game a long time ago before I was even old enough to fit in a driver's seat (much to the disdain of the elder British lads that I wrecked in multiplayer long ago), but I enjoyed it oh so much. If you are playing it with a keyboard, good luck racing on professional or semi-pro mode. With a keyboard, you pretty much need traction control, automatic shifting, and anti-lock brakes, therefore you can only be competitive on amateur difficulty. If you have a wheel and pedals and a shifter, then it'll be awesome, especially if you have a clutch pedal and H shifter. There's really no need to play on novice or beginner difficulty unless you really are new to racing games or are just a young kid. (Fun fact: it took me until this year to learn how to pit, however you won't really need to until the endurance races)

Physics/Realism: The driving physics are rather good. The crashes are very unrealistic however and it's very easy to flip your car and roll about five times before landing on your roof (and still being able to drive afterwards). Glitches are pretty fun, as well.

Gameplay: You go through a career mode where you race from 2 to 8 circuits per event and accumulate points and win a trophy if you finish between first and third in points at the end. You start with a Mini and a Lotus Cortina and race up to faster cars (Mustang, Elan, Corvette, Pantera, 911... etc.) by either winning them or earning enough credits to buy new (old) cars. You also unlock more tracks along the way. I haven't played multiplayer in such a long time, but back in the day I used to joyride in my Ford Falcon on the grass & dirt (on purpose) at Donington Park. The Europeans loved me.

tl;dr ~
You can drive (wreck) cars that are now worth millions!

You will need a controller or preferably a wheel for this, but it is spot on. It may look old but the feel and handling of each car feels authentic. Plus, if you go to NoGripRacing.com or another mod website you can download literally HUNDREDS of new tracks for this game. Nothing beats throwing a Pantera around the Nordschlief or a Porsche LeMans car around the Targa Floria or a Falcon around the back roads of Australia.

If you love sim racing, you will love this.

This is one for your racing collection if only for the lovely period cars and the masses of available add-ons, tracks and mods, and its thriving mod community (sadly no steam workshop).
It has pretty good physics and despite its age nice graphics (after all its a racing game, so what goes on in your peripheral vision doesn't have to tax a graphics card).
There is a nice community around this game and its cousins GTR/2

Amazing realistic race simulator. Classical era. Favourite powerful GT sports cars of 60-s. Attractive famous tracks with modifications. And that's all in a beautiful pleasing visual, sound and music appearance...

If you like modern World Sportscar Championship (FIA GT - "GTR" game series) and other SimBin sims (touring - first "The Official WTCC" and "Race 07" with a various Expansion Packs)...

And want some retro entourage - that's the goods! Inexpressible unforgettable atmosphere..
And best multiplayer race simulator for me. Surprising interesting gameplay with friends.
