Solid one, worth playing
I just finished this game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. That being said, there are gameplay mechanics and small issues that could lead to some frustration for the unprepared or unwilling.
Bad stuff first. The most annoying thing in this entire game is trying to get the little hand cursor to appear to pick up loot. You will find yourself messing with the camera to poke through barrels and chests constantly.
This game has a time limit. I strongly dislike time limits in my games, but the good news is that I had more than enough time and that was with me going back and forth to Denmark a bunch and generally goofing off. Don’t overdo it with the camping, and you can really stretch the time limit quite a bit.
As for the camera, it simply does not zoom out enough, but other than that, it’s easy enough to move it to your liking.
This is just a minor gripe but one more bit of jank. Sometimes you won’t be able to equip items and you have to leave the inventory menu and come back to resolve it. Not a gamebreaker by any means, but irritating, nonetheless.
The gameplay itself is very good, but I did have to restart as I didn’t quite understand the systems at work with SP and resource management. You want each of your hirdmen to only specialize in one or two weapons. This rule goes for most skills (1 or 2 support skills, etc.) If you attempt to make a jack of all trades, you are going to struggle on medium difficulty or above. When you start acquiring extra hirdmen, make sure you pick one to heal, one to tinker and craft, etc. You will have enough party members to pimp out camp. One more thing I wish I knew when I started, without the use of thralls, you will have a difficult time doing everything you want in your homestead, so it is good to focus on either power or prosperity as opposed to both (I used no thralls for the entire game).
Dialogue options in this game are many and meaningful. You have characters with personality, everything is well written, and the number of dialogue options can be dizzying for somebody who locks up at A or B style questions. The hirdmen’s dialogue is well written and the story is interesting. There are even a few mysteries left that I didn’t uncover…
Now for the meat and potatoes, the battle system. In short, it’s excellent. You will be killed and probably more than once, but once you learn how to use the battlefield and when to deploy traps or use skills, the game becomes a thrill ride. There is an excellent cover system at work here as well, and you can hide units behind hirdmen with shields, as well as obstacles. You are going to want to do this, as archers are DEADLY and can wipe out a party quickly.
In general, you want to utilize cover and deploy skills to limit the accuracy of ranged units. While doing this, you want your sword (or axe) and boards to block access to your archers, healers, etc. utilizing unit placement to also force archers to waste turns on tactical moves. It is all really well done, and once you get the hang of it, it is really fun.
So, yeah, Expeditions: Viking, it’s really good. I’m jumping back into Conquistadors next!

Dont Buy this.
The game is bugged to the point of being unplayable, and the non-bugged version is no good to boot.
Game ending bugs that are in the discussion boards as far back as 2017, still not fixed in the game and the developers suggested workaround doesnt work.
Combat system is trash.
The storyline is too rigid.
maybe the build system is good, the bugs wouldnt let me get that far. From what I did play, it was not optimal for the pace of the game at all.
Wasted my time on this.
EDIT: I requested a refund on this game. I have however many games, and this is a first for me. Truly an enjoyable experience that somehow still managed to disappoint even further in the end.
Imperfect but enjoyable.
The story in Expeditions: Viking appealed to me and picks up pace from the middle of the game to a successful conclusion. The dialogues are mostly well done, although hardly voiced. Most tasks are fun and fit well into the story. The brutal era is well conveyed, and you can (but don't have to) participate in it.
The 4 archetypes do not limit the gameplay options: there are many ways to distribute the skills to the playable characters and thus adapt them to your own play style. Unfortunately, skill points already assigned cannot be redistributed. In this regard, the game is quite unforgiving. The tactical battles were well balanced and, with the exception of the outpost conquests, varied, so that different tactics can be used.
The strategic part caught me a bit off guard, so I couldn't achieve the main goal of the game on the first run. It is highly recommended to keep the hints at the beginning of the game in mind. The game doesn't hold the player's hand much: it was a tough time, and wrong decisions have to be paid for dearly. No mercy is shown to the player here either... but in the end, not everyone can become a viking, right?
The game has some weaknesses, but they are not too serious: collecting resources sometimes becomes a test of patience and requires camera panning; it cannot be zoomed out very far; the troop has to be reassembled before each battle; assigning new abilities to the hotbar is tedious.
Nevertheless, a clear recommendation from me if you like tactical & turn-based games, the viking setting, and role-playing games.
half an hour into the game i was foolish enough to think i would have time to get "help" on my quest the next morning to find myself in a heated battle just to loose unbelievably bad and then... got surprised with unexpected character depth.
Im intrigued
The game isn't bad, but it is my least favorite one from this series.
A real gem of a game but a bit small in duration (especially act 3). Wish the devs give us Expeditions: Vikings 2
Too many bugs just makes it really annoying. Every so often it would freeze when interacting with NPC's or mid combat.
Other than the bugs it is OK - the skill point management is a bit tedious.
I enjoyed it. There are definitely branching options causing the need for multiple play-throughs if you want to see them all
Decent combat, good quests and role-playing flair. (An improvement over the first game)
Broken economy gameplay, it's super bad, tedious and unimpressive, the worst I ever seen in a strategy game. If they had cut it out I would have rated the game 2 points higher. The first game was much better in this regard.

I played the game for a couple of hours before shutting it down, almost certain that I had given up on it. But a while later I picked it up again, reading a short "tips and tricks" article online and suddenly it turned into a really fantastic game. In my opinion, it suffers from a steep learning curve where you need to figure out some core mechanics to find some enjoyment in the game. But after learning these mechanics (for example, equipping all characters with shields), this is a terrific trip.
A bit unpolished, but it was awesome, wish i got to play more. Unfortunately, it black screened my PC, and then crashed repeatedly upon loading new locations. Pay people to check for bugs, thanks
I wouldn’t mind the time limit if the game was more intuitive with my goals. I’m constantly googling solutions and it’s usually “oh you gotta do this thing that you’d never think to do, then it’ll work.” That’s a lot of wasted time for a game with a time limit. I can’t really wrap my head around the point of it in the first place. I’m having a good time for the most part, I like the settings, attention to detail, but I honestly get a headache trying to navigate the quests and quest triggers.
Game is extremely difficult so I recommend medium difficulty.
This game is a jewel! Surprisingly better than its predecessor, which was great in and of itself. The RPG aspects are simplified for efficiency. The skill tree is cleverly balanced. The combat mechanics are consistent with the previous title.
Wish I discovered this game sooner. Full price is more than worth it, on sale is a steal! Highly recommend to those who like medieval viking era RPG's and turn based games.
I very much enjoyed this game, but it is worth noting that it won't be for everyone. It isn't flashy, so if you need fancy graphics or get bored easily then it may not be for you. If you like RPGs that let you immerse yourself in a story and a setting, and especially if you are a fan of the era and history, then this game is definitely for you.
From a mechanics standpoint, the game is somewhat unforgiving. There are a few combat abilities that are must haves, and if you don't figure that out early on you will struggle to succeed. I enjoyed this challenge, but if you would rather just experience the game and not have to be tactical about your combat choices you can play on the easiest difficulty without struggling too much.
I played this years ago and was considering playing through it again now because I have such fond memories of it. When I played it, there were some bugs that were problematic. I would assume that they've fixed some of them by now, but I don't know for sure. Even if the bugs I ran into are still there, it is worth playing.
It definitely feels like a labor of love that the devs really wanted to make for the sake of making a good game and not because they just wanted a paycheck. I'm guessing it didn't have a huge budget, but what money they did have they spent well. I definitely recommend this game.
A great game brimming with soul. It's a bit buggy and rough on the edges but will always have a special place in my heart.
I also wanted to mention the soundtrack, it's absolutely brilliant. The only way to make it better is to have more tracks.

Not quite as immersive (to me, anyway) as Expeditions: Rome, but a fun RPG experience nonetheless.
This was a neat Expeditions expansion. It was nowhere near as developed as Rome, but had some fun viking lore. It was too short for me as I finished, I was expecting a big war with the Franks, but no it was done boom. Building Skern was largely pointless as I would have to just farm crap for a while to build it all up for no particular reason other than doing it. It played a bit like Rome with a different twist.
Man has axe. Man becomes viking. Man happy.
didnt like it, felt like a work, tending injured, camping etc too much unfun stuff to do. More than %50 of the time spent is reading dialogues and doing chores.
This game could be fun, but it would need better way to interact with it and tooltips for status effects.

If you are into ACTUAL strategy or tactics then this game is not for you.
I have played over 200 hours and still not finished this game.

I assume that most people looking at this game will have come from Expeditions: Rome, looking for more, and are wondering if the previous game is worth trying.
The short answer is that Viking, as much as I prefer the setting over that of Rome, is a worse game in every respect. The writing is weak, the quest design is weak, the encounter design is weak, the combat mechanics are unrefined and the campaign map travel is an absolute chore.
As a curiosity, to see where the ideas found in Rome came from, it's an interesting game, but as a game in its own right it's not a good use of the 30+ hours it'll take you to finish it. If nothing else, Viking will make you truly appreciate how much the developers hit their stride with Rome. Better to wait for the next one in the series.
