The story of Root Double features two different protagonists: Watase Kasasagi, a rescue squad captain who has lost his memories in the hours after the incident, and Natsuhiko Tenkawa, a student piecing together the clues in the six days before. The only key to survival lies in the player’s hands with the Senses Sympathy System (SSS). Unlike traditional visual novels, Root Double does not have clear cut “choices,” but rather, the game uses SSS to allow the player to manipulate the story based purely upon emotion. Your emotions projected upon the characters, particularly your trust in them, shape the progression of the story. Only with effective use of this system and completion of both protagonists’ stories can the player piece together the truth and hope to discover a way out of the facility.

a great vn that builds up on its mysteries gradually with many concepts and psudeo science that are thought-provoking and foreshadow too, i even enjoyed the lectures of this world

This is the best closed-circle visual novel in my opinion.
It's simultaneously the best one to start with if new to the genre, and also plays with tropes in a way that will surprise those familiar with visual novels like this.
A game that reminded me of one of my favorite series being Ever17. While many would denounce it as Ever17's clone... it's not. It's a story with a heart waiting to be understood...
I love Root Double,
it's a long read (honestly longer than it could've been lol) but it seems like the authors did their best to not allow a single plot-hole, which I really appreciate since the VN felt truly complete at the end!
It has a very smart plot centered around sci-fi elements and it's like a satisfying puzzle that slowly gets put together into one picture. The twists are insane and I'm genuinely impressed by the creativity that went into the story. The difference between the impression of the plot I had at the beginning compared to when the mystery gets revealed is immense!
Additionally, there is interaction, however not in the traditional sense where you just pick a reply/action. Instead there's a whole system where your actions are determined by the amount of trust you put into certain characters. It can be tricky at times to guess which adjustments are required for specific endings but luckily there are helpful guides if you're unsure. I was honestly a bit overwhelmed by that function at first but I ended up liking it! I enjoyed the variety of endings as well, though I'd never be able to get all of them if guides didn't exist lmao.
Now let's get into probably the only flaw: this VN is known for having pacing issues and in my opinion the worst ones are during the "Before" chapter, mainly due to lots of boring slice-of-life moments and a decent amount of actually unnecessary flashback scenes that don't provide any plot-relevant information. Also afterwards, despite the story moving forward, there are additionally many flashbacks of scenes that you've already played through (which is sometimes kinda necessary due to the plot, yet still annoying, since it's just repeating already read progress). At the end I didn't find that horrible but just somewhat irritating.
Besides that I kinda found the teenage characters often aggravating and really preferred the parts that focused on the adults, who I found way more interesting altogether.
To summarize, I really enjoyed this experience and the well thought-out story definitely justifies it's time-consumption. I loved the art & music, as well as the atmosphere (I kinda got Chaos:Child/Head vibes sometimes, despite the stories not being alike at all lol). Overall I can totally recommend this to fans of mystery and sci-fi!
Root A is very nice. It's a story about the rescue team doing their best to save the victims of a fire in a situation with a lot of mysteries. Everything goes downhill in Root B onwards though. So much filler, annoying middle schooler protags being brats and their reckless actions being portrayed as being justified, and the actual good guys who brought the crimes of the real criminals LABO's crimes to light being punished for it anyways in the true ending. It's a big boring waste of time. The story of Root B, C, and D could have been condensed into less than 10 hours instead of being a 50 hour long mess. And don't even get me started on how you make choices in this game, the unnecessarily overcomplicated SSS system for which you always require a guide.
There are better VNs out there. Don't waste your time and sanity on this frustrating and bloated VN.
Originally read this on the Vita through the Sekai Project Kickstarter. Really solid sci-fi mystery thriller visual novel story. Pretty interesting the whole through way through. Has some pacing issues, mostly through lots of long, slow flashbacks, especially in the final route.
I liked all the main characters by the end. They all ended up being a lot more interesting than first expected, I actually thought they would keep some relatively undeveloped but the way system worked made it so they did.
My favorite girl was probably Mashiro by the end since I liked her childhood friend depth but it's pretty close with all the girls besides Yuuri who I thought was relatively boring.
I liked the choice system in theory but without a walkthrough it can be frustrating to figure out how to do them properly, especially with the bazillion of choices in this VN. If they were to do this style of choices again, I think they should either heavily limit the amount of them, or mix them into regular choices.

After playing this game the subtitle actually makes sense and that's kinda genius even if it is also really silly
I never had any problems with understanding the choice system though I can't fault anyone who does - it is significantly more obtuse than a regular VNov textbox. Please do not be fooled by the description that put me off for so long - though it is true that they have to escape a facility they are trapped in the story is so much more than that and it one of my favs that I've played.
How could I keep this great VN in backlog for so many years??? That's blasphemy!
Well, main reason that the description was not very interesting for me. Because I've already played VNs about a group of locked people and I didn't like some of them (like 999). But in this case I was hooked form start to finish. Different chapters with multiple perspectives. Interesting characters. Many great plot twists. I liked it even more than ever17 and remember11. And I wasn't frustrated by pacing, flashbacks or repetitive scenes like some other people. So yeah, I recommend this vn.
This game reminds me of Yuri and Libra in Mental Omega,wtf~
